might be swapping notes... re-set to stock? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So I've got the hairline crack in my white note as many others do. I'm probably going to take it back and look for an exchange. I couldn't really care less about that crack but I suppose if I can I might as well (and to not risk it getting worse). I'm running RC6 right now. If I'm returning for a manufactures defect like this, should I bother resetting my phone? I'm going to assume they won't even turn on the phone to look at it but I've never done an exchange so want to get opinions here. Also do I need to bring back all paperwork and the box and everything? I'm within the 30 days.

To be completely safe, I would flash back to stock and reset the flash counter. Better safe than sorry. It's easy enough, and totally worth it in case ATT tries to pull something. And just be prepared and bring everything with, the reps will help you with what you need to return.

So, Ive done a few returns myself on actual defective phones.
The first thing is, after you go to the store, you will have to go to a separate location to actually return the phone. My experience was that I didnt have to bring anything other than the phone.
After you go to the second location, they will pop out the battery, sim card, and sd card (if present) from your defective phone and put it into a refurbished replacement - it will not be a brand new phone.
You will not get a new box, cables, charger, sim card, or battery, nor will you need to bring anything other than the original phone, battery, and sim card.
They will check three major things - water damage via a small white sticker underneath the back panel of the phone (if its pink, they will claim water damage and not exchange the phone). Im not 100% sure if this phone has a shock indicator which indicates whether the phone was dropped or had any hard impacts (very similar to the white sticker scenario but its a clear piece of plastic or glass usually found right next to the water damage indicator - if its broken / cracked, they will not exchange the phone), if it does, they will check that as well. They will also look for any rust / oxidizing in all of the connectors (headphone jack, usb input, battery contacts on both the battery and the phone). They will also check to see if the phone boots and will perform a factory reset and make sure it boots after it has been reset (so make sure you have everything backed up and make sure you take your sim card out and leave it at home when you do the return, just in case the factory reset formats your sd card).
A few ancillary things they may check is to see if you replaced the recovery menu with something other than the stock 3e recovery and they may check to see if the phone is rooted, both of these would void the warranty so it might not be a bad idea to flash back to stock and reset the flash counter yourself, if you have changed the recovery with something like clockwork recovery or you rooted the phone. More than likely, they wont check anything like kernel versions or anything seen in the settings menu so if it looks like a stock rom and has all the bloatware they are used to seeing, they likely wont know the difference.
Oh yea, boot animation changes are an obvious give-away. If the boot animation is changed, restore to stock and reset the flash counter.
What YOU need to make sure is that the refurb phone they give you has not had the flash counter tripped BEFORE you leave the store. Apparently, if you should need to do a return directly to Samsung at a later time, the flash counter could create problems. There apparently is a method for resetting the flash counter but you shouldnt have to fix it, ATT needs to give you a phone that hasnt been flashed.
Since the box, charger, cable, and receipt arent that big of a deal to grab and bring with you just in case, I would bring them but I dont think you will need them.

Sounds like a bit much work for such a minor issue...maybe I'll call and see what the stores policy is. Thanks!

The screen on my first note would not work with any s-pen at all.
They tried several different pens in the store, no response at all. They exchanged that one for a bread new device right there in the AT&T store. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes
Granted i had just bought the phone the day before so ymmv depending on how long you've actually had the device.
Over 30 days and you'll most likely have to jump through more hoops

Super Urgent..

First of all I admit that i have done stupid thing.
Before telling this I did HSPL to flash radio rom.
Yesterday I dropped my phone.
And from that time on vibration hadn't worked and booting phone by its own hardware buttons also,not working.
But I found booting only works by following method:
plug in charger while battery is out and then press as soon as battery is inserted again.
Now, what I committed to fix my vibrator was that i tried to disassemble and I got stuck at separating the housing with the screen one.
But I just adadoned to fix it and assembled it again.
After I booted my phone by that strange method above, the touch screen did not work.
So I pressed reset button at the back.
Now it is stuck at the first HTC logo screen. (think it is bricked?)
However It doens't show any information about R,G,D just the logo.
Many time till now the result is the same.
Now my question is...
My warranty is not over yet so I think I can get the new one.
However what interrupts my mind is that "what if they find out it is HSPL?"
But my opposing the question above is that can they see if I did HSPL or not since bootloader doesn't work, and proper powering on of the device doens't work either.
So what is you guys opinion will I be ok to get new one without being accused..?
My other concerns are that what if the boot loader suddenly works... and they find out!!?
And also what if they find out that i disassembled once.. cause the screws look touched..
lol while editting.. the phone got RGDs back although it seems it is rare,now it means there is chance for them to notice it..
You will find that your warranty does not cover accidental damage, so the shop you purchased it from probably will not replace it.
Unless you took out insurance at time of purchase that covers accidental damage.
Your best option, is to claim under your household contents insurance, but once again, check that mobile phones are covered, some policies do not, as it is an item you take out of house.

unless you have insurance I cant see you being covered I hope you are though, any form of insurance with the HD2 is a must imo
HSPL + visible damage from the fall + disassembly evidence (there's a sticker on a screw that will be broken if you unscrew it, to show it's been opened) = definitely no warranty.
Even if there was any chance you could claim warranty, HSPL modification alone would void it. And unfortunately there is no way to revert unless you install a stock ROM from SD Card. I know it very well cause I just did it yesterday. Had to send mine to claim warranty as the touch screen failed...

