Is this phone still a good purchase? - Motorola Photon 4G

I'm coming from the Hero on CDMA, and I was wondering if you all thought this was still a good purchasE?

absolutely

Still loving the phone, plenty of power and the best is yet to come.

I think so....and yes the best is about to come

Its a great phone. Even stock, just change the launcher and its great. I've had this phone since it first came out and only now did I start flashing roms.... only cause I wanted ics.
Sent from my Motorola Photon using Tapatalk

Absolutely. And ICS is coming within a few months.
But, make sure you see one before buying - make sure the pentile screen works with your eyes.

I have had this phone since it was released, and so far, I have not had any issues with it. I like the "rugged feel" it has compared to the other phones on the market right now for Sprint.
It is the best option right now in my opinion.

No. Many better choices. Motorola is the red headed stepchild of phone manufacturers.
Also the locked bootloader, which they assured us will be unlocked, blows.
Samsung S2 all the way OR...
Galaxy Nexus is coming out in a few weeks supposedly.

On Sprint, the only two high end phones to choose from is the Epic Touch and the
Photon.
The Epic has a better screen, camera, and multimedia applications.
The Photon has better cell phone reception and gaming support since it's a Tegra 2 phone.
As for browsing and interface smoothness, the Epic is the winner; however, with Cyanogen mod 9, gpu acceleration kicks in, and I no longer have interface lag, my browser runs silky smooth on all pages, so it's a tie if you choose to switch roms.
As for the Pentile screen, I dislike the Pentile screen, and next time, I'll make sure to not go with one next time.
However, Super AMOLED has severe burn in problems, and the notification bar will definitely burn in with a couple months of use. For me burn in is a worse situation than the Pentile display.
For my next phone, I'm thinking of going with LG. It's true they have bad support, but the Nova IPS screen is the best screen technology. It has nothing to envy against Super AMOLED but without the defective burn in problems. For support, I'll turn to XDA.

I also came from a hero to a photon. For me, after having the hero, the photon is blazing fast. I've been extremely happy with it so far.

Photon is a Great Phone, but if you can wait. You should see what LTE phone Sprints going to have.

the photon is the first smartphone i have owned and since i got it i have not regretted it. well actually the first smartphone i ever owned was an evo 3d. i had it for ten days! biggest peice of junk i have ever owned. but back on topic the photon is a great phone. there are a bunch of roms for it and the devs do a great job keeping them updated.

i would not use my upgrade to buy this phone but to find one used...i used to have the evo 3d and changed to the photon b/c the speaker on the 3d was too low for me...the phone feels great in the hands and not too heavy...the earpiece is awesome...speaker is loud...screen is bright but you can see the pixels...love everything about this phone except for the fact that unlocking the bootloader kills 4g...

Awesome phone. Even stock... I just wanted to my hands on an ICS version. I mean... down the line.. a real 4G LTE phone will be nice but for now.. this is great. I absolutely love it.

I bought the Hero on the day it was released, Sold the Hero to get the Original EVO 4G on the day it was released, Sold the EVO to get the Photon on.....(you guessed it) the day it was released.
The Photon would be a monster coming from the Hero, you will be impressed. I love my Photon it it has done awesome by me. That said I have been looking at the new phones coming down the pike. As someone previously mentioned the Photon is the Red Headed stepchild. Sprint threw it in the water and turned its back on it. Never bothered to look back to see if it was swimming or drowning. Ice cream Sandwich has been announced for it which will breathe new life and excitement into it but some people are doubting we will ever see ICS. Sprint has announced the End of Life of the Photon as April 2012. I would not hesitate to pick one up, but I think I might be sorry when the Galaxy Nexus, EVO One, or Galaxy S3 comes out this summer.
Hard choice.

I wont ever own another Samsung device. Ive owned the Moment, my wife has the OG Epic and I had an Epic 4G Touch. They all had their own share of problems that never got fixed. Im waiting for the HTC One.
The Photon is a great phone. Its a mediocre hand held computing device. Mine lags bad and Ive done everything I can to speed it up. Deleting an email from Gmail takes 3-5 seconds for every button press to be recognized. Same in other apps. V6 Supercharger helped a little but not a lot.
This COULD have been a great phone. It had the hardware at release to be a contender but the locked bootloader bull**** pretty much killed it. It makes me sad to come to XDA day after day and read about advancement after advancement made for other phones and the Photon rarely ever shows up on there.
Motorola sucks.. Ill never buy another Motorola phone. Looks like from here on out its going to be HTC for me. I loved my Evo. Everything Ive owned since then has been a disappointment. The Epic 4G Touch being the biggest disappointment of them all.

