anyone here have a kindle fire? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I was wondering if any of you guys have a kindle fire? I have the note, and I was thinking about it, I just don't know since I already have the note..... I would like the opinions of the people that DO own both...

I have both. I have cm7 running in my fire. I use the fire for reading, games, YouTube, and Netflix. The note I use for everything else. Honestly I could do without the fire and be fine but I do appreciate having it to run the battery down instead of my note. My note had pretty bad battery life, but I'm on it all the time.

Is the kindle slow and or buggy/laggy? How is it reading on it vs the note?

My wife has a kindle fire. Its awesome as an ebook and video device along with our prime account. Build quality and battery life are pretty good as well.
I don't know how it performs as a dedicated tablet since its running the stock rom. Over all it isn't as versatile as my note and its not a replacement for my ipad2. My wife loves it tho and for the price its hard to beat.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Its not too much bigger than the note, I don't find myself picking it up over my note ever and my wife still takes my ipad from time to time.

I use the Fire as an eReader, I don't have much use for it besides that. Its running CM7 and it has bugs, most notably the sleep of death which is not a big deal. It's great as an ereader and comic reader though. If you're looking for a tablet, I'd still go iPad, refurbished are so cheap and so well built, its an easy decision.

I just need/want a good Ereader with some side options, to do homework and such.... I don't need a full fledge tablet... is it choppy/buggy/laggy with the 6.3 update? I also like the fact that updates are very quick...

lol with all the ICS hoopla going on I don't think I'll get any replies... hehe

I seen your post last night but I was too busy with the whole ICS leak
But the Kindle is actually a great device for your basic needs. I sold my iPad2 because I really did not see myself using it much and decided to have all Android devices in my home as well. I seen all these complaints about the bugs and lag but I have not encountered any. The silk browser is solid but I do not see all the hype behind it. 6.3 is already rooted so if you do not like the stock look you can also install go launcher. The device is great to read and feels natural(like a book) instead of holding a big 9.7 inch screen. I have read The Walking Dead comic on my KF and it is a very enjoyable reading experience. There is nothing cheap about the device. I recommend the device and if your into gaming on your tablet, someone on the amazon website said that it can handle games such as shadowgun and GTA3...but i have not tried them personally.

[DISCUSSION] What are you using it for?

So... for $99, this is a steal.. but I have to say I'm already being tempted to sell it for an android tablet... which sadly, I don't have yet. I'm thinking a nook color would be a good place to start given the support, hackability and size.
BUT
I'd LOVE to hang on to the touchpad but with WebOS seemingly going the way of the dodo bird I don't have much hope in the way of app support.
So... give me some creative and useful ideas... how are you using your touchpad aside from the obvious websurfing and book reading?
I don't have mine yet.. so ARE there any killer apps on it that i'm just not aware of yet?
Im using it for its single most intended and greatest function..
Reading XDA and [H]ardforums on the crapper..

lol
thinking of using it as a universal remote, add an IR dongle and it would end up being cheaper almost all remotes, and it will have 10 times the functionality
I have an Advent Vega, a ASUS Transformer and now a touchpad. I would say the touchpad compares nicely with the transformer. If you paid ~£89 for it (as I did) I wouldn't sell, it really is quite functional, and that is assuming it never gets a port of HC/ICS.
Personally I'd use it for the same sort of things I use my TF101 for, that is web browsing/RSS viewing/Facebook/Twitter/PDFs/Ebooks/Video/Music on a big lovely screen
I had a nook color. It was okay. The touchpad is about a million times more functional. It has so much horsepower that it simply doesn't slow down (after a few tweaks). It runs flash and HTML5 with ease that the lack of apps is solved by using web apps. I can definitely see myself skipping Android and keeping WebOS in the future...

God dammit! That was my line.
I use it for porn as well. What else is it good for? Porn on a 4" screen isn't cutting it for me anymore.

School, way lighter than a laptop and faster then a netbook. do you know how easy it is to have the assignment, research, or random web page laying next to the paper you are writing on? Well worth the money even if android doesn't get ported.
I will buy it if you can't figure out a creative use for it.

Desk clock.
Use it for my business. Most of my business apps I use are web base.
as a Kindle for my daughter, she loves it.
I actually have had a Nook Color for a while myself. The Touchpad is still trying to update, but performance-wise they seem pretty similar actually (the NC is overclocked). The bigger screen is nice, and I really really am liking WebOS, at least just from a spit-and-polish perspective.
So far the Touchpad is destined to be a radio in the kitchen, and probably a recipe machine, along with maybe a calendar/weatherman. We'll see I guess. I also have some PDFs I need to read which *just* don't fit well on the NC. I wish it could do netflix or hulu to open up its potential as a media center.