FFC modded Vibrant warranty exchange?

I currently have a FFC modded vibrant and its acting up. I know this is an issue with some phones where it thinks the usb cable is plugged in when its not.
This just started happening yesterday after getting the phone on the day it was released. I have Odined back to stock, changed usb settings and multiple reboots the problem still exists in addition it needs to be plugged in to boot up. I got on the phone with TM and they thought it would be a good idea to replace it. So the rep proceeded to give me all the terms and asked me to give her the IME number and so forth. I then turned the phone back on and now its working fine. The replacement phone is on its way already. When she was reading me the terms she specified if the phone is damaged in anyway I will be charged $400+ for it and by doing this I have waived them replacing it for the insurance deductible.
Has anybody successfully covered that hole up so its not noticeable? And what steps were taken?
Should i just take a chance with my current phone and keep it although the problem might come back?
EDIT: It just started happening again after plugging it in with the official cable which feels kinda loose, I used a BlackBerry one which feels nice and tight right before and it was fine.
If it acts fine send them the new one back call them and tell them you figured it out you might not be able to replace it if it acts up again though cause you will be passing this replacement up

You opened the phone, which voided the warranty. I can't see any way of you easily covering the hole in a way that they won't notice it. You're likely going to be coughing up the $400.

Smoke when recharging...

I have had my Samsung Galaxy S2 for a bit more than a year now. I have had some proper trouble with it from the start (ranging from forced close loop to rebooting or simply turning off randomly).
About half a year ago I installed a custom rom (GalaxyMOD I believe), with which I had little to no issues (thanks for providing those, by the way).
This morning it wouldn't turn on (even though it was on before I went to sleep). I simply thought the battery was low (it had reasonable % the night before, though) and connected it to my charger. Then, all of a sudden, smoke came out of my phone near the micro-USB port. I immediately removed the charger.
Just to be sure, it's impossible that the custom rom caused this, right? I'm thinking that somehow the inside must have gotten damp. Should this be the case, will it still qualify for warranty service? I mean, the smoke was not caused by irresponsible use. Of course, the phone might have been dropped once or twice since I own it, but that's still no reason for the smoke to occur... I didn't place it anywhere different than I do usually during the night and it has never directly been in contact with water (I don't use it in the rain f.e.).

Dam, i know you can alter the amount of juice through a USB cable to fast charge but it should be no where near enough to cause ignition or
smoke.
Even if the phone was damp it isn't going to generate that amount of heat to get smoke.
And even if you had a bunch of lint (dust) in the exact right place you still shouldn't have smoke.
Im at a complete loss as to why this has happened??
sounds like a serious issue, have you dropped the phone?
IF the phone is damp, best way to get rid of that is to place it in an air tight container overnight covered in dry rice.
The dry rice will slowly pull any damp into the gains and out of the phone.

1) If it's been exposed to moisture, unlikely to honour warranty regardless of what's wrong with it. Depends on whether the moisture indicators in the phone have been tripped
2) Rooting/flashing non-stock firmware on your phone voids the warranty. Having said that, if you go back to stock firmware & reset the flash counter, many people still get warranty service. Tho in your case 1) is a concern.
In other words, go back to stock, reset the flash counter & send it in to Samsung/authorised repairer & see what happens if the rice trick doesn't work.

Yes, I have dropped the phone. However, the last time I dropped it was at least three weeks ago and I have recharged it without any problems multiple times since then.
I would like to try the rice idea. Do I need to take anything into account when doing so? Like removing battery, or even disassembling it?

I would love to go back to stock, but how can I do this? It won't boot and it won't connect with my PC either.

Give it a few days in the rice as Hypnobabes suggested & see if you can get it to boot. If not, you're going to have to take your chances, send it in & see what happens. If they do want to charge you for the repair, ask them for a quote. If you're not happy with the price, ask around local mobile repair shops & see if they'll fix it more cheaply.

[Q] [Advice] Galaxy SIII completely dead?

Guys I owned a Galaxy SIII white GT-19300... had it for 3-4 months, bought it brand new. used really carefully, only had one or two falls that's it.
Finally it decided to crap all of a sudden like it had a silent heart attack, just a couple of hours ago. It wasn't charging or was in process of updating or anything. Just that I was sitting and having a sms conversation where in the middle it just won't budge at all. It just went completely pulseless.
These are the symptoms:
-No display
-Won't power up by any means
-No charging light
-No sign of booting up
What I tried:
-Hard reset
-Remove SIM and SD card, still no activity
-Swapped battery of working S3
What should be the next step?. Thankfully warranty period hasn't elapsed yet.
How should I approach now?. Will the warranty company replace the set or more likely create some unsolvable obstacles, like them assuming fall or label the phone rooted etc?

Warrant may be void if its rooted or custom rom or modified status or rom counter above zero .
No way to reset those on a non booting phone .
Dropped damage incurred again who knows until they take the phone apart .

