If i do a nandroid backup before unlocking and flashing a new rom, and then use the back up, will it restore my device and lock BL ? will it at least hide the "unlocked" text ?
You can't use CWM without unlocking first, so nope.

Unlocking/Rooting
Ok, so, you can root without unlocking. Rooting allows you to have superuser rights meaning you can change the system. However, without unlocking your bootloader, you cannot boot up a different ROM (a different OS).
I guess if you root, you could then go do a Titanium Backup after installing the app from the Play Store, that could then backup to an SD card (I would then remove it just in case unlocking wipes your SD too!) and you could then unlock and restore your apps and data from Titanium after unlocking. BUT, Titanium is not like nandroid and doesn't backup everything! So backup any essential data twice!
Oh, and relocking is impossible as far as I understand btw, but I understand that you can make it impossible to tell (well other than the burnt out wire which apparently burns when you unlock the device, a permanent change), this can apparently be done via flashing some sbf files and a Fruitcake. But no, when booting a custom ROM, I don't think that you can remove the unlocked text, only when doing a full restore as far as I can understand.

in simple it backs up every single file in your device.....if im not wrong you cant have cwm on locked bootloaders......
Nandroid is a perfect backup tool !! esp. for those who crave to try new ROMs. I'm on Defy and every week, I try a new build of ICS ROM from various people. All I need to do is to backup my MIUI 2.4.20 ROM and flash the new ROM. If the new ROM has problems, it hardly takes 10 min to get my phone to its previous state !!

No way, that is a big misunderstanding! A Nandroid backup (at least one made with CWM 6.0.4.7) only contains parts of the system folder, parts of the data folder and the cache folder of your phone's root. It does NOT backup /sdcard/0 (which actually is /data/media ), that is the part which you are allowed to see without root permissions and here is all the data like photos, media, text files and so on which you created or copied there.
I had to experience this issue with the current boot loop of my phone. :crying:
This "complete backup" statement can be found in many locations of the web. Looks like a lot of people are copying statements without knowing or proofing.
THIS is the way to get the correct data with all the photos and media and so on - at least when recovery is still working:
Enter recovery mode. Connect Phone to PC. ADB should be already installed. Create an empty folder and change directory to there within command shell. Type in
adb pull /sdcard/0
and voilá, there you are. Ok, it takes some time, but then you will have a copy of all the missed data.
Cannot seem to find the answer for this specific device. Will have the ATT USA version of the HOX+ and want to know:
What is the Best Back Up App to get before rooting or anything like that, something that can be found in the Play store? Obviously would want it to backup the basics like calender, contacts, email accounts, etc. Also though, need a backup app that will backup installed App Data like say my game progress for Dead Trigger. I'm reading that once you root your device all App Data is erased to scratch, would hate to invest hours into an app only to have to start all over once Rooted when it does become available for ATT USA version.
Then once i am Rooted, what is the best Rooted Backup App to install that will backup everything above and anything else i would need before unlocking Bootloader and flashing roms?

Upon doing more research online please correct me if i'm wrong here. From my understanding this is the process needed to flash a custom rom:
1. Root your device. Rooting actually does not delete any data or files but virtually "unlocks" (almost like jailbreaking Ios) your device for further access/tweaking abilities.
2. Now that i am rooted i can install titanium backup (is this the best rooted backup, see it mentioned by you guys a lot here) and this rooted backup app will backup virtually everything on my device including app data.
3. Once rooted, i can now install custom recovery (what exactly is this and what does it do?). I'm guessing custom recovery is needed for unlocking the bootloader incase there is a problem custom recovery will recover your device (hints the name custom recovery)?
4. Now i have my device rooted, everything including app data backed up with titanium backup, custom recovery installed, now i can unlock bootloader. Once i unlock bootloader i will then need to restore my device with titanium backup. Now my phone is basically fully unlocked (fully jailbroken) and can now flash any custom rom available for my specific device (ATT HOX+ USA model)?
I see something mentioned about ADB but do not understand what this does or is used for? It seems it is another way of backing up the phone but if so, where is the backup file saved and used for exactly?
Just trying to figure this all out guys, please be easy on me. Trust me i've been researching and just trying to put all the pieces to this android puzzle together here, newb to android and first android device (very excited and just want to do it all right and not have issues of course).
If i'm missing any steps or have them out of order please let me know. I understand there is no root yet for this specific device but just saying if everything was available the steps i laid out is what i would do?

