[Q] Cannot load Android after root attempt (possible wrong firmware) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seeing how easy it was to root my Samsung S2 with Gingerbread I tried it as well after the ICS update through Kies but after the process my phone just stays at the loading screen with the yellow triangle. I tried re-doing the steps and also tried a factory reset in recovery mode, cleared cache but it does not want to boot up. I then noticed I never looked at my firmware version and now I am unable to get this information as the phone does not start up.
Where do i start to get my phone working again. Below is all the details I could get from my phone:
Samsung GT-I9100
Serial Number: 355310040993713
I noticed when my phone was rooted with Gingerbread and I did the upgrade through KIES to ICS it removed my root access - is there a similiar way if one is not able to boot up the OS? Also recovery mode and download mode all work so I assume I do not have a brick?

No you don't have a brick.
1: flash the stock kernel if you know what ROM version you had using Odin.
2: flash again using Odin.
Also do the code wipe after flashing. And start from scratch.
Do not restore GB backups and use correct CF-Root to get root.

Thanks for the quick reply - but that is the problem. I have no idea what my kernel version is as I did not take it down before doing the rooting.

Well that was foolhardy.
How did you try to root after you updated to ICS then? Sounds like you tried to root by flashing a kernel; how did you know what kernel to use if you didn't know what your original kernel was?
You may need to flash a full stock firmware. That will include a stock kernel too.

well in that case flash a stock latest ICS using odin
after first boot dial *2767*3855#
it will wipe your phone but will fix the problems that may come later.

Ah okay - so I can use the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" (sorry cannot post links yet) on the xdadevelopers forum?
Would this also mean I am still able to use my phone with Samsung Kies or when does Samsung Kies normally stop working?
EDIT: I also stumpled across the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" thread. Would it be safe in my case to grab one of the official firmware that matches my region or is this to risky?

Yeah I was indeed foolhardy - I used XXKPA ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware. I just finished downloading the main files as per the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" guide. This should cover the full stock firmware and stock kernel?

Both recovery packages for GB and ICS both look like full firmwares. So yes, they will also include the kernel.
Just follow the guide.

Okay - the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" fixed my issue but now Samsung KIES gives me a "Your device does not support software upgrading through KIES".
Is there something else I can do or should I start looking at the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" and can I just use the region closest or supported by mine?

Kies will only update if you currently have a firmware/CSC combination that matches your region, and your region is officially supported. That is not likely now that you followed that "fix an unflashable or soft bricked" guide. Also, if you are in a non-supported region, Kies won't work for updates either. For example, I am an I9100 user in the USA, where it was never officially released, so Kies doesn't work for me for updates.
But now that you've followed that guide, you are familiar with flashing your phone yourself, and can use the Official i9100 Firmware thread to download and flash whatever version you want. No need to rely on Kies.

Excellent - this is becoming very interesting. My region was supported (Namibia) but I bought it in Germany. I see the latest release date firmware actually includes a German version. Those the region actually change the language of the phone as well?
I was thinking of using this one. What is the deal with the stock kernel file - do I need that as I thought the firmware is all that is needed

Is there a way to grab the firmware of another Samsung S2 (girlfriend has one as well) and use it to flash mine?

You can choose any language that is included in the firmware after you flash it. Most, if not all, will include English and German.

The stock kernel is linked in case you need it. It is also included in the full firmware package. But if you root with an insecure kernel, or flash a different kernel that auto-roots, and for whatever reason want to flash back a stock kernel, it is there for you.

I think there is, but I don't know what the method is, as I've never had to do this, and have not been curious enough about it to research it for myself.

You don't have to grab any thing! Just see what very she has and you will find it in Sammobile or Intratech's thread or general forum.

Don't use Kies, use Odin, it's far less temperamental. Just download th XWKE2 firmware from samfirmware.com and flash in the PDA section of Odin

You need to reflash stock using ODIN before you can use kies, as Kies doesn't recognise custom kernels.

Will reflashing bring back the stock kernel and make the phone unrooted in short make it the way Samsung sold it to me?
Also, I am using Galaxy S2 I9100G build number GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2 and for it only 1 unsecured kernel was available at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327509
I rooted my phone without any problem but since there's no way to get back the stock kernel, I am afraid that if need be, how am I gonna claim warranty for my device.

Yes aslong as you flash the firmware that came with it t will be like as samsung sold it. Have a look at intratech's thread he may just have the kernel if you still have the original firmware on it already.

