[Q] Upgrading to Leaked Ics Firmare vs using the patch method - HTC Rezound

I am pondering which route to take to get to an ics rom. I recently received a refurb unit, and considering i am coming from ground zero, I want to take the most efficient path to ics. I don't know wether to upgrade to the leaked firmware, or should i simply use a rom that is patched to work with the old firmware. I am open to all arguments.

I personally used the leaked firmware since it was radios and all. The patch is to keep your existing radios and PRL version, but to be able to use newer roms. My rezound with the new radios has better coverage than my wife's which has the original from the ota. Since you are already starting from the ground up I say flash the ruu for the leak.

I am using the leaked ICS RUU and it is working fine for me. I also get better coverage with the new radios.

Since you're at square one, I'd install the leaked firmware.
...my $.02

Aren't there fairly serious problems with screen-on CPU usage, though? There are several threads outlining issues with the new firmware. I am using CleanROM 4.3 with the patch, and my battery life is slightly better than it was before. I'd be very wary of flashing the new firmware until the official OTA, or until s-off is achieved.

unless you have a problem with the radio, go with the patch
so that you can always go back to stock gb when you want or need.

The on-screen cpu usage is not from the firmware its from the kernel. So whether you are running the patch/old firmware or the new firmware, you have the issue as long as you are running the new kernel.
The new ICS does give pretty outstanding battery life, as long as the screen is off. but as soon as you turn the screen on your battery meter turns into a countdown timer. I can go all night without my phone on charger while I'm asleep and it only uses about 5-8% battery in 8 hours. That's pretty good. But during the day while I'm using it with screen on battery life is garbage and the battery gets really hot.
My suggestion is to stay on the OTA gingerbread as long as you can unless you're just really dying for ICS. Wait for the official ICS update with a better kernel. But if you go with ICS I would use the old firmware and patch method. So it makes it easier to go back.

+1 to that. Until they get s-off setup for everyone I would recommend this as well. I toiled forever on whether to do they leak or not. I saw just as many people saying it helped as hurt. At first I chalked it up to the noob factor but once I saw people that looked like experienced flashers having problems I held off. The roms now have old firmware patches so you can run them without the leak. I've ran Clean Rom, Nils and Bored without any problems at all. I've even been able to run the Sense 4.0 roms using the patch. Battery leaves alittle to be desired on some of them but we don't have sources for kernels so that's to be expected. Just my $.02 but it's your phone and the choice is up to you.

Agreed. Just install the patch.

Another vote for the patch. You can always switch to the leaked firmware if you want in the future but you can't downgrade. I recommend holding off upgrading firmware until S-OFF is released. If you are happy with battery life/signal, etc don't mess with it.

I'm on the patch, working great, got 1 day, 18 hours and 30 min last weekend with 19% left. Of course that is very light use but I have never seen that before. I have no problems with coverage or radios

Thanks for all of your pragmatic input. I've upgrade to the leaked firmware on multiple devices, and was tempted to do the same to this one. You guys pretty much reinforced my feelings of trepidation and resovle to obstain from going as far away from Stock gingerbread as possible. It just lowers my inhibitions with its uglyness when placed side by side with my old device running ics. Battery life is paramount though.

I concur... This new leak seems to be a quagmire of sorts with an inscrutable connotation with it's apocryphal results. I show no vexation in calamitous consummations, due to acquiring s-off. I can ascertain that the commendable course of action would be to accede the repercussion, unperturbed: until another advantageous recourse ameliorates.

Assuming that s-off comes in a near term time-frame. We don't all have an extra Rezound to play with, and constantly tweak to work as a daily driver. It's perfectly reasonable to wait for s-off.

Why are all roms laggy?

Hi,
I have came from a rooted Htc Desire to this Samsung phone, i never tried the stock samsung rom, i just rooted and flashed a custom rom straight away.
I have flashed about 30 roms and have not fiund one that is not lag free.
Why is this?
Cheers.
If you tried ics then all of them are not fluid till now...

Mine is very fluid...
To OP, lag is usually caused by kernels more than it is ROM's. I would suggest you do all wipes and flash a kernel cleaning script before changing kernels etc.

This also depends on the firmware version.
The first ics were slow at scrolling... but this is improved in later version.
Also every version has its problems.
Hi,
I always do a fresh wipe and use the kernel cleaning script, i have just flashed the Omega rom with the speedmod kenel and although they are great i always have a slightly laggy home screen and the app menu is the same.
Also the homescreen button has a bit of lag when you switch on.
I have had this problem with just about every rom i have tried.
Anyone recommend a rom that is smooth?
My phone is still laggy with all roms i've tried so far, mainly the app list screen, home screen and contacts screen.
Are there Hboots for this phone like there was for the Desire?
Cheers.