I would personally wait for the HTC One X, it's heavily rumored to be coming to Sprint.
If you, however, needed a phone now, the Photon is certainly one of the best.

I decided to go with the photon because of the people on the photon xda thread. They are all very helpful and the devs work very hard to bring us the best out of the phone. I also have the e4gt and the people over on its thread are a joke. Most of them are kids (or at least act like kids). Ics has already been leaked for the touch so its like the devs got lazy. There is very little cm9 support and very little professionalism on that thread. But compared to the photon its the easiest to root/unlock/flash. That I'm guessing is what's creating so much drama and laziness on their threads. When I compare side by side the photon and the e4gt I am much happier with the photon. Feels better, treats me like I own it, and is personally feels like an all around better phone. With the epic, sure you get a slightly faster CPU but even on cm9 on the photon overclocked to 1.3 and then the epic over clocked to 1.3 the photon still scores higher on bench marking and we don't even have a fully functioning 2d accelerator for ics yet lol. The epic is all specs and no class

To Photon 4G Or Not?!?

Hello ALL,
What would you all say if you had to get a exchange for another EVO 3D or since I'm within my 30 days change it for the Photon 4G and just pay the restocking fee?
I do want to point out I am have had a Nexus S 4G and now a 3D but I have now had this phone for a week and I'm running into random rebooting more often in the last 2 days ... I love the battery live and don't mind the QHD screen. And maybe some will tell me to wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2 but that won't be out till late September in my opinion ... That's the phone I would rather have but can't so closest phones would be the 3D or the Motorola Photon 4G...
Thanks to anyone that reads or replies ...

Why would you want a photon, you would be downgrading, the tegra 2 chip is like a year old already and on top of that the bootloader is locked down tight, while ours is on the verge of being unlocked. I thought about the photon too but after some research I found this to be the better phone, and random reboots will be a thing of the past once we can start flashing and get off the sometimes buggy stock.

This right here. The only reason to switch is if you wanted the old HDMI cable to work and a kickstand.
I'm swapping for the photon. I've had too many problems. The 3d is a good phone but htc left a bad taste in my mouth. Just my opinion. PS there was a guy who bought a photon Dev phone early and he gave it great praise. In the end it just comes down to what makes you happy regardless of which processor is in it.

To both you and the OP, I guess the Photon looks good, if you don't want to root and run custom ROMS, then? If you do want to root and ROM, then I'd stick with the 3D. Or, get something you can run til the Samsung Galaxy S2 comes out. But, my husband has the Epic, also Samsung. It has little support for ROMS. He's probably going to switch to my OG Evo, now that I have the 3D. So many more ROMS for the OG Evo, and mine's already rooted...
I am so not a fan of Motorola phones. I think they have the worst design team out of all of the phone manufacturer's and they usually run as good as they look. (like sh!t)
Just watched a video of the Photon. Doesn't look too impressive to me. I noticed that it seemed to have a similar issue to some Samsung phones with the capacitive buttons not being that responsive and the kickstand (to me at least) seems stupid. I have an Evo 4G and never found a use for the kickstand. It was more of a pain in the arse to try and use than anything and it is a far more gimmicky feature than 3D would ever be.
But hey, whatever floats your boat. You might want to start asking for a Photon forum now if they don't already have one.
I had enough of the tegra 2... If you want a 2009( they started rolling out) chip on a 2011 device, more power to you.
I'm getting the photon4g for sure mainly because it's a world phone. Need it for use overseas as I don't wanna keep paying roaming fees. It gets pretty costly. Moreover it really issnt that bad specs wise for a second phone
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
It seems everything is coming out half-baked nowadays. The so-called gold standard, iPhone, even comes out half baked. Well it comes without features, that's just it's design, but I mean whatever it has came out troubled.
I went from the Samsung Epic to 3VO. If you think 3VO is half-baked, man, the Epic is worse. Sure you can root it, etc etc, but it was only until recently the DEVs here started fixing what Samsung couldn't, or rather wouldn't.
Personally, remain patient. The lack of patience is what's getting so many people into trouble nowadays :inserting rant: The Photon I bet will have some errors and a lack of an ability to do ROMs I bet.
HTC supports and respects the developing community, Motorola said in a press release "if you want to hack your phone, get an HTC". Basically giving the middle finger to the modders. That alone makes me not want to spen my money towards a company that wont listen to their customers. Plus it has blur...yuck.
Tegra 2 chipsets mite b a lil older but they perform way better den dual core snapdragons 3vo is not a true dual core imo
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
What makes it not a dual core? Does it only have half of a second core?
There is no "opinion " it either is a dual core or it isn't.
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.
I dont get why people are dissing the tegra 2 as if its some terrible chip when it's just as capable as the snapdragon in the 3D.. especially if you play games. Let's not let the fanboyism shade reality here. I'm just sayin...
Yeah I'm still undecided if I want to exchange the 3d for the photon. I guess the only thing holding me back is the uncertainty of ever obtaining root.

