Screen bleed newbie? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

What does screen bleed look like? I got my new C3 serial model and I see white coming out on the sides when the screens all black? Please don't tell me that's it on my 2nd friggin prime!!!

Yup, thats bleed.
Since you have a C3, have you tested your Wifi/BT speeds at the same time? Just curious how yours is performing.

I haven't tested **** yet because I finally got it updated to 21. I'm so pissed. I can't believe I have to send yet another prime back. Are u ****ing kidding me

Is it really bad? Possible to take a pic for us?
Mine has some along the right side but since everything else works on mine cept GPS I live with it.. C3's are supposed to be good batch but looks like they're like the others as well..

Mostly on the right side.

Once you posted these pics, I had a look at mine too. I too have a screen bleed ( I think two of them) on the right end of the screen. Now I can nitpick, rant and rave and all as much as I want, saying that I payed $500 of my hard earned cash that it better work 100% well. But guess what, its been a month since I got my device and so far I have never, ever noticed this. I watched a couple of movies too, but never noticed it. So, though technically there may be some flaws in my device, for all practical purposes it is unnoticeable and okay. I believe screen bleed is due to the screen being screwed a bit too tightly, so it is technically not a hardware issue, it is just a slight fitting issue which can be fixed if you open your device and tinker.
Similarly, my prime has 2 bright pixels (dead pixels that is). Still, I have never been bothered by it. Now, I may obsess about the screen bleed for a few days (because I just discovered a new "defect" in my prime thanks to you! nah, I'm joking, it's cool! ) but still I'm not gonna notice it.
Now your screen bleed seems benign too! If you notice it often, return it else keep it! As simple as that, bro!
\m/ Btw, my prime is a C1... Peace!

Sorry to see that man, that definitely looks worse than mine..and with a C3 you def got a right to be upset

You know, I lurk on ipad forums a lot. There's no question that almost all if not all ipads out there have back light bleed to some degree. And yet, ipad users don't really care about it since most people don't notice it until someone else points it out to them.
And yet on this side of the fence android users would cry bloody murder and make it out like it's the end of the world just because in a completely dark room with a device that is showing a completely black picture you can see some light coming from the corners.
For those who think backlight bleed is the end of the world, please do us all a favor and get a normal lcd display tablet. Or go get the ipad.

90% of all LCDs have some form of screen bleed. TVs, Laptops, LCD monitors, iPads, etc. The reality is that it is just a consequence of the technology.
Unless you have incredibly prominent screen bleed that is distracting when the screen is not all black, or distracting enough to notice while watching dark movies, I wouldn't worry about it much.
From the photos you posted I don't think you have much to complain about.

I have an ipad2 and the new ipad with no lightbleeds. But the early primes I bought 3 of the 5 primes had definite light bleeds on more that 1 area and 1 had dead pixels. This is from my experience. Maybe I just have the worst luck with the prime like a few of the members here.

I have a tf101 32gig model and just bought a prime. It's got absolutely no light bleed whatsoever. It locks onto the gps in about 30 seconds and always sees at least 8 sats, sometimes 10-12, at any given time. Neither my transformers have any light bleed at all. My 16gig model did have some light bleed, though. Last year, I bought an ipad and ipad 2 and they both got light bleeds.
There have been plenty of articles regarding light bleeds on the ipads and that chances are if you got light bleed and want to exchange for another you will get another with light bleed.
All ips display devices are prone to backlight bleeds. Most people don't care about it because it's hardly noticable. Only a few people like yourself think it's the end of the world.

You got me LOL.
I am now officially a proud owner of a prime with a fully working gps, strong as hell wifi signal, and no back light bleed whatsoever. Can't wait for the dock to arrive.

yeah my wifi works too and my gps is fine for the most part, was on my first unit too - this unit has a tiny bleed but it's barely worth mentioning compared to the amount of bleeds the tf101 had. Alot of people around here really can't appreciate how much better this tablet is over the original transformer.

