[Q] Nook 16GB - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hi, I'd like to buy nook tablet 16GB.
My question is if it is different in any other way than the 8GB?
Is rooting procedure the same?
I know it might be a silly question but I've seen that many people around have only 8GB.
And the last question, maybe I'm a little bit lazy, but does root procedure enable me to do the dual boot, or I can do it without rooting? Is dual booting more efficient than just "modding"?

the first model came with 1GB of working ram and the later comes with 512MB so that one fact is giving the forum developers a 'major' pain...
.
imho, i believe you just need to go to the general section and do some reading of the FAQ posts...

Simply rooting on the stock OS enables access to content/features you otherwise would not have. However, there are still some limitations. You could thus install cm7 or cm9 (cm9 only for 16gb model) internally, saying goodbye to the stock OS entirely. You could leave the internal OS alone and make a bootable SD card for cm7 on either NT model. This would thus allow you to either boot into cm7 or B&N android (dual boot). Do some reading and see what fits your needs best.
I should note that while many people avoid replacing the internal OS due to worries about voiding the warranty, it is trivially easy to return this thing back to stock conditions and B&N would never be the wiser.

What do you mean by "working" RAM?
Like every model has 1GB of RAM, but later ones have only access to 512MB?

Last fall, Barnes & Noble unveiled its Nook Tablet in a very distinct way. Instead of matching the Kindle Fire’s $200 price, the CEO systematically trashed the Fire with an entire slide show full of ways that the Nook Tablet was superior to the Fire (spec comarison here) and worth its more expensive $250 price tag. Among its vital advantages was double the storage (16GB) and RAM (1GB) of the Fire. Compared to these specs, the Fire underpowered and slow, the B&N argued. It’s only been a few months, but oh how things have changed. Today, B&N unveiled a new version of the Nook Tablet with the same RAM and storage as the Kindle Fire. The price: $200.
To be fair, even with the drastic cut in specs, the Nook Tablet does still have a few advantages over the Kindle Fire. We were never able to obtain a Nook Tablet for review, but from our impressions at the launch event, the ‘VividView’ display on Nook is much better and the microSD slot for expanded storage is nice, if you need it. But the cut in RAM will likely mean that the tablet will lose that quick responsiveness that separated it from the sluggish Fire.

Is there any way (except from asking a question to a seller) to find if this tablet has 1GB of RAM?

If its 16gb HAS 1GB ram

Just to confirm, demetris_I is correct. The 16GB model has 1GB of RAM.

why did you pick this over kindle fire?

just curious
Better screen quality and expandable memory via uSD card.
History of the nook color. More ram. Sd card slot. More internal storage (yes I did not look into storage enough initially, but now that it is rooted, I have access to it anyhow)

Looking for a worthy successor to my Sony EReader. The Nook is acknowledged to be the best reading experience of any of the readers. The NT should carry this tradition forward.
Having 200-some books in EPub format - I was not about to switch to a proprietary, locked-down format with Amazon. That would be as bad as going with Apple.
I have two rooted Android phones - which I love. The chance to pair the Nook reader with the Android technology was irresistible. I have been playing with writing code for Android for a couple of years - really looking forward to the extra real estate on the NT.
Then there is Barnes and Noble. Well, you can't have everything...
The rootablity of NC of which I own and love, each of the other nooks, all of which I own and the hope of more on the NT. I have even gifted the ATT+wifi nook to family and still retain all of the wifi only units.
It is great to see root achieved here but why not to the boot loader?
Captn
Mostly because of owning NC, thinking NT would follow in its steps. Didn't quite pan out as of yet.

Things are coming along quite nicely. Remember, the NC wasn't rooted and fully customizable right away.