[Q] touchpad worth it?

is this device worth <200$? opinions on your device please, and also thoughts on before/after android porting!
i have the option of getting a 16 or a 32 for <200$ and am wondering if this is a piece of junk or worth getting.
or if i should just get something like a kindle fire.
uses: entertainment, ereading, videos, games, actually wtf do people use touchpads for????
ICS source is out so HE** the F*** YES it's worth it!
it was worth it b4, now I'm going to be busy.
lol
I use my touchpad for everything I need to do. The webos side has good apps for work and the cm7 side gives me netflix, games, video, photos, skype, ect... the TP is a very usefull tablet. If you get one for 200 and find you don't like it, PM me and we might be able to work something out, especially if you get the 32GB unit.

I just put CM7 Alpha 2.1 on it this weekend and it is amazing how well an Alpha is running on this thing. If you can get a 32 gig for less than $200 you aren't that far off from the fire sale price.
I have a Nook Color with CM7 as well. I think both size devices have their merits so it depends what you want to use them for.
seems like everyone loves it with the new ports!
can someone comment on how the TP improved from the original OS to the android?
more interested in the before/after thing. im figuring that if you do not mod it at all, it is truly a POS.
I actually like WebOS.
I'm in WebOS most of the time.
that might change once ICS comes over.
webOS, you will use most of the time because it's nice to be in and it's the most useful. You can get to where you need to be quick. Skype call? No problem. Email? Coming right up. And while I'm reading a Wikipedia page and Facebooking at the same time, I can buy a scooter from Amazon. Not to mention reading a magazine and downloading podcasts and listening to music. I can do every single one of those things, all at one time.
That's the point of getting a tablet, right?
That's just it. webOS puts you at the center of all the action. It's a tablet in the way it's supposed to be.
That's something no other tablet can do. Anywhere. It's unmatched. And on top of allllll that, you still have the latest version of Android. Useless?! It's the furthest thing from.
oh didnt know you can have BOTH android and webOS. weird.
why do people have gripes about webOS then?
i already have a samsung galaxy phone, so i dont want the same thing but bigger (unless i can read better on it)
Exactly.
In order to be a good operating system, everything has to come together. You cannot miss one thing. WebOS has an app store, but you won't see many big name companies (the ones that matter) developing apps for it.
The problem with A & I tabletwise is that it doesn't work that different from your phone.
Which means the productivity, is not there.
I'm in Android watching a YouTube video, but as soon as I open another webpage, the video stops.
I'm in iOS and I get an email, or I want to look up how to beat this level of Angry Birds, if I enter the Internet, bye-bye Angry Birds, I have to start all over.
Those are big problems. WebOS saved us from that.
While you can do more in webOS, the ironic thing is, there's less apps, so you can't use that fantastic multitasking on everything you would like to.
So webOS used to be on thin ice, but better apps are coming in.
Still, this is a big problem for any tablet maker. We need a system where you can just push apps to make them compatible with any tablet device, or we are going to be stuck with iOS and Android as the only operating systems there are.

If you don't mod the TouchPad, it's not truly a POS. with the original firmware, yes, it's the most laggy experience ever. But ever since the latest official firmware update, it becomes infinitely more usable.
If you apply the relevant preware patches and overclock on top of that, it becomes pretty darn snappy.
So WebOS is definitely still alive and kicking.
The latest CM Alpha is indeed impressive. But I still have trouble using it as my daily OS primarily due to the faster battery drain. But I'm sure that's just a temporary issue.
At the firesale price of $99 for a 16GB, it's a steal. I would say that it would even be worth it at $200.
But keep in mind that you're within range of getting one of these:
Kindle Fire is $199
Nook Tablet is $249
Personally, I want another one. Currently using my TP as my main computing device. Have CM installed, and barely using it, honestly.

Woth it? Well, if there will be a stable ICS port, and you understand what is a tablet and how you could use it, it's worth it, i guess. Personally, after i bought it i understood that there are quite few tasks that i could use a tablet for, so this thing just lies on my table, collecting dust.
Anyway, if you are going to buy TP NOW, better look in the Nook Tablet direction: for $250 you will have more compact tablet with better CPU/GPU and microsd slot.
I'm sitting at my laptop, but I'm using my TouchPad anyway because it's so fun to use.
I have to agree with Unrealwolf. If you have a purpose for a tablet, it is a good one for the price. It would be nice to have the SD Cord slot but the only reason I filled up my 16GB is because I put on 2GB of music and 20 full length MP4 movies.
At home I seldom use my laptop because I do all my email, social networking, and web browsing (ie. shopping, research, and forum updates) on a tablet (I have both a TP and a Nook Color). Very much worth it to me.
doh the deal got away
should i continue hunting or go for a fire/nook? not sure how well they compare but prices are close
Not too sure yet about the new nook tablet but the fire is getting some less than stellar reviews today. Seems to be a bit laggy. After using my touchpad for a while, I have a hard time going back to my nook color 7 inch screen. I am actually starting to develop apps in enyo for the touchpad. I really like webos as well as cm7. For me, the touchpad gives me the besr of both worlds.

