Please Help New to Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, my name is Bryan and im new here. Hopefully I haven't broken any rules as I post this thread, but my friens told me about XDA and said that you guys here could help
I finally upgrade my Sprint account to the Motorola Xprt. Whether you like it or not, its a huge difference from the HTC Snap running on Windows that I had. Ok, so I am having a hard time tying to figure out a few things and thought I would ask the community and see whats the outcome.
First, a few of the key things I like and had with the HTC is the ability to use my personal sounds files for my Text messages, incoming email, power low, new voice mail, etc. I cannot figure out how to do this. It took me about a week to figure out the "adding a folder named ringtone" trick to my Micro SD card so I can access them separately from my mp3 music. Any ideas as to how I can change the tunes to my own?
Second, the Alarm really is very low when it plays, if I am streaming music or playing mp3's, it doesn't play the sound files that I want, but a default one instead. This is critical in my line of work as a driver, I need a cat nap every now and then, and I like to stream music when I nap, so its imperative that I can get a louder alarm clock that enables me to play my own files.
Third, On the old Windows platform, when someone called me and I missed the call, it would be right one the screen in list form, one missed call and Voice mail. On this phone, I have to tap and drag the small top part of the screen to view my missed calls. Is there a way to have it as a list instead?
Fourth, On the HTC Snap, I used TCPMP to stream music from different websites. The cool thing about it is that I was able to add my own personal music files and playlists. That way as i am driving down the road, if I lost connection, it would bounce to the next line and play stored music until I got into a service area again and I would simply just click on the websites link again. Is there a software out there that will let me do this?
Fifth, Google Voice prefix's. again on the Snap, I had my Google voice set up on phone and my contacts had the prefixes on them as well. When I switch phones, I logged into Gmail, and followed the steps to move over my contacts. Ever thing went fine. The only problem is that this phone is so much faster than the Windows, that it speeds right through all the numbers and commas before the female Google voice has a chance to say anything. Is there a fix to this? Here below is the way its set up on my old phone. when I call Airtran to check a flight during peak hours, its prestored into the contact as this Airtran
my gmail number,,password,2,8002478726# So is the solution to simply add a ton of commas to make it slower? Or is there a real fix for it?
Appreciate any and all help..
Bryan

First, try putting these folders on your sd card and filling them with whatever goodies you like
/media/audio/notifications/
and
/media/audio/ringtones/
Second, find an alarm app in the market that you like. Keep trying until you find one you like. If you have a crappy speaker then you are SOL or maybe an app like volume+ would help.
Third, for the voicemail thing it sounds like you would like a widget. Try the market again. If its the dialer you don't like look for the app dialer one or the google voice app.
Fourth, google voice maybe.
Fifth, good luck.
have you installed the correct drivers on your computer for this phone?

ok, I will try the folder thing. What drivers are you talking about? This is the first Android phone I owned. I didn't know I needed to download anything..
Bryan

Your computer sees your phone as a piece of hardware. Just like when have a printer you have to install the drivers before you can print. just do a search for motorola xprt drivers.

I tried the folder thing you suggested and it did not work. After bouncing around the internet, I found a thread that said to have a folder called "notifications" on the SC card and put the files in there. That's what I did and I got the Text Message and Email tones to work the way I want to. My next Q is how to do this for the New Voice Mail. In text and email, I had to go to my texts and email, and then settings, then notifications, and then select the tones of my choice. Where do I do that with the Voice mail? I don"t see the setting for voice mail at all..

this is an android thing, though you still should be able to see little icons up the top of your screen when you get a missed call, right?
Ice Cream Sandwich has a solution for this, but that's not available for your phone, so there should be an app that can do that.
Your looking for a 'lockscreen' app. The ring app that was mentioned above is one such app
AANNDD.. I'm not sure whether you asked this or not, but I figured I would answer anyway
to make your device be seen by your computer, you need to install the Android USB driver, which is included in the Android SDK.
alternatively you can search XDA for the 'Android USB Driver', someone will have uploaded it, but it's most definitely what's going to help your computer see your android device