Do you really notice that bleeding with normal use? Mine had this:
Which really has those bright spots, but this seems pretty gentle, however it shouldn't be there..

That screen bleed from the op doesnt look bad at all...
Room looks pitch black, and thats all you see. I can guarantee you can't see that during normal operation.

Op: your screen bleed actually is not that bad. I would not take another chance sending it back because you might get worse.
It took me 3 times before I got one that was tolerable. But then I opened my prime and fixed it by loosening some screws.

[Tips] Minor Defects to Check For Before Leaving Store or Before Your 30 Days Expire

If you are viewing this thread, hopefully you haven't bought the Evo 3d just yet or are still within your 30 days. I just wanted to share my experiences with the Evo 3D to help others avoid the headaches I have had with a few visual defects on some Evo 3d's and also an operational defect. I would recommend inspecting the phone for these things before you leave or before you'll be outside your 30 days and offered a refurb. I made the mistake of not looking things over at the store, and it took me 2 replacements to finally get a phone that didn't have these defects.
Please Note: I'm a very picky person, so I always check my new phones for defects and eye sores before I get to the point where I am unable to resolve the issue within 30 days. Some of the things that I have an issue with may not be a big deal for others. Many people are happy with their phone even with a minor defect, but I feel if it's brand new it should be the same quality as a brand new phone.
If your opinion differs on what matters and what doesn't, don't bother trying to debate. The purpose for this post is to help others spot minor defects that may be an eye sore for them personally.
Pin Hole Size White Dot near Capacitive Buttons
-While this may not be a big deal to some, I found it a rather annoying eye sore while using your phone in a dark room or when your bottom buttons are lit up.
-This shouldn't be too hard to spot, just make sure that your buttons are lit up. Usually you will have to cover the sensor along the top of the phone if you are not in a dark room to get the buttons to light up. See picture below for example.

Dead Pixel's on Screen
-Once again just a minor defect that is common on LCD screens, but if you are watching a movie it can become rather noticeable.
-The easiest way I found to check for this is to install "Dead Pixel Test" from the market. This app will go through several solid color screens which will help you spot a dead pixel if there are any.
Power/Sleep Button Activates with a Minor Touch
-Could be a possible issue if the phone is in your pocked and button is activated, your phone may turn off and you wouldn't even know it.
-The button should have somewhat of a click to it when your press it. Try gently putting your finger on the button without much pressure, and see if the screen turns on/off.
Dust Particles Under Screen or Glass Covering Camera's
-May cause pictures to appear fuzzy if you have dust under the glass, and well the screen that's self explanatory.
-Could be difficult to spot, just look from multiple angles to spot any dust.
Red Trim That Surrounds Camera Glass is Lose [Reported by: mayfield103]
-Only have seen this mentioned a few times, but could be a big eyesore if it comes out. I would guess that this issue stems from the rear cover on the phone not being taken off carefully but check anyways.
3D/2D Toggle Button is Wobbly or Lose (Fairly Common Issue) [Reported by:dirkyd3rk and a few others]
-This is more so just annoying when the phone vibrates so does the button itself. Could be a problem in the future though if the button actually pops off from being slid back and forth a number of times.
-Easiest way to check for this would be to just slide the toggle, if it has give before fully locking into 3D or 2D then the button is probably faulty. You may get weird looks for this but if you shake the phone you can also hear it as well.
Screen is Slightly Tilted to Either Side [Reported by: DeMiNeO]
-"It's almost unnoticable if your not looking at it, but then drives you mad once you find it".
The Infamous "Light Bleed" Along Bottom and Slightly Up Sides of the Screen
-This has been reported and debated by quite a few people. Some say its light bleed, while others say the Capacitive buttons are just too bright. This just appears as a slight glow between the side of the screen and the frame of the phone along the bottom. Those who had the OG Evo know exactly what this looks like.
-If you have access to a decently dark room this shouldn't be hard to spot, wake the screen and look along the bottom edge of the screen.
Picture borrowed from: itsallsubliminal
-"You can see if it effects you easily by looking at the upper right corner of your phone. If it looks tilted, you have the issue".
These issues seem to be isolated, so don't let this sway you from buying the phone. I am very satisfied with my phone I just wanted to provide a thread for such issues.
Hopefully this will help some people out and prevent multiple trips to the Sprint store for a replacement. As I said before, some may not care about these issues but if you notice the little things I would recommend checking for these defects. If I missed something else just post the issue and I will edit the OP.
Excellent tips thank you. I'm very picky also. I'm getting mine July 4th.