Nor did it have a locked bootloader.
Haven't decided yet. Have a Fire right now but I'm 75% sure im going to exchange it for an NT because of the UI sluggishness and also the browser really impressed me in the NT.
Screen, speed, and the ergonomics of the tablet. Im not a fan of the flat glass tablets. Im not a fan of cheap feeling tablets. If i was ide just get an acer iconia
I heard the silk browser was better, but w/e.
I chose the NT because of the exterior build, the sd slot, better hardware specs, and better screen.
Expandable memory, more on board storage (or so I thought), greater possibility of new ROMs and rootability.
Biggest reason is uSD slot, but the extra 512MB of memory and mic are nice as well.
More RAM
Expandable storage (SD card slot)
Better display
Nicer looking (to me, anyway)
I already have a Kindle Simple Touch
The 20% discount, duh.
Memory Basically
I like the Nook because of the expandable memory. It's a shame that ads out there are misleading the consumers...saying it has 16gb over the Kindle's 8gb...Kindle allows you to use most of it. I bought both of these to try. I like the thinness of the Nook and even though I had to buy a memory card its interface is better. I hope B&N can offer up some of the memory or I can figure out how to root. I've never done it before and I don't want to end up with a useless tablet if I don't root it right.
Partly because of the specs, more ram, plus allow micro sd. Reviews like Engadget have said that videos play more smoothly on the NT.
And partly because I like the covers for the NT. I had a "Canvas writer's cover" for my NC before and really like the mounting system, it's really solid. I bought a "Leather writer's cover" with my NT.
Those covers are awesome, just like carrying around a book. I didn't like the ones for the KF, the book cover ones for the KF all seem to have cheap straps around the corners for mounting.
for the specs...
more ram and sd card implementation are the main reasons.
i live outside the US so i need to use the device in particular with files saved on. so i need more space as i can and the extra slot gives me the flexibility i need.
more ram of course sounds nice and grants very good performances.
No reliance on the cloud for storage.

I couldn't decide... so I bought both.
My wife saw the kindle and assumes it is a christmas gift for her.. so now I have reason to keep it. The Nook Tablet is for me.
The bumped HW specs is the main reason for the NT
The OS on the KF, however, is fantastic.
I am sure we will start seeing amazon launcher ported to other tablets (already done!) and would be great to have the Amazon launcher on the NT. But the locked bootloader is like someone pissing on my ice cream. NT is already losing the popularity vote in the media, as all they are talking about is "KF vs Ipad"... The NT is completely shadowed by the KF simply because Amazon knows how to market.
But NT is killing the few extra million that the dev community would be worth by unnecessarily locking their bootloader. I can somewhat understand locking it for phones for carrier reasons. But there is absolutely no benefit for B&N to lock the bootloader on this. You are only raping yourself of millions from people not buying and not buying future versions because they will assume the same.
But back to the 2 tablets...
NT feels SOOO much better in your hand due to the curved bezel.
KF is a brick. Gets hard to hold after a while.
NT hardware is faster
KF software is better
Both can be rooted
Both have Google Framework
Both have amazon appstore and video player
Both run GoLauncher and ICS Launcher perfectly
I was not able to run Zeam, Launcher 7, and a few others on either device.
Wave Launcher runs great on both, tho on the both, the resizing of the swipe location was really glitchy, but other than that it works fine. Just use the gesture area presets to find a spot.
I like dual launchers (amazons and go) on the KF
I have no desire to keep the default NT launcher.. it is just garbage compared to KF.
I am still playing with both... I think it depends on where development goes to determine which one I give my wife for Christmas

Nook Tablet for 199$ @ebay

Guys there a deal for today at ebay.com for Nook Tablet from B&N that gives it for only 199$
yep.. couldnt refuse at that price point.. they got rid of the coupon.. so just $199 outright.. so saves on taxes if your state requires collecting it.. debated.. but i just cant say no to a deal like that.. loved the original NC.. was a solid piece of kit.. so i know i'll love the tablet..
I would get it as well but I live outside USA so.... :/
I jumped on this too. I've been following various websites for a better price and this is by far the best I've found (without having to do any pricematch/coupon shenanegans).
And the offer runs to Feb 23, apparently. Hope this establishes the new price point !
B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

I thought the Kindle Fire only recognized 2 points on the touch screen as well. At least thats what many review for the game Nova (kindle fire edition) on the Amazon app store say. http://www.amazon.com/Near-Orbit-Va...1?s=mobile-apps&ie=UTF8&qid=1329581136&sr=1-1
Hi couple of questions before i decide to take the plunge
1)Have the devs found out how to use the 12GB space that BN owns
2)How easy is this to root?
thanks!
I ordered it two days ago, can't wait to get it in the mail now.
The B&N - not a good deal at $250?
Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

1) yes
2) very easy...check put the development forum and you'll see the one click root. In a few days CM7 will be released in greater fashion than previously. In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).
Trust your gut. In the long run, I think if you choose the nook tablet, you'll be extremely happy.