Who here uses both a Tablet and the Note at home?

Just curious those of you that replaced their Android/iPad or no longer use it since they got the Note.
I am gonna get a Transformer Prime today but wandering if i will be overwhelmed with the Prime and Note. Or figuring if its necessary especially after the 650 i dropped on the Note lol.
I love my Note especially on the go. But its nice to have that extra real estate at home and of course more gadgets. But was debating $650 with the dock is expensive. But i currently have no laptop or netbook and the Prime seems.perfect for my needs.
I basically browse web, play nes and snes emulators. Email, root and Rom hacks. Obviously id take advantage of the Tegra 3 and game more.

I rarely use my iPad 2 at home now.
I too am buying a Transformer Prime today from gamestop.
and i have a Note, and a Laptop at that( Tech nut) but i dont see why it would be over whelming. i like you will be using the Prime for home and when in the car my kids and play on it in the back seat. and my note is my daily driver.
the money issue, is not a big deal for me anymore, but i can see how that would make u want to wait or quesiton the want to get one. the Note can suffice for your needs if your strapped thats for sure.
but i must have both, having given my 10.1 galaxy tab to my mom....i want a replacement.
Really? Very interesting. Curious too see who does.

Small world, Im getting mine from Gamestop too. Free Tegra 3 games! Are you getting a dock? I think its a must have i got my GF one and its pretty awesome.

Just about reaching a full day with my Note and I realized today I used my iPad about 1/4 as much as I typically would.
I found the following: 1) Note is always with me, so its more convenient than the iPad 2) I am typically referencing something else on my Note so its faster to continue using it for the next task. 3) Of course right now there is a newness factor to it but overall I still think I find it more convenient to grab than the iPad.
I will have to see what my behaviors are in the future but for now I don't think my iPad is going to get much use.

You might want to look into the PS Vita if you're looking to game on the fly...
IMO, the note can duplicate MUCH of the functionality of the TPrime. All you would need is the MHL adapter to connect to a bigger display (TV/LCD monitor), bluetooth input devices and you're good to go.
I currently have the (not counting computers/laptops) ipad 2, Acer A100 7" tablet, and recently purchased the Vita - specifically because I found smartphone/tablet games lacking in depth.

same , i use ipad at home, but for regular stuff like reading on train "kindle" i use the Note
I almost never use my GNote at home unless it is for phone calls. I use my macbook or if watching netflix my ipad. I mean the GNote screen is great but not when I have 13 and 10 inch screens at home...or a 24 inch desktop
I had an iPad 2 (now sold, maybe getting iPad 3 later) and hardly used it since I bought my Note. Use an iPhone 4s for on the go phone so Note pretty much acts like a mini tab.
Actually ive been reading great reviews on the Acer A200. Especially for the $350 price mark and it just got Android 4.0 ICS. Really pondering going with something like this.
Acer A200 10.1" $350
PS Vita Bundle $300
Also have a BB $30 gift card. So makes it actually $620 total.
Same price as if i got the Transformer Prime & the Dock for $650. Hmmmmm. Honestly Tegra 3 is awesome but i do most of my gaming on Xbox and would rather have a Vita for gaming and use the tablet for NES, SNES & N64 emulation.
Still rocking my Xoom with the Bugless Beast ICS ROM, PS Vita First Edition Bundle and my Note are my main electronic devices.