Custom notification sounds

Just got my Hero and I am loving it!
But how do I use my own MP3's as ringtones and notifications?
I keep answering these Q's on the basis that I'm pretty sure the Hero will behave like The Magic as its the closest cousin and also runs Android 1.5 so
Try this - on the root of your SD card you need to make a folder structure the same as on the device itself. Media folder with Audio folder inside. Audio folder with alarms, notifications and ringtones inside.
Media/Audio/alarms
Media/Audio/notifications
Media/Audio/ringtones
and put files you want to use for each of those in there and they *should* then show in the list that comes up for those functions.
I think mp3 are fine for all of those, but alarm and notification seem to be mostly .ogg files so if you have an easy converter, might be worth converting. I think I converted the main one I use for my alarm to ogg using WMP11
And having said all that, simply long holding on a music file will usually allow you to set it as a ringtone, wherever you store it on your SD.

you are our guru
thats for the info in the threads dazee
we are all learning again with the hero
Hey, cool to feel like an expert for a bit til the wizz kids take over. I'm killing time waiting for my Hero....
Actually, you can find most of these answers in the Sapphire forums or Dream forums as they are mostly Android 1.5 questions rather than device specific. Perhaps the mods should have an Android Forum since loads of stuff is duplicated and triplicated between the three android devices....
and that's only my hundredth post - so really, I'm the noob... LOL
Thanks for the help, but it's not working for me.
I have created Media\Audio\notifications as you suggested and put an MP3 in there, but I dont see it in my notification sounds list.
In what specific way am I being thick!?
For short stuff like alarms and notifications, they might need to be .ogg so you may need to convert for them to show up.
LOL You are a pioneer since most of us don't have a Hero device to try anything as yet
In my settings for the magic I also have a choice in Sound and display to check Sd Card Notifications, and I'm not sure if that's what is needed - and of course - I have a magic not a Hero so it could be totally different...
Right, I got it working. Possibly by enabling those SD Card notifications. I did restart the phone as well. Either way, its working!
Thank you for your efforts in helping!
Oooh restart rings a bell, actually - I recall that possibly was something I had to do on the Magic before the files appeared in the lists!!
Cool. Nice Teamwork If this keeps up I'll have solved all my own potential probs before I even get my Hero
Also confirmed ...
a combination of enabling SD notifications (off by default) creating folder structure exactly as it appears ( case sensitive) and transferring files over and a reboot for good measure - these now appear in ringtone and more importantly under notifications.
filetypes tested - mp3, wav and ogg - all appeared.
Thanks for the advice !
I found that just creating a /notifications folder on the SD card worked fine. Didn't need to reboot or anything.

Search for RingDroid in the Market. It finds all youre mp3's on the sd-card. Then you can open youre fav mp3, shorten it and save it and make it youre ringtone or notification tone
So, another little question, specific to HTC Mail app. Is it possible to change the notification sound for HTC Mail specifically? I havent found a way yet.

The Jones - I believe the HTC mail app uses the default Android notification tone you set in the usual place.

Hmm, thanks for confirming that. Shame, slightly annoying actually, I want a different sound for incoming work emails. The sound of me not reading them usually!!
I agree that it is odd not to be able to select a custom notification for the HTC email app. In fact all notification events should be grouped together somewhere for control and customisation.
Plenty scope for improvement in that area though.
speaking of sounds, my alarm is horribly low volume, even though i set both ringer and notification sounds to max....ahm, what am i missing?
huh, 2-3h later discovered that when picking out alarm sound, volume rocker is used to set alarm volume....kinda silly to hide it like that :/
I'm really missing a notifications app in general that will allow me to choose loits of different things like colour of light, tune/tone etc for various functions.
There's an app called Missed Call that allows you to choose colour for SMS flashing notification and for missed calls and I think bluetooth but not much else.
Would be FABULOUS to set a few personal contacts to have their own indicator colour

