[Q] So I lost my Note and At&t replaced it. But I found it ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I had my phone for a lil over a month . its was in perfect condition i had it in a case with a screen protector since i day i got it. then i lost it . i will admit i was a lil drunk when i lost it and for the life of me couldnt find it. So I reported it lost and my insurance replaced it. Well last night my girlfriend comes over and tell me look what i found in back of the couch. So now I have 2 Notes . I want to know it the Note I lost is still good will it work? can i sell it and not get introuble. I know what the right thing to do is. I just want to know if there are any other options.

Unlock the IME# and see if it'll take a different SIM card. If so, then just sell it as an unlocked note. Should bring you decent cash.
On second thought... don't. Um... it's rubbish, just mail it to me. I'll um... take... care... of it.

Unlock it and sell it.

How do I make it a poll. That would be cool.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do the same. Lol

you have seen the articles about the carriers getting together to track, lost, and stolen phones, right? The IME number is like a fingerprint. You use that one, or sell it, and they will find out, and probably find you. Be smart, and tell your insurance, or be stupid, and get nailed for fraud.

Sell it for a quick 500 have the phones lost or stolen will take any aim card trust. I i have connected phones I found with no problem just called at& the and told them I purchased on ebay and they got it going

That's paranoid. If they do find it, all they can do is track it to the person using it. Just sell it on craigslist at a random public meeting place and don't tell the buyer any personal info.

thought you could throw any sim in the phone and it work
when you report lost/stolen they block imei #'s or something?

Unlocked means you can use any sim card. AT&T does not block the IMEI# for whatever reason. I was reading a article about [email protected] being investigated for activating phone that have been reported stolen. I have had phones that i bought for really cheap from people who where kinda shady and im sure they where stolen and t-mobile & AT&T hooked them up with no questions asked.

maybe you should just return the phone to its rightful owner and tell them you paid a crack head 40$ for it and see if they give you your money back.
I know, I know, who would return $500 if they found it right? Wow, Maybe you should keep in mind that they can gps track the phone with wavesecure, and locate you. They can turn it on remotely, then when they say the phone is stolen, and possession is 9/10's of the law..........

Buying someone's stolen phone, wtf is your problem? It's disturbing that you work at a tmobile store (assuming you're being truthful). How stupid are you?
damn! what did the guy actually walk into your "tmobile" store and really sell you the phone right there flat out? wow. i guess stupid is AS stupid does
I think that was also dumb but there's still a way to wipe the phone. Just boot into recovery and wipe the phone or install a stock ron.

I don't know if this guy is legit or not but I hate to see guys like this helped. The phone is more than likely stolen & could be yours or mine w/ personal & or business texts, emails, & pictures. Maybe it isn't stolen but I doubt an "Authorized Dealer" would (a.) buy a 1 week old phone for $40 (b.) Buy it before checking to see if it worked (c.)Would have no other escalation option other than XDA.
If I'm wrong fugg him and he should search a little, then ask for help. If I'm right well just plain old fugg him maybe he can steal the directions with the phone next time.
yeah an even better way to introduce yourself to the community... did you make this acct just to ask that question? so you dont have to look like a douche on your real name? Call customer care and see what they say you should do...
You knowingly purchased a stolen phone? Not to mention its $500. Depending on your state you could be looking at some jail time. The right thing to do is try and look up the rightful owner of the phone and return it to them. And the $40 is lost due to your own stupidity.
@youneek Why would you help a person who obviously purchased a stolen phone?
I hope you work under some guy cause you should be fired. and on wavesecure there should be the owners number on it. CALL HIM UP foo and return his phone.
I really hope the phone isn't rooted already and I also hope this guy can't figure out how to wipe the phone.........really I hope no one here helps this guy steal a phone!
A moderator should get his IP and hand it over to the cops...
Ugh... it's not hard to get around but dude, you probably bought a stolen phone. Why not call TMO and give them IMEI and let them help you track down the rightful owner? If you are indeed a TMO authorized reseller they shouldn't have a problem helping you do that. Call it your good deed for the day.
The only good to come from this thread is me realizing that I don't have a blackberry anymore and so need something like wavesecure, which apparently works in case some dumb piece of !&$# steals my phone. Hopefully no smart piece of !&$# ever steals it lol.
Shame on you, for purchasing a stolen phone. Hopeully, the owner will manage to get a lock in on your location and track you down.

Hiding water damage for warranty - bleach?

I was planning on bring my SGS2 to the repair center, since its been giving me so much trouble lately, unfortunatley i dropped it in water before i could get there
As far as i can see there are 2 water indicators on the phone - on the phone itself to the right of the battery, and also one on the battery.
I actually used a Q-tip and bleach and both are no longer red, but are there any more anywhere else on the phone? And are there any other ways they will be able to tell it has water damage?
Are you really asking the forum for help in scamming AT&T for you? Take responsibility for yourself.

