[Q] Power button menu additions? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

First off I would just like to say I purchased the Note last week outright, never have I has so few regrets after spending $600 on a phone or any electronics. After coming from Xperia devices for the last 5 years the Note is a refreshing change.
Anyways to the point, when the power button is held on an Xperia device there are additional options such as "reboot and take screen shot", Does anyone know how to add these to the power button options, the reboot option on the Xperia play was added via a CMW flashable zip file. Is there anything simaler to this with the note? I miss both of these options so very much.
Cheers

The "quick boot" app in market works fine and will get you in recovery .....also tapping home plus power takes a screenshot.

Yeah Rom Toolbox also contains a "rebooter" option which will alow restart as well as boot into recovery, was just hoping someone around here had a solution aside from having to open an app or widget option. Perhaps a zip file to flash. Anyways, not a big deal. Hopefully someone with some more development experiance then I will do it eventually. Might check the other galaxy forums.
Thanks though.

If you flash ics, it comes with the reboot option. If you want certain ones, check out roms, usually devs bake it into their ROMs.

What the hell was samsung thinking? (vlingo rant)

So I just got my new SGS2 on ATT a few days ago.
I normally like to use the phone stock, without rooting or anything for a few days before doing anything, so i can base my performance off that. (battery life, speed, features, etc.)
I am sad to say this phone is horrible stock. The first and most glaring mistake that samsung made is this Vlingo bs.
I very often double tap the home button to get to the home screen (one tap to exit app, second tap to bring me to my home screen) and now all i hear is "what would you like to do"
A few times while i was in class, i had my phone on silent mode, and 3 times i heard that goddam voice.
And there is no way to turn it off!!!!! are you kidding me samsung? Not everyone (probably no one) wants this crappy app annoying the crap out of them all day. And at least give people the option to disable it if they want to.
I personally wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone who doesnt want to root their phone. You'd think with what happened with the captivate, samsung would have wisend up, but of course not.
You should probably be paying attention in class ;-)
Just because the phone has different actions to buttons doesn't make it crap. I agree though, they should allow you to disable it.
It was the first thing I removed once rooted, the thing is so annoying!

Perhaps you should answer, and tell vlingo exactly what you'd like it to do (or where it should go.)
when i was on stock this was never an issue for me. i have never hit the home button twice to get home. a friend has been on stock for a long time and never had the problem either. why hit home twice, once works
but yes being an android you should have the option to remove or customize it.
i for one like the voice talk app for when i am driving
That is indeed annoying. I am getting mine tomorrow and I am all ready to root it. In Galaxy Tab though, you have to hold down on the search button to activate vlingo. Even though I don't usually press home button twice, that can be annoying...
lol, out of habit from using crappy phones and a low patience level, I happen to hit the home button about 50 thousand times while the screens load.
I actually like the vlingo app. it is pretty competent most of the time and I haven't found a better solution yet, but I agree they should give you the option to turn it off.
My girlfriend sgs2 never had such a thing, though it was australian/telstra so perhaps it wasn't included.
But I know your pain, I used to continually bring up voice commands on my motorola milestone 2 and it would blast me with "please say a command". So annoying

As a temporary fix, there's the option of changing the Vlingo message. Mine now says "Whaddya want now?" on the home button double-tap. Perhaps you could change it to just several spaces? I'm curious to see whether it would work, but I'd rather not annoy my cow-orkers by messing around with it. Sshhhhhhh ...
I totally forgot about this problem, lol oh man that made me mad when it popped up every time.
Just root it.

As mentioned above, you only need to hit the home button once to return to home. Instead of yelling at Samsung for making a double tap actually do something, besides making sure Zombies are dead, just applaud that they've improved things enough that you only have to hit it once to get home.

I was almost positive I disabled it somehow but it's been a while and I wasn't sure. I remember doing it the first day because I hated that double home tap crap.
ended up just installing a custom rom, so no problem.
But for the average user, this is super annoying. And i searched around everywhere to see if i could disable it.
I for one am one of those people that presses buttons almost as a nervious tick, like tapping your feet or something like that, so thats what annoyed me the most about it.

Yes it looks like you can disable it, but you can't.
There is a checkbox that says: "Double tap", "Automatically prepare your device for voice commands in Voice talk"
Unchecking it does not disable running Vlingo.
The only times I opened Vlingo, was accidental. It's a huge flaw of the Samsung developers to have this incredibly annoying app hardwired to a button. Even more so the HOME button! Why not attach this app to double-tapping the search button? Or a long press? At least that would never happen accidentally.
For me this is by far the biggest annoyance on this phone (also because it lags the single-tap of the home button).