[Q] Thunderbolt doesn't recognize phone numbers on the internet

I moved to the Thunderbolt from the OG Droid. One thing that I loved about the Droid, as I assume on most android phones, is that when I would tap on a phone number in an email or on a website, it would bring up the dialer and make the call. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get this to work on the Thunderbolt, whether it is a tap or a long press.
Is this the same for everyone? Is there anything that can be done?
Doitall76
I think it will bring up the number, just switch to your phone after u click it and it should b up on the dialer.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
What browser are you using?
Sometimes it wont recognize a phone number because of the format its in I believe.
I've noticed that if i search for a place in the browser (not maps) and the search results come up with a phone number (a blue button on the page), if I click the phone number it will load up my dialer.... but without the number.
Once again, I have to say I don't think anyone actually tests the software in a real-world scenario... but maybe its just my frustrations getting the best of me. (Relax, though. I still love the phone..)

I am using the default HTC browser, but this occurs in the mail and gmail programs as well.
With my Droid, if there was a string of 10 numbers in the header "subject" area of the message, I could just click it and it would dial.
My office voice mails come through my email, this is where it comes into play and I am missing that functionality. Now I have to memorize the number or write it down to go to the dialer and manually dial it. It's just not as fluid as it was.

This didn't seem right to my experience, so I go google lowes phone number in the stock browser pick first result. It was not blue boxed, when I clicked on it I get the option to COPY|CALL|SMS|SAVE TO (contacts)
So I figure I maybe got lucky... I scroll down until I see a number in one of the replies in the comments section... same thing, no issue.
I have also gotten the blue box in the past, don't know what the special circumstance is.
Edit - Just tried it on another site and one came up blue boxed like and one didn't recognize a phone number as a phone number on a different section of the page. Interesting.

I just had lunch with someone who moved from a Motorola Cliq, to an HTC Shift, and she has the same issue. I don't know if it is that Motorola's phone are just working a little better in this arena, or if there is something wrong with these two HTC phone models.
This would be easier to deal with (not that it bothers me much) if there was just an easy way to past a copied phone number in the dialer. Am I missing something?

Is Texting possible?

I have noticed some of you appear to be answering posts from your Gtab and have the XDA app signature.
How can I send txt msgs from a NON Rooted Gtab? Is it even possible and what app would I need to do so. I use Handcent on my EVO and love the app but it doesn't seem to send txts from the Gtab.
Any help would be appreicated and Thanks in advance.

Google voice question
I saw this post and squeezed in some time to set up google voice. It did work in that I could send texts but I'm not sure what is happening. Is google using my droid x phone's text account - that is am I eating into my monthly texting amount with Verizon when I text from the g-tab? I tried calling my google voice number and my cell phone rang. I didn't answer it but left myself a voicemail. Interestingly enough, Google voice converted it to text and sent it to my gtab. When I send a text from my g-tab I get a copy on my droid x. I tried looking for additional configuration settings on the google voice website when I was signed in but if they are there then they are well hidden. I'm sure that with enough futzing around I'll find the right settings and being able to send and receive texts from the g-tab is awesome but I sure would like to know exactly how Google is playing with my cell phone. I don't think you can set it up without a valid phone number to verify with so you have to give them your real phone number. Experienced users - please chime in.
Wasn't hard at all, just DL it from the market. Make sure to load the Settings also.
It will then guide you through the setup which is really easy.
However, I have decided to remove it from use because it disconnected Handcent from my phone and I really like Handcent with all its features much better and since Iwill do very little txting from my Gtab and do most all my txting while mobile with my EVO, I see no real need for txting on the Gtab.
I will continue to search for another way to txt from the Gtab as long as it doesnt interfer with Handcent on my phone.