No problem, most of these have been posted already in different places but just figured one thread would be a little easier to find instead of doing all the digging.
Only thing I noticed on mine is that dot u pointed out its a cosmetic thing not a defect more like a ant tit of a spot can't see it unless u rape your phone with your eyeball other that my phone zero issues no problem with pixles or leakinglight which people claim they have its not leaking just bright ass buttons .
2d3d button wobble slightly no issue no yellow tint either . I'm not picky unless you get white spots like the EVO had 2 months into the brandnew phone that sucks .
ITT: Why OCD people will get their phones replaced
Awesome! Thanks for posting. Also another thing I have noticed is a minuscule but noticeable small silver chip off the paint on the rim surrounding one of the dual lenses at the back. A couple of phones had it, MAKE SURE YOU verify that yours doesn't have it.

Yea, i got that man. Boy was i mad when i got home because i changed out the original 3D i was going to get because the top of the screen had a bump and the battery cover had some kind of stuff stuck on it. I thought i checked it over good but to my suprise, low and behold that scratch on the rim of the camera lenses a couple hours later when i checked again.

Check to make sure your screen isn't tilted either.
I've seen where some people's screens (And the Sprint Demo evo3d) had the screen tilted to the right a TINY TINY bit. It's almost unnoticable if your not looking at it, but then drives you mad once you find it. You can see if it effects you easily by looking at the upper right corner of your phone. If it looks tilted, you have the issue.

I hear you there, My OG EVO had the white splotch of doom too. It appeared in the lower center of the screen. I didnt know it was a well known defect until 8 months later, or that you could switch it out under the mfg warranty. So this is a good thread to have.
The kind guys at my radioshack swapped my evo 3d that had dirt under the screen in a few places. they didnt even look at me weird. They seemed to understand that I didnt want to look at that for at least one (possibly 2 years).
I Have light bleed when my captive buttons are not lit but my back light is on... my search button still glows from the leak... bothers me late at night when i am in my bed... "researching"
its a good thing you posted this, once I read it I began looking for these little flaws and found a dead pixel. Sprint is overnighting me a new one. Thanks

My EVO 4g had a couple of dead pixels, it was only noticeable when the screen was black. I dealt with it. I didn't want to go through the unrooting and rooting process again or worse...end up with a crappy refurb.

Screen creeky

Not sure if I'm the only one with this issue, but near the ASUS logo, if I push down anywhere in that area, I can fanilty here the screen press down and creek. While this isn't a major issue, I am OCD and if I paid 500 bucks or a device, I expect everything to be functioning normally. It happens in that part of the touch screen only, everything else it like it should.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Doesn't happen with my Prime. I do have some creaking with my Samsung Epic 4G Touch and Motorola Photon smartphones, but my wife doesn't with her Epic 4G Touch. Had some creaking on my Epic 4G. Also have some with my Panasonic camcorder. Don't have any with either of my Zune 80GB media players. A part of the dash on my Infiniti G37 has a tiny bit of give that rattles a little after 14K miles. Have a little bit of creaking in my HP Envy 14 notebook, but my wife's Toshiba M400 Tablet PC doesn't have any. None in my original Transformer, but the Xoom I owned had a little bit.
So, yeah, a little bit of off-tolerance creaking is pretty common in the things I own. Some have it, some don't. So far, I haven't had any that's caused me to want to return any of them, and I've pretty much reserved myself to the fact that unless I'm paying millions of dollars for something, it's possible to have some variance.