O god forbid someone scam ATT!!!!!!:crying: We should all be so careful to treat this honest and ethical company with nothing but respect. They get what they give after all.
Ive been paying for insurance for 2 or 3 years now, have never made a claim, and they raise the deductible for a claim to 200 dollars? Screw you ATT. The phone was faulty before it got water in it. Im saving someone else the trouble of getting this device refurbed, because you know ATT would just repackage this phone and give it to some poor SOB.
Whether AT&T is an evil company or not is not the issue. This is not the forum to be asking for help to scam them or anyone else.

Hey genius, it's only a scam if by flashing a ROM you mess the phone up and then try to get AT$T to replace it. What you are trying to do is get AT$T to pay for your clumsiness. Fine, go right ahead and try, but trying to enlist people in here to be your accomplice in that scam is against the forum rules. This thread is destined to be closed.
Don't even try it. They check more than the indicators. The check corrosion on solder points etc......... they will know.

There is a distinct and significant difference between returning software to stock to enable a user to return the phone for hardware defects that were not caused by the user (failed usb ports, power buttons, etc.) and trying to return a device that was physically damaged by careless use/abuse. The reason deductibles go up is because of this type of behavior.

like i said the phone was failing before it got water damaged. Disagree with you on the second reason. the deductible went up because of ATT's greed. I can outright buy this phone off contract for not much more than their deductible, plus what i pay every month - it doesnt make any sense.

Sansung warranty information for Galaxy Note

Hi I purchsed a galaxy note from ebay and the screen is dead on it. The phone has warranty on it. I bought the device from the seller and he told he has purchased this device in June 2012. Since I purchased this device, can I call samsung service and say the screen is dead. No water damage or flash. It has stock ROM. I am thinking this is a mother board issue. Will I be able to say this device is owned by me and get a free replacement?Do I need to produce the bill or any other information? Will samsung ask any other information?
Just call Samsung and tell them you are the second owner. The warranty is on the phone, not the owner.
Please don't post anything else on xda about this if you bought the phone with the goal of tricking Samsung (fraud).

I don't want to do any fraud. But want to know if samsung asks for any sales receipt or comparable proof of sale showing the original date of purchase.
I think you're pretty safe claiming the warranty, because this model isn't a year old yet. Just call Samsung repair center. You can google that. Several members have said it was quick and painless.

I can see where it might sound like he was accusing people of fraud, but
to me I think his point is valid in that he was being helpful but making sure everything was on the up and up. I did read the OP in such a way that it sounds like it was purchased knowing the screen was bad because if I had got a note with a dead screen from eBay, assuming it was unknown to me when I purchased it, I'd probably take it up with the seller. But if the OP bought it full well knowing the screen was bad in the hopes in getting Samsung to fix it, it could seem a little fishy. Just my take on it.

If your under warranty you could get ahold of Samsung and see about sending it in for repair. Turn around time is roughly 3 weeks. I doubt that a "jig" is going to work (from my previous experience.) You could send it out to get it JTAG repaired. Which is more probably what your thinking of. Either way your looking at between a couple days to a couple weeks to get it fixed.
If your sending it in to Samsung, you could tell them that you were installing an app, and then the phone turned off and wouldn't turn on or anything.
You need to pay up for the mistake and get jtag. It's going to cost you about 50 bucks. Sending it to Samsung is considered fraud since this is not a warranty issue but user error