When I get home tonight...I will see if I can find the bench marks for the tegra 2 and the current chip in the EVO 3d. You will see the comparisons and will be suprised the one in the EVO 3d smokes and blows away the tegra 2. Its not even close if I remember...but my memory is going...
I would exchange the Evo 3d for another one. Mine doesn't do any random reboots.

Last I checked Snapdragon in the Evo 3D scored lower than the original Galaxy S line.
Photon and Evo 3D will both perform very well in games. Tegra 2 is losing it's touch though, just because it's becoming older. It's still good enough to keep up with current technology for at least the next year. And answer me this, is there a single android phone right now that doesn't have a root method? Trust me, the Photon will be rooted. The only problem is whether you'll be able to flash a custom recovery or not.

When comparing my E3D to my wife's Epic 4G my E3D wins in benchmark testing, though not by as much as would be expected. The hummingbird GPU was and still is pretty amazing and even with all of these dual core newer procesors coming out, it still hangs near the front of the pack.

Available upgrade use it now or wait?

Woo hoo guys and gals I just learned that I can get my upgrade now. I'm coming from the EVO 4G and want to know. Since u peeps already have the photon would u recommend me getting it or should I sit and wait and try my luck with the Samsung galaxy S2 coming out sometime this year? i came from the Evo4G and not regretted it a bit. I love the screen, best phone/3G/4G/wifi/gps signal there is, never a moment of lag, love the curved glass look and gunmetal trim, better camera than the Evo, great battery life, it's rooted and an unlocked boot loader is about to be released by XDA developers. If you get it now, you can always exchange it in 30 days or go back to your Evo.
If I was you I would wait. This phone is cool but if ur coming from an EVO I don't think u will be impressed. Ive had two customers who both came from EVOs return the photon and get the 3D cause they didn't like it. I love this phone but i could see why people like the EVO better. Just my two cents.

I am the exact opposite. i felt like I would have lost more going to the 3D. Yeah you get 3d, but no kickstand, 5MP camera versus 8MP etc. The photon has the specs of the 3D (dual core, qHD screen, camera button, etc) plus the missing feature of the EVO 4G (kickstand, higher res camera, HDMI out, solid build). In addition it adds features such as the sd card slot which is HOT SWAPPABLE plus onboard memory, GSM, brighter screen in sunlight etc.
Both phones look like they will now be rooted (or soon enough) and both seem to have some good developers behind them. I chose the Photon for the reasons listed above as well as the cool nickname (MoPho) and much less of a GUI overlay (non-blur vs sense).
These are MY reasons for going this right. Hope that gives you a good viewpoint to help you decision.
In regards to waiting, there is the GSII (rumors are swirling saying it may not have the exyanos <sp> chip), nexus 3 and iphone 5 coming out. Only lots of rumors on those for now though.

Yes, because they are morons.
This phone ****s Evo's. The Evo's hardware isn't even close to what this thing has. I have owned the Evo, and the 3d, the 3d is just a gimmick phone, that is all.
Lol - people are dumb
-Also, don't just ask this question in the Photon forums, of course they will say yes here. Do yourself a favor and do some research, go to some sites, read some reviews, learn for yourself and decide for yourself instead of having us make your decisions. The people here have it because they like it/love it. I loved my Evo don't get me wrong, but this phone is the next best thing, and in a year I will have the next best thing then, etc etc.
The galaxy s2 or whatever it is that Samsung is calling it won't hold a candle to this phone. But you could extend your 30 days period 3 times if the customer service rep you use is cool. (Sprint allows this, just keep getting a new photon until your gs2 comes out) And for f*cks sake don't exchange your phone at a corporate store, they suck.