Got my tablet for $150 on craigslist WITH a 16gb SD card and a case included! *steal*
Bought my girl the NC off eBay for $150. Not bad I guess.
NT rooted with CM7
NC rooted with ICS CM9
I think I like the NC better now lol. Will the NT ever see ICS?

I wonder if this deal involves the new model of NT with only 8G of internal memory (instead of 16G)? This model can also be purchased from the BN website:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-tablet-barnes-noble/1104687969?ean=9781400501779
take note of the 512mb ram as well so not only is the 8 gig model less storage space...but also down to 512mb system ram. I was hoping they'd keep the 1 gig ram but just lower the 'hdd' shame not :/

New NOOK Tablet 8G model launches today. Only $199.

The only discernible difference is 8G of storage memory instead of 16G. The price is meant to match the Kindle Fire, obviously.
Here's a product link:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-tablet-barnes-noble/1104687969?ean=9781400501779
Note: I do not have one nor have I seen one of these -- just the page on the website.
Ram is also halved its now down to 512mb
Spec wise, it's pretty much the same as a Kindle Fire, but with microSD card support. Makes for a more interesting market out there for low cost tablets.
I guess the NT with 16GB are now an "NT Classic" model.
Perdiction: Barnes and Noble will be out of business within 2 years.
The Nook Tablet is far superior to Kindle Fire. But instead of B&N updating the NT so it can show off all it's bells and whistle, i.e., a true tablet for $249, these fools figured if we can't beat them, join them. Idiots.
I will sit back and watch B&N go down in flames and laugh my happy ass off.
Internal Storage
Also of note:
- NOOK Tablet–8GB: 5GB for content; of which 1GB is reserved for NOOK Store content
- NOOK Tablet–16GB:13GB for content; of which 12GB is reserved for NOOK Store content
Looks like they are giving more internal to the user by default in the 8gb unit.

I'd say this is more in line with how Apple rolled out the iPod nano - weaker specs, lower price.
I think it's actually pretty brilliant with what they're doing here. Tiered price models have been very successful in the past and B&N are competing wth the Kindle Fire on a more even playing field now. Everyone was obsessing over the price of the Fire; now there's a Nook to match it competitively.
That being said, I think the Fire's still gonna stay on top of the cheap tablet market. The average user is usually stuck with stock firnware and the content Amazon's got in that case is miles ahead of B&N.

I second that. Amazon apps are far more numerous and far more competitively priced than anything B&N has done so far. And the Kindle Fire is simply far easier to tinker with than the Nook Tablet.
B&N are trying to catch up with Amazon, but they started out a little late. Kindle Fire has now a solid reputation, and there is nothing B&N can do to reverse that.
I went for the NT because on paper it seemed like a good choice: 16 GB of storage and microSD. But I found out that I could only use 1 GB of that storage. So I ended up buying an 8 GB miscroSD card.
If I had to do it all over again, I probably would go with a Kindle Fire.
Now with the CM7, and hopefully CM9 soon enough, I have a decent cheap 7" tablet.

Mad? No. Just stating the facts. Barnes and Noble is a failed company and it doesn't have to be.
Instead of freeing up the Nook Tablet, these fools make a Nook Kindle Fire. Have these idiots no understanding of why the KF is out selling them? No, they don't.
So you half the memory and lower the price $50. Did they think the reason they weren't selling like the KF was the price? It's not the price. It's the BN software they locked the device down with.
The average buyer has no idea what root is nor should they. What they know is they can't do the things on the NT that can be done on a KF. They know that free apps on the KF cost $3.99 on the NT. They don't care that the NT is a much better product spec wise. They know that when they purchased a product called a Nook "Tablet", they weren't expecting a Nook "Reader".
Mad? No. Pissed at myself for buying and then not returning this locked down POS - yes.
Looks to me like more great hardware at a reasonable price. The average user may prefer the total package that comes with the Fire (hardware and apps) or even the iPad. But, with the resources available here to root the Nook Tablets and load CM7 or CM9, these are great tablets.