Yes, I do have the original firmware on it. Didn't have enough guts to play with custom ROM :/
I did check intratech's thread and found stock kernel for XWKJ2 but the thread titles says "Official i9100 Firmwares" whereas my phone shows i9100G. I guess this won't work.
And, when flashing to original firmware, will the kernel's be replaced to the original one's as well?
Thanks for suck quick replies Am just a n00b diving into Android
You can extract the original kernel yourself if you want it http://www.hotfile.com/dl/136857418/c144909/I9100GXWKJ2_I9100GODDKJ2_INU.zip.html

Downloaded it. Now what do I do? Flash s2 with this, backup using titanium, root device and then use the stock to get rid of yellow triangle? Am I missing anything?
Thanks for your help
BTW, is there a way to get the latest available firmware in my country/region via KIES so that I can be 100% sure of being in right place
i cant post the link right now but you can google

and go the the dialandroid website they have a way to make it like original again

[Q] Newbie - help wit firmware SGS2 latest

Hi all,
I am aware that there are some other posts about newbie and firmware questions, but I guess since I upgraded to the latest firmware - hope it is okay to ask the question.
I have recently upgrade the Android to 2.3.4 XXKG6 - but now when I connect to Kies it says that the firmware is not upgrade-able. did I do something wrong?
What is the most stable, useable, efficient firmware available?
my phone is :
Model:GT-I9100
Android Version 2.3.4
BaseBand: I9100xxKG6
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100KG6-CL425236
Build Number: GINGERBREAD .XXKG6
It will be much appreciated if I someone can point me to the right direction on how to do the installation and where I can get the files.
Thanks again
i think its saying not upgradeable as thats the latest software isnt it? i believe it is so it is simply saying there isnt any further update CURRENTLY
xxkg5 was the official firmware that is upgradeable with kies.
xxkg6 is a custom that is cooked here at xda.
Cooked firmware does not work with kies as it is not recognized that is why you have to use either odin or cwm.
There is a warning at the beginning of the xxkg6 thread that tells you that kies will not work after installation.
Kies will pretty much never upgrade you from an odin flashed firmware, most of the time it will not recognise it as a valid version due to mixing and matching files.
Though, by the time you are odin flashing you will have gotten fed up by how slow firmware updates come anyway
But yes, KG6 is the current "best" stock firmware available.
Thank you guys.
This is a steep learning curve for me at the moment so bare with me
So, currently I have the latest Custom Firmware, is this correct?
Another questions:
* when I use the ODIN to flash the firmware to KG6 the option of "repartition" is not ticked. Do I need to re-flash it again and "ticked" the repartition option?
is there any difference with the "Repartition" option ticked and NOT ticked?
Thanks again
Sometimes a flash may carry a file called a pit file.If so the re-partition box will be automatically checked otherwise never under any circumstances should you check that box if you are not using a pit file.If it is needed the instructions will let you know otherwise never. If you are on XXKG6 and all works fine there is no need to do anything else unless you want to flash a ROM or something. That's up to you.
Sorry to be a big pain here but I am wondering if it is possible to down grade / RESTORE to the original firmware I had? (incase I want to)

I did the stock firmware as stated in the :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
What I did was downloaded the ZSKG2 firmware and using ODIN I flash the firmware. Is this way to do it to go back to official GingerBread 2.3.3?
I didn't do any Root processes.
Do I have to do the Kernel flash as stated in the tutorial? :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
My understanding is that I do not need to do the Kernel unless I want to do Root. am I correct?
*** Reason for trying to go back from 2.3.4 XXKG6 is because my WIFI signal does not look as strong as the 2.3.3 (let me know if this is incorrect)
Thanks
kernal flash is to bring to stock that mean it removes the root only.
firmwares do not change gingerbread versions from 2.3.3. to 2.3.4 or 2.3.4 to 2.3.3..
you need an offical carrier branded version that does a wipe of your phone.

Hi all,
I have restart My modem and and my Phone but my WIFI is not improving at all, I am just wondering if any one can help on how to put it back to my original firmware
Thanks
Your phone has gone into whats called a boot-loop.To get out of it enter into recovery mode (menu-volume up-power button) wipe cache, wipe cache repartion, factory reset and reboot system. If that doesnt work enter in download mode and repeat the full flash following word for word the instructions and repeat if needed the recovery wipe.
use this to wipe your device and return it 2.3.3, then upgrade back to xkg2.
XWKF1
This package has: PDA:XWKF1| PHONE: XXKE7| CSC:XEUKD1.
This will wipe your device so do a backup!
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/9OTQ8C6O5D
XWKF1 Stock Kernel: Use the ZSKF1 kernel, it's the same kernel.
THANK YOU ALL!!!
I got out of the boot loop using : recovery mode (menu-volume up-power button) wipe cache, wipe cache repartion, factory reset and reboot system
Thanks Cooza for the info. I got to 2.3.3 now
Now that I am back to starting point again. I would like to hear from you guys of the plus and minus of upgarding (which I should have asked in the first place)... I am learning the hard way...
Thank you for your generosity and patient explaining to me.
Thanks

