[Q] (Code question) Need to figure out a way for my widget to update it's icon. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Forgive me if I need to post this elsewhere but the searches I have done have come up empty.
I'm pretty new to Java and Android development. So I'm sure this is an easy fix. But I could use some help.
The short version is I need to figure out a way for my widget to monitor the silent mode status. And would like to know what monitor's the home screen usage in android system.
The long version is this. The widget is pretty simple it just toggles the silent mode. (Hey we all have to start somewhere.) The problem is it's designed to update the icon to reflect the silent mode status, but the code triggers through a click action. See the problem? Yep silent mode can be toggled in many different ways. Thus what I need is an efficient way to monitor the silent mode status. My current idea is to have it run a simple check whenever the "home" or "back" buttons are pressed/whenever the home screen displays.
Problem is I don't know what SystemService checks that. I'm not really looking for an "ok plug this code into..." I want to learn. I'm looking for what I need to call in so I can monitor when the user returns to the home screen. Or if anyone has another more simple fix I'm all ears.

Adding Voice Actions via Lock Screen to Galaxy Nexus (Verizon)

Either by ROM, App, or Rooting/Otherwise, is there a way to make the lock button have multiple functions on my Galaxy Nexus?
My goal is to be able to use Voice Actions from a locked phone (like in the car, for example).
I noticed some posts on editing hardware buttons, but that was neither for the Galaxy Nexus nor for a lock button.
Ideally, 2 quick clicks would pull up Voice Actions from a locked phone.
I guess if I could permanently have Voice Actions in the notifications section, I could drag down from a locked phone and accomplish the same thing. I use slide to unlock, so dragging down on notifications bar is still available.
Any suggestions? I have not rooted yet but would do so just for this functionality (I'm now a corporate tool so I try to hack as little as possible these days)...
I am really interested in getting this functionality, so please excuse my bump.
Here are the two solutions (possibly) I've found.
1. Bar Control would allow this functionality if we could choose the Voice Actions App.
2. Widget Locker (though I've seen review of it not working well on Galaxy Nex, any opinions there). Also, still need an actual app to choose.
Again, I'm reaching out to Android users to see if they've found any way of using the lock button to achieve this functionality, but I'd take anything right about now.
Voice Actions Automate Startup like Siri
Okay, apparently I will be using this thread to document how I get this working.
Looks like Tasker will be my best bet.
1. I need to figure out how to call up the true Voice Actions prompt (Voice input is provided via Tasker, but it's not doing what we need it to).
2. I need to come up with some valid gesture to summon this feature (Like a Shake = Unlock and then summons Voice Actions)
I will post results. Please, if anyone knows exactly how to get Voice Actions to open in ICS using Tasker, you'd be a godsend at this point. This is VERY important functionality, especially for users that are not to be using their phone and driving these days...
This is (a quick and dirty) way to get Voice Search (Voice Actions) from Lock Screen on the Galaxy Nexus.
I purchased WidgetLocker from Market. I then added the Google Search Widget to my lockscreen.
In the future, I'd like to see Tasker have access to the lock button - that way I could Long Press the Lock button (or double press, whatever) and have access to Voice Search.
If you want different Voice Search functionality, such as widgets, or using Bar Control to add it permanently to the notifications area, you'll need to have Root Access to your phone.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk
Rename to VoiceSearch.apk.backup
Go to Market and Download Google's Voice Search
Add Shortcuts, icons to your homescreen, whatever you want to do
Rename VoiceSearch.apk.backup back to VoiceSearch.apk
Reboot
This is the only way I've found to get VoiceSearch as an app choice again in menus like Tasker's, WidgetLocker, BarControl, etc. For some reason, it's no longer accessible by default in ICS.
This is by far not the cheapest or most integrated way of getting things done, but for $3.00 it was worth it for me.
Hope this helps all the GN owners out there
Integrating Tasker into this
Once WidgetLocker was purchased, I am able to use WidgetLocker to Unlock my phone through Tasker.
Used the above mentioned way of getting VoiceSearch available as an app via Tasker.
Used WidgetLocker's plugin for Tasker to unlock my phone when I shake it along with starting up Voice Search.
So now, in my car, I just one click my GN Lock button to wake phone, shake, speak...that's as good as it's gonna get for awhile.
Hope this helps
Simple solution - Eva for Android
I've had the trial version of EVA for a month. When it expires, I'm purchasing the full version. This is hands down the most advanced and exciting app for Android since Tasker. It is for Voice Control what Tasker was/is for utility control.
You can set Eva to continue running when your phone is locked and use a voice command to "wake her up" and give a command. Also even if my phone is locked, if I get a text message Eva will let me know I have an incoming message and ask me if I want to hear it (all while the screen is still off and phone still locked). If I reply yes, Eva will read the message to me, then ask if I want to reply. If I say no, that's the end and my screen is still off, phone still locked. If I say yes, Eva will unlock my phone automatically and open up the Eva app to take my dictation for the reply.
All of the above is based on my settings, but Eva can be programmed to handle incoming text several different ways. Eva really is the "tasker" of voice commands. I'd highly recommend at least checking out the free trial for a month. Like Tasker, there is a learning curve. Took me about the full month to learn all the command words, but once you do, it's amazing.
Also to make it even better, the developer does have tasker integration on his to do list. It may take a while, but if it can be integrated with tasker, then you could trigger any task you have created in tasker by voice which would be super sweet!
Anyway, check it out - hopefully it'll allow you to do everything you want.
anthdroid, thank you so much for sharing. i'm lucky to have found this thread. your workaround let me get my voice search action back. cheers!
hollywoodfrodo, thanks for the info on Eva. that sounds promising for sure! i just "discovered" tasker recently so i'm loving that. can't wait till my tec tiles come in!