If the phone's truly hard-bricked, there's no way the service center would be able to discern that. Dead is dead.
Agreed, if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.

it sounds like you really did everything right to troubleshoot it huh.. well let me just throw a few things out, you probably didnt, but hopefully did overlook..
the cord you're trying to charge it with, could it be not working/charging it?
have you tried another cord, or maybe even a USB cord? was it plugged in when it died? some low quality/defective cords can have some weird effects on phones, like less responsive digitizers, or even short out a phone
did you have any custom CPU settings? over/under clock/volt? had you played with you min/max CPU settings?
it doesn't turn on, did you determin this by seeing no display? seeing if there's any hapticfeedback, or even calling it from another phone and seeing if it rings on the callers side.
I know it seems silly but I'm just throwing out things from personal expirence ..
so now your phone really is dead, well having it under warrenty is great. having worked at an AT&T corporate retailer, I can tell you what happens on our side when you bring in a damaged phone.. well try it ourselves, well ask what happened, if you don't know well ask things like, 'did you drop it', 'or it was in contact with water'. (were actually required to ask, since these things aren't covered under warranty. which let me say, is so broken that we push the extended warranty on you, because it covers basically nothing.. we have a quota that says we need to sell X amount of a list of product/services each month.. but I digress).. anyway, once you tell us it just died out of nowhere we take your phone, put it in an envelope and ship it back to the manufacturer. in the mean time well offer you a loaner phone if you need one (just whatever we have on hand at the time, usually phones we get from trade-ins) (you keep your battery and sim) , and we put a 50 dollar hold on your card (yes on a creditcard, not your account) until your phone comes back in and we get our loaner phone. they'll send you a phone back to us, not yours, usually a refurbished version, then we call you and let you know your phones ready.
NEVER have I ever seen or heard anything ever of checking for root. most of our reps don't even know what that is.. once we submit a replacement form, the new phone is on transit to our shop usually by the next day (meaning they send out the replacement before they get the one we sent).
my advice is once you're sure the phone is dead, take it in to your retailer, tell them it died out of nowhere while you were texting, and it won't turn back on. you don't need to go into anymore detail than that..

Didn't mention it. I underwent much thoroughly then what I typed.. Yup tried 3 different cables, couple of chargers, usb cable.
And no it really wasn't plugged in. I really was expecting a sms at that time, when it took too long, I took it out from the pocket and voila DEAD!

Tried everything you mentioned and even more then that!
yup lifeless like a brick.
** By the way an incidental finding found before claiming warranty. While having the battery in the phone. It was still warm. Removed it. Became cooler, upon reinstall, it became warm again. What gives??!

Thanks for the detailed reply man, really appreciated. Especially since I was already trying to read the minds of these warranty dealers!
So just a while ago I gave it in for warranty. I was adamant of it going dead while I was doing an sms (although true!).. just said no to whatever cause they tried to find (wasn't any, honest!). They were pressing me though for the graze it got (a month ago).. I said 90% of the phones are scratched, and how many do die? He went okay we'll see then, 'yeah you are right we buy that, most that gets damaged from a fall is a phone with shattered screen!"'. Next question, the tricky one!. Did you modify/update software?
I was like, I keep my phones as stock and was totally acting alien to terms like 'rooting' 'firmware' 'kernel' etc (not being honest, but i'm sure that's not the cause)
He was like okay hand it over, we'll do the rest!
Hopefully they don't ever get to revive the mobo or i'm screwed for real!
my phone just died after flashing morfic A10 kernel. i am running stock rooted rom and the best part my sgs 3 was bought 11/18/12 from target, cant go to download mode, cant go to recovery i even tried adb recovery and download mode hoping to turn on nada, charge for an hour no led flashing. my sgs3 totally dead. called target and they said just bring it and they will replace it with new one if the phone wont turn on. is that mean i will be okay even my phone is rooted?

Thank God.. got my SIII fixed in warranty, now it's back to life!
Just had a motherboard replacement, no further details given.
Hence kind of proven!:

Accessing files on a locked Redmi Note 4 - is there any way how?

The short story is, a month into using my phone, and the housing bent on me; and around 5 months of using this, the ribbon cable of the LCD ripped since it was exposed all the time. The phone is still working, but obviously you can't control it. Before I have it repaired, I'd like to back up my entire internal storage first. However, since the screen won't detect anything, you can't set it up.
It's non-rooted, but I don't remember whether I unlocked the bootloader. I don't really know how to get it to recovery either, because you can't manually turn it off since it can't detect touches, and you know MIUI's turn off option (press and hold power button won't do the trick). Otherwise, you'll just have to drain the battery. When you charge it again, it'll automatically turn on and do a normal boot. Btw, it's still running the vanilla 7.0 ROM it came with.
I need to have everything backed up because the store I bought it in won't honor the warranty and want to charge me around $95 for parts replacement. Nice scam. Anyway, it'll take me some time to find a repair shop that has spare parts for this (since the housing is bent beyond repair as well). 'Til then, I really gonna need to re-obtain the files stuck in my phone. Thank you very much!