Thanks for your input. Depending on where and when you get your prime, it could determine how "up to date" it is, and you can tell how long it has been sitting in its box, etc. If it was a bad model, and it had the latest updates, you can tell it is ether faulty, or something is up when manufacturing.

On the right edge in the middle quarter my screen is slightly loose and creaks as a result , everything else works fine so undecided wether to return.
I probably should on principle but international so would be a hassle and worried that a replacement would be worse with other issues.
To be honest i rarely notice it , its more that i know there is an issue that is annoying.

Then your poll is confusing. It should have been, "What update was your tablet at when you received it?" Because of course, most people have already updated their Primes to the latest version regardless of when they received it.
I'm not sure that this kind of issue is really all that related to when a particular unit is manufactured. Every device, no matter how long it's been on the market, will have occasional lemons produced, not to mention units that are the slightest fraction off-tolerance. In the case of a device like the Prime with such tight tolerances, it's bound to happen.
Maybe the person who did this production step on your unit sneezed at just the wrong moment. Boom, there you go. Creaking. And if this particular pressure point is even checked in QA, either yours wasn't sampled or THAT person got distracted by the hottie that walked by at that particular moment.
Again, these aren't low-volume, multi-million dollar products being made. They're high-volume, low-margin, relatively low-cost products where spending the resources for absolute perfection on every unit is simply cost-prohibitive. We'd be paying $10K for these things to have every single one be absolutely perfect build-wise.
Just venting here, because I think folks get WAY too picky about such things. If something literally doesn't function (like the haptic feedback on one of my Primes), then that's something to complain about. But a tiny difference in fit and finish just seems a bit ticky-tacky to me.

it was a question that you are looking for answers about? Sounds like a Q and A to me.. Renaming it does not change anything.. but you now re worded it.. so I guess its ok..
I got it too on the left part of the screen. It is really annoying, when you accidently tap instead of just touch it clicks.. Gonna return it for another one as I also have some pixels issues and dust on the lens of the front camera. All the units they had at the ASUS Benelux launch party did not have this creaking issue.

A question that opens discussion. If it was a question like, does the Prime have a built in USB port? Answer: No. That would break the rules.

Yep. Left side of my Prime had click/creak. It was extremely annoying when using the tablet in a quiet room. The tablet just didn't feel solid - not like my wife's GT 10.1 or even my cheapy GTablet. I'm really surprised at the "don't be so picky" responses. $500 must be pocket change for some of you guys.
My Prime went back today. I'll pick one up again when/if they get the issues worked out.

Mine has one small area (Black bezel, just to the right of the power connector) that when pushed on seems to go down a little, with a faint creek.
Annoyed me at first, think I've gotten used to it now (Not exactly a place I touch regularly). Would return it, but being in Australia, could take too long to get a replacement.
I forgot that it had international warranty so i will ring service centre in my city and see if i can get it fixed , i would think of all the problems that this device has fixing the screen looseness would be pretty straight forward unless i am missing something. Doing a search found some people who said asus even had courier come and pick it up for them so i will give them a call tomorrow!
I can confirm that I have the same issue in the same area as OP.
Also when I shake the device it sometimes rattles form the inside which seems to be coming from the top right somewhere.
man and i thought am unlucky and have faulty device. Now I see... asus still sucks with their quality control. Shame on them. 500$ ****
Hopefully my exchange wont have the same issue.
I found the source of the rattle noise. It comes from the right hand dock connector.