[Q] Kies doesn't recognize firmware

Hi,
Kies doesn't know what firmware my phone, how can I solve this problem without having to root the phone or change roms?
Thanks
Rooting is not required to change ROMs.
The most important thing is, what ROM have you on your phone?
If you have a ROM that is not a standard ROM (stock or branded) then Kies will not recognise it.
Its a stock rom.
Something got messed up with the last update, and since then kies won't recgonize the firmware..
What should I do then?
By the way, the new update is 2.3.4?
thanks
If something got messed up, then reflash the ROM you can use Odin and use the stock ROM in the ROM Developers section.
maybe an older version of Kies might help..try searching the forum cause yesterday the same topic as your asking came up and few suggested rolling back the Kies version...new one is having problems i heard
dont know if this help you but worth a try

if your talking about apps and stuff i cant remember to be honest cause i rarely use odin but i think it does a complete wipe so i say yes you will lose data..
but as the guy above said try reflashing a stock rom and once your back up and running we can take the next step...
word of advice...2.3.5 officially has not been released in the UK..if i did not root i would be only updated to 2.3.4 the last few weeks...i do all my updating through custom roms or even by Intratech thread were he has all the latest releases..Kies for me is a no goes anymore....
so do your reading and if you ever need any hand send me a message and if i can help i will

You welcome.
i remember when i tried to change kernels from CF-root thread i could not get kies to recognize it...so tried to find the one that matched the closest and region i am and bam it worked..updated my firmware through kies and that was the end of it...but if you use a kernel to root and try and to update it through kies you lose your root...so my advice find a kernel that matches your firmware then by all means go ahead root and try flashing roms...you can always go back on stock if you want...
but do your reading and like i said you want a hand if i can i will help you
Why kies doesnt recognize my firmware
Yesterday i flashed my SGSII with I9100XWKI8 2.3.5 firmware, before that i had I9100XXKH3 2.3.4. Both Firmwares are European i believe. In both cases my Kies do not recognize it.
i installed the stock firmware no root at all
Is it because i live in South America?

And if I update to 2.3.5 (now I have 2.3.3) kies won't recognize the new firmware? Thanks!

Hello arni3, maybe you chose the wrong firmware or did something wrong on the way.
Are you still able to enter download mode ?
If Yes, follow this tutorial on how to Unroot/unbrick your Galaxy S2 to ICS.

If No, your phone is bricked. I suggest you bring it to Samsung.

I have been watching that video now and it tells me to download ICS stock ROM. Is the stock ROM different from phone to phone or is it the same which one I get? I live in Norway, Europe.

I have installed new firmware to 2.3.5 (had ress ICS earlier). that works, but when I try to install the official ICS through Wi-fi, it stops after 11% and gives me a message that it couldn't complete the update.
Do not use WiFi is the solution .

Arni I live in Norway too and i think is that firmware that is maybe wrong ! How did u manage to unpack it anyway ? Tried 7zip and on my mac unzip, that archive has errors. odin refuses to accept it after md5 check. so something must be wrong there ...
downloaded it like 5 times. impossible to unpack with 7unzip in windows, only in mac it unzips but ..the rest is dead

[Q] Firmware question, Telia Denmark

Hi guys
Think it's my first post here so please be gentle :silly:
I dont know what firmware to upgrade to (or if i have the latest firmware etc.), i cant dial *#1234# code as it will return a: Connection Problem or Invalid MMI Code. *#06# is working fine though. So i do not know what my CSC, PDA and phone is?
Only thing i can find in "about phone" is:
Device: Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300
Android: Android Version 4.1.1
Rom: Latest version of CM10
Baseband Version: I9300XXXLE8
Operator: Denmark - Telia

Look on www.sammobile.com/firmware for samsung firmware.Telia is not listed, also not on check fus. So i think you need this rom http://www.hotfile.com/dl/163050326/a3cfdf1/I9300XXBLFB_I9300NEEBLF1_NEE.zip.html for the Nordic countries. Install Triangle Away (here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114) first before flashing the rom with Odin to reset the flash counter. After you flashed the rom do a data/factory reset. Check first if the above rom i mentionedis the right one.
Was reading abit more (do not want to be stucked with a broken phone doing my vacation), found this is the I9300XXBLG6 the newest firmware and does it work for us on Telia in Denmark?

Better check on Telia`s website for the latest firmware. You might flash the rom in your post, however you may have to change the modem for better reception.

If i flash the new firmware again, do i need to root the phone again or does it "keep" the root i made earlier... Sorry for all the stupid questions i'm an old iphone fart. :silly:
I tried to search for a sammy wiki or something to become a little more clever about rooting, rom and firmware.
As i see it:
The firmware is kinda the phone bios, doesnt matter if you running a hacked version of the system or not.
The ROM is the "system" it might be stock or cyanogen etc.
You have to have a hacked firmware to be able root your phone.... Or am i totally wrong here?

If you buy Mobile Odin Pro and flash the firmware with that app you will keep root and you don`t loose no data. If you flash with Odin on your pc you will loose root and your user data will probably be deleted.
The firmware i just linked is it not possible to root using that and odin nonpro? Do i have to use an older firmware then?

Flash it with Odin and root with CF Root 6.4. You can flash that firmware although i wouldn`t do it, it is a British Telecom provider rom. I would flash the rom in the 2nd post (nordic countries) wich i recommended. For instructions see m signature.

The one closent to your orginal firmware should do
That is awesome. I will try and see what they say once I come in with unrooted phone. If they notice any thing, then i will have to change the glass my self, and if not, then it is awesome
