[Q] ICS update on a rooted phone - what to do? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hullos all!
Being rather new to rooting (I rooted my old X10 Mini and my Xperia S), I am wondering about what to do and not to do when ICS rolls out in the near future.
Did a search on these forums and on google, but the answers I found left me with even more questions, so I turn to the Gurus here ;o)
Now to my questions: I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader - what should I do when the ICS update rolls out? - I have a few ideas about what to do (I've typed those under my questions), I just need verification from the Gurus ;o)
1) Will I need to backup all my data and apps? (I probably should just for safety).
2) Should I accept the update from Sony
(From what I've read, it's a big NO - I should wait until a dev releases a pre-rooted firmware and install that with fastboot).
3) If the update (whatever method I need to use) is successful, will I have to reinstall my apps again? What about my contacts/SMS/other data - will that be deleted?
4) Not really ICS-related: Can I use factory restore on a rooted phone?
(I don't think so, solution is to reinstall the pre-rooted firmware).

1) yes for safety nandroid backup. Back up apps with titanium backup just incase you need to wipe data on flashing new roms.
2) No
3) flash both phones with flashtool there will be ftf ics roms for both your phones. You will not lose apps and data if uncheck the option in flashtool
4) yes you can factory reset while rooted or unlocked
5)

Thanks a bunch!
I used a program named fastboot to flash the ROM .img file.
I guess that using Flashtool is the way to go - didn't know it existed until now ;o)

Just head over to the Android Development Forum.. There's a sticky thread called [TOOL/LT26] [UPDATE 09/04/2012] Flashtool version 0.6.9.1 - Windows / Linux. There you'll find download links and so on..

yeah thanks just need to register... (not pay) i use your 2.3.4 actually.. it give me ability to upgrade in .62 without loosing root... and now "bonus" PCC ask me to upgrade ICS centraleurope version... just all i need with a downgrade :d
Hi,
I have a xperia neo....with rooted stock firmware .62 and unlocked bootloader (testpoint method)...I have taken a nandroid backup of it
I just wanted to try out ics...so planning to update using PCcompanion
Before updating...i just want to know
1. whether it's possible to downgrade to gb through cwm nandroid restore? Do I need to flash the kernel for .62 after the nandroid restore ?
2. will root access be restored after the downgrade? Since .62 is cannot be rooted, I'll have to flash .42 to get root access
I don't want to start restoring all the installed apps...hence thinking of using nandroid backup against flashtool
heres a video on how to :
SIMPLEST WAY TO DOWNGRADE TO 2.3.4 factory firmware
...Hi, hope i can help you after i spent myself days looking to root or flash my device, with no luck. There is just 3 simple steps to follow and you are done. Trust me its working fine:
1. Go To: (http thing) i cant link as new user...//androidadvices.com/downgrade-sony-xperia-arc-official-gingerbread-23-firmware/2/ and download 2 files (flashtool and Xperia Arc S firmware package... works for xperia arc, arc s, pro, etc). This is the Gingerbread 2.3.4
2. Unzip, install and start (as admin) Flashtool, then COPY XPERIA ARC S FIRMWARE PACK (is a .ftf file) INTO Installed Flashtool, FIRMWARE Folder (PASTE inside), START FLASH, choose FLASHMODE, follow on screen steps.
P.S. When restart your phone in FLASHMODE: With the phone turned off, press and HOLD BACK button, while connect USB, next seconds, you'll get the GREEN Light(phone) and flashing begins.
3. ENJOY your new installed GINGERBREAD 2.3.4 Firmware
P.S. ...NO ROOT REQUIRED... ...and yes, i know there are more than 3 steps... so? still works great. GOOD LUCK

[Firmware] Xperia S - Stock SG-Generic - 6.1.A.2.45 {1257-6921}

I just packed up Android v4.0.4 (6.1.A.2.45) Generic Singapore to an FTF.
Download from: Here!
Filename: LT26i_6.1.A.2.45_SG_Generic_(1257-6921).ftf.7z