My opinion is that the 16GB nook tab is much better than KF and the 8GB nook tab, as we have

16GB space
and of course 1 GB RAM
For me the ram is the most important

That's definitely not the case. Do you really think the main driver for sales of the Fire was whether or not it's an open platform?
The majority of consumers are not like us. They don't care about custom ROMs, rooting, or modding. Most of them just buy devices and use them. Amazon is a bigger and more tech-savvy company with better marketing muscle. They also have a leg-up in the e-reader market since they broke it into the mainstream with the original Kindle. That means they get better exposure and better brand name recognition by default when compared to B&N, regardless of what products are competing. They also have WAY more digital content to offer than B&N, especially on the Fire, which had the lower price tag initially and was announced way earlier than the Nook Tablet. Being first is a powerful thing.
I agree that the Nook Tablet being locked down sucks, but it's not going to end B&N. Amazon will stay dominant but device markets usually have room for second-placers and runners-up. B&N is still a very important figure in the book business too, digital or not.
The problem as I see it with Barnes and Noble is with their fragmentation of their apps into yet another app store. They are doing the 70/30 pay structure similar to Apple. What they should be doing is have curated or "Nook Recommends" store that is compatible with Android.
The current selection of apps is not going to do it. They don't have FB, Twitter, top game developers on board. That and having apps that cost money when the same apps are on iOS or Android for free (no free version of words with friends).
They have all this power but no app ecosystem.
It's like having a V6 engine in a Power Wheels, and limiting the top speed to 5 mph.

I agree. The loss of storage space is small potatoes when you have the sd slot. The loss of ram is a blow, especially if you're buying hardware for the long run.
Kindle fire also has advertising, unlike the nook tablet. Magazines, web- Amazon andi have seen on TV as well. nook tablet has had none of this. That said the nook tablet is better.
I bought my NT when they first came out. I couldn't wait to get it and was major league disappointed. In fact, the only thing that kept me from returning it was seeing some posts in these very forums talking about CM7 and CM9 coming.
Now I have CM7 up and running, thanks to Team-B, and I finally feel like I have a tablet worth owning.
That is the biggest issue in my mind with B&N and even with the KF. These tablets are so much less than they could be. I understand the need for the device makers to earn some money on these through book, magazine, movie, and app sales. However, they have crippled it so much and with the interface built for the over 70 crowd, this will just not keep anybody who has a smartphone happy for more than a couple of hours.
I still buy my books through B&N. They have wonderful ereader software that I use every day. They just don't have to shackle me to keep me as a customer.

Wait. This was posted today? :what:
Please define "locked down". My NT hasn't seemed very locked for the past 2 months... And even less locked the past 2 weeks.
Back on topic, no thanks, you can keep the KF and the 8GB NT. I prefer an sd card slot, and 16GB internal storage, and the GB of ram, and the ergonomics of the device.
IOW, NT (classic, lol) + CM7 (thanks again, guys) = happy camper

[Q] New 8gb nook Half the ram? is that worth it?

greetings, i am a noob *sorry newb*! so go ahead and scream at me if you wish (that video had me rotfl), i bet you can't say anything to me that i haven't heard allready from people in Everquest, World of Warcraft, and League of Legends.
A friend introduced me to Xda when I was consitering buying a nook and he explained the concept of rooting.
Anyway, my question revolves around the half the ram on the new nook tablet. Assuming that there is no problems with rooting it, how much will half the ram effect the system?
I thought seeing the $50 price slash was a godsend, 8gig of storage i can live without, besides, its upgradeable if i really need it, but half the ram? whats the point of sticking on a faster processer if your gonna gut the ram?
can anyone give me an opinon as to if this is worth the price slash? or is $50 worth the extra ram?
its not half the RAM... its half the Storage. Which unless you are going to do some advanced partitioning you probably won't get much use out of anyway.
You pretty much have to get an external micro-SD card for these anyway as B&N only makes 1GB of the internal storage easily available.
Short answer... yeah its pretty much worth it. You can find 32gb cards online For $35 so you won't be missing much.

Re:
I cannot say whether or not it is worth it, because I have no experience with any other Android tablets besides the Nook, but I can confirm according to its website that is does have half the ram as well as half the storage. 8 GB storage and 512k ram.

