[Q] Alternative to XPeria Ray? - Buy Ray now or wait - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Hi all!
have been reading in this (awesome) forum for a while now. so first, thanks for the great work!
at the moment i own a ZTE blade with CM7 and its getting old. so i wanted to buy a new phone. sadly, all the new and great phones are massively big. i dont want to have to bua a manpurse so, the ray is one of the few phones that actually are small and where the community support (xda!) is great
the question is, is it intelligent/reasonable to buy a ray now? or should i wait? the xperia U is almost released and it has a dual core and nicer design (imo) but it also has a weaker battery and the worst part: no SD card slot.
as i want to use the phone as my mediaplayer as well, the 4gb of memory the U offers could be a bit of a pain.
so, my question:
is the ray that awesome that i should buy it now? or is there an alternative that you would recommend? what i expect from a phone:
small
nice screen resolution (>= 800x480)
reasonable battery
custom roms!
hope somebody can help me

IMHO, i would suggest you wait and see once Xperia U has been released and see it perform first.
if you are really sticking with the Sony brand and the listed specifications is what you prefer, the Xperia U is the closest one in comparison.
some downside (comparing it to ray) is the lower resolution camera 5MP, no SD card (4GB is not enough, at least 8GB or more), battery capacity is really low (not sure why?)
if i would choose my next Sony phone, I would go with the Xperia P.

Sony Experia U compared to Sony Ericsson Experia Ray
- better processor (dual core) and GPU (Mali400)
- no SD card slot
- lower quality camera
- smaller battery life
the decisive questions are
- how much better is the NovaThor U8500 CPU compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon SM8255 ?
- is the 8mpix ExmorR camera of Ray so much better than the simple 5mpix camera of U?
but even the NovaThor U8500 CPU is getting old...
so this is a hard decision, Experia Sola has the sd card but it will cost 50 euro more than Ray
here you can see Sola and Ray side by side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gO11MG6ss

future support for sola?
hi,
yes, the question is, how will the sola or U perform compared to the ray, because the ray is awesomely small.
this may be hard to answer, but would you think that it is likely that the Sola or U will get community support and custom roms like the 2011 xperia line?
the sola would be my fallback device. it is still reasonably small and has the sd slot. sadly a bad battery as well.

Camera quality cannot be said like this, it needs to be checked by comparing 2 photos.
Battery life needs to be tested also, as this information on websites are about phone in perfect conditions.
And how do you confirm that Mali400 is better than Adreno 205?

yes, of course and even more than the 2011 experia line
i think the 2012 experia line will be even more successfull with the community then the 2011 line

Mali400 is definitely better than Adreno 205, Samsung Galaxy S II uses the Mali400
"ARM's Mali-400 MP4 is the Fastest Smartphone GPU" http://www.anandtech.com/show/4760/arms-mali400-mp4-is-the-fastest-smartphone-gpufor-now
NovaThor uses a less powerfull version of Mali 400 than Samsung Galaxy S II
even Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance will use the same NovaThor 8500
but of course Mali400 and Adreno 205 are old now, in autumn new GPU will come Mali 604 vs Adreno 320
even Mali 604 is already old since it was announced in 2010 so in 2013 we get Mali 658

Buy Xperia Sola

Buy phone with 1GB ram, to be prepared for JB 4.1! None of those has 1GB.

Xperia SX seems to be a real Xperia Ray successor: small & powerful. The problem is that international version is not announced yet. At the moment it's only available in Japan. But is probably worth waiting...

Xperia Ray is the best smartphone, i'm the crispy display and far better battery backup. The phone was announced in 2011 and if you have never purchased it yet then i would like to suggest you Xperia U. Limitation with storage but good phone with looks and powerful configuration.

if i thinking about xperia U, i thinkings :
"is that too bad for a phone w/o sd slot?"
"how about future mod about this phone?" (like how can i backup my phone using CMW. but who knows....XDA devs are awesome)
"how far google can support this phone in the future?" (i believes that google will update this phone to JB)
For mostly users (dont really care about novathor, snapdragon or else), this may like some phone with best performance in its class (regarding from price n specs).
Xperia U's targeted for user whos like using cloudstorage more (the future ways) than natively sdcard.
USB OTG, dont forget that.

needless to say, updating Xperia smartphones is not google's bussiness, ya know?