I guess you ignored my advice to educate yourself. You're getting off cheap. Slow down.
thanks guys, I've ordered a repair service with Josh Groce at MTV as mentioned in posts above, paid $50 through Google Wallet (you can also pay through Paypal but they are evil), now I just need to find a postal office near me.
Just to make it clear, I never said I was going to return it to Samsung for warranty repair. I didn't know Sammy offered a 2-year warranty on their consumer mobile products, you learn new things everyday especially on XDA!!! (sarcasm)
It shows there are two kinds of people here: one group wants to really help people in need to the greatest extent including legal and possibly illegal means, the other group just wants to sit on their asses and go "I told you so, you should be more careful and do research first"
I did my basic research, including asking newb questions on xda. Based on what you guys said, I bought an i717 instead of the t-mobile version. Because I was carrying out a research, I had dozens of tabs on open on Firefox, and that's a contributing factor as to why I mistakenly flashed an international kernel on my at&t note.
Before you jump in, fingers waggin, saying useless things like "do search," please realize that an older device like the original note can have a long and sordid history of development. I was overwhelmed by the variety of "guides" and "howtos" and questions and answers when I first started reading about the Samsung Galaxy Note. Please be kind to semi-newbs like me, we are the silent majority here. (ranting)
One more rant before I go back to sleep (it's 6:25am here in rainy Southern California),
kernel developers should NOT be allowed to name their kernels "UNIVERSAL" I was suckered in to flash a "UNIVERSAL" kernel on my ATT Note I717. That UNIVERSAL kernel was only for International Note N7000.
I know, I should've known better. Well, a lesson learned, and as someone said above, it only cost $50.
If you are referring to me in your rant, I never even referred to you in my post. I pointed out that the posted suggestion above to return to Samsung for warranty was not only fraud .. But also against xda rules to be talking about. As for the post I agreed with ... If you've been reading around here lately you know there has been a rash of "help I've bricked my phone"threads lately. Some were due to a bad link to a rom outside xda. For some reason ... a lot of users here think that Samsung should replace under warranty for their mistakes. It's not the case. Simple fact is ... once you root the phone you have no warranty. That said, I believe that there is a grey area ... a know hardware failure ..I think it is fine to revert to stock to warranty.
I'm glad you've worked you issue out and wish you luck in the future. But instead of going on a rant to people who you may need help from in the future ... ... Just saying .. don't burn any bridges.
Have a good weekend
Edit:
In rereading ... I really don't think anyone was that harsh. Some of these have gotten quite ugly.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Allright, got some needed sleep, got up and went to the post office to mail off my bricked Note to [email protected] in Texas. Priority mail to Texas from Southern Cal cost about $6 plus insurance cost $4, so all told about U$10 to mail my Note (sans batt, back cover, stylus, sim card and sdcard). According to the MobileTechVideo site, it will take about 4 business for Josh to repair it. So I'm looking at about 2 weeks before I can get mine back. Kinda wishing that I had sprung for express service for another $15-20.
I'm now regretting the rants I spewed out earlier. However, I believe I made a couple of valid observations. I am grateful to those who pointed out the jtag repair, specifically sending it for repair to mobiletechvideo. I know I can attempt the repair myself but for $50 it's well worth it for me to let a seasoned pro handle it.
One of my pet peeves is the "I am holier than you" attitude, you know the kind who goes around saying "I told you to research, make a backup nandroid, do md5 hash check on ALL your downloads, etc..." You know what, things have happened and now you're holding a brick in your hand due to whatever you did. No sense in kicking a man when he's down. How can you call it a help? And to those of you who clicked on the Thanks button to these kind of people, you know who you are, Fie on You!!!
To Bubbajoe,
Cool, I didn't mean to refer you or anyone else in my regrettable rants in my previous posts. I thought I needed to clarify that I never thought sending my bricked note to Samsung for warranty repair was an option. Thanks for pointing out that it would've constituted a fraud, had I done it. Having said that, now that the cat is out of the bag, I now know I have an option. I am sure other people who read this thread have now seen the option of sending it back to Samsung for repair under warranty. I don't want to judge people, what they do with their stuff is their private matter, I can only hope that you would do the right thing. I believe in karma, what goes around, comes around. If you gloat over other people's misfortune, your turn will come.
It seemed harsh to me. I was down and instead of helping me get up, some people were taunting and kicking me: "I told you so," "you didn't take my advice," "why didn't you read", etc, etc, etc... Do you call these advice "help" that deserved to be thanked???
From just reading the title your gonna need jtag. Its like $50-$60

Sir if your rant was directed at me I never said you were implying you were going to send it to samsung. I was only pointing out that that advice that someone else mentioned was not a good idea.
I am glad that you got in touch with mobiletechvideos to get it repaired. He has helped many people out with hard bricks around here. As for doing the repair yourself you need a riff box to do jtag and the cost of that is a lot more than what you ended up paying for Josh to do the service.
Hope to see you back up in running around here soon.

Agreed. And returning it for warranty should not even be suggested here on xda. Once rooted the warranty is void.

That statement bothers me considering they posted an article regarding rooting in July.

You saying they should make a retraction?
He flashed a kernel for a completely different phone. You don't need root privileges to do that. So, no, this doesn't contradict the xda position.
Buy a new gasoline fueled car, then go and put diesel fuel in it and destroy the engine. No dealer will cover that error under a warranty. You pay for your mistake and learn to double check next time.
Why is this thread still running? The op has his issue handled. Now it's just turning into a debate thread.

That's debatable
We've never had a debate thread.
Yeh....
We certainly don't need another heated thread.
Losing a great developer this week should be enough anger to tide us over don't you think ?
OP ....we have great people here, always doing their best to give back.
And once again, they "ALL" did ....IMHO ....
Bricking sucks, but thank goodness we have an out, unlike the old days where a guy just throws the phone in the trash and starts over.
Those guys down south do a fantastic job keeping us fixed up and going again.
It'll come back running like new...
Happy flashing ....g

While I highly respect Adam's opinion .. If you look at the attached post, you can see the statement copied directly from the Samsung website. Adam may be right ... Maybe not... But since it's Samsung we would be dealing with .. I would say the statement I made holds true. I'm not willing to fight my way to the supreme court to find out. If you are .. Let me know how it turns out. Also if you can gain root privileges without modifying or altering the electric circuitry .. Let me know that as well. Here's the link:

As far as xda .. If the official opinion is that rooting doesn't void the warranty .. I have to wonder ... If we do have a rooted user .. Say with a hardware issue that wants to claim warranty .. why are we not seeing everyone post that it's no problem .. Just send it back rooted. We see responses on how to unroot to claim warranty. Why bother? Why aren't the mods closing these threads stating that the unrooting is not needed? Additionally if I'm denied warranty, I'd venture to say that xda would not replace my phone or help me hire an attorney to fright Samsung.

Mods, please lock this thread, close it, or do whatever you have to do to stop people from posting to it anymore. It has degenerated into something that's so far removed from the original intent of the OP, namely me. The issue has been handled. No more replies should be accepted. Thank you!