First of all its preference when it comes to evo or photon... both have their advantages and problems, and i have both devices. With that being said I already returned one photon and grabbed a evo3d (how it all started) because of random resets and vibrations. But i was still so impressed with what the photon is CAPABLE of being i had to open another line just to have it as well. Let me dive into photon problems; aside from my first experience which i will blame on a faulty device, i am now experiencing these ghost calls people have been talking about... where basically no one is on the line but obviously they are (when call is received or dialed out even) i experienced this several times and ran into sprint to verify with manager.. we pulled the battery and everything is fine. Guessing though from other posts that this wont be the last time i deal with this though.
The EVO3D works but literally does everything the photon does a little worse. So if the Photon is actually working its flat out the better device, has better display... inky blacks, better viewing angles, etc. Better processor in terms of optimization for gaming, more available ram and app memory.
Now what i mean by preference is if you like to use these launchers that come with the devices; either blur or rosie (sense). If youre just going to take the phone out of the box and use it the evo really is the better experience due to the noticeable lag/choppiness of Blur, and the smoothness of Sense. It really is that big of a difference IMO. However if youre like me you are running launcherpro (paid) or adwEX... both phones are snappier after installing said launchers but the photon is much snappier due to the lesser integration of the UI.
So basically in short lol if the photon is actually able to make calls, and is running launcher pro (all speeds on 10, with all animations off) then yes hands down better than evo3d. I prefer evo out of box experience though, over the photon out of the box experience.

Honestly, I can't fathom going to this phone now given the issues that it has currently. If they really fix the call issues, I may come back to it. Given that they haven't with other Motorola phones exhibiting this problem I'm not holding my breath.
I loved much of the phone....the design, build quality, earpiece and rear speakers were superb. The phone was extremely fast but enough of a difference to switch up for that?
The lockups, inability to dial and silent calls on multiple handsets makes it kind of useless as an actual phone.
Also, after looking at the Photon screen side by side with my original EVO screen I would take the EVO screen every day of the week
BUT...had the Photon functioned on calls and not randomly shutdown, overall I would have preferred the Photon.
I'm not really a "sense" person I'm running a sense rom but I'm always running either go launcher or launcher pro anyway. I won't miss sense and I won't deal with blur. Once the phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked would it be possible for developers to fix at least most of the problems that r plaguing the photon right now since many issues seem to be more or less software issues?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
probably... but then again they may also bring more to the table....
I was in the same boat as you. I had previously had an evo 4g than traded for an epic. I fell in love with the samoled screen of the epic and was determined to use my upgrade on the sg2, as I've used the DROID charge and the samoled+ screen is beyond stunning. Well, I got sick of waiting and decided to give the photon a try a few days ago and figured if necessary I have the 30 day return policy. The photon is an awesome all around phone. Everything works, and its fast. I enjoyed the epic due to the screen, but gps was worthless and bluetooth and wifi were inconsistent. I am worried that although the sg2 may have the best screen, there are going to be other problems with the samsung build quality. The only negative about the photon is MOTOBLUR, which is much worse than sense and not even up to par with touchwiz. Alot of people complain about the pentile screen but I actually like it alot. Blacks are much deeper than my evo 4g and colors aren't washed out. The photon is an all around great phone, and every thing works(so far for me at least). I don't play games or anything so I can't comment on that, but every day tasks on this thing are fast.

I'm in the same boat as the OP...
Currently have the OG EVO, eligible for an upgrade and have been reading EVERYTHING and ANYTHING I can about this phone. Even though I'm still leaning towards getting it, there's a little voice in me saying to hang tight and see "what's coming around the corner." However, with technology, there will always be something better coming out next week, next month, or next year.
As for the Photon, I imagine the developer support that this phone will be receiving compared to the EVO and other HTC devices, won't be as as deep, especially if you're someone who IS coming from the EVO and used to that type of support. However, from what I've seen on this forum and others, the consensus seems to be that it's a great phone right out of the box. And if you're not a big fan of sense anyways and run your own launcher (like I do), then maybe it won't be that big of a deal.
More than likely, I'll be pulling the trigger and picking one up as soon as I get to a Sprint store to check one out. I'm just one of those types that always upgrades anyways and will likely be getting another phone next year too (assuming that I don't object to my wife's monthly shopping sprees so that I in turn, can "build up my credit" for justifying my annual phone purchases).
If I get the photon thru the corporate store vs best buy will I still get to keep my upgrade if I choose not to accept it before my 30 days are up.

