rooting brand new tf201 on .21 - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey, I am posting this thread here because XDA says I'm to 'new' to post in the dev section which i find completely stupid that I have to have 10+ bs post before i can post in the dev thread even though i have years of android and ios experience the fact that I chose not to share every last detail on this forum is now effecting me when I have minor questions about my new device. Anyway straight to the point I have a new tf201 on .21 and i want to root it just like i do all my other devices.....is there a way/program to do this yet? If so please provide a link or instructions on how to go about doing so.....Thank You in advance and sorry for the rant

not possible yet!

If you're ok with voiding your waranty, you can unlock the bootloader and flash a custom pre-rooted ROM.

It's to stop exactly what you are trying to do. If you read the big sticky in Dev Section that says "READ ME 1st" you would have seen this.
"If any mod, including myself, continue to find new threads about topics that have threads already existing or [Q] questions in the development forums!
The thread will be locked with no notice and/or up to a temp BAN!!."
Not having a go, just explaining

Not to bash the OP, but I spent many hours if not days researching how to root my prime .21, so my question to you is why should someone else post links, do the research for you?
I started with what the benefits, and negatives would be by rooting my prime. That took at least a day, then I researched the likely hood of me bricking my prime.
After I found "good cause" to root it, only then did I find a solution.....But nobody did this for me.
Let me know how it works for you to disrespect the rules up front, then ask for help to root your prime.
Back to doing the work for you....
Unlock ithttp://transformerprimeroot.com/tra...ow-to-unlock-bootloader-on-transformer-prime/
Flash CWM recoveryhttp://transformerprimeroot.com/tra...orkmod-recovery-5-8-2-0-on-transformer-prime/
Now flash a pre rooted ROM...(I trust you can find that yourself, or do I need to tell you which rom to install)

first downgrade firmware to .15 and then root
You can downgrade your firmware to .15 and then root it
Use Voodoo rootkeeper and upgrade to .21
Pm me if you need any help

Hey Sam,
Is there any disadvantage to unlocking and installing a custom rom vs downgrading and rooting then upgrading?
or does the voodoo rootkeeper not unlock the device so warranty still intact?
Thanks
K

to downgrade do you need to unlock?

can you even downgrade with asus blob?
i thought it'll just tell you, you have the latest firmware and can't excute the firmware(.15) you want it to do
correct me if i'm wrong, =D
please tell me that i'm wrong as i needed to send my tab to RMA
so no more root ;-;

My understanding is you can't downgrade the firmware without unlocking. So for those of us who are on .21 who want root without unlocking it isn't currently possible. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No need to unlock
You just need to download .15 firmware and rename it as .21 and put in on sdcard
follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492887
One downloaded root and keep root using voodoo rootkeepr...do not unlock
and dont try this method on unlocked prime, it will brick

From the post you're referring to:
Requirements: root access
Sorry but don't think your method's gonna work.

Correct, and this is confirmed by several users in that thread as well. Still need to wait for another way to root .21.

So if I have a new prime and it has .15 and I want root I should do using Viper and then install rootkeeper and then update to .21 ?

Thanks for the quick reply, so If I want to unroot I can use Viper too and will i be back to stock if I wanted to return? and I saw in the viper post about recovery is that reversible if I do a firmware reset?
EDIT: just worked out you can only install CWM after unlocking so I'm not going to that stage just yet and once unlocked there is no going back so makes the recovery restore question obsolete.

No patience?? theres only one way
Whats the big deal about unlocking....
If you want your device rooted, unlock...install cwm.....flash prerooted rom....
Why so many people trying strange methods, i dont understand.
You would rather risk BRICKing your device trying to bypass the UNLOCK??
I just thinks people are odd, why not just unlock to get a root.....
or
WAIT till a root method is developed for .21....

Not everyone wants to unlock.. perfectly fine here using stock rom instead of hacked roms keep in mind if you do unlock instead of wait for a new exploit you WILL lose the ability to OTA (so then theres no need for rootkeeper obviously), so all your future updates youll have to do yourself thru CWM, not to mention your warranty

actually i dont think this is true, to downgrade you need root access... you have to run console as SU and enter some commands, unless you know a way to do it without root in which case PLEASE share!
Also, OP couldnt you find that theres no root yet just by hitting the search button? Seriously, once theres a root for .21 it will be posted everywhere...

[Q] 9.4.2.21 update???