Which roms did you actually try?
No such thing as hboots on samsung phones.
Hi,
I have probably tried all roms up until 3 days ago, the most stable rom i tried was probably lightning rom flashed through Odin but was still not very smooth, i am about to flash Omega 9 rom with the latest speedmod kernel and see how i get on with that.
No ICS ROM is going to be perfect, and I think you should commemorate the work that developers have done to get the ROM's up to the standard they are, considering they have to work with little to no source code from Samsung. Samsung is always very slow at releasing source code, and therefore developers have to work with leaked ROM's which are still in development themselves.
I'm not trying to hate, I'm just saying that all ROM's will have their issues at the moment, and simply stating, "Why are all ROM's laggy?" is very general and very untrue, because I use Simplistic ROM, and I have not experienced any lag since flashing the latest version a week ago. Most ROM's now are getting to an excellent standard and great performance and battery life.
Chris.

I remember the GB stock roms were pretty lag free usually. But a huge battery drainer and for me, ugly(TW).
If you really really really really want a lag free(almost) experience, get an iphone. Not the best suggestion but i bet that most of us android users out there right now experiences more lags than the norm iphone user. I have my galaxy s2 and although all my friends and family has an iphone, im greatly satisfied with this little wizz. rocking latest CM9. and not switching phones anytime soon.
Or maybe flash something GB
MIUI
You might have already tried MIUI Roms for your Desire?
Galnet GB 2.3.23 is fully lag free and stable......
ICS MIUI also well accepted and appreciated by the people now, but to wait for a fully bug free one for couple of weeks more...
Thanks for the replies!
iam on stock 2.3.5 wiv 385+ apps all big time an my phone is neva laggd or crashed i get a decent batt life iam pretty satisfied wiv it,i tried heavy mutitasking but still all is good , don kno wat prblm ur facing...may the kernel is not matching wiv ur desired rom...pm me for any comments or doubts
I use this, GB with no laggs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422742&highlight=tweaky
There are more recent kernels, so try: Siyah, N.E.A.K. or new ikki (all of them are top noch).
And flash latest jKay:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154278&highlight=jkaymod
Try to make it lagg
Edit: Sorry I just checked that it was uploaded on multiupload(dead). So if you wish I can upload it with all new stuff added.

Is odd, surely depends on the rom you have installed, are you having the same problem with a stock firmware?

I recently had to get a warranty exchange after my charging port stopped working a week after upgrading to ICS. When I asked if I'd have to re-update the new device I was told to hold off because there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out in terms of the compatibility with this device.
That's fine with me because I did a master reset and all and still had the slow speeds, sporadic behavior, black screens, etc. :sly:

I do not think its a fluke. ICS has a lot of improvements but there is no way its as fast as Gingerbread. I know most people will say I am wrong but Gingerbread is much snappier and its also more simplistic. ICS also eats up more ram but besides speed and ram its very much improved as an OS.

I disagree with this, but only to a certain extent. I have noticed varying amount of lag on both GB and ICS. ICS does seem to use up more RAM on consistent basis, but that alone doesn't really mean that it is slower or indicate that it is the slower of the two OS. GB had its problems for me as well.
Overall I enjoy the user experience much more with ICS than I did with GB. That's not too say that its consistently faster, but overall Ill deal with a few quirks for the upgraded OS.

Same problem here, mate. I loved the Note with GB, but it's been buggy as all hell with ICS. The biggest problem is looking at the blank home screen with nothing but wallpaper for up to 30 seconds after closing an app. It's a lot better using GoLauncher rather than TouchWiz, but it still suffers from a lot of lag. Hopefully they'll push out an OTA fix to better regulate resources soon.

even if you don't want to run a custom rom, you should at least do the following:
1. Use Odin to flash the latest cwm recovery
2. Boot to recovery, flash superuser to root
3. Clear cache and dalvik
4. Reboot
5. Profit
Then again, running a custom rom would be an even better idea...

If stock ics is too slow, I think a nice launcher could help if you're not addicted to Samsung widgets. Nova prime or Adwex can speed the home screen up a bunch. Especially with options to reduce scrolling time etc. I thought the stock ics was perfectly fine. I never had any speed issues or complaints, but I was running a debloated, aligned, deodexed version so maybe that had something to do with it.
Obviously best solution is custom Rom though
Good luck peeps.

Yes, I would recommend it... but your reasoning is flawed, ICS is not an "unstable platform" at all, in fact your shiny, new SGS3 will have ICS on it and work just fine as well. ICS for the Rezound is perfectly stable and I use it every day on two different Rezounds.

I'm having issues switching from WIFI to 3g-4g It's a known ICS issue. I'm running stock and have never modded. I'm sure there is a version running out there that this has been fixed but HTC has not pushed it out yet. I'm sure you are aware of all of this anyways. Should I stick around and learn to mod?

My work Rezound is bone-stock OTA 3.14.605.12, and every radio is enabled all day, it switches between WiFi (multiple networks), 4G, and 3G all the time (several times a day) and it has never had a problem once. In fact, that phone hasn't even been rebooted or powered off in at least a month and it just works perfect. My personal Rezound is running the Global Mode RUU, no problems with that one either...
BTW, if it is a ICS thing (which it isn't), your SGS3 will have the same problem, it is running ICS as well on Verizon! And knowing VZW, you will likely be waiting months to get JB on that device as well.
I am not trying to talk you out of it, sounds like a good deal to me, the Galaxy S3 is an awesome device... but your reasoning, or the reasoning that was explained to you, is flawed.