You may have noticed in the video that this forum is stricter than others. It's mainly to keep things from getting repeated and to save people time, though, and it works nicely that way. Developing is hard work. BTW, no one's head is gonna explode about this, but questions like this are probably best off in the Q&A section.
So, to answer your question, the RAM is halved, the storage is more readily accessible but also halved... is it worth the $50 dollars you save? Sure! It has the same specs and price of the Kindle fire, but with SD storage as well, and the Fire works just fine with 512 mb of RAM.

No the RAM is indeed halved. All of the mainstream tech sites are reporting this, it's not a rumor.
As for partitioning, Nook Tabs are veeery picky about partition schemes, nso that's kinda dangerous. But the current alpha of CM7 gets you better access to the storage, and future releases are planned to allow full access.
my appolgies. tis a problem i usualy have figuring out which forum to post in, this seemed like the likely canidate since there were allready so many posts about the nook tablet 8gb. I will try to keep in mind that this is for tech questions only.
Thank-you very much for the feedback.
For $50 twice the ram and more storage (at least when you put CM7 on it). it seems easily worth it.
My opinion - definitely not worth it.
I got CM7 running on it, and I can see just how important it is.
You won't be running BN's ROM forever, and when you switch to CM7 (with CM9 coming soon, it seems), you really gonna wish you had that RAM, trust me.
I bought a NT last week on Ebay from B&N for $199. Not sure if they are still on sale, but you might check.
If it was a 1GB RAM / 8 GB storage deal, I'd have said the Kindle Fire had some real competition.
As it is, I'd definitely go for the 16 GB version. Not because of the extra storage, but those extra 512 MB in RAM are going to make a difference down the road. What was B&N thinking? Their real advantage over the Fire (RAM) is now gone!
Personally I'd shell out the extra few bucks for the RAM as well. If it were just the storage being reduced, I'd go with it, but the RAM is too important, imo.

They're thinking that many consumers don't seem to know or care about the RAM (or other advantages of the Nook hardware), they just look at the price tag and $199 for the Fire beats $249. I hope it helps, though they've got a mountain to climb to overcome the Amazon ecosystem and Appstore.
With half the RAM and half the storage, NT loses most of it's advantages over Kindle Fire. The only advantage left is the microsd slot.
If I had to pick between 8GB NT and Kindle Fire, I'd take the fire because it offers more 'out of the box' content.
I totally stand corrected. I only saw the storage was being halved... yeah if the RAM is indeed halved then $50 is not a good enough discount for both of those hits.
If only I'd known this 2 days ago when I bought an 8GB version while being in the USA... Figured the 8GB less flash wasn't a big deal if you're using an SD card anyway, and not knowing about the RAM I "saved" some bucks. Now I'm back in Belgium with an 8GB Nook, with half the RAM too, and at the moment unable to run CM... Great
Anyway, I hope someone can get it to root and/or run CM soon!

rootability (at least currently) also looks questionable
I certainly don't know the NT well, but I just helped my father in law get a 8GB tablet configured for its basic functionality. I'd like to be able to set it up to run non-BN sanctioned android apps, and from what I have found there is currently no known way to put go launcher or something similar in place that will allow it to be used for general android apps. This is a huge drawback, IMO. Hopefully in a reasonable time there will be some workarounds, but from the searches I have done, this is not currently doable. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
My father-in-law didn't want to put up the extra 50 bucks and I didn't realize at the time that there was much difference other than the extra storage. I had just assumed that with a 32GB SD card that it would be more than enough memory, but it seems there are other issues since it uses the new 1.4.2 OS too. It looks like B&N is deadset to make sure users can't use it for anything other than their apps. I'm thinking that he should just return the 8GB NT and go for the 16GB version instead.
They have figured out how to boot off an SD card for the 8G, now they are moving that over to the rooting SD versions and the recovery versions.
It will take a little bit of time but I think we will see a lot of progress in this next week.

I actually agree very much with this. The Kindle Fire's also ahead in terms of custom ROMs since it's not locked up. I chose the Nook Tablet (16 GB version) because I could buy it from my school bookstore and also use it with textbooks from my school.
If you have to choose between 8GB Nook Tab and 16GB Nook Tab, go with the 16 GB one. But if you're choosing between an 8GB Nook Tab and a Kindle Fire, I'd go with the Fire.
RAM use vs storage??