Prime C3 Model Testing

Just got my 3rd Prime and this would be my second C3 (first I had was C1)
Thankfully there is no lightbleeding and no dead pixels or white-freaking spots.
Wifi is just like before, I haven't tested it from a far distance yet.
Inside I get 65Mbps
GPS is crap as usual, in my balcony it finds 1 satellite but does not lock.
Will try more outside later.
Camera has been good pretty much from the beginning but i feel it could be improved.
I like that you can zoom in 1080p now.
Have had the unit for about 48 hours and it has rebooted 3 times.
Was so ****ing stupid that I did not root before the latest OTA .21
All in all it feels pretty solid and the Prime is awesome, I hope Asus will eventually release firmwares that make full use of the CPU's Full Potential.
Browser is OK, but it crashes every now and then but you can resume your previous windows so that's cool I don'http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=986740&stc=1&d=1333731891t remember this existing before .21
OkI! Just sharing!
Edit: Speed test via Prime,
Edit: April 6, Testing.
Information about Battery Life so far with the C3:
At the moment my battery stats are 19 hours and 11 minutes, and battery time left is 57% (See Image).
My image settings has been at around 70% with IPS+ on sometimes on and off, maybe 20% of the time.
I have downloaded heavy files maybe 3,4 or four of them.
I've watched HD youtube flicks, transfered files to ext.HDD, taken pictures and experimented with the camera functions.
I've done ALOT of surfing.
I have also downloaded and deleted apps, tested Shadowgun, and some other games.
I have skyped quite a bit, I have filmed as well.
I've tried the HDMI out connection.
I have sent and received many emails.
I've switched from Normal to Performance mode many time for testing and for faster browsing or general speed But honestly I dont see much differene). NEED TO ROOT!!!
I have done a lot and am happy with the performance (although it ca be tweaked and the the battery will last less but I don't really care to surf or use my machine for than 5 hours at a time.
My prime has been connected with the Dock but not constantly, I took the Surfpad off the dock at least 4 times.
Im pretty happy so far with my Pime and I am not rooted and running .21
EDIT: I am still not done and the battery is at 35% and i've sending images via dropbox and other ****.

Information about Wi-Fi range so far with the C3:
Wifi is not bad and I have never experienced much problems with it but I decided to do a test anyways, in the picture below you can see a building in which I live on the third floor, and I took it from the ground just outside of the building door entrance. And the wifi was not strong at all haha as you can see in the picture but I was connected and was pretty stable.
Distance I would have to be in meters is maybe 8 or 10 meters?
That in Feet is 26 or 32 feet.
Building is concrete.
GPS Info:
While I was outside I thought why not test the GPS while im there, so I tested and I WAS F-ING suprised!
At first the GPS Status tool started showing 3 Satellites (no biggie i thought).
So at first it was showing 3, then 7 then a fix and then more, see images.
FIX!
Good Fix!
And more!
First Fix with Wi-Fi OFF
And some more after that, I ran around abit (my neighbours probably thought I was insane LOL) to see how stable the signal was once fixed, these are images taken while lightly running around:
Well I hope this info helps, its seems the Prime is perhaps underestimated?
Also, I am still using it Will take one last snapshot before the battery dies
Some comments on the hardware externally, the dock buttons feels different from the first and second Prime this one the C3 has more smooth button material, the other ones were more rubbery (Which I thought was better). It could be my imagination.
Then there is the backplate, the first one had a more 'flat' surface somewhat similar to the iPad, the second was slightly less 'flat' but on this Prime the backplate is more curved (Again I could be imagining this but I doubt it), there is not 'flat' square in the overall shape that I remember from the first the C1 model.
Any comments are welcomed and I hope this info helped.
Cheers!

Do you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones? Stream a movie with Diceplayer .mkv and sync headphones with your bluetooth. See if audio is in sync on the .mkv movies thru the bluetooth headphones. Mine is working fine for the C2 prime i have. But, some say that even with the new CX models they are still having the Bluetooth fallout issue.
Thanks!
Not sure I do, I rarely ever use bluetooth earphone.
I will see if I can test it and come back with the results.