[Q] Complete Noob To Android and Galaxy - Been Using LG Chocolate

Hey guys! I recently purchased my galaxy from Telus and I must say it's a lovely device. Just a few cons for me is that it's a bit big and the volume rocker button is pretty loose. Other than that everything is just perfect
I just have a few questions if people could take their spare time to help out
1) How do you disable data usage? I tried pulling down the notification bar but there is no data off/on switch, only wifi.
2) If say I have data and wifi simultaneity on, what will exactly happen? Will wifi take over and automatically shut off the data?
3) Is there a way to automatically stop the use of data by having a restriction set up so for example once I hit 980mb, I won't be able to use the data unless I override and make it possible to continue using it. (Is watchdog a perfect app for this?)
4) The wifi/data icon on the status bar, what does the orange arrow going down mean and the other arrow facing up? The arrow facing downwards for my wifi keeps blinking orange/hang and goes back to grey. (Does it mean there something downloading in the background?)
5) What are some ways to improve the battery life of the phone?
6) Is there a way to remove "ME" on the contact list?
7) When I charge the phone through my laptop, it doesn't heat up but through the wall, the charging brick is rather hot. Is this safe?
8) To open the back cover, do you just put your nail/finger tip through the back hole and just use brute force to rip it off or is there something else? I feel like I'm gonna break the cover or the little edge/dimples on the sides of the cover where it fits into the back :l
9) Is there any way to change the brightness through maybe the status bar (moving fingers from right to left increases brightness and vise versa for left to right?) or maybe through notification bar?
10) Also should I have the sync icon on at all times in the notification bar?
11) Also is samsung kies needed? Whats the benefit of having it?
12) Is Samsung Kies needed?
13) I really appreciate the help guys, and last not but least, what are some useful/"needed/essential" apps to help or make life easier for the phone?
This is my first smartphone as I've been using my old lg chocolate for some time now and it just incredible how diverse the android os is but at the same time confusing and stressful to add what and such. I have so many things I want to do with the phone atm but stressful to figure out what to do in order lol.
I'm planning on rooting the phone after I save the contacts to my google.
Thanks everyone!
A quick note, I would take your phone back to the store and get it replaced, your volume rocker should not be lose. I took mine back for the same reason and my new one is fine.
Sorry I didn't answer anything else but I can't see your post on the app, I will later on my laptop.

