Record with external Mic? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can the GS2 record with from an external audio source via 4 pole mic? headset with built in mic peerhaps? What about bluetooth?
Also can anyone suggest where to get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack that is 4 pole?
I've gave up looking at ebay.
EDIT: Does not seem to record from bluetooth.
Nor mic without a 4 pole connector, Which I am still trying to find.

Bump!
Looking for your knowlege, Don have access to my headset with mic, Could someone test it?

I'm actually in the same boat as you. So far, I've seen conflicting reports. Some people say that external mics won't work with the stock camera app, some people say that any 4-conductor (TRRS) mic will work just fine, and some people say that you have to use a y-cable to be able to plug in a standard mic.
That said, I did find something called the i-Microphone that's supposed to work. There is even a video on YouTube where someone successfully tested it on the SGS2.
I can't post external links in my posts yet (haven't been here long enough), so you'll have to search for these using the terms below.
(1) Y-Cable:
Search Amazon for: Headset Buddy01-PC35-PH35)
(2) i-Microphone:
Search Google for: i-Microphone
(3) i-Microphone Test Video:
Search YouTube for: Samsung Galaxy S2 External Microphone vs Internal Test
Let me know if you find something that works for you!

I have discovered that the default camera app will not record audio from an external source.

I tried a inline headset but no luck.

Will this external mic work on i717

I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/TINY-TIE-CL...quipment_ET&hash=item3f1772ae7e#ht_1476wt_978
which is supposed to connect to as a smartphone and work as an external mic. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried something like this on i717.
Also , what kind of camera app should I use in order to enable recording from this mic ?
By itself, it will not. It is using the connections that the headphones would use. Most likely it would play sounds and not record them. You would need to find an adapter.

I have tried just using the standard sound recorder app but all I get is recording through normal mic.
Yes, you can do this. I suspect your problem is in your PCs mixer setup. If you are using Windows, different versions have different ways of getting there, but typically thru Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices. Select Mixer Device: audio input for your sound card. You will get a set of controls for each input device. You can select the one you want to use and adjust its volume. I suspect you may be set to use line input but connecting to mic or something like that. It's easiest to check if you use a microphone and audio source (e.g., CD player) for "test" sources and playing with controls til you get recording ok. Then plug you mobile into the same jack.
Good Luck.

I believe the question was about recording ON the phone, not FROM the phone...

Yup, I want to record on the phone, from the stereo.

I don't suppose anyone has anything else to add to this thread? It would be really useful if I could get the phone recording audio input through it's headphone jack...

Frankly, I don't need it, but just out of curiosity I tried using the standard voice recorder with a mic on a stock headset, and it worked perfectly. So, as long as you have a mic properly connected to your audio socket, you should be all good to go. "Regular" mic will not work, as it has a different connector pinout. Basically, your 3.5mm jack wiring should be like this (starting from the tip, going towards the cable): L-Out | R-Out | GND | Mic. This is the standard pinout used in most phones, including Sammy. On Nokia handsets and some old phones GND and Mic are reversed.
Excuse my bumping, but surely someone has a definitive answer and doesn't mind sharing it with me?

Did you read my previous post? I thought I was quite specific about my test, and even gave you the pinout for the mic...

Sorry, I was posting from my phone!
Thanks very much, your response is very helpful!
I will investigate getting the right cable!
EDIT---
Seems that I would only be able to record in mono that way... So not fit for my purpose
Thanks for all the help guys!

Oh, that's what you are trying to do... OK, it's clear now. In this case, the answer is most definitely negative -- the phone's audio connector only has a microphone mono input. I don't believe such combo connectors (with stereo out and stereo in) even exist in 3.5 mm standard... I personally have never seen one, or heard of it.

Can i record video or audio with the external mic on Z2?

Hi guys,
i found an interesting thing on the internet. It tells that any new smartphone can record audio/video with external mic plugged into jack output. The only thing is that the mic must be plugged with the jack 3.5 TRRS cable. Is that true? Im talking about things like that:

Sorry for my bad English and thanks for any reply.
Cheers!

You should try it and give feedback
Not sure if that works, but Sony made a jack microphone for Z2:

But no video

I have that exact mic and it's pretty good for what it is. Not as sensitive as I'd like (Trying to do voice dictation in university lectures doesn't really work) but a definite improvement over the built in mic.
Have You checked the mic sensitivity settings in the sound & notification settings -> accessory settings menu for the build in/external mic?

I tried setting it on high earlier today (classes are done so I can't check how a lecture setting would work) but fairly quiet speaking (like if you were in a movie theatre to someone beside you) from about 4 feet away seems to be the range at which the word recognition is still accurate.
Speaking at normal or loud volumes makes the voice control useable from pretty much anywhere inside an average sized bedroom.

External Microphone using Video Camera App on CM12

After being informed that my Note 3 requires TRRS for video, I am still unable to get any video camera to use the external microphone on my device.
I used 3 different Lavalier Mics that use TRRS.
1. Rode SmartLav+
2. ATR3350IS Omni Lavalier Microphone for Smartphones
3. Miracle Sound Deluxe Lavalier Microphone
When using the stock Android video camera, it clearly doesn't detect that an external mic has been plugged in. I also tried this using the Wondershare PowerCam app, and the CameraMX app.
First Test.
I made videos using the internal mic and compared it to when I plugged in the external mic. They sounded the same.
Second Test
I ran the tests again using the lav mics, but after I hit record, I laid the phone inside a shoebox and put the lid on it. It sounded muffled and nearly inaudible like someone who dropped a recorder inside a shoe box and tried to make a recording. LOL. I laugh to keep from poking my eyes out.
Third Test
I installed Rec Forge Lite and Rec Forge II. Plugged in each lav mic, hit record, stuck the phone inside my sock drawer and closed it. Perfect recording!
Question
Does CM12 have an issue where video cameras are unable to switch over to the external microphone?

Any rom that can activate use of external mic ?

Hello at XDA forums.
Looking for a good daily rom, that also activates use of external mic, not headset, but actual external mic through USB cable.
Need it for work in the field to record interviews and such, and would preffer not having to get a newer model phone.
Tried searching different sites, threads and roms, but dont find any that specifies activating use of external mic.
I think it is only the usb driver in the p20 lite, so it shouldnt be that big of an issue, but who knows .
Thanks in advance

It depends on stock hardware. Try to activate ext. mic. using this Camera
thanks for your reply!.
I know the p20 lite allegedly does not support ext mic, if i ask huawei thats the answer.
But that does not mean it could not work with flashing another rom into it.
They say it only supports basic mic through mini jack / supported headsets.
I am looking to use a propper mic through usb connection, to record VO, interviews and such.
Can i try this Camera download without rooting it ?.
Installed it and will try with external mic attached later on tight and report back with findings, thanks.