[Q] Best Android Tablet on the Market

Here is my question, I'm looking for a really good tablet with great battery life and I wanted to get the Vibrant community's opinion as to which is the best.
Please refrain from posting about apple products I simply do not like apple as a company and refuse to give them my business.
I would appreciate it if in addition to your selection you could tell me your reason for feeling why its the best.
- Cheers
I picked up an Asus Transformer (OG-not the Prime) a few weeks ago at Best Buy for $399 (Bob Shute almost convinced me to get the Nook Color though). It was the 32gb on sale for the same price as the 16gb (so why not) + it has external, so i have 64+/-gb of storage. I had lurked in a bunch of forums checking out support, ROMs, rootable, "official" ICS and general attitude of the forum members.
When I got it out of the box it was running 3.1 and I had known that it had an OTA update waiting. Within 30mins of getting it, I had upgraded, Rooted and was on my way to being a tablet owner. It was real easy to do too. The battery life on 3.2.1 was really good. Granted I am not using it all day long but I was getting about 2-4 days out of it. Kids would play games, watch Netflix, I would surf and my wife would do her coupon spreadsheets (yes she is one of those ladies and we do have a stockpile).
Fast forward to the ICS update. We got the OTA update and for some reason there is an issue with the kernel and people are getting random reboots. I am not sure if it is just me knowing what I am doing from so many tweaks with this phone and past ones or I just got a good tablet, but I messed with the governors and it has been 3 weeks since upgrade and I haven't had one yet. Knowledge is Power. Felt you should be aware of that though. Battery life on ICS is outstanding. I get 4-6 days out of it easily. Might cut it down now that baseball spring training has started and I can stream live video to it.
Conclusion- A few things. The Transformer (tf101) is just as good as the Prime (tf201) and actually I think it is better b/c the Prime has wifi, GPS and other hardward issues, but its bootloader can be unlocked whereas the tf101 is still lock for now. Another things is that you have to remember that these are seconday devices to most people and some of the redundant questions you see are rediculous.
My suggestion is to lurk in the Acer, Transformer, Galaxy, Xoom forums and see what is going on in them. Plus there are a bunch of smaller tablets coming out soon with Tegra3, Quad-core, low price,...
HTH and let me know if you have any Q's and sorry for the long post.
what do you want to do with this tablet?

Ill be using the tablet for school mostly. Ill have about 100 lbs of books that id rather not have to carry with me everywhere. Ill also be using the tablet for light gaming just to keep me entertained from time to time as well as serving to replace my laptop for day to day tasks. Granted i know not everything can be accomplished by a tablet so ill still have my laptop at my apartment but need something light and portable but capable so i was thinking tablet.
As far as no apple products, they seem to hate me, i touch one and they seem to break they dont function properly and im honestly not convinced that they are the best product on the market. Their Marketing department tries to convince you of that but i hardly agree. (i wont get into it i don't want this to turn into a flame thread) regardless thank you for your input.
Ive been looking alot at the Transformer and TF Prime as well as the 10.1 inch samsung variants, but since i have ICS running on my Vibrant id very much like to have it running on my Tablet, i intend to run stock for a while until stable versions of either CM9 or AOKP are released for the device since i will be using it in a more productive than leisurely role.
@ woodrube thank you for the length of your post i appreciate the time you put into your response
@junglerumble thank you for your input, tho i whole heartily disagree with you (to each their own)

I used several different Android Honeycomb tablets, but gave up on all of them because I felt the software weren't advance enough for my purposes, so I got a Windows tablet instead. Then sold that and got the Galaxy Note (international version) which I think is the best consumer portable device made so far, since it acts as a phone and tablet, has the same resolution as the tablets (1280x800, and is even (much) faster than Tegra2, yet pocketable, has Wacom pen, can make phone calls and ultra fast GPS locking, awesome camera), although I didn't keep it since it doesn't support T-Mobile 3G.
Out of the Honeycomb tablets, I liked the Acer A500 and Toshiba Thrive most since it has fullsize USB connector, which works with flash drive and gamepads. I think the Asus Slider should be better since it has fullsize USB and keyboard as well, just a bit heavier. I do not feel tablets with Tegra2 is fast enough to handle 'higher' bitrates HD contents and MKV videos, although other purposes are fine, regular HD video should be okay. I also feel all Android tablets are overpriced for their present software features, unless at refurb price, if it were Ubuntu or some full fledged linux distro I'd be more interested. Which is why I think Windows 8 tablets will have some success, even though I'm not interested in Windows 8.
+1 OG Transformer. Great device

I want to thank everyone for their responses, after spending some time playing with the devices in store and reading through the developer forums I have decided on getting the TF prime, just seemed to blow everything else outta the water once all the tablets had 100+ apps installed and running live wall papers. Luckily i was able to find one at a local retailer since everywhere else was sold out.
I was so close (money in hand) to buying the Galaxy 10.1 but after reading this I decided on the TF201.
Darn near ever place Ive looked is out of stock though.
addition:
It didn't take much for me to switch. After this phone and its total lack of support, I try to stay clear of anything that has Samsung on it.
Thus far I have to say that my impressions of the tfp are extremely favorable so far I have experienced none of the recorded issues with the tablet save maybe the GPS but I have yet to test it outdoors the stock ics keyboard is far better than I expected on the tablet
I will update more as I have more time and experience with the tablet if so desired

I saw that due to the GPS issues they no longer advertise the tab has a GPS. Imagine if Samsung was forced to do the same for our phone's crummy GPS.
Id expect similar GPS to our phones. I ended up buying a real nice Tom-Tom GPS for my car so the phone GPS is bout always off now.