I don't know all the answers to your questions but let me help you make something clear.
Unlocking the bootloader is different from "rooting"
Your warranty is voided when you unlock the bootloader, which is an important step to actually "root". Your bootloader is what you see when you reboot and hold volume down. The step of unlocking the bootloader is the step that cause you to lose your data. So I recommend you to connect your phone and copy all the valuable information and files on it to your PC, then once this step is done you can copy it back.
Rooting: Becoming the administrator of your phone (like sudo in linux) , Becoming a SUPERUSER , meaning you can change system files and so forth and so on (Thats the general explanation however since we all have S-ON so its called temporary root but lets not get ourselves to that yet)
How can you gain root access?
1-Unlock the bootloader
2-Install a custom recovery
3-flash "superuser.zip"(which will be included in almost all the guides that you will follow to root your phone)
Once you have root access you will be able to play with your phone settings , but be careful not to break the settings.
Now concerning your final question , how to "unroot"?
Before you flash "superuser.zip (which will be the real "rooting" of your phone) , you will go to your "custom recovery" (most popular onces are TWRP and CWM) and go to an option called "Backup" and you do a backup called "nandroid backup" , which copies your phone AS IT IS , which then you can copy it to your PC. You will be able to restore it using the recovery you had installed as it is. Which technically will "unroot" your phone.
Question you might ask: That is so cool, but can't I do it before unlocking the bootloader and losing all my data? from my EXPERIENCE and what I searched , No.
Then how will I benefit? Since having root access to your phone might put your phone in danger of breaking something , or installing a bad ROM (read about this topic before rooting. Here is a summary: "HTC Sense" is a ROM. "Samsung TouchWIZ" is a ROM, "Stock Android" is a ROM) you will have a full safe backup that you will be able to restore so you can have your phone running again.
Also note the following: Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to install custom roms , when you install custom roms your APPs are deleted BUT the data IN your SDcard directory will not be harmed (Music, pics..etc)
So how can I recover my applications? By installing "titanium backup" you will be able to backup all your applications apk and data, saved to your internal storage, so when you switch roms , you need to redownload the app and then restore your data, and you will have all your data back.
So why can't I use that before I unlock the bootloader? Because Titanium backup ITSELF requires root access to access your apps apks and do full backups.
Also a note, when flashing your FIRST ROM, you will sweat like a pig when you get stuck on "Boot screen" , its called a "BOOT LOOP" , do not fear. Since HTC has all the bootloaders S-ON (till now) you will need when you switch ROMS to flash the boot.img to your phone. HOW?
Google "Fastboot flash boot boot.img HTC" and you will see tons of guides. It should also be noted in every single custom ROM guide that you will need to follow that STEP.
ALSO!!! Do NOT FORGET TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE ROOTING AND BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM!! AND DONT INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM FOR "AT&T" AND YOUR PHONE IS INTERNATIONAL AND VICE VERSA.
I rooted my phone and I wish I had someone to tell me that in a single post , so I spent around 10 minutes writing this guide , which I hope people will find useful.

I know its sort of tiring but honestly the payoff is massive, atleast to me. I explored things I didn't know about my phone. I learned information about how the phone is made. These information help you.
Inaddition to having custom ROMs, rooting offers you the benefit of backing up your games which is not available on stock.

If you root now, you'll be able to use titanium backup and backup all the data you want! Then you can transfer these game and app datas across any android device in the future!

Hey guys, I've rooted, installed CWM Recovery, Unlocked Bootloader, and installed CyanogenMod on another phone before.
The thing is, I've had this phone for about 6 months and wanted to do the same. However, after browsing through the forums, man are there a lot of scary sh*t going down. I would like the request the procedure to install CyanogenMod safely, without losing any Keys/IMEI/XReality/DRMkeys/Etcetera.
I dont know if the method given by FXP is supposed to be this straight forward, but I too like others, do not want to risk losing important stuff if it can be avoided (Keys/IMEI/XReality/DRMkeys/Etcetera).
HOWTO
Install instructions:
first time
- power off the phone:
- hold vol+ and plug usb to boot into fastboot (blu led)
- fastboot flash boot boot.img (from cm10 zip)
- fastboot reboot
- enter recovery, on boot led will be violet for 3'', during this period press vol+
- flash rom zip
- flash gapps zip
- wipe
- reboot
for update just flash rom zip from recovery
Google Apps are not included in this ROM. You'll need to find those yourself if you want them.

