[Q] Main reason for custom roms or the lack there of. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I'm sorry but this question has been bothering me for sometime. I have googled this question but have had no luck. What is the main reason there aren't a lot of custom roms like the international one has? I know our device is newer so I'm just simply asking. This isn't a complaint, ETA or a rant, its simply a question. I know when the atrix came out there were some pseudo roms out until the bootloader became unlocked and then the floodgates opened. Will most of the international roms make it over to this phone eventually. I'm sorry in advanced if this question has been asked before but I really tried to find it first.

the international phone uses a different chipset than this one so no none of the roms will work. the reason we dont have so many roms is because we dont have as many devs as everyone else does (my opinion) but this phone isnt that greatly wanted because of its size so we may never have a lot of roms. the ones we do have are great we just need more themes to go with them. you can port a rom from the skyrocket or t-mobile gs2 if you would like to. im currently running t-mobile ics rom now

Im hoping that theres lot of roms to come but what do i know. The phone is great, not sure why its not popular, yea its big but still sick.

How would one go about flashing a to gs2 Rom on the 1717?

I believe someone tried to flash a skyrocket rom to their note... didn't end well.
The moral of the story is: you can't.
Edit: unless you port it (something not so easy), as smartguy044 said.

You have to change a few files but it works. Im using tmobile rom with everything working great and a theme for the skyrocket

How did you do it? Which ROM and what changes did you have to make? There's a considerable difference in displaybresolution, so I'm curious as to how you did it.

Eh. The main reason is because this phone is so new. It hasn't even been out for 2 months. Thats not long in the dev community. Hell, it took like 6 months just to unlock the bootloader on my atrix and even longer for ROMs. With ICS rolling out and the note gaining traction, you will see an abundance of dev help in the coming months

I agree that the Note is "wanted", which will eventually be great for future rom development. However, the figure is 5 million sold globally since the global version's release, not just the US market.

Better than I expected.

We just had a few new dev's join our team, announcement of upcoming cm9, ics release... i'd say we're in pretty good shape for some solid roms coming very soon.

AOSP ICS Alpha?

I've been following this thread for a bit now and looks like the dev has been going through some builds(albeit, alpha) pretty quickly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402431
It looks to be an attempt to help/take some pressure of teamhacksung CM9 endeavor. Op has got a bunch of stuff fixed(mic, camera still broken). It looks like Codeworkx has even been giving OP some direction too.
I'm sure a lot of you have been following this development too, but when it all gets worked out, what does/can it mean for us I777 owners?
Edit: I know there are a bunch of ICS anticipation threads already(I'm not trying to add to clutter) but I did debate putting this in Q&A
That sounds promising. It's a good thing that they're close to a new kernel. Would love to test it out, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work to hellraise it. I really don't take pics, and I could easily just text people if need be.
You know it works if you flash it like they say to right? No need to hellraise. The soft keys are a little wonky, but its fun to get a good feel of aosp ics.

I would run ICS without calls and just tell everyone the mic is broken, too.

I was wondering if anybody was working on AOSP ICS for the S2. I just came from the Captivate and of course, right when I decided to upgrade they released AOSP ICS for it. Luckily I still have my Captivate so I can play with it.

Well its simply a matter of duration. The captivate has been out for over a year and a half. The dev community there has had all that time to work through the various leaks, numerous builds(whether samsung or att approved). Basically, a lot of the problems that are being run into with the SGS II have been solved months ago for other devices(captivate, vibrant). In short, they've been at it a lot longer. Keep in mind the GS II has been out just shy of 3 months and look what the devs have already done...

Yea, i came from a TMO Vibrant and ICS Passion runs like a freaking dream. Since the GS2 is such a popular device, I thought ICS was very far along till I got it myself and checked the dev forum... pity that the forgotten Vibrant has a fully working ICS and GS2 doesnt yet. Anyway im still happy with it, but ICS is the peice of the puzzle missing for me (ASOP, not that Touchwiz crap BTW)

the thing is, is that we would need a kernel. Entropy won't hack-job a kernel for this kind of a build im sure.

I disagree. The gs2 has been out for 8mo. The issue we have is that no devices use our chipset really - its rare so to speak. The original gs series has a port basically because of the nexus s - same hardware to an extent.