Xperia Sola Is most convenient one to your option
also remember that XDA users and developers will move to 2012 line
and Ray is 2011 ,by the time this devices will lose attention
or ,I think It's best if you waited for Google 5 Devices
I think those will be great options ,also will have the top XDA support + Google support

[Q] Honestly disadvantages about Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S???

hey everyone
any disadvantages about Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S ?!!
I am thinking about getting it so please HONESTLY any disadvantages in this device
First of all, post in questions in...
... right, Q&A!
Only thing are the 512MB RAM that's a little bit bad.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
arc/arc S single core phone
u should wait for new SE phone named nazomi/Lt26i--dual core.......
and the amount of ram available in arc is 512 Mb only whereas nazomi would be having 1gb ram.......so u will feel the diiference......
I don't care about Dual core much because Android is going to release ICS which is fully optimized for dual core. So it can wait until most the app developers compile their program optimized for dual core it like having a Super bike and you can't drive faster on roads. But as far as jpg compression is too high no way to reduce it (As far as I know). Then yes the RAM could have been 768 or 1 GB but 512 is low if you run lot of apps. Battery life could have been better. But compared to the advantages this phone offers you won't really realize the disadvantages.
Hope this helps!

BTW:-720p screens are great for mobiles
Well, it is already but makes no sense as the apps aren't optimized yet.

Yes that would be next year, but not now, and not early next year
i'm owning arc lt15i.
i think what really missing is front camera. not really necessory, but usefull when u need it (sometime skypeing with kids when away, force to use lappy)(ladies use it for mirror)
other than that, the body not so great. mine after few months the crome & paint chirped (yes, i hate wearing case to the arc sexy body)(& yes the body just painted plastic & plated chrome)
low/no internel memory sometimes annoyed, even with apps2sd, red level always make you sick. i know there is some solution, but some critical apps need to being in internel, for faster loading & avoid crash.
as sony, camera not really in good department, not optimize since iphone use same sensor type (yes iphone 5mp cam some better quality). not premium camera replacement. (but at least better than korean)
sound quality side, quite okay (better than korean, again). can satisfied normal user but not dedicated music player for audiophile.
other than cons, i can say it's okay, compare to korean. great call quality, great screen (but only when head on, narrow view).
should i suggest it? yes if you really get good deal (just take lt15 rather than lt18, more 400mhz not really good deal, if the price different too much)
other suggestion, consider premium htc phone. or if you don't mind smaller (but great) screen & love lots of apps rather than play with interface, just take original iphone 4 (new, used or 8gb). my wife use it & it's really great phone, over my arc in much side, of course not screen size. great camera, great ui fluid, great sound quality, great screen etc.

About Xperia P?

Hello Everyone
Sorry if this was posted before, but I'm planning on switching from Xperia Arc S to Xperia P
I was reading through online reports / reviews from here, CNET, Sony's official website.
and I'm kinda confused, I know it's for sure better than the Arc S but I was wondering is it really worth upgrading?!
The main reason for me to upgrade is to avoid the lags / freezes I'm getting on ICS even after removing bloatwares, adding build.prop values and running init.d scripts (unless there is something else I'm missing).
So what do you think guys is it worth the upgrade?! Are there any stupid lags or are the Dual-core CPU and 1GB RAM doing their job?!
Also is Sony WhiteMagic technology really helping users to see under strong light? I can barely see my Arc S screen when I'm not under a roof !!
What about GPU?! I read a while back that Adreno 205 (which is included in the Arc S) is better than Mali-400MP unless that fact is changed
Thanks in advance

Adreno 205 is way weaker than Mali-400. The fact that Galaxy S3 uses Mali-400 is enough. Adreno 220 or 225 could match Mali-400, but Adreno 205 can't.

I'm sorry for all the questions but I still have more
I read here that unlocking the bootloader is not really recommended for Xperia P?
Well I did that for my Arc S so I can flash custom kernels and always be rooted, I can't stay without root or else I wouldn't be able to test a single thing of Droid Manager :-/
Or else I wouldn't care about rooting the phone since I don't flash themes nor mods, I like the OS the way it is
I go to Xperia P from Xperia Neo. Xperia P is fast enought and not need for custom ROMs! In games Xperia p is faster as Xperia Neo with overclocked CPU up to 1,8 ghz, for example, Dead space on Neo lag in scenes with monsters, but on Xperia P whole game go smooth!

