[Q] Some serious "missing stuff" issue after rooting Neo V - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Hello everyone.
I unlocked the bootloader of my phone, and I rooted it today. I want to ask you guys, is it normal to lose all your applications, widgets and contacts? Cause I didn't see any warnings. Anyway I don't really care about the apps and the widgets but I could use my contacts if you guys have a clue. Else I would need to ask a lot of people to remake the list .
Thanks

I think unlocking of bootloader using official method wipes all data for safety...
dont know about other method
and about contect, you can sync it with your google account..

Unlocking by testpin method and rooting not affect any data!
Is the possible that you after instaling zip from cwm recovery accidentaly do full wipe?

I in fact unlocked the bootloader with the official method. And I notice this now:
Certain content on your phone may also be inaccessible due to the removal of DRM security keys and the secure user data partition while unlocking the boot loader.
We advise you to create backups, since user data, settings and accounts will be removed.

I also used the official method and didn't lose any contacts, so I don't think the warning applies to that. I think it's a "just in case" warning...

[Q] unlocking , rooting and data.

Hey guys, I have just one quick question.
I can manage unlocking the bootloader and rooting my device but I'm afraid that by doing so, everything on my phone will go back to stock, kinda like doing a factory reset. I have spent literally a week setting up my homescreens and downloading all the apps that I needed so having my phone go back to stock would be highly inconvenient.
Can anyone who has rooted their amaze confirm this? Did unlocking and rooting your device made it go back to stock and you had to set up everything again?
Once you unlock your bootloader your device doe's a factory reset , after that you won't need to factory reset unless u flash a ROM & there are 4 ROMS to choose from now .
Thank you for your answer.
Greatly appreciate it.
No problem , if you need anymore help just hit me up .

Great reply Rev.
For the OP, use MyBackup Free to backup your apps and settings.
The settings is easy to restore but until you have root... the apps is kind of a pain. But it's easier than going through Market.
I do not have a micro sd card, do i need one when rooting or unlocking my droid?

You do because the current recovery does not mount allow flashing from the internal sdcard.

[Q] Enabling 3 / 4G Hotspot

Hi Guys,
I have a (new to me) Rezound that has the latest Verizon / HTC version of ICS (4.0.3) on it . I would like to unlock the 3G / 4G Hotspot on it.
I've done some searching and read a lot of threads on the subject. The best I have found is a thread by SirGatez about a modified wifi-tether application. The downside is that it appears that I need to root my phone in order to make this application work. That leads me to my question:
Do I need root in order to unlock the Hotspot / Teathering? I previously had a DROID Incredible that was very easy to mod the Hotspot.
I have looked into Rooting and it seems very complicated. There are so many threads on the subject that it is a little overwhelming. I would rather not root if I don't need too.
Thank you for your help,
Scott
PDA-net is the only app that can tether without root. But that is only over USB. To do wifi, you need root then download any of the tether apps in the play store.
GrayTheWolf, thank you for your quick reply. Obviously not the answer I was looking for. I will go back to studying up on rooting.
Part of my concern about rooting is that most of the rooting threads were written before the release of ICS 4.0.3. Best I can tell, it makes a difference. I really need to find instructions that are not over my head. Very simple instructions for a noob like myself.
If you happen to know of such a thread, please let me know.
Thanks again,
Scott
Have you tried fox-fi from the market

[Recovery] Amon Ra style vigor and then go from there there

Thank you pwned3 for suggesting foxfi. I tried it and it will not work on my Rezound. That would have been just to cool.
famouscollin, thank you for your reply. Unlocking the bootloader via htcdev.com? Is that what is called S-OFF (for off standard)? I thought that was only the first step to rooting my rezound. Is that all I need to do to get the WiFi hotspot working.
I'm going to do the bootloader unlock in a few minutes. But that brings me to another question:
I bought Titanium Backup so that I could back up my Rezound before making any changes. I have been using Backup Pro, but everyone on this forum seems to use Titanium. The problem is that Titanium tells me it won't work if not rooted. That seems to defeat the whole purpose of what I wanted it for. Will Titanium work after I unlock the bootloader? Sorry about all the questions.
You have a great forum going here, and I really appreciate all of your help. Seriously!

Titanium will work if you unlock boot loader and install superuser from amon ra.

no unlocking your bootloader and adding a custom recovery is your first step. that give you the ability to do everything your wanting to.. s-off is just another security measure. you can still do everything in unlocked s-on (for the most part) its just a lil more complicated doing it.
and as for titanium it will work after you unlock and get root.. but if your wanting to back up now thats your problem. unlocking your bootloader does a factory reset so your gonna wanna back stuff up before you unlock..