1. Go to Settings > Data Usage > Mobile Data switch should be at the top
2. Wifi takes priority as long as you are within range and connected to a wifi network. If you leave wifi on but there are no networks it will just default to Mobile Data.
3. Again under Settings > Data Usage > Check the "Set mobile data limit" box
4.Yeah when you are downloading or uploading packets of data the corresponding arrows lightup
5. Turn down brightness, data, gps, bluetooth when not in use
6. You can press and hold contact names to bring up a menu and delete that contact. I'm not sure whether it works on yourself I haven't tried it.
7. Should be fine
8. Yeah just pull back gently the cover shouldn't break
9. Custom roms may implement brightness toggles in the notification bar. search around there are probably apps/widgets that can do the same thing as well.
10. Only if you want to sync data. For example if its off but you keep mobile data on, widgets such as weather and facebook won't update until you do it manually, but you can still use the internet normally. This will save some battery life.
11. Are you on a Mac or PC? On a PC you probably don't need it. On a Mac by default your computer won't detect it so using Kies is probably the easiest way to transfer files.
12. See above.
13. If you plan on rooting your phone there are a lot of useful apps such as titanium backup, wifi tether, etc. You can do a lot of customization of the homescreen if you don't like the way it looks check out other "launchers" on the google play store such as Apex launcher or Go launcher. Also there are ton of different keyboard replacements if you don't like the stock keyboard. Popular ones inclue swiftkey and swype. Just go explore
Oh and don't forget the XDA App (Duh)

Thank you so much i'll have to check out the custom roms or the widgets for brightness and I'm not sure if the loose volume button is bad enough that later on it'll popout or something. One thing I notice about it is that if i lay my thumb on it, i can move it from side to side (towards the face and down) and because the button isn't separated into a + -, there seems to be a click sound even though i click the middle of the button. Last note is if I gently tap the volume button you'll hear a light click sound cause it's loose. I just want to make sure if anyone else has this problem or is theres really stiff? The power button and homebutton stay in place but the volume just feels weird , not to mention if you shake the phone you can hear that something is loose (the volume button)
EDIT: I forgot to add two other questions that someone could clarify:
1) I've read other threads about this too but I seem to be only getting one bar of wifi, and it's pretty slow for some reason. But when I go on 4g/lte it's amazingly fast - only problem is I won't be using the data network much. Any fix to this wifi issue? I've done the *#0011# and doesn't help at all.
2) Every time I enter the gallery it seems to detect all my pc connected to my wifi. Any to way to stop this? Because I use to be able to delete photos but now I can' because a computer icon replaced the delete button. Same goes for the music player, on the top left cornor theres a computer icon and if you click on it, it'll show change player

1. Depends how far you are from the router and how many walls are in your way. It could also be from interference from a neighbor's router. I would recommend downloading the app Wifi Analyzer. It will tell you which channel your router is on vs. all the other routers around you, and it will tell you the best channel to use (look for the screen with the star ratings) for your router.
2. I haven't used the gallery much, and I use Google Music instead of the stock player. I'll look into the gallery thing, though. Update: OK. So, when you press the Menu button on the main Gallery page, one of the options is to scan for nearby devices. You probably selected it to see what it did, and this is probably why it's showing all the other devices in your house. Wierd thing is, there is no way to disable it. The Gallery app doesn't seem to have a settings menu. What you can try is pressing menu, then View By, then selecting "Content in device". That should show only the things on the phone.
Also, if my volume buttons were making a rattling noise when I shook the phone, I would take the phone back for a replacement, especially if it bothered me. My volume buttons are solid.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy SIII Assistive light widget as an application