Well I don't really care about overclocking since I rarely overclock my Arc S, besides, it's a dual core CPU for a smart phone OS I don't think there will be a need for overclocking taking in consideration that I only play Temple Run, Unblock me when I'm board . I was just somewhat afraid from not finding it's performance smooth enough, but after all the feedbacks I got I think I'm gonna head for one in the next couple of days
it has good performance for a phone, it's beautiful, and with official ICS you have extended standby mode that can make your phone live some more days, I mean with "normal" phone use you can stay up to 2days more, so you charge it every 3 days, maybe 4 if you don't use it, that's quite good, IMO it's the perfect phone because of the price and it's 4' screen (above it's too large for me)
About the whitemagic tech, it's really good. Even when the sun shines on the screen I can see it. And not only barely see it like with the iphone 4 or the x10, it is really bright! I would dare to say that it's the brightest screen on the market for now. Else the phone is really smooth, does not lag, only right after boot for me, cuz I added a huge load of widgets. I scroll once through the homescreens and it's gone
That's exactly what I needed to know
Thanks guys for your feedbacks

1. SGSII has the same GPU Mali 400 as Xperia P
2. Don't think that will happen. Xperia P is a Dual core phone with same Cortex-A9 architecture as the SII, you'd b happy with it's gaming performance.
3. Already answered, same as above.
4. Xperia P res is 540x960 pixels... SII has 480x800 and xperia U has 480x854 pixels...
Xperia P has BETTER screen resolution.
On a side note Xperia P has just 11 GB user available memory with NO memory card slot. So it could be a deal breaker for some.
If u can raise ur budget a bit Go for SGSII or Xperia S (24k/25k).
If you're happy with Xperia P internal memory then u can get it for just 17k from eBay.

Yes, agreed... Not only the SII is better in games but it's just simply plain better. With Exynos chipset and super amoled screen is just great. Camera produces excellent images too. And for all that it will cost u about 3-4k more.
If u can stretch up ur budget go for SII.
If u can't XP is pretty good with gaming too.

Well some people including me prefer punchy saturated color... And LCD can never match Deep blacks of AMOLED or viewing angles. Moreover, Samsung has given u a choice of saturation. Light, Normal, High.
For me comparing Super LCD with Super AMOLED is like comparing Super Mario with Superman. Lol
I'll take SGSII over XP on any day....
Oh and for camera.... SGSII has a better one....
Check out their samples.... you'll see XP produces grainy images. XP also has Low internal memory... no card slot.
For 22k I willing to pass....

oh comparing super LCD to super AMOLED isnt like this, amoled is a young technology, you should wait at least 2 years before Amoled gets better than LCD, it's like comparing World of Warcraft to the closed Beta of any new MMORPG,
also sony design > samsung.
sony UI > samsung,
Sony Price > Samsung.
I think GS2 is too old to fight against XPeria P,
in xperia P price range P is the king of every android phones, if you can put more money for GS2 then you should give a little more again to get a real better phone, do you understand me? I mean, if on 1 to 10 xP costs 5 and GS2 costs 7, just give 1 or 2 more and get a real high end phone =) ok GS2 is somehow a bit better than XP but it's not worth the money

Our mobile compared to leading mobiles as sg3, iPhone5..

Xperia neo with 1ghz sd2, 512 ram..
I think we are way back ..
2013 is the last year for our mobile with custom roms we can go year may be less ...

And the point of your thread/post is? Of course other than pointing to clear facts which everyone is aware.
I just wanna say that mobile technology improving much faster than we are expecting..
That's a good sign...
the majority of users wont spend more than 200euro for a phone so Yes Many new things might be created for Super-smartphones but they will still have to work on ther older ones. Most people i know buy cheap phones rather than Quad-Core phones. Mostly people dont even know what Dual-core or quad core is .
Cocluding i believe we are safe.
2013 mobile trend..
5inch 1080p
Quadcore CPU

So? Frankly hardware is not everything. Software optimisation is more important.
I know things improve real fast, but I think it's time we stop following the trend. It is very costly to buy new phones every year.

A good example is the jb update for the t, now has 800mb of free ram after boot, with ics 400....
Also in benchmark tests( if thats your thing) it is now out performing the HTC one x with its four cores.