The VZW tethering thing you have to pay for.
To do tethering without paying you will need to be rooted and install a tethering app from the play store.

Famous - I'm so glad you thought to mention the "factory reset" thing. That totally sucks, I have spent many hours installing apps and setting up my Rezound to be the way I like it. Do I loose everything, including my gmail setup? I have some backup I made using MyBackup Pro that I can use to restore from. That leads me to two more questions: Will the restore undo the htcdev thing? And should I remove the SD card so it does not get erased?

as for your gmail youll jast have to log back in and let all contacts and email sync. apps and such youll have to do another way (such as the mybackupro thing you spoke of) and you need to do amonRa after you unlock.. the google.doc link i gave you is from my google drive its the PROPER superSU.zip you flash it in recovery after you insatll recovery (amonRa Recovery) itll give you root on your stock rom. then just boot the phone and open the superSU app it installed and accept the update... then install this app from the appstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
once your that far open up the app, grant it permissions, change device profile to htc rezound(vigor), set-up method to Netd(master), dont enable wifi encription,go all the way down and make sure routing fix is checked.
all should be good. oh and an easy DUMB mistake even ive made...... make sure your 4g is on before you try to tether.. lol
EDIT: no once you unlock your unlocked til you lock again, restoring apps and syncing your gmail again wont back pedal that.. and as for your sd im pretty sure it doesnt wipe that but yes you could remove it to be safe.. i personall have like three extra ones for playing around, and my 32gb for all my backups, and stuff.

You guys are great! Thank you so much for the help.
Do you think I need to worry about restoring with MyBackupPro after I unlock? With MyBackupPro, you can backup and restore applications, selecting each one you want to restore. You can also backup what they call "data". The categories for data are as follows:
Contacts
Call log
Bookmarks
SMS
MMS
System Settings
Android Home
Alarms
Dictionary
Calendar
Music PlayList
APN's
Apps Organizer (v1.5.15)Some of these are no-brainers, but I'm wondering if there are others that could screw with the unlock. I.E. I don't know what APN's are. And maybe restoring System Settings could be a problem.
What do you think? Is there any way the MyBackupPro restore can screw up the bootloader unlock?
No, it won't affect it.
The unlock is in your bootloader, which is waaaayyyy at the bottom of the accessibility list. APNs are Access Point Names or Nodes or something.
Great! Thank you.
Hey, I'm part way through the bootloader unlock. Do I need the SDK for Windows for what I'm trying to do?

yes if your on windows.. lol also you need to make sure you have the ability to unzip/extract zip files. i believe windows 7 has the ability built in. i helped a guy recently to soff, that was the only real issue he ran into..(i wouldnt doubt theres a work around if you cant unzip properly it would just seem to be a pain in the a**)

My phone is HTC One X+ running Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5.

I don't know all the answers to your questions but let me help you make something clear.
Unlocking the bootloader is different from "rooting"
Your warranty is voided when you unlock the bootloader, which is an important step to actually "root". Your bootloader is what you see when you reboot and hold volume down. The step of unlocking the bootloader is the step that cause you to lose your data. So I recommend you to connect your phone and copy all the valuable information and files on it to your PC, then once this step is done you can copy it back.
Rooting: Becoming the administrator of your phone (like sudo in linux) , Becoming a SUPERUSER , meaning you can change system files and so forth and so on (Thats the general explanation however since we all have S-ON so its called temporary root but lets not get ourselves to that yet)
How can you gain root access?
1-Unlock the bootloader
2-Install a custom recovery
3-flash "superuser.zip"(which will be included in almost all the guides that you will follow to root your phone)
Once you have root access you will be able to play with your phone settings , but be careful not to break the settings.
Now concerning your final question , how to "unroot"?
Before you flash "superuser.zip (which will be the real "rooting" of your phone) , you will go to your "custom recovery" (most popular onces are TWRP and CWM) and go to an option called "Backup" and you do a backup called "nandroid backup" , which copies your phone AS IT IS , which then you can copy it to your PC. You will be able to restore it using the recovery you had installed as it is. Which technically will "unroot" your phone.
Question you might ask: That is so cool, but can't I do it before unlocking the bootloader and losing all my data? from my EXPERIENCE and what I searched , No.
Then how will I benefit? Since having root access to your phone might put your phone in danger of breaking something , or installing a bad ROM (read about this topic before rooting. Here is a summary: "HTC Sense" is a ROM. "Samsung TouchWIZ" is a ROM, "Stock Android" is a ROM) you will have a full safe backup that you will be able to restore so you can have your phone running again.
Also note the following: Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to install custom roms , when you install custom roms your APPs are deleted BUT the data IN your SDcard directory will not be harmed (Music, pics..etc)
So how can I recover my applications? By installing "titanium backup" you will be able to backup all your applications apk and data, saved to your internal storage, so when you switch roms , you need to redownload the app and then restore your data, and you will have all your data back.
So why can't I use that before I unlock the bootloader? Because Titanium backup ITSELF requires root access to access your apps apks and do full backups.
Also a note, when flashing your FIRST ROM, you will sweat like a pig when you get stuck on "Boot screen" , its called a "BOOT LOOP" , do not fear. Since HTC has all the bootloaders S-ON (till now) you will need when you switch ROMS to flash the boot.img to your phone. HOW?
Google "Fastboot flash boot boot.img HTC" and you will see tons of guides. It should also be noted in every single custom ROM guide that you will need to follow that STEP.
ALSO!!! Do NOT FORGET TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE ROOTING AND BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM!! AND DONT INSTALL A CUSTOM ROM FOR "AT&T" AND YOUR PHONE IS INTERNATIONAL AND VICE VERSA.
I rooted my phone and I wish I had someone to tell me that in a single post , so I spent around 10 minutes writing this guide , which I hope people will find useful.
Best of luck mate
Also note that this is the wrong section, since its a question it should go to "Q&A section".