How the HELL do I attach images to the post I mean for example under a text. not via URL.
How is the color temperature of your screen? I got a C2 from BestBuy and a C3 from Amazon.com. The C2 is slightly blueish and the C3 is yellowish. I pre-ordered another from Amazon hoping to get another C3 with a better screen, but was curious how your C3's screen is.

Color is fine, I've never given it any thought, I only know that sometimes the screen is bright sometimes after watching a movie, but I noticed that if I go back to player used and turn the brightness down the 'colors' are more vivid and not overly bright.
Could be a SW problem, I know that my last 2 units had this issue.

How heavy is the lightbleed?
You have a right to return if you have it in general, but if its alot and bright then you can surely get a new one.
I'm sure the C4 will be interesting, I might change because I still have lightbleeding even though everything is fine, you have to get the most of your money and this machine is not ridiculously cheap.
Maybe those C4's will be better or maybe even C5 by now.

well , it's not heavy yet, but it wasn't there in the beggining i guess. i only notice it when using black background or app with dark coloured theme, which is to say i prefer dark desktops/homescreens/apps. it's becoming more and more noticeable. i have no complains on mine, other that wifi could be just a bit better and this light bleed. my fear is that it will only get worse, like i've seen people describe around here.
i would like to get a newer model, sure, i'll just explain the situation to the store where i bought it. got it the 23rd march. maybe RMA works, who knows, might get lucky.

I think there are C4's out now so when you talk to your shop of purchase, TELL them that you would like a C4, I am on my 3rd Prime and main reason I returned the previous 2 was because of whitee spots, dead pixels and heavy lightbleeding.

Damn it - Nexus 10 has light bleed!!!!

And i was hoping for something without light bleed, aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
Just read Engadgets full review of the nexus 10, generally sounds good, but light bleed is my one bug bare, and yes its there, and they confirmed it on a second device aswell!

Calm down slick. Even two devices doesn't mean that every product off the line will have it. Unless they had checked 20 devices and every one had the same problem, I'm not writing of the device. There are defects. Some people have Nexus 7's with no light bleed, others have it with some light bleed.

Of the 5 reviews so far only Engadget mentioned leakage, everyone else is highly satisfied with the screen. Cnet mentioned these are presale models being tested, so let's just wait for the final version.
With the new Nexus 10 coming out, I strongly believe Apple is going downhill. I do not want to be cynical but had Steve been still alive, this would have never happened. When I saw the Ipad Mini, I thought "This is going to be my first Apple product, though expensive". Then Google announced Nexus 10. Everything changed dramatically. I want Google, and nothing but the Google, so help me God(if any)!!!
Light bleed is kind of a big deal to me too. I don't care about anything being really much over 1920x1080 (although it has to be at least 300PPI for me with Pentile displays, I can still see it), but light bleed might be the deal breaker here when I see this thing. It is not like I absolutely need a tablet with a good desktop, laptop, and phone. I'd be getting it for media and browsing around the house and workplace where screen quality will be the #1 focus.

+1 Can't stand light bleed.
It seems that the contrast is nothing special either, but that's because it's not as bright as other tablets. The black level looks decent according to the tests.
D: ohh lol i hate light bleeds
Does warranty cover light bleeding?
Any LCD with a backlight will suffer from light bleed to some extent even the iPad3 retina (just Google for the pictures). Obviously, something to check for and exchange if it's significant. The pictures on The Verge don't show any signs of it and the pixel level comparison shows the Nexus 10 display to be superior in black level, colors and sharpness against retina.
What is the brightness of the screen, anyway?
There is a firestorm going on over at Engadget over this review. The same reviewer wrote the iPad mini review and fawned over it but nitpicks the Nexus 10. Engadget has been deleting posts that point out the flaws in the review (and back it up with evidence).
I wouldn't put too much stock in this review, but it's always a good idea to be skeptical.