If and when it comes time to Root your device (I did it within 30mins of having it) You can use ViperMod and install Supercurio's OTA Rootkeeper and any updates you get, just open the Rootkeeper up and restore root. Handy little app if I do say so.
I recently purchased a Transformer Prime with the keyboard doc and I have no regrets. It's awsome. I've not experienced any of the GPS/hardware issues mentioned either.

I got home and continued to get some new apps installed and had a browse using pulse. I ventured into my lounge, where the lights were a little brighter. I was about to turn the TV on and heard a buzzing noise.
FANTASTIC.
Google are sending me another...
I then made the mistake of updating FB saying its broken already. I should have just posted: APPLE FANBOYS, MAN/ANDROID DOWN, COME GET ME NOW WHILST I'M WEAK.
"Buy cheap, buy twice" That was possibly the best of the bunch.
It wasn't cheap?! haha, ah well.
After owning this for a day, i'm not that fussed about it breaking to be honest, its a minor fault and they sending me a new one. The main annoyance is people/idiots asking me why I didn't just buy an iPad?!
I cannot believe technology has such a divide, a tablet is a tablet, people don't have the same kind of hate for Nike if they are into Adidas, it really has become very sad.
Joined XDA today after using the site for some time and getting my old HTC tricked out. I won't go into too much detail now but I'm EXTREMELY happy with my new Nexus 4 and very happy I can sell my One X now.
Hello all!
Unlucky. Got mine today and it's fine!

Asus are no where near perfect either.. Google Nexus 7 screen lift or Neuxs 7 screen separation.
Nobody is perfect. Both my Nexus 10 and ASUS TF300T are excellent devices. If I held both under a microscope I could find something to complain about.
Everthing today is price, time to market and the stock price. Are you surprised things are not perfect?
Still Charged Up
I'd take Samsung over Asus any day of the week.

This... unless you've tried a modern Asus tablet (possibly non-Nexus since the 7 sounds alright) you dont understand just how bad they can be. They cut corners in all the wrong places, and once you notice them you cant unnotice them.
Sorry that happened to you. Fortunately, many of us can say from experience that the good ones are really good. Far better than those Apple tablets that people seem to be mindlessly swooning over.
I swear to God I am so sick and tired of the same damn question "why didnt you get an iPad, it clearly has way more apps and blah blah blah". Because i dont wanna be paying to do everything on it, thats why.
O well, mine came a few weeks ago and it had a couple of random reboots, but im fine with it as it has no light bleed and it hasnt rebooted it self for a week or over now.

I'm guessing some of you guys never used a Asus tablet. I had the infinity. It was a beautiful tablet but boy does Asus know how to ruin a great device. Everything Asus makes has i/o issues. So when your downloading something you tablet is pretty much unusable. I never sold anything faster then that thing. Then after going to forums on any of there devices they all have the same problem. Lol even their computers.

I have a tf201 and got so sick of it I got a N10. I did like the keyboard, but there were just too many other little things that I could never get to work right. This after 3 rma's for wireless GPS and other issues . I have had this for 4 days and so far I really like it. I am still trying to get everything setup and figured out.
I think, what many people have trouble with is in how they use it. I don't really play games, but I do use it for productivity purposes and I'm reading a lot of books on Kindle or Google Books. What I found disappointing on the TF 201 was that I couldn't use it very well to write on the screen to take notes, which was a big frustration for me, as I don't want to have to type things out. The tests with my stylus on this has been a little better (using my jot pro) .
I think I also like the screen much better over the TF 201 which was a low resolution, something that I feel awful cheated on, because they came out with the tf700 so quickly afterwards with the same hardware except for the screen.

I have the Infinity 700t using the stock rom, unrooted. With the latest JB firmware update, there is minimal lag. Yesterday I downloaded 3 gb of files (The Bard's Tale) and was able to browse and do other tasks. Overall performance, including browsing is good- not spectacular, but highly usable and reasonably fast. Other than using Boat Browser, routinely clearing browser cache, occasional cold booting and disabling a lot of the pre-installed apps- I have made no system changes. Also, I uninstalled the FB client. Mostly because I find it a very poorly developed piece of software- actually preferring the web version.