S-Voice does not obey some commands

I have Samsung Galaxy Note and have updated the ROM to [Rom]~[UCLF5]~TEAM PERFECTION'S ICS OBJECTION |06/26 |
Noted following issues so far.
1. S-Voice port works most of the time but does not obey some commands (e. "Open Calculator"). It recognizes the command, confirms it but Calculator does not open up. I would say this problem is not restricted to this ROM though. I did try one from OnlyOne as well as independent install of the same.
That said everything else seems to work well.
2. It is not rooted but you can use CWM and flash a separate package that will Root the ROM. You need to search for the right ROM. One that works well is Superuser-i717-ICS-signed.zip available via
3. 5x 3 applets can not be docked . Google search is available on all seven pages and that I believe is causing this problem. Small Widgets are OK but larger one have problem
3. Do not see Recovery option is restart/reboot menu (when you press power button) . This is not enabled by default. Figuring out how that would work.
What? Huh? Title does not match post. Guessing you are reviewing the TEAM PERFECTION'S ICS OBJECTION.
1) S Voice is just like any of these voice apps. More of a PIA than anything.
2) Search for the right ROM to root the ROM? Try post 19 of the thread (on the second page) for the link.
3) Haven't tried it so not sure.
3) You already said 3. :silly: Recovery on reboot is not a standard on any ROM unless modded with an app. Simply hold volume up and volume down while holding power. Release power after vibrate. Release volume after you see the text on screen.
Some other weirdness and S-Voice
Reason why I said S-Voice does not obey some commands is because "OPEN CALCULATOR" is one of the commands that S-Voice helps tells you to try. Many things work but this command, even after being recognized does not work.
I also noted that Cell Phone does not completely poweroff even after choosing power off options. Lower Home Navigation Bar (that has Home, Menu, Back and Search Options), remains lit even after screen goes dark.
If you are having these issues and they bother you then I would choose a diferent ROM. Electron's stock version does not have these problems.
This belongs in the Objection ROM thread, not here.

2. Agree. I used the same file to root.
3. Agree. Can't create larger widgets in launcher mode (those weather widgets).

Many of the S-Voice commands are looking for Samsung's proprietary apps and other things only available on the SIII and not the ones available in the ROMs, so many will not work unless you have a stock SIII ROM. Whether or not this can be worked around, I don't know.

[Mod] 3 dot menu removal. Button remap (Coming Soon)

I have got rid of the 3 dot menu bar which is easy(zip file posted). But trying to remap recent apps was a fail. When I try to remap recent to menu it would affect home button not working so in the zip is the file the original file to remap buttons if you want to take a look and see if anyone here can remap recent to menu. AND eventually me or someone else will figure out long press remaping.
As well I figured out using the GMD Gestures app from playstore, you can create your own gesture and set it to recent apps if you want.
FYI for the 3 dot menu bar removal it requires you to delete the build.prop via recovery file manager than flash. For some reason it wont replace the file. So delete than flash and same with the button remap file in the zip.
THE BUTTON REMAP IS JUST FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LOOK AT THE FILE TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIX.
THE NO MENU FILE IS A FLASHABLE TO GET RID OF MENU BAR.
well to fix the files not being overwritten via the flashable i changed your updater-script to /dev/block/mmcblk0p32 vs /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 but also didn't have any luck on the mod working either..the first time it made my recents button basically do nothing my home button seem to just select things and then backed as usual.. and then i edited the .kl file thinking maybe since you had things things right next to eachother and not on each line it caused a error i just had the menu (3 dots) issue disappear but the recents key worked as usual.. maybe just user error.

I agree with you that the recent apps button should be menu on tap and recent apps on long press.

I will pm him and see if he can help with long press.
He fixed long press on home but that is already google now which I like. I'm asking him about long press on recent key.
Actually the modified build.prop is what gets rid of 3 dot menu bar.
What's the reasoning behind making the recent apps button do menu upon tap and actually show recent apps upon long press? That seems logically backwards to me.
Maybe its just because I use the recent apps button more than any other, but it seems like it should be like it is stock and then upon long press show the menu. Isn't that how HTC did it officially on their update to the One?
Obviously its a matter of personal preference - glad to see someone working on this (thank you!) because that bar is driving me nuts haha.

So if I flash this MOD ... will this just remove the annoying 3 dot menu on the bottom of my phone that comes up on all the screens/apps that I use.
Or am I going to lose the functionality of pressing recent apps, home, back?

Well since my zip file does not replace files then all you do is delete build.prop via recovery file manager and flash. It won't mess with capacitive buttons unless you deleted that file too but don't so only 3 dots will go away.

Probably because you have had to long press for recent apps since android cupcake. Its natural.
So if I am following this thread correctly, this WILL completely remove the 3 dotted menu, HOWEVER, we have NO access to getting in to an app menu until the recent button can be remapped. Correct?

yes or you can download GMD Gestures app from play store and set a gesture to menu. Thats what I do.
So like mentioned above, the 3 dot menu will be gone and capacitive buttons will work as normal?
and use the GMD gesture app to get into menus of applications?
can we revert this process if something happens. like replace the files it removes.
obviously in a ZIP bc we cant push them with root explorer yet

But that was a long press of the home button correct? A lone button dedicated to recent apps functionality wasn't introduced until ICS. Considering the vast majority of general users(not us XDA types), I would argue that most people had never heard of the recent apps feature until el Goog stuffed it down everyone's throat when they shifted into the new 3 button system. I feel like that has become key to the operation of Android and considering the changes from 4.1 to 4.2 Google intends to keep it that way and build around it.
I know this is a mod that really isn't for the general public, but I feel like Google is a smart company. Just browse through their dev guidelines and you can see that they take every single detail into account and invest HEAVILY into finding the best way to operate Android. -I don't feel like this design change was a shot in the dark for them.
Of course, this would all be moot if HTC had decided they weren't 'too cool' for on-screens.
Sorry, ill get off my UX soapbox haha
So there is no 3 dot removal yet? Where does it place it to?