I'm speaking of the ATT variant(I777) which came out 10/2. International variant, yes, has been out a while longer, but there are some differences in each. Yes, they share the same chipset but that hasn't stopped the Dev's in the I9100 forums from putting out solid roms. Otherwise, why would we need Hellraiser if they are that "similar".
You disagree that its just a matter of time? If so, you don't think that in another 3 months we'll have made major progress related to Roms(whether ICS or not), kernels, etc?
Edit: Just came across this new thread started by codeworkx this am:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400

[Q] ICS?

I know we don't have any ICS kernel sources yet but do you think we will get ICS before this August?
I thought I read somewhere that we were getting it in the next month or two. I would assume we would have a good working ICS port at the least in the next month or two. Can't speak for the devs here, but I thought that's what we were looking at. As for when ATT will push it out, that could be forever...I hate how long they take, but oh well.

Having used ICS on the captivate, it truly is an update worth switching devices for. However, I'm pretty happy with the I777 so I will just wait. Android updates that were actually really good: Froyo, Honeycomb, and ICS. The rest were just hyped too damn much and gingerbread is the worst of all of them (imho).

For one, it's not just ICS when Jellybean comes out, you're going to get it much quicker than anyone else. And also, it's the purest form of the Android version minus any bloatware each manufacturer puts on the phone, which can be either a pro or a con, but overall, the bloatware has been a con in the past.
IMO, Gingerbread was a very good update, Froyo didn't seem that special when I finally got it for my S7. The biggest improvement was non-broken radio firmware, which had nothing to do with Android version.
Gingerbread had significant power management improvements.

I love and appreciate all the work that the Devs have done for our phone, but if we don't get ICS soon I will be leaving this phone. A lot of my friends have phones with ICS roms and it is such a improvement over GB. I don't understand how one and two year old phones have ICS and Samsung won't allow us to have it. It is ridiculous.

What the hell is your problem? Name one phone other than the Nexus line that has received ICS officially.
HTC hasn't released any updates yet.
Motorola hasn't released any updates yet.
Sony has only released betas (I applaud them for putting out prereleases)
Asus has only pushed it to one tablet (easier to port HC tablets due to HC being a newer codebase and not having to deal with the RIL) and that was an utter disaster
So far, my experience with ICS is that it's not an improvement over Gingerbread. I haven't been able to see any significant positive improvement - some parts of the UI are a bit shinier, but the gapps user interface is clunker than it was in GB. ICS has some good improvements on tablets, but for phones - not so nice.

First of all I said that I APPRECIATE the devs!!!! And I never said that the roms were official. Almost all HTC and LG phones have ICS roms. I left t-mobile with the htc sensation and believe me that phone runs 300% better now that it is running ICS. And by the way Entropy it is no disrespect to any dev by what I said, I am rocking your Kernel right now (Excellent job). I am pissed at Samsung and them only. Our phone is supposed to be a flagship phone so what the hell is the holdup?
If you can't wait then just go get the G Nexus. These questions have been brought up and beaten to death. Just don't be surprised when Ics finally drops for our device and our Roms are superior than most. GS2 surely has the hardware to run prety much anything smoothly and dev community is strong here

Gingerbread ROM on Galaxy SIII

Howdy,
For testing purposes I want to load a pre-ICS ROM on my GalaxyS3. I need the flash built in that got dropped with ICS.
Has anyone tried this? If so, what are recommended ROMs?
If no one has done this, what ROMs are closest to what the S3 runs and would stand the greatest chance of working?
Thanks,
Joe
Presume this is a test to see how fast you can brick your SGS3 .
Adobe Flash player works on ICS .

to be equally fair, i'm in the same boat. i had a captivate for a while, loved the gb roms i flashed constantly to find my favourite. bought an s2 and absolutely love the phone. i hard bricked my previous s2, i dont think i had the right kernel, something i did was for a non canadian version of the s2. after i sold that one i bought another brand new s2. the s3 was around for a little while at this point but my girlfriend has a galaxy nexus and her sister an s3 and i just dont like the way ics and jb look, feel and operate. it felt like switching from windows to a mac after using windows for years. i would go to close a window and the 'x' was in the upper left and not right like windows.
its a personal opinion, i'm sure in many ways firmwares past gb are better in many quantifiable ways, but i just dont like em. not to mention the stupid physical home button like some loser iphone. i love the 4 backlit buttons that samsung uses on many devices like the blu ray player i have. it's just awesome.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of android?
in closing, think of the amount of roms out there for the captivate which are based on froyo people still use. gb ics and even jb roms are available but many people still prefer the look and feel of froyo.
anyway, long story short - is there any other demand worth warranting a dev to make a gb rom for phones past that version of

Even the international variant doesn't have fully working CM10 yet the last I saw, though they were getting close. Historically, CDMA devices are even harder to get working.