Hi there.
I'm trying to find the best way of LED flashlight activation and ended up with a tought it should be enabled via double home button press. So Wanam Xposed module allows me to choose which application should be started once I pressed Home twice. Ok.
Here is my problem - I used to use a Tasker task that involved TeslaLED plugin to trigger the flash. Then I found the Assistive light widget, which is a way faster in comparison with TeslaLED. It's virtually instant. But a widget is not the way I like to trigger the flash. It's just not convenient. I thought I found the solution when I found some japanese app called Widget to Shortcut, but it hangs during the widget analysis.
So I'm looking for a way to get an application that simply will be triggering the flash the way the Assistive Light does. Instantly. The best approach is to have the same codebase or activity or intent that implements it (not sure what term is correct here).
And yes, I already tried the hidden Settings activity that allows to use VolUp to enable the flashlight. But it seems not stable to me. First - it stops working if the phone in the deep sleep mode (at least, I guess it's the reason). So, if my phone is intact for a few minutes, I can't use VolUp to fire the light up. And other thing I worried about - I found that this hidden activity somehow prevents the phone from sleeping in certain conditions and that noticeably affected the uptime of my Galaxy SIII.
Plus, I read here that somebody said the same widget on S4 has a lower light level of LED and this was made intentionally. The guy was upset, but here I see the utility - is it possible to choose how bright the LED level could be, in particular for Samsung Galaxy SIII? That would be awesome if I could switch between light levels for a flashlight, just like in real hardware flashlights!
Does anybody knows an answer to either of my questions?
Thanks!
Regards,
Eugene

Custom rom for father with Alzheimers, where to begin?

My father has early onset Alzheimers and I need to create a rom that when the device is powered on all he sees is 3 buttons call, end call, and text which brings up the plain texting option. Call shows square photos of people and services..etc.. tap on one it calls that person. I Would also like to do things like change the power button so it cant fully shut down the phone with out a specific combination of buttons or a pattern. Where do I begin to learn how to do this? I would really like to learn to do this on my own.
Hi there. Sorry to hear about your father. I've had a couple members of my family suffer from this and it's difficult, to say the least. As far as what you are looking for, well, I'm not sure you need to go all in and make a custom rom for this. I think many of the things you are trying to do can be done with existing mods.
As far as the power button, you can look into using the Xposed Framework and the Xposed Additions module which allows you to customize the activity of the hardware buttons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/framework-xposed-rom-modding-modifying-t1574401
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xposed-additions-t2294274
For the buttons on screen for Call / End Call - Well, the Call with a link to favorite contacts with pictures is easily done with most launchers or a favorite contact widget. The End Call option though, I'm not so sure about. Reason being is that any time you're going to make a call, it's going to open the dialer app and the end button will be there. I can't really think of a way around that. I looked into adding a shortcut to that activity with Nova Launcher, but it's not an option available (though there are a dozen other shortcuts).
But with a launcher like Nova, you will have the ability to add / delete anything off the main screen besides what you want. You can lock the home screen so he can't inadvertently make changes to it and enable a gesture he wouldn't be likely to use to allow you to access the app drawer (like 2 fingers swipe up, etc). You can also use one of the variety of locking apps that will prevent access to any unwanted apps by requiring a password or PIN.
Ooh. Custom ROMs. A lot of work for such simple need. Maybe use Tasker instead? You can accomplish this with a scene and some profiles/tasks setup on stock ROM. Only disadvantage I see compared to making your own rom is long boot time. You can bypass everything in regards to Android UI just by making the scene fullscreen and disabling keyguard with a on-boot profile. That way, when he turns the screen back on, it goes right to your scene setup with no "slide-to-unlock" crap. I am very experienced in Tasker, so if you need any help, I can help you. I'd be willing to develop this for you, it would be about a half hour on my part
All the best,

Thanks for the suggestions, these are great places to start.