Square 1, as you can see by my last post, I wasn't happy with the Google Voice situation so I will ask you if using Sync sms will cause me problems as well. Since I would be paying for this app, I'd like to know if you know any downside to it. As I stated, I really like Handcent on my phone and I would like to continue using it. Will Sync sms interfere with it on my phone to your knowledge? Any light you or anyone else can shed would be appreicated. Also, can you send me the market link for this app please. I am having trouble locating a market that will allow me to DL to my Gtab.
Thanks again

The only thing with syncsms is that sometimes it takes a minute or two for the text to be received on the other end. The outgoing texts will show up in handcent just like you sent them from the phone. (that is actually what the app is doing, so yeah, it uses your phone texts from your plan (if not unlimited.

@ dig'em,
Do you have any idea where I can DL Syncsms to my Gtab? All the markets I have on the Gtab either will not let me DL or they say I already have DL'd it to my EVO and instruct me to pick another device. When I attempt to pick another device, either it won't let me make the selection or if it does, and I hit install, nothing happens on the Gtab.
I have it DL'd on my EVO and its running in the background. I have also noticed it placed two new folders on my DropBox, sms_out & sms-in. Searching my EVO with ES Explorer but I can't seem to find the .apk so I can copy over to my Gtab. I have also sent emails to the Developer which he responded to very quickly, but my last email to him hasn't been answered. In that email, I told him what I just said above and asked if there is a place where I can DL the .apk. Even sent him proof of purchase.
Can anyone assist me?

[APP] TexTab [Updated: Released to Market!]

Update: TexTab has been released in the market! Thanks to everyone who participated in the beta. Download links:
- Full Version
- Lite Version
TexTab is an SMS app for Android tablets. It allows you to connect your Android 2.1+ tablet to your Android 2.1+ phone over Bluetooth and send/receive SMS messages on your tablet as if you were sending them from your phone.
I've been working on this app for some time now and I feel that it is ready for public beta testing. I encourage everybody to download and install the app on both your phone and tablet, and please provide feedback here.
App Features:
- Honeycomb optimized, though not required
- Push menu button to connect devices via bluetooth, with option to select a device to automatically connect to in settings
- Conversation threads use your Google contact information to display contact info
- Widget with button to enable/disable service, and displays connection information
Known Bugs:
- Messages not saving to outbox on some devices
- Sometimes unable to connect from one device. Seems to fix after turning bluetooth off then on, on OTHER device.
- Delivery reports are not always reliable, when messages are sent or received very quickly
- Visual issues/ghosting when using Swype keyboard in portrait orientation
- Performance issues on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"
Future Development/Requested Features:
- New layout for 7" tablets
- Wifi functionality for increased range
- UI improvements
- Option to sync contacts with phone rather than cloud
- Sync sms history with phone
- Option to mute phone notifications
- Mark incoming messages as "read" on phone
- Popup dialog on received message when app is not in foreground
- MMS support
- Ability to use existing SMS app (GoSMS, Handcent, etc) to send/receive messages on ANOTHER phone
- suggestions?
Installation and Use:
Download the attached zip file and extract it somewhere on your computer. Copy the extracted file, TexTab.apk, onto both of your devices. Find the .apk file using File Manager or your favourite file browser and run it on both devices to install. Once installed, you can access it like any other app, and you can long-press on the homescreen to add the widget.
Once in the app, push the menu button to connect to a paired bluetooth device. If your devices are not paired, simply make one of them discoverable using Menu Button > Make Discoverable and then on the other device use Menu Button > Connect a Device > Scan for Devices to pair the two devices and establish a connection.
Once a connection is established, the devices should show their proper views. If not, click the settings button and change the Device Type. Under settings, you can also select the option to automatically connect to a paired device on startup. You can also enable or disable the bluetooth service under settings, or by using the button on the widget.
To send a message, either type a phone number into the Phone Number... field, or tap the Send To... button to choose a contact from the cloud. Type the message in the Enter a Message... field and tap send. Received messages will automatically show up as long as the app is enabled.
I look forward to any feedback/bug reports/praise/insults you may have!
Changelog:
See attached text file
This sounds awesome! Thanks a lot man.
Could you maybe throw up some instructions for everyone...
Edit: works great so far. Looking foward to the updates!
I updated the OP with installation and usage instructions. Let me know if they're not clear!
Cant wait to give this a try! Awesome
Will deffinately try this, sounds like what I've been looking for!
You say Future Development for WiFi, 2 ways I could suggest to have that.
1) If the tab is tethered to the phone for data (this is how I get my WiFi only tab to have data at work)
2) If they are on the same WiFi network, say I'm at home. Phone is connected to home WiFi and tab is connected to home WiFi.
Just some thoughts
*Edit*
Ok, tried it out and thats pretty cool! I like how the message shows up on the phone and the tab. Is there a way to pull down recient conversations (say from the last 24 hours) incase you wanted to continue a previous conversation? Also, if read on the tab or phone, could it show read on the other device?