I know its sort of tiring but honestly the payoff is massive, atleast to me. I explored things I didn't know about my phone. I learned information about how the phone is made. These information help you.
Inaddition to having custom ROMs, rooting offers you the benefit of backing up your games which is not available on stock.

[Q] Questions - Bootloader / Root

Hi everyone, sorry if this is the wrong spot to ask.
I have pre ordered a Z2 and since I am new to android and have always been an avid jailbreaker, would like to root my Z2 and eventually play around with custom ROMS.
DooMLoRD announced today that Touch Recovery is working on the Z2 so it can now be unlocked and rooted. I have a few Q's specific to this process.
1. Correct me if I'm wrong but at the moment there is no way to root the Z2 WITHOUT first unlocking it?
2. You need root to do a TA backup, so the current process of unlocking then rooting will result in lost DRM keys?
3. I read that unlocking wipes all data. Does that mean that the Z2 is then unbootable until you have flashed a ROM. Or is the stock ROM still actually in place and bootable, just without any user data?
4. What specific features are lost when you don't have DRM keys? I read something about losing functionality in the photo album and walkman apps, and bravia engine (but that may have related to unlocking the Z!).
1. You are correct.
2. Correct again.
3. The stock ROM will be in place and the phone will be usable, but all user data will be wiped.
4. I have the same question for the Z2. I haven't seen the answer anywhere, but I think @DooMLoRD and @yeeson should know...

When you say this, what exactly do you mean? Since a phone has a lot of functions. Calls still work I presume, as well as wifi and mobile data. Camera, audio, play store and google apps etc...?
I thought it was just a few Sony specific functions that stop working, like Sony's OTA updates.
It seems blog sites all over the net are reporting this method of rooting as an easy user-ready option. In their rush to get hits, they are completely neglecting to mention the fact that at the moment this is a one-way process, and that there are some very specific downsides to rushing into rooting the Z2 at the moment.
I hope people are doing their reading first

But you only can relock the bootloader only if the Z2 gets a proper root with locked bootloader in order to perform a backup of the TA partition. Once you unlocked it without backup, DRM keys will be lost forever and you'll lose your warranty and you won't ever be able to relock it again. No you can't use the TA backup from another phone. It would hard-brick your phone. I hope that helps!

You MIGHT lose X Reality. DooMLoRD has tweeted a few days ago that all devices with 4.4 that unlock their bootloader will not lose it anymore, but, not that I don't believe him, but I will only be 100 about that seeing many confirmations.
Also, I think you might lose the possibility to use Music and Video Unlimited. Haven't heard anything about PS Mobile, but I think it is included. Can't remember anything else...

root possible?

Has anyone tried to root this xz1?
Rooting should not be the problem since the bootloader is unlockable. The problem is how to backup the drm keys to make sure that some Sony functions dont get lost. Currently there is no known method to backup and restore or bypass the drm problem
At least to my knowledge

Are those restored when you re-lock the bootloader? Let's say I don't care about the warranty, but I don't want to lose the option of restoring the phone to the same state in which it left the factory; is that an option? Sorry for the noob question.