How to fix MiFavor

If you have any suggestions, add in comments and I'll update the OP. Going to try to keep this list as comprehensive as possible.
Ambient Display: Stock ambient display sucks, so I don't miss it here. But would be nice to get something similar to Moto's active notifications to make use of the amoled panel.
Smart power-save: What does it really do? Is it limiting CPU speed? Is it using a more conservative governor? I can't tell any difference (performance or battery) when it's on vs off.
Voiceprint: Completely useless. I bet not a single person uses this.
MyVoice: This would be MUCH more useful if you could trigger it without touching phone while screen was off. In its current form, the time it takes to unlock my phone, hold back, say my command, and wait for it to respond, I'd be better off just doing whatever I wanted it to do. Screen off voice commands are natively supported by Qualcomm, even when the phone is in Doze.
Gesture & Motion:
-Double tap to wake is very slow and doesn't work when phone has gone into Doze.
It also works in your pocket because there is no proximity sensor check. There needs to be.
-Shake flashlight: You really need to shake your phone violently now. So violently in fact that you will throw your phone more often than not trying to turn your flashlight on.
-Give us some kind of camera gesture when phone is off. Double tap power, hold volume button, shake phone, whatever.
Navigation Keys: Capacitive buttons should be optional. I like being able to swap which side the back button is on, but we should be able to customize long-presses.
Battery Percentage: Should be displayed inside the battery icon or replace it. Uses up a ton of space on the status bar.
Workaround: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kroegerama.android4batpercent
Holster Mode: Completely useless. This is a phone, not a fitbit. Keeping the phone screen on all the time to use as a pedometer will destroy your battery life.
Cast Screen: Why is this not a toggle in the notification shade? Why do I need to dig into the display settings to do this? You have a dual sim quick-toggle, but not a cast screen quick-toggle?
Sound: I really like that when I mute ringer, media volume also mutes. But when you unmute, it goes back to whatever it was at before, which can be a lot louder than you think. Android should tie all volumes except alarm volume together, but if nothing else, let us tie ringer and notification volume together.
Mute Schedule: Why did they remove stock 6.0's timed do not disturb functionality?
Charging Sounds: Should be able to turn off.
Apps: To disable stock calendar, clock, gallery, mifavor launcher, my voice, stock music app, and stock video app, you have to open "stock android launcher" and drag icons from the app drawer to top of screen. Why can't we just disable these same apps from settings --> apps?
Storage: Let us use adaptable storage!
Connect to PC: Does the "Install driver" option do anything? Have not found a computer that does not install driver automatically when MTP selected.
Lockscreen: Get rid of the bell!
Notification Shade: Editing toggles is nice, but let us add and remove toggles. Many of us don't use a 2nd sim card, so having 3 related toggles is a waste of space.
System UI Tuner: Holding the gear icon in the notification shade causes it to spin and settings to open, but System UI Tuner never appears in settings. If you're not going to let us use System UI Tuner, get rid of the toggle.
Stock Weather widget: I really like the widget, but does not scale when resizing. Also, does not open Google clock if stock clock is disabled when clicked. Oh well, back to Chronus.
Toolkit: Not all of these are very useful, but definitely interesting. If you want to create a home screen shortcut to any of these, open the toolkit app and long press whatever icon you like.
Recent Apps: clear button shouldn't cover up 50% of the currently open app. This will be solved in nougat, so probably not worth fixing, but if you're going to put a clear all button on this screen, but it near the top left or top right so it's harder to accidentally press.
Status Bar Color: When status bar turns dark, icons stay dark so you can't read anything. These should turn white.
Speaker Phone: If on speaker phone and screen times out, other person can no longer hear you until you toggle speakerphone off then back on, which means constantly touching your phone's screen so it doesn't time out.
Phone call Proximity Sensor: Doesn't work. If you turn the screen off and hold the phone up to your head, if the proximity sensor sees light, which it will because it's not centered, it will turn the screen BACK ON. With this and the bug above together, phone calls are a huge pain in the ass.
Dolby Atmos: This resets EQ settings very often. I can't figure out what causes it to reset to default, but the settings just never seem to stick.
Anyone have any more info on this?
Write Protection on Rooted phones: Rooted and still can't get adaway or titanium backup to work? Turns out there's an extra layer of write protection here that's not found in other phones. Why do we need this? Luckily, there's a simple fix: Plug phone into computer, load up adb, type "adb reboot disemmcwp" (source:http://androidforums.com/threads/zte-write-protection-for-zmax-and-other-zte-phones.1040331/)
Disable stock apps: in B20, you could disable several stock apps that did not allow you to disable them in settings --> apps by opening"stock Android" launcher and dragging app drawer icons to disable. Seems that has been removed in B27, so now we have no way to disable redundant clocks and calendars to name a few.
Any more suggestions? Anyone know any fixes for the above?