When the spread of the backlight is uneven, so parts of the screen are brighter than others.
I always thought light bleed was the presence of light when there shouldn't be any. Like when you're watching a movie in portrait view, and the black bars on top and bottom show light. That's why I haven't wasted much time with IPS in the last couple years ever since discovering Samsung's AMOLEDs. Uneven backlighting is a different and even worse artifact, and again it only affects non-AMOLED screens.

Seems like they both have pros and cons. Amoled displays have high risk of tint, I experienced this in my s2 for about a year until I finally got a replacement. This one portrays whites much better, or at least now it does. Aside from that you have all benefits, thin capacitive touch layer, vibrant colors (I don't give a **** if they're over saturated, they look great and that's what matters), no risk of light bleed, and huge potential battery savings. In my personal opinion I would take an amoled panel any day. I mean, displays like the super lcd2 in the one x are brilliant, but come on,, have you seen the note 2 on dynamic settings ?

Wished Samsung had gone with SAMOLED. Without a backlight there's no backlight bleed, ghosting, uniformity, etc. issues.

The technology is not there yet, nor is the economy. They simply can't produce a 2560x1680 OLED panel, 10" or otherwise, at a price anyone would be willing to pay.
Look at the PenTile "tricks" they have to pull on Galaxy phones as an indicator of how they're struggling with the tech, look at the very high cost of the Tab 7.7 to see how expensive it gets when you increase size, and to further reinforce that look at the ludicrous price of their big screen SAMOLED televisions compared to LCD and plasma.
Give it a few more years, it'll be feasible, and Samsung is surely working very hard on the problem, since they have a lot invested in pretty much owning the OLED market.
You're right. This is going to be the best 10" screen for the next 6-12 months. Yes it won't look as good as the screen on my S3 but I will be more than happy with it.
8 days and counting!
Hopefully a PCWorld/Currys near me will have it ready to take away!

ZU questions: Cracks/blacks from hell?

I am very close on pulling the trigger on a ZU, coming from a Note II. However, I am quite reluctant to take the plunge because there several serious issues plaguing the ZU, so it seems.
First off, I have heard many nightmare stories about spontaneous cracks that happen for no particular (self inflicted) reason and that it takes weeks to months after to get the phone back and sometimes needing to pay for it. This of course is atrocious service by Sony. I have read a statement from Sony, saying they repair single cracked displays. Anybody experience with this issue and is the ZU really that fragile? It's a big phone and needs to survive in a jeans pocket, logically.
Secondly how bad/ good are the black values in the dark on the ZU? In daylight they seem fine, but in the dark, in bed, watching a movie... Not sure.
Thanks guys.
While I mostly watch comedies or TV shows on my phone and leave more serious watching for my ht room, I never felt bad about the black levels although it's not on par with my previous note phones. My gf is getting note 2 tomorrow so I can take some pics side by side showing the same dark movie scenes.

Thanks for that, I appreciate it. It would probably be best to take them in a pitch black room, as it would be more accurate. No experience with sudden cracks, eh?

I have only read about two or three guys around here that have cracked their screens, so it doesn't look like it's a widespread issue. It is a 6.4" sheet of thin glass though, so you should be careful with it no matter what. The screen is an LCD, so you won't get deep blacks in the dark, since LCDs have a backlight (LED). AMOLEDs don't have that, so that's why you get those deep blacks. Even my old Galaxy Note had a grey-ish black when i used it in the dark, since light from the neighbouring pixels would illuminate the area around.
The blacks looks good in normal light, but it won't look that black in a dark room. That's just how the technology works.

Thanks for your thorough reply :good: Regarding the sudden cracks, people blame the design for it, that the power button placement is the culprit. I.e. the enclosure not being strong enough and it's a design fault. Where I'm from, Holland, there was a tv show that shined a light on the many Xperia screens that cracked, particularly the Z. Hundreds of people had this issue and basically Sony left them out in the cold for weeks to months, saying there wasn't such a problem. We all know they released a statement where they state otherwise and single cracks will (no impact) be repaired under warranty. I am not eager to grab the ZU from my pocket one day and welcomed by a 'sudden crack'. This of course is a risk and a risk any adopter takes.
Regarding the black values, how is the quality of HD content in the dark, I mean are the blacks 'good enough'?