There is. The mod I posted removes 3 dot but you need to delete build.prop via recovery file manager before flashing because it will flash a modified build.prop.
Also using GMD Gesture app for menu.

[REQ] Swap Recents / Options key

Hello everyone! I just got a brand new Galaxy Note 4 (Exynos) coming from a Galaxy S4. The "new' left softkey now triggers the Recents app instead of being a Menu (Options) key and that makes me sad. I'm not much of a multi-tasker, I'm not going to use it often, but I do like using the Options key in Chrome, picture galleries and basically everywhere since it's easier for me to reach it. I know most apps now have the "three dots" menu, but it's usually very high on the screen (hard to reach on a Note 4) and it's also non-intuitive. One can just press the left soft key with eyes closed, while you need to precisely see where you click if using app's "three dots". So I discovered that if I "hold" the left soft key, it would actually bring the Options menu, but I would like to swap the behavior. One press = Options, Hold = Recent.
I'm on a stock Kitkat 4.4.4 now, running ART, fully rooted. Can someone post(make) a CWM/TWRP .zip to address this problem?
PS: I tried to search for such feature here on the Themes and Apps section, but couldn't find a solution.
Thanks!
Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646304 and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337229 I think that the logic is the same, look if there are similarities.
Yay, thanks! Indeed in "/system/usr/keylayout" there was a file called "Generic.kl" and inside of it #254 was called "APP_SWITCH". I changed that to "MENU", restarted and... the button now acts like a Menu key, just like on my old Galaxy S4. For some reason the "hold" function of this key changed to "S Finder" (a search app) and I would like to make it "APP_SWITCH" in order to fully accomplish my goal of swapping those two functions, but still I think now it's a little bit better since I really care more for the Option key, especially on this big screen where reaching the "three dots" menu in upper right corner is not that easy.

It's not as bad as one would think.
Alot of them you could greenify(greenify can function as a xposed module or a stand-alone app), like Wanam.
Also, modules like greenify and boot manager would save you resources and would probably even-out with the resource demands of the framework.
IMO, Xposed is an absolute must-have for a device that's efficient, customized, and blazing fast.
Maybe. Still last time I checked it wasn't available for Samsung TouchWiz based ROMs on Lollipop. And I'm considering the opportunity to step up to the Lollipop upgrade finally and it won't be compatible anyway. I mean I surely can install it now, but I don't like the idea of getting used to it since I won't be able to use it once I upgrade to LP.
I think that you must change menu to app_switch

Remap App Switch To Menu

So ive been search around for a while now on how to fix this. And to anyone that chimes in and says why do you need the menu button obviously you don't use older apps, the new touch button on the screen is a huge annoyance especially since i've used my phones this way since my first S1. Regardless this is how i want it and so do many other people.
Currently this is only for a rooted phone
I have figured out how to remap the left soft key from the App Switcher/Multi window over to the old style menu key. Instructions for that can be found here
But now i don't have any way of switching to my currently open apps, after remapping the left key, the longpress now takes you to search. and long pressing on the home button also takes you to another variation of the search (both i dont use nor want). I want to be able to remap my left softkey on longpress to open up currently open apps (APP_SWITCH) and it would be nice if long pressing on Home could open the Task Manager as it did on my S3.
As far as i can tell editing of the longpress function is done via a Policy edit. Read about that HERE
Keep in mind that post is from 2014 so i have no idea if the internal code is still being handled the same way, i couldn't even find that file on my S6, but i did find a file called SEPOLICY in my root folder using ROOT EXPLORER. Do any of you know more about this and how I can go about changing this? im sure its a code level adjustment. Thanks
Long-press home button can be controlled without root easily.
Check out this app:

I use the long-press home to get to my last used app.
I wonder if I can remap my buttons to launch any other apps.. Will have to tinker around a bit.

lol f off
If you guys use Dropbox, how do you get to the menu with SORT, etc.. without a menu key. This is making me crazy. I'm using nova launcher and there is no floating menu key. ????
The problem is if not every developer uses it, it's inconsistent.
It often helps if the options etc. In apps are on the top, so you don't have to fidget with your phone to reach the top or use two hands.
The menu button on every app is positioned somewhere else, so I find the op wanting it justified.
All in one gestures let's you remap every key, for some odd reason on my s4 I can remap the menu key, but on the S6 for some odd reason the option of the menu key has vanished in the same app:what:

Hi pal. Hope it helps. Make 254 button remap, then install nova launcher, in tab gestures select long press menu and then recent app. Profit! Now once tapped you have menu button, long pressed - recent apps.
So, i made it, i use it. It works.