What is the issue with ram vs storage? Sorry for such a newb question (I am a brand new B), but I don't know what the ram is dedicated for. Is it for OS only?

Okay, this is a common misconception about computer storage vs. memory. They're not really the same thing, although the words used to describe them are very similar.
RAM/Memory = How much your computer can keep loaded up temporarily. Think of it as how much someone could be thinking about at once - RAM is important for a computer or device to be able to multi-task.
Storage/Disk space = How much information a computer can recall. Think of it as how much someone could remember.
Now, storage allows you to have more files on your device, but RAM allows your device to be more powerful and run more applications at once.

Nook Tablet vs. Nook Color

I'm looking for a cheap Android Tablet and I know there are mods for both the Nook Color and Tablet, however the Tablet specifications are higher based on my searches.
My question is twofold: Is there *that* much of a performance difference between the Tablet/Color and: Which one is more customizeable (In the form of Root/Recovery/ROM development, etc.) and (ok twofold and a half!): Which would you recommend on a budget?
Thanks!
I apologize in advance if this question has been asked-I did not see it during my searches through the forums.
Performance on the 16GB Nook tablet is noticeably better than the Nook Color. I'm not sure about the 8GB, 512mb ram Nook tablet, but I'd imagine it has better performance, but a bit more limitation. With that said, development on the Nook Color far exceeds that of the Nook Tablet; its been out longer and wasn't anywhere near as heavily locked down as the Nook Tablet, which has hindered a lot of development of the Nook Tablet.
Nevertheless, despite limited developers on the Nook Tablet, the development is solid. CM7 is very stable. CM9 is also very stable, with the exception of hardware acceleration (no Netflix, not sure about HD youtube).
I'd say if you go Nook Tablet, go the full distance and get the 16GB. Or if you can wait, wait for the rumored Google Nexus Tablet that is supposed to be 7" and around $200.
it really depends on your expectations.. on a tight budget a refurb nook color for 99 is your best bet.. but i think youll have regrets so i really suggest saving up 300 get the 16gb at best buy with the geek squad warranty.
If I were to buy a tablet today..not back in nov. when I bought my NT, I would probably go with this..

Galaxy tab 2 7" running ICS. It has everything we are trying to get, plus it already running 4.0.3. at the $249 price point with expandable memory it is a
pretty nice device. I thought it was very smooth and responsive and I wouldn't have to hack it to get what I wanted. It has been fun to learn the rooting process and messing around, but in the end I wish that I would have waited if I knew this was going to be on the market so soon. I am sure it is lacking some things, but it was hard to see just by the few minutes I messed with it. Good luck deciding. One other thing for me is that I don't use BN content so the Galaxy tab at the same price is very interesting.
I worked at B&N and I can tell you by experience I would not recommend the Nook Color to anyone, and I told this to my managers- I despised it.
When Nook Tablet came out, I changed my opinion on it.
Moral of the story is, stock wise- nook tablet performs substantially better than the Nook color.
However, I cannot tell you how CM7 works on the NC.
I had a Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and I took it back. Most everything about it was fine except this: There was no option to move apps to the sd card. I tried two transfer apps from Google Play and neither of them worked. The tablet is supposed to have 8GB of storage, but after you subtract the OS and Samsung's additions, there is only a little over 4GB left.
A comment on the internet said that this transfer problem was a "feature" of ICS. If anyone knows if this is true, or if there is a way around it, I would certainly like to know.

...Interesting-I hadn't heard about the Google Nexus Tablet. I'm ultimately trying to find a tablet to play with that has decent performance under $200....(Ideally under $150, but that may not be realistic)....
...Maybe that'll make B & N push down the price of the Nook Tablet
Overstock. Com has the Nook Colors (refirbished) for $135, and the Tablet 16 Gb (also refurb) for $199. I'll got a refurb Tablet from them and it looks and works fine.
And yes, the Tablet 16 Gb is noticeably faster than the Color; both running CM7.

ya, I thought I saw some NC on Ebay for less than that (Like $99, and I thought that was high, but I don't admittedly know the value in relation to this price)
Go with the NT. There's one being sent to an Elite Recognized Developer who works on the binary level as we speak, so it's only a matter of time before everything gets unlocked.