I work for Sprint and was given both of them to use. I came from the EVO and loved it, so naturally I wanted to EVO 3D. I got it 2 weeks before the launched and loved it at first then the problems started. First the camera issues, when I take a picture it freezes up and I have to pull the battery to get it back. Sense 3 offers a lot of improvements to original sense (which I love) but has a few cosmetic flaws. I am not a stock Android fan, I love sense and it offers a lot of user friendly controls. I hate that every time I unlock the phone I get a wheel of screens and must wait a nano second to use the phone. The 3D camera isn't all that great and some 3D pictures gives me a headache, also the camera sticks out the back and if your not using a case, it can scratch the screen. Now I got my photon 2 weeks ago and I am amazed at how well it performs. I have not had any of the problems some people have, and I am already told that the problems will be fixed soon with the software upgrade. I missed my kickstand and the photon gives that back to me. The camera is nice, much better then the 3D. Only flaw I have with the phone is black, when you watch a movie the dark parts are really really dark and make it hard to watch sometimes. All in All I prefer it over the 3D, and I was never a Samsung fan so I wouldn't want the Within (galaxy 2). It took Samsung several months to upgrade to Android 2.2 and even then plagued with problems it had to be pulled twice, and the final version caused a few more texting issues and screen orientation issues that have yet to be fixed. Other problems with Intercept and Transform and no help from Samsung leaves me to never choice Samsung. Now the Nexus offers all the cool features of Samsung with none of their software issues since its pure Google.
I had the Evo 3D and liked it up to the point where I had lockups and tinny-sounding calls. I also experienced slowdowns and poor reception. When the Photon launched I checked it out, and decided to give it a try under the 30 day policy.
The build quality out of the box seemed better and the appearance was definitely more what I would expect from a top-end device. Once I booted up and began using it, I fell in love. The call quality is outstanding, speakerphone is excellent, battery life is great, and the screen is near-perfect.
It's obvious Motorola wants to be in the forefront of the portable device market once again. The Photon proves it.
I have not experienced any function issues at all with my MoPho. Smooth sailing here.
I came from the EVO4 where I kept getting low memory messages. EVO 3d has the same internal memory and I had no interest 3d. So far, I am exrememly happy with this phone. The build qulaity is superb. Its hard to put the phone down. I'm not so sure I would like thinner and lighter.....like Galaxy S2. The Photon gives you the feeling you have something. Believe me, the phone is not perfect. No phone is. But this is one of the best phones out there IMO. Do not hesitate one bit. Take the plunge.

I was able to use both the Evo 3d and Photon side by side for about 12 days and went with the Photon. I really liked both phones but I liked the additional memory and, in my experience, better battery life and reception.
But, I would wait a few weeks and see what comes of the Samsung GS2. It looks like an awesome phone but I'm always leary of their update cycle.

I agree about GPS, Bluetooth, and Wifi on the Epic, and would add in overall call quality and consistency as the reason why I'm sticking with the Photon no matter what specs the SGSII has. The Epic pretty much convinced me not to get another Samsung phone.
So, given that the competition for the Photon over the next six months or so on Sprint will be the Evo 3D and the SGSII, I think the Photon is by far the better choice. Great call quality, best speakerphone I've had on a smartphone, great performance, love that my Tegra Zone games bought for my Asus Transformer will run on it, great screen for outdoor viewing (perfectly usable at noon in the SoCal sun), rock-solid GPS and Bluetooth, great car dock accessory, solid build quality, and good battery life.
Just a great phone.
Had one, and took it back because of the call problems. Now I'll wait to see the GS2, and will weigh against the Photon again (if they fix it). Until then, my Evo 4g continues to rock on.

Feeling the Epic touch blues

Is it just me but i'm envying all the Epic touch owners. I now feel like my 3d is 2nd rate only after owning it for 2 months
It's called hype. They both pretty much on par with one another spec wise except the 3D has 3d and a higher resolution screen. Remember that iphone hype you resisted when you got a 3D it's the same thing
Don't worry about it.. next week you'll have a third tier phone the way this industry is speeding up haha.
I'm sure the SGSII is great and I want one... I'll probably end up buying on when they starting popping up on Craigslist so that I can check out Samsung's phones (I've always had HTC). Your phone is great... and really not too much different

Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
yeah ive had the sg2 for about 4 months now(unlocked version of course) but there was just something telling me that i wanted a evo 3d so as soon as the gsm version was available i jumped on it my thoughts were as follows i was going to have both of them one day i would put the sim card in one and the next day switch back to the other one. the sg2 has a beautiful screen and even though it views 1080p video which when playing you cant really tell that the 3d has a higher resolution. it has 16gb internal and i have a 32 gb sd card, so i got movies galore, no music though since i dont beleive in cd's anymore all the music is on my 32gb iphone 4 lol. now back on subject to me it was a win win situation, the best of both worlds ive had my 3d for about a month now and long story short sim card has been in it everyday. trust me you're not missing anything
I felt like that when the epic came out, got one and wanted to kick myself in the ass for doing so. The epic touch is cool now but in a couple of months when updates start rolling out and the forums are full of pissed off touch owners at no updates you'll be glad you have HTC. It could be different this time but I'm leaning towards not. Anyways my 2 cents
from my 333dddeeevvvooo
I played with the Epic Touch, and I can say I prefer the Evo 3D. QHD >>>>>> HDPI. The screen on the touch feels so bloated with the huge icons and fonts. Plus, my god, you can see the pixels. It's downright ugly. The Amoled is nice, but it's not worth it for that loss of resolution.
Exactly! The screen may be more vibrant but I would take 3D and QHD over better colors any day.
I played with the ET4G for a few hours yesterday when my bf picked one up, its not noticeably better or "lightyears" ahead like some are claiming. I couldn't even tell the difference speed wise. All I know is my 3D actually feels like a high end device, the Epic Touch feels like cheap plastic. Speakers were definitely better but the resolution and feel was a deal breaker for me. He returned it for another 3D.
I'm glad I got to try it out but I would have regretted trading for one. I'll wait for the Nexus or something.

Oh get a grip. They're both great phones and they both have issues to one degree or another.
If you're the type that likes keeping up with Android and are only content with the latest and greatest. You may wan't to make some more money and buy the phones as they drop every month or two.No way you will keep up and be happy on subsidized deals...
Dont go chasing Android waterfalls my friend.
i kinda felt the same when the epic came out when i had the evo 4g but then saw samsung pretty much abandon them so im not worried i wont buy a samsung phone until they prove they can update the phones they release.
Of course you're envying that sht...that's because it's a new high end phone and you don't have it. Just ignore it.

Pretty much this. 2-4 months from now, those Epic Touch owners will be making threads like "Anyone feeling the (insert phone model here) blues?" It's never going to end. That's why I love xda and its devs and helpful people here. Always something different you can do to your phone

The 3VO is still the one of the best phones out there and in 2 weeks there will probably be a new phone out there that's even better than the epic touch.
I still don't understand all the hype surrounding the Epic Touch 9 months after it has been released to the rest of the world; I'm not a fan of any specific phone brand, but there is a certain quality to the hardware and software of the EVO 3D that is only matched by he iPhone.
To me, the Epic touch with its plastic body and fisher-price interface feels cheap despite its great hardware.
I have no reception issues with my phone, I love the form factor and the resolution, and it's blazing fast.
its a nice phone but im not a fan of touchwiz and with that big of a screen i would have like to seen it be qHD resolution.

Coming from a g2x and a evo 3d to a photon now to the sgs2 I feel like it was a wise devotion to the brand I always come back too..... Ive only had it for 3 hours and I love it... I loved the evo 3d but the build quality\quality control sucked I have perfect reception and great gps with the epic touch ( I also owned a vibrant with tmobile horrible gps)
As for fisher price plastic interface and "cheap plastic" feel its alot better than the original sgs and im happy with it

if htc would have waited til oct. to release the 3d we would be still talking about holding out in the epic to get it. just because they released it earlier doesnt mean its older technology.

new here from evo4g forum

I just wanted to say wassup to every one. I am new here from the Evo 4g forums. I loved the evo 4g but got a chance to pick up a motorola photon for real cheap and I didn't have to sign a new contract. I am in love with this phone only wish it had more dev working on it but I know things will pick up soon.
this seems to be the fastest phone I ever owned. My cousin has an atrix with att, and I think my photon is faster.
The first day I got it I had some friends over and I was playing Galaxy on fire, one of my friends asked me what I was playing and I showed him, I then hooked up the photon to an HDTV that was like 22 inches. I started playing on TV and all my friends were jealous.
They said the games are the best graphics they'd ever seen on a phone.
jami1:
i moved from the original evo to the photon a few months ago and i haven't looked back.
not as active of a dev community because the bootloader hasn't been unlocked without side effects.
i suspect once that's resolved it will get much busier.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
I know there is a few things I am confused about though, one of them being that this is a tegra 2 device it should be able to play any game. I am also confused that I know chainfire 3d is used for devices that do not have tegra 2 SOC's but want to play the tegra 2 optimized games. Do I need to install chainfire3d to run non-tegra games?
Yeah, this phone is quick, and super smooth. Our kernels we have are smooth, fast and stable. Way better than the Evo. And the Dev support we have is amazing. They're super helpful and they keep up to date as best they can. I dig it.
As for Evo vs Photon, it's no contest, Photon wins hands down. But welcome to the community.