I thought the Verizon model had different partitions etc. The reason why the unlock process was different.
Do we know what devs might be working on a CM10 port? If somebody is working on it, it would be nice to have a status thread. I know that is asking alot and we are very early in the "post-unlocked bootloader era", but I just want a device that has stock jelly bean on it! Even with Bean's ROM it is way too Touch-Wizy.
I would give money to that person, assuming they are committed to ongoing support (aka they own the SGH-I605).

sbrissen is "working" on it, and I'm guessing there will be a post about it at some point soon, but that is on his time table. It will be posted when ready for public consumption.
Also, the VZW version has a slightly different partition layout, but not overly different. Most of the partitions are at the same location as the international variant. The other versions didn't have an unlock process because their bootloader wasn't locked. The unlock guide you see posted is for the SIM card so you can use any carrier SIM in it.
Delete
The sad thing about the facebutt world is it created users who want everything now. There needs to be normal roms in mass and then we will get aokp. I can't think of a vzw phone whose boot loader was cracked so fast, I wasn't interested in the s3. The Htc phones I've had as of late took months to get "fixed" but that gave time for devs to work on their roms. I'm in enjoying my note as is [rooted & unlocked] at the moment. However, if you are looking for a timetable use 3 months and we should have some nice roms by then.

Verizon Galaxy Note II Development...

I’ve been curious as to why development and rom builds have been so slow to come to the Verizon Galaxy Note II? I look at other carriers and see that they have a more extensive collection of ROMS available and was wondering why?
The reason for thisi is our devs have currently been working out keeping unlocked bootloaders on the latest update for some unfortunate people, And we are just getting started with the roms. FOr the best roms, let the devs work on their own pace.

From past experience, I've had a phone with many roms but most of them had their share of bugs which drove me away. I have used Scott's roms before the note 2 and his attention to detail and simplicity is unsurpassed, we are very fortunate to have him. We also are lucky to have CM builds pumping out as my former device waited over a year for just the beta.

Really most OTA ROMS are not all that different.. Sure some have more options etc.. The real fun comes when AOSP is stable..
We just got official CM nightly's as of yesterday.. While there are a few things to work out with kinks here and there, the real fun has just begun...

It will only improve. Verizon was late to the party with their variant and locked out the bootloader. Nobody is going to develop much on a device with locked bootloader. Also, it is true that devs have been busy helping us noobs.
I didn't think development would even be this fast. This is the best phone on the best carrier, so I assume development will continue. I am sure many people have a GS3 already, so won't be moving to this platform.
Speed up development by donating to a dev.

Didn't someone just release a mod that a allows cross carrier roms?! Not to mention aosp is finally getting solid. Patience is a virtue, things are taking off.
I personally think the development on this device has been great. Better than I expected really, given the way Verizon tried to chase away users from this device with stupid things like the branding on the home button. At the end of the day I'm just happy with what we have. Could have been a lot worse without Adam.
If your that bored flash some N7105 base roms. Just don't derp and flash the radios for the other carriers. I am running SkyNote right now.

Can someone point me to the thread where both radio files are? I downloaded VRALL4 but I want to flash the older one. Thanks.

I’ve been curious as to why development and rom builds have been so slow to come to the Verizon Galaxy Note II? I look at other carriers and see that they have a more extensive collection of ROMS available and was wondering why?

I think one of the reason why is lack of stock functionality. The varieties of AOKP, Baked, CM, AOSP, Miui roms have been extremely popular and successful on other Google devices(varieties of these roms account for more than 50% of entire roms), but apparently not many people demand those roms on Galaxy Note2 because of lack of stock functionality...such as SPen, page buddy, other good motion functions, and etc, etc. I used to be a huge fan of AOKP roms while I was owning Galaxy Nexus, but after switching to GNote2, I never looked back. I wanted more of Samsung experience rather than Google.

I agree with this. I want to keep most of the stock functionality with the ability to mod. Hence why I love beans rom.
