Looking for an app to map signal strength and at a set location - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi we have installed a new network and i want to get an idea of the signal in different areas of the building.
Is there an app that i can use either that i can walk around and it records the strength on a map, or something that i can walk to a point, click a button it takes a screenshot of the wireless strength and the location .
Cheers

Connection priority

anyone knows how to make the wifi take priority in internet access whenever it is turned on and available at the same time with an edge connection, i always have to go to comm manager and turn off the data then turn on wifi to access that wifi speed.. thank you
Some helpful information that might apply to your question can be found at:

<snip>
when enabled, WiFi takes priority over UMTS connection, so even if you have them both up, the phone will choose the wireless network, unless you are trying to browse to a web site which was added to 'exclusions list' (like your operator's home page).
but, only if you have changed the default settings to set that WiFi connects you to the Internet. Which is not the default.
To do so you have to go into the Settings -> Connections -> Network Cards -> Network Adapter.
</snip>
I have found this information on several different forums with several different folks and use cases posted. I also think that you might get some milage out of the "comm mgr pro" or "IP Dashboard" applications as well...
Hope this helps,
Bob
Thank you Bob, ill mess with it a little more and post feedback, that was helpful
Thanks again

Out of curiosity, I have wifi and 3G active in Comm Manager.
Start IE and launch a site, discovered wifi has the priority over 3G.

i only have edge, no 3g for me how did you know which had priority? i would because of edge speed over the wifi speed.. what about 3g, is it almost as fast as wifi, browse quick?

Simple, I have both activated, move near and away my router range.
When the Wifi signal is weak, the service provider (3G, my case) takes over.
Otherwise when the Wifi signal is strong, the 3G never get to activate.
Maybe others had a better and different approach.
All telco service signal should be available unless you are in fringe area.

oh cool, yea this sounds like the way to go so far, noone has come up with a better solution yet? maybe benchmarking the speeds of each stil it depends on your cable provider (wifi i mean)

GPS reception strength

Just wondering for current X10 owners. What kind of reception strength do you guys get using an app like GPS status when GPS is set to standalone without any AGPS assist at all.
my GPS is set to automatic, but I have disabled any network data, even when am not online through wi fi, GPS locks up pretty quick,I guess in about five seconds. though sometimes it takes a little more and rarely I have to restart the phone to get a fix

[Q] Problem with running apps when leaving WIFI zone

I'm having an issue that has been bothering me. I run Etrade Pro with streaming data and charts, and when I leave my home, it does not automatically cut the wifi and switch to LTE or 4g. My app stops and says there is no data. This has happened a lot and I wonder if there are some settings that need to assure that mt cell signal automatically kicks in when Wifi cuts out.
ANother problem is that if I approach an area where there is wifi, the phone connects, and i usually get a data issue again.
I also got the same problem when i stream a video while on wifi and then leave the wifi zone, so I know it is not an Etrade app specific problem,
Any advice would be appreciated. What I am having to do is manually shut off wifi and then restart the app when the 4g kicks in, and I know the phone is designed to handle this for me.

I'm not sure this is something we have control over, I was reading over a white paper qualcomm wrote on the matter: http://www.qualcomm.com/media/documents/files/3g-wifi-seamless-offload.pdf
Our phone is 3GPP R8 however, I'm not sure at&t's network supports dual stack mobile IP, so therefor the handoff between wifi and 3g would have to interrupt data.
WHat bothers me is that I just came from an Iphone4 and the iPhone switched from wifi to cell, and my Etrade App kept running. There may have been a momentary lag, but i didn't have to close the app and start it again.
Let me look into it more when I get home. At work youtube is blocked on the company network so I can't test if a video continues between handover here.
WHen I leave my home and know that I am out of wifi range, I still see the wifi symbol on the home screen but it looks like there are no bars of strength. It's like the thing is still trying to draw data through wifi that is well out of range.
Frustrating.

So if the wifi symbol is on the status bar that means the phone is still connected to the wifi (or at least thinks it is).
I was not able to reproduce your problem with youtube when I was home. I started a video on wifi in my home, and then walked out the front door and down the hall until it lost the connection, the wifi symbol disappeared and it just had to re-buffer a little bit after it switched to LTE then the video continued.

Open Garden

I went to connect to my home wifi and I saw Open garden unsecured with a better signal then my home router show up after the scan. The weird thing is that I know this is for mobile phones and none of the phones in my house have that app installed. I have never seen this network show up before so its out of the blue. Im weirded out that I am in better range with it then my home network. Does anyone else find this weird? Can I trace where its coming from?
There are wifi analyzers on the market that will give you actual signal strength and you can usually walk around and get a sense of where it is by how the signal is reacting. I wanna say open signal map actually tried to tell you a direction of a wifi signal, but it didn't work that well from what I remember.
I don't know what open garden is, you got a public wifi service? I don't see why , if you not going to connect to it, it would mess with anything, as long as it's on a different channel than your router.
Open Garden is the name of the developer that has the app "WiFi Tethering" on the market. Chances are it's someone's android device using that app to wirelessly tether. I used it before back in the day and by default it hotspot would be named Open Garden.

[Q] Way to boost or stop wifi signal strength checking or low signal warnings?

My wifi on my glacier has a low signal strength, but even at low signal it still works fine, however I think maybe that wifi-calling is a little too sensitive when alerting me the connection signal is weak. It will disable Tmobiles Wi-fi calling app, even if your wifi is still working, when it drops below a certain signal level.
So is there some sort of app or hack that can disable or relax androids handling of the wifi signal strength warnings system wide?
Or a way to boost tx power a bit?
anyone?
Bump