My thoughts exactly when I made the switch. I never thought I could love a Moto phone and much as my old RAZR. The Photon is great, although I have noticed the EVO's front camera was WAY better than the Photon's crappy VGA camera. It's a shame this phone hasn't received the explosion of attention the GSII, EVO 3D, and EVO 4G received, it is by far a better phone. I do like that we can have root without unlocking the bootloader too .
Welcome as you mentioned Us, me too come from Evo 4G. I love evo still now more than photon coz i was busy with different roms. Other than photon is super fast and playing game on HDTV that's wonderful. Hope our tireless mopho devs got some good roms
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
What is the benefit to all these ROM's? Are they really THAT different? You could just pick a good ROM then theme over it.
On the EVO roms made a huge difference...especially over stock..we had cm ..sense..and miui ..lots of diff kernels..unlocked alot of options the EVO didn't come with
I too came from the EVO...I would not of stuck with that phone if it was not for all the roms and kernels...seriously doubled my battery life and ran smoother
Out of the box my photon runs great way better battery life vs the custom EVO
The photon is a very refined supercharged EVO....once the base ground work is worked out im sure we will see some really cool dev work...their is a bounty on the bootloader ..looks like yay4juggs is getting closer to a solution
Anywho welcome to the forums
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
I never really got into modding my Evo. I couldn't figure it out and didn't know about XDA at the time, so I was kinda assed out. And I can understand three ROM's and a couple kernels to improve things. But are 40 different ROM's necessary? That's all I'm sayin'. There are three ROM's here. No CM7 or MIUI yet, but still, that should keep people happy, plus we have more kernel updates rollin' out.
Odd, I too came from the Evo and I see alot of the same names! That also means, unlike my other friends, you all are smart and have $$$. I got my Evo August 2nd, 2010. Photon cost me $650.00 to tell sprint to kiss my natural black........Actually, I just lied. I sold the Evo 2 days later for $300.00 so I really paid $350 for them to blow off.
Oh, and welcome over to the dark side!
Me too.. I came from evo.. extraordinary phone! I luv it but I just can't handle the camera. Now I have the photon and I still keep my evo on my other pocket. Overall I like the photon, speed, camera superb, audio. But, the pixelation (checkboard/screen door effect) is a major screen issue. And sometimes the colour wasn't right.

Getting rid of Evo, What should I get?!?