NO ROOT REQUIRED, NO BOOTLOADER UNLOCK REQUIRED, WILL NOT VOID WARRANTY
You can flash this without losing any data!
If you uncheck the "wipe userdata" box in Flashtool before flashing, you will not lose any data. You can convert from any customization to this one without any problems!
To flash this, follow the following steps:
For starters, make sure you have the latest Flashtool installed. If you have issues with Flashtool, make sure you also have PC Companion or Sony Update Service installed.
Download the .ftf file to your computer and place it in the Flashtool\Firmwares folder.
Open Flashtool and click the lightning bolt in the menu bar.
Select Flashmode and click OK
Select the right firmware in the left column (LT26i_6.1.A.2.45_SG_Generic_(1257-6921).ftf).
Check or uncheck "Wipe User Data". If selected, all user data will be deleted. If you want to update or change customization without losing data, uncheck it.
Click OK and wait for the instruction to unplug the device, ...
Turn your phone OFF, and plug it in while keeping the volume down button pressed.
Follow the steps in the main window of Flashtool, wait until the flashing is done.

These are region specific generic versions. Hence the built in apps will be less or more depending on some regions. Don't expect any changes in the system itself.
Wifi restored
I just want to add that I installed the Doom Kernel and messed up my Wifi. Tried the restore options and it didn't work. (maybe I did something wrong).
Anyway restoring with this method and firmware fixed the Wifi issues.
Additionally device was successfully rooted using Bin4ry_v11. (v14 doesn't work well with this phone in my opinion)
Thanks again LiveSquare. I've been at it for 5 hrs now and your post saved me.

You don't need root.
Just download flashtool, and the corresponding .ftf firmware file for your device.

Sent from my LT22i using xda app-developers app
It's not useless at all, but it's useless here. For a custom Rom you need to unlock boot loader which will definitely void warranty. Be safe man.

download an official jb firmware for your phone! download flashtool! enable usb debugging and connect your phone to the pc! Then choose the file you have downloaded and flash it!
You can also use SUS (Sony Update Service)......BTW did you use pcc to install it or downloaded it OTA.....

Slight correction needed IMO: You need to unlock your BL only when your CUSTOM ROM needs a CUSTOM KERNEL.
He can try to repair phone with pcc or he can unlock bootloader and install STOCK or Custom Rom, who says that flashtool is only for custom roms , With unlocked boot loader he will void warranty.. yes.. a part that... he can lock the bootloader again..and I have not seen written anywhere in his topic question that he does not want to lose warranty... so mine it was just a suggestion... not an Obligation
Take care friend

anyways. My xperia P hasn't got any official update. and i am also waitng for official update rather than a manual update, I know the flashtool method is not a risky one but still you may get some problems in using jellybean. Becase the generic version and your S.I version would not be the same. my S.I = 1261-4989 ,
I have heard many bugs in jellybean, Album issue, white screen in contact and messaging, blutooth broblem, fast drain battery prob, slow charging, lagging, etc i wants to know, are these bugs are real or just a wrong imagination. Thanks
I havent seen any bugs so far for JB on xGO. And it performs quite nicely without having to edit build.prop or run init.d scripts. I'm using CE ftf.

Go to settings>apps>all> click the app and on the top right u will see an option ''disable'' , disable the preinstalled apps which u don't use like ''Google +,email, gmail, talk,fb,office suite, top contacts, retail demo, recommender, maps ,Google chrome, exchange services'' restart ur phone and then use..... I know about the update you mentioned, but there seems to be even more new then that 6.1.1.b1.100. In any case how can i upgrade to those, be it new or older firmware? To get a real lag reduction and battery drain issue, I suggest you to root atleast (without unlocking your boot loader which does not void your warranty).
For that you need flashtools from there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933985
However, B.1.100 is slightly better than the previous version
So to try that, flash it with flashtools, you can find the download link here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974430
You do not require root to flash Sony stock ROMs.
Another better alternative is to flash custom ROMs for locked bootloader,
My personal suggest, go for SlimCM ROM, pretty stable and snappier.

So in essence i can flash newest stock B.1.100 without root, and not losing the waranty (subquestion only unlocking the bootloader voids waranty, but root no? I am asking this cos i do seem to remember but i might be wrong that root can also void it, and i wanna be sure . But if i decide to go for custom ROM which you suggested do i need root for that? With root i can remove loads of stuff which i cannot do now, so thats why the lag is much lesser?

