[Q] Go closest to ICS experience by changing the menu key to Recent apps? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HTC One X, S, LG 4X, and upcoming ICS phones all have 3 keys but replaced the menu key with recent apps key. What if we configure the S2 that way to get closest to ICS experience? But I don't know how they solve the current apps that rely on menu key.

You can flash on screen buttons from themes and apps section
I think it will be included in cm9 settings(that menu button takes to recent apps thing)

Lack of a menu button

I am noticing a huge design mistake by HTC and perhaps other manufacturers.
With the on screen buttons on the Gnex, the menu button comes and goes depending on the context (app). With the HTC one X for example, there is no onscreen buttons and no physical menu button (unless I am mistaken).
I know google is telling devs to incorporate visible menu buttons in apps but the fact is that MANY apps still do not have on screen menus. Is this not a huge design problem for HTC?
Anyways, HTC attempted to avoid on screen buttons to give more space for the phone itself. Different apps have menu buttons in different locations because of the buttons being capacitive instead of on the screen. Example: the stock ICS browser has the tabs buttons next to the URL, but HTC has the menu button next to the URL in Sense 4.0.
I don't think its a design flaw at all IMO. In fact, I find the buttons being capacitive to be better than wasting screen space. Besides, there are things called updates for apps and I'm sure that the menu flaw will be resolved in the future.

I am not arguing if on screen is better than on phone buttons (I always though they weren't until I owned a Gnex, don't put it off until you have tried it yourself)
What I am getting at is: use the xda app for example. On the HTC one x. There is no way to bring up the menu

AFAIK, to avoid this problem, HTC released an API for developers to use so that an on screen menu button will show if the app requires it, much like the GNex menu button. I tried a port of the Sense 4 One V ROM for my DHD, and in that ROM it showed me a black bar at the bottom with a menu button for all the apps that requested for it. Apps which had an on screen menu button didn't cause this bar to show up.

It won't be a problem for newer apps which have been moving the menu button to the upper right hand corner, but for older apps that haven't been updated and still rely on the legacy menu button where will it appear on the One X? On CM9 on my Touchpad the legacy menu button will show next to the other soft buttons when needed and this is how it is on the Gnex as well I believe. I don't know why Google wants to move the menu button though, it was fine where it was.
Well the onscreen keys should have a legacy menu button appear, if it doesn't on the One X then HTC ****ed up

Menu button hack for multitasking

Hello,
I know this question was asked elsewhere, but I did not find any solution to this.
Is it possible to make the capacitive Menu button function like a multitasking button in Galaxy S2?
If there is one thing I hate, it is having to long press Home to get to the multitasking menu.
I would really love to replace the menu key to do multitasking.
This is not unlike what HTC did with One X where did the opposite and gave an option to make the multitasking key a menu key.
I think by now, most of the applications in play store do have menu option within the app interface following android guidelines.
So, lack of a dedicated menu button should not be an issue.
If anyone knows any custom ROM or any other hack to achieve this, please do let me know.
Cheers.
CM10 -> Settings -> System -> Hardware keys -> Menu key or Menu key (long press) -> Recent apps switcher.
If you select Menu key (short press), I guess you'll ahve to enable the Show action overflow below to have the 3 dots as menu key in apps.
Maybe CM9 does have this too, and maybe AOKP (although I never saw this on ICS AOKP or JB AOKP).

Noob question about CM 10 menu button

I'm running kushdeck's cm10 10/15 rom and just realized none of my apps have a menu button? I'm guessing i'm missing something stupidly simply. For example in the google play store i can't access my apps or settings on my sense rom i had the standard 3 dot button next to the search icon in the top right on cm 10 i have nothing same for twitter and other apps.
So how do i utilize a menu key on jb/cm10?
nvm figured it out (its been a while since i've run cm roms) for anyone looking for a solution go to settings>system>hardward keys and add a dual function to a buttom, ie long press of recent apps = menu

[Q] Any way to remap the physical home button to the recent apps menu?

I've got a galaxy s3 running AOKP 4.2.2, and I want to make the home button open recent apps with a single click instead of having to long press or hit it to go to the home screen, then hit it again for recent apps. I've tried editing gpio_keys.kl with APP_SWITCH, but that just gives me the old pre ICS style switcher.

[Q] Reppaping Menu Button

I would like to remap the capacitive menu button to the recent apps switcher (default long press of the home button)
and then remap the LONG press of the menu button to the menu function (I need the ability to use the menu button when within the stock samsung apps like messaging, because they use fixed layouts and their apps are designed without the menu overflow.)
also my question is would apps still detect the phone as having a hardware menu button? I would like to be able to have apps have the menu button and not rely on the hardware.
then maybe since I would no longer need the home button long press possibly remap that to kill the current app? (that is not as important but just a side note)
I have looked EVERYWHERE and can not find a viable way to do this on the stock rom. thanks