Frankly speaking, the forums is pretty much jumbled up, and the existing [Guide] Threads are either incomplete (Lacking important steps), or Unclear (Non-Specific steps).
Perhaps someone could do me a favour by using the template that I have below to help me, and possibly others, to install CM 10.2 on our beast of a phone.

you will have to back up the data anyways. I think unlocking the bootloader does a factory reset, as well one is needed going from stock to CM if i unforget correctly
I am also wondering about this. I'm currently running firmware .257.
I understand that I need to back up the TA partition first (though I'm not exactly sure on what I will loose if I don't). I also understand that to do this I need to root the stock rom. I understand that in order to root, I'll need to first downgrade to an earlier firmware using flashtool. However, after that I'm not so sure what I need to do. As far as I can see, the only method of gaining root currently is to use vRoot, which is currently under investigation for IMEI mining.
How else can I root the device? I was thinking of maybe using the recovery for locked bootloaders here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2426739

OK, so looking into this further, you already need to have root to be able to flash the "CWM for locked bootloader" rocovery. So as far as I can see, the only way to get root in order to back up the TA partition is to give your IMEI to the Chinese via vRoot?
Thank god the stock rom is so good.

You have to unlock the bootloader to flash custom ROMs. You can flash stock ROMs without unlocking it, but you have to unlock it if you want CM, PAC, PA etc.

sorry for the Qs but haven't had a locked bootloader since the htc desire (although the s-off for that one was to remap the partitions to allow more room for data) and the reasons for unlocking don't seem to be the same.

Nothing will happen if you try it now. You can easily unlock the bootloader by going to Sony's Dev site, request your key and use Flashtool to unlock it. It takes a couple of minutes once you have Flashtool and the drivers installed. It's also perfectly safe to unlock it and you will lose your warranty. BUT you can easily relock it again if something happens to your ZU and the warrenty will be back.
Remember to backup your TA before you unlock your bootloader. It contains a lot if device info and your unique DRM keys. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the system partition, but you will still have root, photos, music etc. (But do a backup of those just in case).

i have already done a backup of my TA part so that side of it is ok. i'll leave unlocking until there's a rom i want to try. possibly a complete 4.4 or something.

If you've already backed up your TA, it means that you have the drivers installed, so job done All you have to do is to install Flashtool and get your key from Sony (which you will get on your email straight away). Either way, just ask here if/when you want to unlock it so we can guide you through it (it's very easy though).
ran flashtool but gave me driver errors - missing. unable to install the drivers included (i guess due to windows 8 driver signing)

I am just getting back to messing around with phones after about 5 years. So many things have changed and I am trying to get answers here as well.
I used TWRP and Magisk to root my phone. Installing TWRP will not wipe your data as it is flashed to a different partition but to install TWRP you have to unlock the bootloader and that will wipe your userdata. And no, I don't believe there is any possibility of rooting without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide you want to go back to stock, there are stock roms available and you can re-lock the bootloader on the N10 so you should be able to set it back to just like it was when you first bought it. I say should because I have never done it, just read that it can be done when I unlocked and flashed mine.
I wish I could be of more help but so many things have changed in the years since I've been away from doing this stuff I feel like a total noob again.

No I do not believe there's a way to gain root without flashing anything. There's no need to backup anything you can always use the MSM download tool to restore your device. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...l-to-restore-your-device-to-oxygenos.4204445/ You should be able to find most of the stock imgs on here already if you'd really need to flash back. I'm no expert either, just my experience with this phone in particular has been pretty straightforward. I never backed up anything lol.
Twrp is iffy i made a backup I'll never use, check out the post about flashing international rom to tmo and metro devices, that's my backup. Also you can run 11.0.3/2 firmware and boot 11 gsi's the post about lir rom has the info. Flash the product_gsi.img referenced there, I have never deleted my product partition and I only leave oos ten installed long enough to take ota's. There are more roms in the source forge page referenced with lir rom post. Flash magisk via recovery, either side load or twrp, pay attention that it flashes partition sda14(super image) or wifi breaks.