Yes you can attain root access without unlocking your boot loader.
Use flashtool method or Bin4ry's method.
Again yes, you can flash SONY STOCK fw using flashtools (without root or unlocking) in flashmode (just keep in mind to "exclude TA")
Once you are rooted you can install apps such as greenify that really helps to last the battery longer.
Also you could remove the bloatware and other useless apps.
Or you even you can make choices to install Custom ROMs for locked bootloaders. Just check the development section.
This is my personal suggest: SlimCM ROM.
Though its CM9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143750
See the instructions for locked boot loaders.
Sent from my Xperia U using xda app-developers app
To root fw C.1.0 or any later versions, you need to
-flash the kernel alone of B.1.0.
-follow root procedure by flashtool or Bin4ry method.
-Then flash back the corresponding kernel of the ROM.
Done
Sent from my Xperia U using xda app-developers app
Ty for all the suggestions. I rly appreciate it. Think i will go for what u suggested first, slimCM. I checked it and it looks nice.. Althou some things are not so clear to me. In both instructions, for slimCM and in patch for locked bootloader it says wipe data or factory reset in recovery. What is recovery? And it also mentions to do the backup of my current ROM. How shall i do that. Wipe data and factory reset means all data gone from phone so i should backup at least photos, music and sms-es to my pc or some app.

That's where you can find recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020897
CWM recovery is required to flash custom ROMs or MODs etc.
You can find the wipe data, cache options in the recovery menu. Just back up your contacts, messages and things.
Nothing from SD card will be lost.
Do carefully patch the ROM as per the instructions to make it into locked bootloader.
Copy that zip file in SD card and enter CWM recovery
-flash ROM
Done !

heyyy
U can root ur device with out touching bootloader dats pretty easier....
but remember after rooting u need to install cwm recovery bcz its used to flash custom roms and rem u can also take take backup of ur entire rom
if anything goes wrong during flashing custom u can easily restore ur device to normal..... by using back up....
flash b.1.10 rom bcz it can be easily rooted by using flashtool......
So finally the process is root first, second recovery and finally flashing rom of ur choice.....
There are so many ROMS in dev section for locked bootloader......
njoyyyyyyyyy............
I ll attach CWM recovery files download and extract.... In the extract folder double click install(.bat file) make sure device connected with debugging mode on..... accept all superuser request on device........aft rooting u ll get super user app in apptry
PM if any difficulty

Hello. This is my first post here so forgive me if i done or post it wrong.
In short i have updated phone from gb 6.0.B.1.564 to Ics 6.1.1.C.1.0 via pcc and it is from then acting very poorly in comparison to before, very laggy and slow in general. What id like to know now is what is best to do? I have heard there is some new latest firmware released for xu ics, is it possible for me to get that, and is it improved a bit performance? If nothing, can someone pls point me how to downgrade back to gb, or maybe suggest something else? Just so you know, my phone is not rooted and it has locked bootloader.
Thank you all in advance

So i have backed up all the data (music, photos etc) on the pc. Tomorrow i will get on doing what you guys suggested. So to get it all confirmed, first do the root with flashtool, checkin superuser and rootme, and then i will be rooted. Then cwm recovery install, then applying the patch for locked bootloader for slimCM ROM, then i go back in cwm, make backup of current ROM and then wipe data, and then flash the rom.. That be the order? Is there any thing i should take special care of?

I had a little problems. It wouldnt let me install the flashtool drivers. Probably cos i was doing it on laptop on win8. Will try it at home on win7.

Remember install flashtool while your anti-virus is disable...!

I did that. But what i wanted to say i get error during the instalation of drivers. Flashtool alone was installed corectly.

It will be lot better if you try it with Win 7 as Win 8 + Flashtool drivers don't go well together as 8 allows only signed drivers to get installed.
Though there's a thread on how to install Flashtool drivers on win 8.

Here's the Rooting Process for you.
This Rooting guide applies to all FW versions above B.1.10. (i.e. B.1.54/C.1.0/B.1.75/B.1.189/B.1.100)
1) Open Flashtool.
2) Click the Flash icon.
3) Select Flash Mode. (Make sure USB Debugging is ON in your Mobile Settings before connecting to PC)
4) Select & Flash the B.1.10 kernel. Then Reboot.
5) Select the Un-Lock icon and choose your preferred SU app & proceed.
6) Follow the on-screen instructions.
7) Now you have rooted your device.