This has been my experience as well, though I'm not on the Global RUU, I'm on the previous OTA (though I did run the RUU to address some battery drain problems I had). This phone is absolutely aces for me. I switch between 4G, 3G and wifi several times a day, although I will say that I do restart my phone every two days after I charge it completely.
I played with a friend's GS3 last weekend, and I can honestly say I hated the UI. TouchWiz just sucks in my opinion. The device itself was awesome though, and I'm sure I'd love to have one, though I'd either root it and install a JB rom or get a different launcher.

There are two things you have go to realize,

b- they are getting a lot of refurb gs3 back which they are shipping off to rezound customers.

Been around forums for a while, but generally try to figure out things on my own. In this case I can't locate a solution.
I'm running ViperRez atm and 2.27 hboot, s-off. I've tried running Neo's Rage and EclipticRez and end up with same issue every time.....Screen freezes, soft keys still responsive and only fix is to press power to turn screen off then all is well for a few more minutes before it repeats.

I believe that Rage and EclipticRez have Snuzzo's custom kernels on them. I don't know what ViperRez comes with. You might try to up the minimum CPU voltage to 384 from 192, and running a different governor. I've noticed that problem go away for me when I change the CPU clock speed on the low end.
Do you notice it from waking when the screen is unlocked, or does it just happen randomly?
Usually it would occur randomly. I'll tweak the voltage and change governors and see what results I get. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.

Did this help? My g/f's Rezound does this, too. At first I thought it was her case pressing against the touch screen or something making it stick.

Sorry guys you not going to wanna hear this. I didn't want to either 3 months ago when i had to do it. I lost 3G and my screen went hay wire. The fix was pretty much, lock, flash ruu, then re-root and install new custom rom. I have not had a problem sense and still run viral, redux, and eclipt with no issues. Let me know how this works out for you.

When you say "Lock"... Does that imply that you weren't S-OFF and you just relocked the bootloader? What if I already S-OFFed her phone?
I've got the phone running on Page Plus. I haven't got 3G working, nor do I own a SIM card. Don't think this really matters, but figured I'd mention it. I'm going to try tweaking some settings again in DFS tonight. Apparently someone updated the guide and may have the fix for getting data.
My gf is whining about how I need to buy her a better phone, though. Only because this one is glitchy/freezes. A fix for that would spare me the money I'd spend buying another phone. The rezound has amazing potential if I could get rid of the glitch.

If you are s-off you don't need to lock before running the RUU. I would definitely try running the RUU and then putting a custom ROM on there before buying another phone.
My Rezound has been really wonky recently as well. So going back to stock and starting over will fix it? It does stuff like having to press the power button 2 - 3 times for the screen to pop up and is generally really laggy. Sometimes when I start the screen up it pops up for 1 second then goes away then comes back..it's really weird.

Flashed RUU. RUU didn't fix it. I'm still having the same issues described in the first post.
I've tried all suggestions....only conclusion I can come to is that its something to do with Snuzzo's kernel; because only experience the problem with roms running that Snuzzo kernel. Any dev suggestions on configurations that could fix this issue since only a few of us are having these issues?

We're getting 4.3, someday.

Samsung is going to update the Note 2 to 4.3.

Of course, we may not actually see it on Verizon till 5.0 comes out.

I figured this is what they would do, and honestly I dont mind as long as they get on the ball and release it quickly even if the quickly is only to the international version because at least then we will get a port quickly while we wait on Big Red.

There's already a thread on this.
all we need is an international one to leak for our trusted devs to work their magic.

Yes, but with quite a bit of issues and none of the Touchwiz features (Not going to argue if that is a good or a bad thing).
I think most users root to get back to a stock feel, leaving behind TW, etc. As for this nightly, it's stable enough for a dd. After last night's build, the only major issue seems to be the graphical glitches that happen in Gmail and a few other apps. Battery life and overall performance doesn't seem to be an issue.
Users waiting for an official 4.3 TW could be waiting a long time.

I've been a big aosp guy for a while but coming to this phone I am really digging TW. Always heard so much hate on it. Makes stock android feel so plain. Not trying to start a debate but I am excited to here that this phone will eventually get the 4.3 update.

In your opinion, how is the in call volume? thats the major thing keeping me away from ASOP because I use the phone for work and to make calls almost all day
The volume is great now. The maintainer has merged an audio fix and is now a permanent part of the build. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2406788&page=17

Call volumes were really loud. My biggest problem when I played with 4.3 was the graphical glitches. Call me superficial, but they are very annoying and when trying to use logmein ignition, it was unusable because of them.

I was reading about that too. I'll wait. I have a nexus 7 so I have my stock fix... For now. I'll have to wait until its fixed.

I agree that the graphical glitches in 4.3 are annoying but if nobody uses the roms and reports issues and the possible things that trigger them then they will never improve. By the way, what rom were you running?

the paranoid android 4.3, build from last week or so. The graphical glitches apparently are across all aosp ROMs so I don't think its something that will be fixed soon.

I'm running 4.3 and the graphics are the only downside, but someone posted a fix for GPU rendering on page 22 of that thread. Volume and GPS worked great right off the bat.