I am new to the Prime forum, however, I am not new to Android Devices or XDA. I currently have an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D on Sprint and I know it is a big no, no to take an OTA with phones.
However, after doing a bit of reading on this forum, I discovered that is actually WORSE to accept the OTA on this tablet (results in hard-brick).
Now, my question is will someone be releasing a fully STOCK ROM based on the 9.4.2.21 update with nothing removed or added (except possibly SU and Busybox). I haven't seen any mention of this on the forums which is why I am asking. Excited to get the update but don't want to brick it.
Will donate big to the first person who makes a fully stock ROM with this update.....
OTA will not brick your tablet. OTA updates are fine. Unless you have unlocked the boot loader. If you are rooted still not a problem, just backup root first. And if it does hard brick and you didn't screw it up, RMA.
Apparently this forum is full of people with a little bit of knowledge and a lot of squeaky wheels.
BTW thanks for the cash incentive for a stock rom, big spender.
^What he said.
OTA updates are perfectly safe, I've done 3 already!
Just be sure to root before you update to .21 and use OTA Rootkeeper to keep root after you update
Goodluck!

Virtuous ROM is pretty much totally stock with a few tweaks here and there. Nothing major though. Also the installer that Virtuous team are using allows you to have 3 different installation experiences.
FULL: Which removes nothing whatsoever from the stock ROM
TYPICAL: Which removes a few ASUS apps that most people probably do not use or miss.
MINIMAL (I think that it what is't called): Which removes almost all ASUS apps.
You should give it a try.

The "add space" feature is missing from the Android keyboard. As anyone else noticed this. I actually liked the feature as it made typing faster.

As Doktaphex has said you can use the Virtuous ROM.

Also I'm waiting for an exploit to root my TFP. I'm just not willing to bork my warranty by unlocking the bootloader yet.

Would like to help to find a root exploit for latest Android update

So, I finally got my Transformer Prime TF201 after long waiting.
Sadly I am not able to root it due the latest update from Asus (.21).
Since my tablet is unlocked/virgin, I would like to offer my help finding a new way to gain root.
Since I am new, I am not allowed to post on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526487, so if somebody could let them know, that would be great.
I have quite a lot of experience with Linux administration/configuration and software development.
So do you have a new exploit?
Do you have a working proof of concept?
If any of the answers are No to above, dont bother, everyone else is in the same boat.
Still waiting for the exploit. If you have found it, I think you can discuss or PM to Mod to post into the DEV forum.

I have a virgin Transformer Prime and wanted to offer my help in the hope it might be helpful. Reading many threads here about it I got the impression that most of the devs do not have anymore an unlocked device.
Clearly I do not want to unlock it right now. But am willing to test/try out experimental stuff.
I read here very recently, by a dev I recall, that since the unlocking tool is available and once unlocked you can get root, you have that option. They continued saying no dev wants to burn an exploit just to have it shut next update. You have to pay to play, meaning sacrifice support from Asus by unlocking.
I tried to find the post and supply a link to reference but failed on my mobile to find it.

This tool was only made to make it easier for everyone to root. I did not come up with the root methods, I just made the tool based on an existing root method. What people need to understand is that, from a dev perspective, with an unlock available it really doesn't make sense for a dev to work on root for this tablet for a few reasons...
1 reason is that Asus seems to be the most frequent updater of any OEM I've ever seen. There is no doubt that they read how we got root and intentionally fix it in the next update or two. This leads to problem number 2... using a root exploit that gets fixed and then becomes known and leads to other OEMs patching and making future devices harder to root.
I understand that people may think "oh well, burn a root exploit, we just want root!" Sorry, devs aren't going to think of it that way when you have an unlocking method. That's just that way it is. Honestly, don't ever expect root on .21 because it may never happen.

And a similar statement prior to that one.
-viperboy- said:
I've said this before but I'm not sure if you'll ever see a root for it because you can unlock. No one wants to work on a solution that is going to get blocked in the next update and burn through an exploit. Unfortunately, you have to pay to play. If you want root right now, you need to unlock the bootloader.

But aren't they android exploits, not Asus? Your comment doesn't make any sense to me. If an exploit is released, it will be for specific version(s) of android. Even if ASUS patches it, the exploit is still IN android. Nothing is 'burned' until Google patches it.
My comment is only based on the quotes provided by someone who I assume knows volumes more than I. That means I know little but try to help, by posting, when I feel I can help.

I suggest we set up a bounty for root. I would donate a bit to the one successful in rooting the latest update. Anybody else in???
Well, I can explain you why I think I NEED root access:
I have a Nokia N9 as mobile phone. It seems only to be able to provide Ad-hoc wifi tethering. Now, as I understand, Ad-hoc tethering got removed from Android 4, and the only way to get is back is by tools which use root access.
Without internet connectivity my Prime is worth only half
But since I only have it a few days, I do not want to void 24 months of warranty just because Google dectates it.
Please proof me wrong if there is another solution. I also tried Bluetooth DUN, but the phone seems only to provide OPP . Also USB networking seems not to be supported by the Prime.
Secondly, I WOULD LIKE to have root because there are many cool and useful tools which need root.
I am a Linux user for many years and feel very confotable in the command line.
Having a Linux device but not having the root privileges over it is just a shame.
I am not demanding for a rooting tool. I am at home in the Linux system, so any cryptic instuctions would be enough for me.
I also would pay for a working tool/instructions!