So now it turns out that the screen is broken on my Evo3D (bottom part of the touchscreen is irresponsible to touches) this is after the whole motherboard got replaced after I had the phone for a month, so my carrier will probably let me have a new phone, though I might have to cough up 50-100$ myself...
Not sure what I should get though, so I'd appreciate some input!
I could get an Evo3d for free, but my faith is HTC just isn't what it used to be. It's not just the poor quality of the Evo3D I'm talking about (the touchscreen issue seems to be fairly common) it's also the fact that HTC is making us Evo3D owners wait until at least summertime to get ICS update, which is just unacceptable for what was sold as a top of the line phone...
Moto RAZR
They'd give me the Droid RAZR for 50 bucks, and I'm pretty tempted, since it looks like a nice phone. A great SAMOLED+ QHD screen (Yes I know about the pentile), expandable up to 48gb, a pretty good camera, and super thin Kevlar surface all line up for a pretty sweet package. The only thing kinda holding me back, is that the SGX540 GPU in it is kinda old, battery life is supposed to be just average, and the camera, while good, isn't as good as in the Samsung GSII or iPhone 4S.
Galaxy Nexus
I miiight be able to get a Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Note if I cough up 100-200$ but not sure if I should go for it. Yes, it has an awesome screen and ICS, but whatever Android phone I get will have ICS in the next 3 months or so. The downside is a kinda old CPU/GPU combo (OMAP4430 and SGX540), a 5 mp camera, average battery life and only 16gb storage.
iPhone
Depending on what I'm willing to spend, they'll let me have an iphone4 for free, or 4S if I put down some cash. Between 50 and 200$ all depending on the 16/32/64 gb model. Now I know the iPhone option is kinda controversial, and if you had asked me a year ago, I'd never get an iPhone. But lately, I've gotten kinda disillusioned with Android. Even on a high end model like the Evo3D or SGSII isn't as smooth as iOS, and lag, even if very slight, is almost always present if you go to a list, for example. Theres also the issue of hardware quality and service. The last six months I've spent a couple dozen hours either trying to get an Android phone fixed, fixing issues with it, or taking it to repairs hops and waiting days or weeks for it to be repaired. With Apple you don't have to deal with all of that. They DO give really, really great service. If you take a broken phone to the Apple store, they often just outright replace it, and that counts for something IMHO.
I've had an ipad2 for the past 5 months, and I've really gotten to appreciate how fast and smooth the experience is, and how everything just works. The other advantages would be iMessage/FaceTime, which is really cool, having my phone work great together with my iPad, and the whole Apple ecosystem. Cameras are also top of the line, from what I've seen, and battery life is really good.
I know of the downsides with getting an iPhone, the biggest one would be the 3.5 inch screen. No matter how awesome, bright and sharp it is, it will take some getting used to, to go from a 4.3 inch screen to a 3.5 inch screen.
Other phones, like a Samsung or HTC are also available for me to get, this is just my top3. I'd really appreciate your input, and let me know what phone you'd get next in my situation... Thanks!
Based on your phone listing's looks like you have the GSM version. I would go with either the GN or the Note if it is not to big for you.
The GSM GN has pretty good battery life from what I have seen. The CDMA is not as good which is that I own. Needs the extended battery on CDMA to get decent life. There are a lot of people with the GSM version who get an average of 5 hours on-screen time. To me that is some pretty good battery life.
The downside like you said is only 16gigs of storage on the GSM GN without an SD slot. I just do not get that at all! Why only 16 on a device that cannot be expanded! Luckily the CDMA version came with 32gigs.
I owned the CDMA EVO 3D back in the day, then went to the Epic 4G touch which blows the 3D away. The GN is more in a league with the SGS2 then the EVO 3D. The GN is super smooth.
I personally stay away from Moto's, especially if you like to flash things...
I have been really fortunate not to have any trouble with my evo 3d. I also had the og evo before the 3d.
My next phone will not be htc though. Im very disappointed about ics being pushed back.
Anyway, from your list of phones to choose from i would not hesitate on switching. To the galaxy nexus. Ive had a chance to play around with it a few times and really love it. Updates will always be faster to and of course it comes with the new chip for mobile purchasing. Really comes down to your personal preference and needs really. Your listed phones are all great products. I will never purchase an apple product, but i know a lot of people that love them. Good luck to you.

There's no way of telling about the updates. Google's last flagship device has been completely ignored and won't get ICS. Doesn't really matter to me as I have faith in the xda community to get any updates on to it.

I'm Motorola Xoomin on you!
Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S2 i9100. Those two phones are by far the best supported phones development wise on this site. It's only going to get bigger with the GS2 likely decreasing if the GS3 makes a big enough impact.
No HTC phone besides the Sensation compares development wise right now. A few legacy devices here and there, but for the specs, the two phones I mentioned above cannot be beat right now.
I'm in the same boat, well I'm selling mine, I'm so disappointed in HTC, too many freezing up and restarting by itself on stock rom, moving on

Thanks! The one thing I REALLY liked about the Evo was the QHD screen. So I really don't want to go back to an 800*480 screen. The Moto Razr and Galaxy Nexus have pretty much the same CPU/GPU right? OMAP 4430/60

They more or less are the same CPU. I would head over to the Galaxy Nexus forums and learn more about their processor and how it actually is a pretty remarkable in performance. Google picked out nice specs for their flagship.

Lol I saw you post in a thread the other day that your next phone will either be an iPhone or a windows phone haha
Evo3D.
evo 3d seems very cheap now for a (once high end) mid range phone.
I've had nothing but good luck with my Evo 3d and love it, only thing i dont like is the flimsy backing plate. From reading your post i cant help but ask were you rooted? There are tons of great roms and app mods available in the forums here, all solve numerous issues and improve upon stock in any number of ways.
As far as choosing a phone goes, if you can get a new 3d free I'd stick it out and wait to see what's available withing the coming months, MWC just finished up and there were tons of greats devices announced.
Otherwise GSII gets my vote.