You'll just have to take the chance at this point, but it shouldn't be an issue at all. If it was, you'd be seeing a lot more people complaining around here. Regarding the HD quality in the dark, i don't think you'll have any complaints. The colors and the screen is overall fantastic, but it may take a few watches to get used to the more natural colors if you're used to AMOLED, which in most cases makes everything look fake.

You're absolutely correct on both counts. I need to take the plunge. Yesterday at Mediamarkt the ZU had a dead battery so that didn't help me taking a look at the screen. I will be doing that today at some other stores.
You're absolutely right regarding the samoled screens, they made my eyes adapt to very cartooney color reproduction. Sure it can make everything pop and the blacks are overall (not always) great, but realistic...no. I'm hoping the ZU is the middle road between the sammy's samoled and the somewhat boring IPS displays we see in LG or HTC.
Follow up: So I went on my bike to the city in the worst storm, with rain, hail and thunder, but I conquered the elements, only to be greeted in the end by the marvelous ZU. I saw it yesterday in white and today in black and damn it looks so damn classy in black. A phablet from the future. The screen is pretty much insane, a middle road as I expected, between samoled and LCD IPS. I watched some movie trailer and everything seemed insanely sharp and crisp, with natural realistic color tones.

I took the plunge so far I've even got two of the bloody ultras!

I'm far happier with my Ultra. You will be too!
Alright so a final question regarding contrast, black levels that is, how is it for you guys? Especially in pitch black (at night, while watching videos)? Erica Griffin, who is also a XDA member, posted her review on the ZU on Youtube and mentioned her pretty bad contrast level of 680:1, whereas others have a ratio of 1000:1 and above. What are your findings? The Youtube time link can be found here:

I can't meassure my screen since i have idea how to do it, but remember that it's an LCD, so black won't be black in a dark room. It'll be gray. My friends brand new Samsung Galaxy TabPro has an LCD, and it's the same story there. Even AMOLEDs won't be pitch black in dark places. It'll be darker, but not completely black.
I don't know what else to tell you. You'll have to just check it out yourself and see if it's something you can live with or not. I watch tv shows on my Ultra every night in bed, and i'm not complaining.

Yeah the tech between amoled and lcd is vastly different, which results in various color/brightness traits. It seems there were two different panels used for the ZU, namely the AUO and Sharp, as seen on this image. Perhaps this is why there is a different contrast ratio across the board.

That would be impossible since there is still a small current flowing through the pixels, so they are never really off. But yes, closest to black as possible.

That would cause smearing, sadly, as seen with the Note 3. They fixed that later, not completely turned off.

About the cracked screen, please be careful. I thought that it could never happen to me (I use all my phones with a lote of care, as they are expensive and difficult to repair on warranty in my country). I took it out of my pants, as hundreds of times before, and a cracked screen greeted me. I've been without my SXZU for one month now, and no easy fix awaits. No warranty from Sony (I showed them those web pages where Sony acknowleges the problem), so I have to pay $600 USD to repair it.
I checked other web sites to buy the part (between $150 to $210), but I'm wary about two themes: 1. The quality of the spare part. And 2. I've been looking for instructions on how to repair it myself and let me tell you, it's not easy at all. You have to take the phone apart to get to the display. So I have to look for an expert. An experts are not cheap.
So, it is easy to break and difficult to repair. But you are living in a country that is known to repair on warranty those screen damages, as long as there is just one crack.

Not sure if the ZU is really easy to break. I asked some reps at the shop about it and they told me the problem was really widespread with the Xperia Z, not the ZU. Some people cracked the ZU, sure, but many have not. Not sure what could have caused yours. Hope it works out for you and next time you should probably get a cheap phone insurance which covers these things.

Agreed...
And if possible, a good case/bumper for it too...