This is exactly how the wifi support will work. It will still require the connect to device step, but the range will be limited by your wifi network rather than your phones bluetooth signal.

I've toyed with the idea of syncing sms history with a contact, unfortunately though any operations which involve using sms history are unsupported in the Android SDK and could break my app in the future. Marking a message as read is subject to the same problem. I'll look into it some more.
I appreciate the feedback, keep it coming!
I wanna suggest something, look at the app called texter, and the chrome app, then take a look have they work. They work by signing in on your google account on an app on the android phone, and the signing in at the same account on chrome, npw you can sms from chrome throw your phone and recive them, no matter where your phone is, it just need 3g connetion. This is like chrometophone. If you could get it working in this way it would be awsome! And the ofc still the bluetooth or something other when the tab not have internet connection
Loving this app so far, just wanted to report a bug. When a new contact sends a text, it seems to duplicate the view of prior conversations. I have one conversation that's up to three alternate views!
Edit: After a reboot, the duplicates disappeared.

When a new contact sends a text, it seems to duplicate the view of prior conversations. I have one conversation that's up to three alternate views!

Thanks, added it to the list. As a temporary fix, tapping the settings button and then tapping back will reload the contacts list and they should disappear.
Also I can't seem to delete conversations by long pressing. Is there another way?
I haven't implemented this. I'll consider it a feature suggestion! Are you wanting to delete specific messages within a thread, or whole thread for a contact?
I was actually working on something exactly like this. I did not end up getting much work done though. If you would like any help, just let me know.
Dude, your App is awesome ! ive searched for days for something like this. the only other option is syncsms and that one doesnt support "push", only "all 5 min sync". But your solution via bluetooth is just awesome
ive allready installed it on 5 different transformers for my friends. we are all very happy and would like to donate for your work.
As soon as your App is final, you should totaly put it on market for 1-2$ or more. you will be rich buddy !
Greetings from Germany, keep up the good work. ive allready bookmarked your thread =)
PS: Could you implement the function to mute the notification sound?

I won't name any names, but there is at least one other implementation of this idea. My app goes about it a little bit differently.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. It will eventually be a paid app on the market, but not until I feel its complete enough to justify charging money.

Just a contact thread. Specific messages would be a good option if you want this to be a full fledged texting app, but then the deletion wouldn't propogate to the phone without some magic. If this app is intended to be a messenger though, an extension of the phone when the tablet just so happens to be around, I'd like the ability to keep that interface clean and current so its not bogged down with out of date texts.
Edit: Keeping with the 'extension of the phone' idea, you could have an option to clear the text database after a certain amount of time disconnected from a device.
a friend of mine just told me that his phone is acting wierd.
he installed the app and send me 5 texts over his pad and i got them all. but his phone wont show what he wrote and in his phone there are only the sms from me and not his. we both use the lg optimus 2x.
and also his phone send 2 sms to the number "555555555" with text "default body". right after he installed the app and tried to send texts over his pad.
any idea?