Benchmarks aren't a justifiable source to see your phone's performance!
Like mpiekp already told!

I don't have money for a Xperia S or Ion, so i have to be happy with Neo L.
1Ghz, 512mb ram is mid-range. Dual core, 512~1024mb ram is high-end, and if you **** money.... premium class, Xperia Z, S3, One X, iPhone 5....
This are ok specs for Neo series. HTC One V, same SoC, Samsung Galaxy Ace is 180 euros....lol, not much choice in mid-range area.
Here's something strange I encountered yesterday :
My brother has HTC explorer ( gb, pure stock untouched, 600 MHz MSM7225A, Adreno 200 ) .... Pretty well below average huh?
Now mine ( Sony lww, ICS, MSM8255, Adreno 205, rooted , unlocked, bloatfree, custom rom& kernel, updated drivers, oc to 1.4 GHz ) ( Everything I could do to increase performance )
Who's the winner ? Mine ?
I played subway surfers on both. On HTC, due to its weak hardware, extreme lags are plausible. But devs are smart. When the game ran, it did not ran at full FPS ( say at 22 FPS rather than 30 ) . This way load reduces on both CPU and GPU so they have to calculate less instructions. This results in fairly good performance ( No extreme lags, touch responds all the time etc )
Now, for LWW, game tried to run at full 30 FPS. This means load on CPU and particularly GPU is maximum. Hence most of the time it ran real smooth but sometimes when 3D models became prominent, it lagged badly and my touch stopped responding. Result , the kid banged his head on a train engine .
Thus, it's not the hardware but software optimizations. One can point that I'm comparing gb and ICS. But still ( 600 MHz + heavy sense ) . That settles the seesaw.
( Not to mention, our devices on gb beat hell out of HTC exp. )
That's what we are not getting from Sony (swo)... compared to other manufacturers ics builds
Useless thread.

What about xperia x10 mini pro? is it any good for gaming?
Xperia Ray is a very good phone but I am afraid the Xperia X10 mini or minipro or the SE live with walkman will definitely preform better in gaming performances considering they have a HVGA display that will demand less power from the processor and the gpu. But yet again, the small screen(3.2'') is a fun killer. So I would recommend a bigger display device for gaming, if you want to have real fun. Go for Xperia U (best budget phone for gaming ) . It's got dual core 1ghz and mali 400 gpu, the price has also significantly reduced.

Yeah I'm confused between XU or XRay because XU have only 4GB and cannot use external microsd

Okay I understand your problem bro. You needed a gaming phone So I mentioned the Xperia U. If you are a hardcore music lover then certainly the Xperia U is not for you. But but but, if you are aware of the USB on the go feature, it's very very useful for the Xp U. You can carry as many music and video files as you want and connect on the go. I have seen my friends do that. Comparing the gaming performances , the U is an ultimate winner.

Xperia J with almost same specs and a 4 inch screen is a killer
I'd recommend Micromax Canvas HD that is A116 it's a phone under your budget with a qualcom quad core processor and five inch screen makes it ideal for gaming
Games like Asphalt Heat run without lag and glitches

I seriously don't at all recommend the Xperia J. Just take a look at the specs.
OS Android OS, v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich), upgradable to v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)
Chipset Qualcomm MSM7227A Snapdragon
CPU 1 GHz Cortex-A5
GPU Adreno 200
What kind of gaming performance do you expect from the Adreno 200 GPU and a 1ghz Cortex A5...and that too with ICS running.
It will be able to run/start most of the games, but nothing will run smoothly.
But on the Canvas HD A116 part, I agree with you. This phone has got some serious power under the hood. Depends on the buyer, if he wants to go for a micromax phone or a branded phone.

Ics on xperia 2011 works great
sony xperia ray
ics 4.0.4 rooted
stock rom
I also recommend you all xperia 2011.
Have lww and is great. Best will be xperia arc, arc s, ray or neo v. They all are cheap and runs most wanted, shadowgun, gta vice city lagless.
I can confirm that NFS:MW works like a charm on my Xperia Ray. You don't need a custom ROM or kernel, just a lot of free RAM. Before I rooted my phone, my RAM was pretty cluttered with apps like Facebook and Sony bloatware. After root, I managed to get around 150 MB RAM constantly, and MW works perfectly.