Battery Percentage: Should be displayed inside the battery icon or replace it. I use this feature, but no reason to have both this and the battery icon together. Uses up a ton of space on the status bar.

You can enable this with an app - search for "Battery Percent Enabler" in the Play Store. This was mentioned elsewhere in the forum - credit goes there.

Good summary. I can't believe someone actually thought the notification bell (and subsequently, the inability to turn it off) was a good idea.
I'm going to try to list workarounds here as well, so if someone can come up with good fixes for any of this stuff without waiting for ZTE, please share!
Updated with some new findings and ideas.
I actually like the bell, let's me check the time without having to worry about somebody seeing embarrassing notifications. ?

But Android already has a perfectly working system to hide notification content before unlocking the device. You can even pick which apps to show and which ones to hide. And, most importantly, it's OPTIONAL. And it's actually much better at protecting your privacy. With the bell, all the content is visible without actually unlocking your phone.. it just makes it more inconvenient to access.
Ability to turn off charging sounds.
Added charging sounds. Thanks for the feedback!

What about the charging sound? I got my phone on vibrate all the time (a phone ringing is considered super rude in most part of europe) and it just vibrates a bit when plugging in.

Mine does the same (also on mute all the time). Apparently if you have volume on, it makes noise. Either way, should be able to toggle the "charging notification".
Added speaker phone and proximity bugs.

"Wake on Plug" toggle (waking up screen on plug or unplug). I have this option on a Nexus tablet and OnePlus One phone, but it does not exist in MiFavor.

Apps: To disable stock calendar, clock, gallery, mifavor launcher, my voice, stock music app, and stock video app, you have to open "stock android launcher" and drag icons from the app drawer to top of screen. Why can't we just disable these same apps from settings --> apps?

What do you mean with stock android launcher? Where do i find it? I cant deactive this bloat without root
The phone, at least in US version, comes with a launcher called "Stock Android Launcher", but it is just a differently themed MiFlavor launcher, not a real stock android launcher. Confusing, but that is what is there.

Settings > Themes and Wallpapers.
On the US model, there's a theme titled "Stock Android". When using that theme, you can open up the app drawer, press and hold on an app, and on the top of the screen there's a "Disable" option. This is different from the standard Settings > Apps > selecting an app > Disable (which is greyed out for most of the stock apps).

Sadly, no such option on G Version -.- only 5 slightly different ZTE themes.
Also no Myvoice in g version. WTF?!
@xxBrun0xx: I saw you linked to this list in a ZTE forum, but I think it would be better if it had its own thread as well.
In addition to "wake on plug" toggle I mentioned a few posts above, I would like to see an option to remap capacitative buttons to whatever user wants, right now they can only be "flipped", but ability to have custom functions (on both short and long press) would be helpful. I personally, would like to use one of the button for menu rather than for recent apps.