I have an idea about what's happening here. As I mentioned in an earlier post, any operations that involve your phones SMS history are unsupported in the Android SDK. It sounds like your particular phone model doesn't access SMS history in the same way as other phones, so the app is unable to save sent messages in your phones SMS history.
The number "5555555555" and "default body" are used when there is a problem saving the data to your phone. The phone was told that a message was sent to that number; but no SMS was actually sent.
I'll try and find a workaround for this phone.
Do other people using this phone model have the same problem? Or any other LG phone?
No one else have that issue.
we both use the same lg and we both use a modaco rom. the only difference is, iam using modaco version ~16 and he version ~19. so the problem should lie in the difference of that roms. he just got furios because he tought the app had send 2 sms to a pricy number...
after reading your explanation we saw that everytime he sends a text to me he got a 55555555 sms with default body, so its realy the fact that his phone cant save the textmessage into the threaded sms history. its send, but not saved. on the other hand it flawlessly work on my phone. i can send a text on my pad and see it almost directly on my phone in the threaded history. funny tho =) now we're gonna flash his phone to another rom.
i'll keep an eye on this thread. it would be realy cool if you would mention it somewhere when u think u found a workarround. we will test it then =)
ah and we found another bug just now. when i want to write a new sms to contactB i have no choice to choose the number to send. so my girlfriend for example have 3 different numbers, and the app want to use the first number of the contact, in this situation its her home number.. no way to send a sms to that one ^^

Thanks for the clarification. It must be an incompatibility with the rom then.
I'll repeat for clarity: when you see a message to the number "5555555555" its simply a problem with the phone not saving the information properly. An SMS has NOT been sent to this number.
Please let me know if flashing a different rom fixes the problem!

eris as mp3 player

I am looking to turn my eris into a pure mp3 player for my daughter. she uses it now for that reason, but it doesn't need the dialer, phone book or anything else like that on it. to me its just wasted space. i am open to suggestions. is there a rom out there that i can use that will do this? i have searched and found nothing.
I'm not 100% sure you can remove phone and dialer stuff without getting force closes on that process. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure those can't be removed.

this might be what you're looking for...?

you don't need to remove the dialer, contacts, phone .apk's, but with most launchers giving the option to hide certain programs, you could hide them and those apps would only be accessible when going into Titanium Backup or Manage Apps within the settings. at least that's what i did, just in case i need to activate the old eris in an emergency and need the phone functionality, since all phones can make 911 emergency calls even after deactivation.
EDIT: just happened to be browsing that thread, and saw a few posts from you, so maybe this is old news to you! lol, anyway, hope this helps if not, cheers!
Ya know removing the dialer and stuff wouldn't help you free space anyway because that is stored on the system and your mp3s are on the SD card.

That works perfectly, thank you very much. and you guys are all correct on the removal of the phone book and dialer. and everything is already on the sd card, i was just trying to clean / speed things up a bit. i appreciate the response from everyone.
I've been wanting the same thing. But I've decided to make it a home phone that is relatively always plugged in and use sipdroid to set it for inbound and outbound calls. I occasionally use it as an example mp3 player. I may try breaking the ROM apart, but honestly just use a startup disabling app like systemtuner productos or autostarts.. That can literally disable everything from turning on at boot. And other trigger points. Freezing sometimes breaks the ROM depending on what it is.
Sent from my android touchpad.
I've been asking if workshed wants to make one last ROM for the Eris which encorporates that script into it as well as removing every system app not necessary to making it a wifi enabled music player, but he seems to be busy with his other ROM development. I think I'll be making a thread about it, that way if a dev is interested in making it, they can take it from there. Sort of a dev-shopping thread. I've been meaning to for a little while.
