Help Needed! - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I've bought a 2 day old archos 101 G9 8gb with 3.2 on it.
my questions are....
1- once i receive it, whats the process of updating it to the 4.0.4?
2- do you think its worth doing the update? or am i safer on 3.2?
3- is there lots of problems with 4.0.4 at the moment?
4- i'll eventually want to root the tablet so that i can put custom roms onto it, whats the best custom rom at the moment? and whats the process to rooting it and getting the rom?
5- I'm based in london, UK but i bought the tablet off someone in Ireland which is also UK, would there be a difference in the english and irish versions?
cheers in advance guys.

1. Just goto Settings > About > Software Update.
2. ICS is working fine, WiFi etc.
3. Same as above.
4. Best ROM at the moment would be [email protected] and the rooting procedure is fairly easy.
Quinny898 made a guide. You can find it in Archos G9 Development
5. They're the same.
Although there is the Archos 101S and 101H. Don't think theres any differences

cheers for the reply, so... your saying the 4.0.4 is stable enough to use now? because i recently see a few threads of people complaining about all sorts of stuff.
when you say there is 101H and a 101S, would there be a way of me finding out which 1 i have? and also, there must be some kind of difference between the 2

And also, the reason i mentioned rooting, was because i used to own a motorola xoom and once that was rooted, there was loads of amazing roms to use, I aint managed to find any nice roms for the archos yet, so apart from the changing rom, is it really worth rooting? what benefits will i get from rooting?

It's worth rooting your tablet just for the apps that need root alone (titanium backup, add removers etc).
Then there's also the advantage of custom rooms.
Also use set CPU or something similar to change the governor as this makes the device a lot more stable (performance works good for me).
Psi.

A lot of those topics were from people who had loads of apps and updated to ICS.
Since your tablet is quite new and you probably don't have too many apps yet, now would be ideal to
update to ICS.
Shano56 made a guide to most things for the A101G9 so you may want to check that too.
Sent using XDA Premium HD from my ICS Powered tablet

Here is Shano56' guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542058
Also, to find what Archos Model you have go to Settings > About > Board Version.
There you'll see A101S or A101H. I've got the S. AFAIK, nothing is different.
Attached you'll find a screenshot of my About.

Actually, I was under the impression that the letter on the end denoted the storage type. H for the 250Gb HDD, and S for the solid state flash drive.

whats solid state flash drive?

In the S models, the data storage is on a memory chip inside the tablet that is similar to a SDcard. In that it has no moving parts, it is called "solid state". I called it a flash drive because the flash drives (or thumb drives, or USB drives) that you plug into the USB port of your computer are made the same way. I named it that way in particular way to tie it into the S on the end of the model number. The S units are the ones that are 8Gb or 16Gb.

[Think Tank] Flash 10.1 on Nexus One

So flash was already demo'd on the nexus one which means there has to be a way of installing it. Now you can download the Flash 10.1 for Linux on their site. and it has included 2 files. 1 is "flashplayer-install" and the other is "libflashplayer.so".
Can we push libflashplayer.so onto the phone and it'll pickup the library or is it more complicated than this... What can we do to make this work?
Its much more complicated than that, there are optimizations that they've done to even make it fast enough to use on a phone, plus the plug-in has to be compiled for the architecture on the phone (ARM) I do wish we could get a leak of the alpha plug-in though.
Ya, I think the only way this is happening is if someone leaks the version we've all been seeing. There's gotta be a leaky faucet somewhere.
We might not need to wait, the Desire (Nexus One minus the Google) has 10.1 Flash baked in...
Beyond me but it could be possible to, along with the Sense UI and whatever else is new and applicable, to port over Flash 10.1 if Google doesn't release it before then.
According to engadgdet the htc desire they demo'd had flash 10.1 so maybe when that rom leaks.
just a quick question : say the Flash 10.1 is released officially , in what form will it come?
an over the air update from google for OS? or just android Market app to be installed?
any ideas?
will it affect browser in any way?
OTA

something like this will have to be an os update because the browser will need to be able to access this lib/plugin along with other apps IMO unless someone can further my knowledge and tell me otherwise
I always thought flash would come as an upddate (perhaps 2.2 Froyo?)
as i've read, flash is already available for developers.
asking google....
Maybe it will be a OTA or it will come along with 2.2 as kyle said. Then again we will have it quicker once someone has a Desire rom leak.

Flash has been on Sense UI as early as the HTC Magic & Hero and when my youtube app stopped playing videos I resorted to playing them in the browser with flash, how come HTC seem to have no problem releasing it? Flash 10.1 must be a lot faster

HTC leans its devices more to the media oriented.
There's a little bit of info from Adobe in this thread:

can someone grab FLASH from the desire rom and figure out how to make it work on CM5.0.2?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=635821
I posted screenshots of flash (Hulu focused) in the apps section. Wasn't sure where to put it... If this place is more relevant then we can just delete my other post (if there are any mods reading =))
Here is the recap:
So I can get Hulu web page to start, and it says "loading" the video but it gets an error message.