What?
Update to .21 and try again with that tether... Don't forget to backup su.
I have already the .21 build, else I would have root by now
But I now seem to have successed!
When I use the JoikiSpot on my N9 with no encryption, it seems not to work. The Prime always onlay sais "saved". Now I tried it with WEP128. This is almost a useless encryption, but now the Prime is able to connect to the internet.
So I am very happy right now
As a site note: with an iPhone 4 as tethering device, it works also fine without any encryption.
Not sure if this option can work for you like it does on my LG Revolution, but get WiFi Tether and set the profile to LG Optimus and SoftAP. My (rooted) Revo then acts as an AP, not AdHoc.

The N9 and N950 (which I use) are not Android based, but Maemo/MeeGo. Thats a great Linux based Operating system for tablets/phones. Sadly Nokia and Intel droped it, so it has no future. How ever for me its the right thing, because I now have a Linux based mobile phone with root rights with which I can do almost what ever I want.
Sadly JoikuSpot does not provide many options for tethering settings.
i dont know if the guys over at androidforums can help since they dont have a prime. they rooed our samsung prevails tho and one of them ported cm7 and cm9. im not sure if they are willing to help tho.
I don't know if it would work, but OTA rootkeeper is able to keep root and bring it back after updates : I have a prime rooted after update with it while still locked - for now. Anyway, my point is rootkeeper seems to backup some files and then restore them after the ota update. Would it not be possible to find what these files are and mount a script or instructions for anyone having .21 unrooted prime ? People could simply download OTA Rootkeeper, get those files, put them back in their proper place in the prime's folders and then restore and be done with it.

[Q] Root for JB v10.4.2.15

I finally upgraded from ICS v9.4.2.28 to JB 10.4.2.15 US stock.
I rooted my ICS but lost it after the upgrade.
I'll appreciate help with a simple root process or tool (similar to One-click Root for Asus I used with ICS)
Please note that my bootloader is not unloacked
if you look around you'll see that there aren't any rooting solutions for JB, not yet.... My thread is right above your asking about kinda the same thing...

No worries.
The youtube vid you're referring to demands unlocking it. Keep in mind in doing so your warranty for all intents and purposes is out the window...
But in short the only way to root is to unlock and set up custom firmware...

best way to root on 4.1.1??

hey guys, I flashed JB JRO03C 10.4.2.15 (US) Stock Deodexed + Mods [Unlocked BL], and like an idiot i rushed through it and never even read the part about having to separately flash superuser....i know, I'm an idiot. Thank you. well anyways, I'm thinking i need to just re-root all over again? Unless there is a better way to get superuser back? anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. My question is, is if i have to re root, then what is the easiest way to root with 4.1.1? thanks in advance
anyone?
Me too. I was rooted and had Voodoo installed but after 4.1 I lost it all. Not even partial.
Currently no way to root once on JB, not without unlocking; which voids your warrantee. Can't downgrade back to ICS either to root.

Unfortunately there is no way so far to root JB. (I know. Is this the future of Android? No root? No unlocked bootloaders? That is a discussion for another day.)
But... If you were rooted before and used Voodoo Root Keeper, there may still be hope. Check out this thread. As I have posted before, try and follow the conversation between thenrz and myself starting here and see if this helps.
Hopefully you have a copy of the su binary lurking on your Prime. With that you can, with luck, restore root. Read the conversation a few times to get the jest. I'm sure most of you are smart enough to read between the lines to get it figured out.

[Q] Updated to Lollipop.. bad idea.. Is there a root available?

Mistakes were made but a lesson was deff. learned.
Just started reading up on rooting and the benefits seem great, especially on this Verizon phone.
I'm wondering if there's currently a root available (guessing not or this forum would be all over it.)
Has any site/user from here stated someone working on one? Would be awesome to know.
New to rooting, hope to become more familiar, any insight would be cool! Thanks
If you take the OC1 update there is no root for it.
However if you have root there are ways post on here to keep it and get OC1.

Yeah I took the update... Does that mean I'll never be able to root... ever, or I just have to wait for a root to come out for the version?
Was not rooted before this.
Currently there is no way to root. There's no way to know if anyone will find a way to do it or to downgrade in order to. I'm sure some are working on it, but you just have to wait to see what happens.