Is anyone more informed of why? I know flash != shockwave, not sure if that is the issue. Or is the browser telling Hulu what kind of browser it is. I know that is spoofable. The last thing I can think of some sort of cache issue with the browser? In the settings the max I can set it is 6mb so maybe Hulu won't stream it. If we can get Hulu working on our N1's it would be a huge win. =)

[Q] Issue with SD Card and rooting.

Hi all.
Firstable let me say that this is a great community, and you all are doing great jobs to keep our phones in touch with the newer technologies.
Now lets jump straight to the question/problem.
I have a Samsung Galaxy MINI, GT-5570.
When I bought it, the Android system was Android 2.3.1 Froyo.
Yesterday I updated to 2.3.6 Gingerbread from this link.
I have a 512MB SD Card, and my question is, will I be available to flash this CyanogenMod 7.1.0 with Odin just like it said on the post there, or do I need to do something else before.
Oh, one more little thing, Does the process I did yesterday (Updating to 2.3.6 Gingerbread) is called "root" or no ? Sorry for my stupidness.
I searched for this if there is similar question but wasnt succesful.
Help appreciated.
Also, sorry forgot to ask which ROM do you suggest to me. CyanogenMod, Andro-id, or some other.
I would like to see what people with experience here have to say about this.
Yes, you can flash Cyanogenmod 7 IF you are using any of the Cyanogen mod 7 roms currently.
No wipe is required.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
No, I am not using any kind of ROM.
As I said, I bought my phone some weeks ago, and only recently flashed Android 2.3.6 Firmware from andoidadvices.com .
The previous version was, 2.3.1 Froyo.
Im pretty noob, so that's what I am asking.
What should I do before applying these steps from here
Froyo is 2.2
The steps is provided in the thread that you linked me. Just follow the steps.
PLEASE ask the developer of the rom the steps you should follow to prevent anything wrong.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
Nevermind than, it was only 2.3.1
I would have asked in the original thread but it says I need at least 10 posts in order to be able to post there.
I though posting here might help.
Let's wait for a little bit more and in the meantime try and get my answer in the internet.
Thanks for you availability.
2.3. Is gingerbread...
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
Again, I made mistake. I meant it was 2.2.1 Froyo.
Now I guess in order to flash CyanogenMod 7.1.0 I need to root my phone.
I have a question. Does my 512MB SD Card is enough ?
Internal storage 512mb or external storage?

I tried to download SuperOneClick and when I downloaded it, My Antivirus said this.
What should I do ?
If I clear that file, can I still root the phone successfully ?
And please one more time so I can be assured, Rooting my Galaxy Mini, 2.3.6 Gingerbread with SD Card 512MB, using SuperOneClick will be correct ?
Forgot about antivirus, just disable it. I don't have antivirus in my computer for 4 years.
Yes, you can use a 512mb. But not recommended. Try getting a larger one as you need to backup your rom before fully wipe your device.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
Yeah, I figured it out in another thread that I should just ignore the Antivirus.
I guess I will have to buy a 2GB SD Card before doing this.
It seems it isnt as easy as I thought to root a phone and flash CyanogenMod 7.
Will get a new SD as soon as possible.
Thanks for your help mate. Much appreciated.

Samsung Galaxy s2 or s2 4G

Hello, I'm starting get great interest in this whole flashing/rooting thing on the galaxy, but am not sure if the S2 or S2 4G as in can they both fully work in flashing an what not or does the S2 have more ability to do stuff to it?
Sorry I'm really new to all this and this forum, so I'm quite sure if this is posted in the right spot an what not, Thanks!
EDIT: I'm in Australia an they would be unlocked models, I thought I might put that in there not sure if changes things, Thanks!
Get a I9100 or I9100T rather than the 4G version;
1) At the moment there's only one 4G network in Australia, Telstra's, and 4G coverage isn't fantastic in a lot of places yet.
2) There's bugger all (zero ?) custom firmware available for this phone, so you'll be stuck with stock. As far as we know, firmware for the I9100/T won't work on this phone.
Locked or unlocked makes no difference to anything, apart from the ability to use the phone on any network, obviously.
Thank you so so much for the reply it really helped! I'll get i9100
Probably this weekend but I don't think I can cause of Easter!
Time to Learn how to actually root the phone now.
No worries
Best bit of advice I can give you is read until your eyes fall out. If you understand the process of whatever you're going to do to your phone inside out & follow instructions, it's a really hard phone to mess up/brick. The chances of bricking it increase exponentially depending on how little regard you pay to instructions.
Stickies & CFRoot thread are good places to start.
Good luck

I think I know how to root the phone now
Now I'm at the hard bit of picking the right rom/kernel thing
Once you've rooted the phone, trying roms/kernels is a snap because you can make/restore a backup of a previous setup in CWM in a few minutes. Makes life a lot easier
Important thing is you're doing the research before you get the phone, and that's a good thing
True true, I can't wait to try it all out
help needed
i don't think i can root my galaxy s2, can't seem to find my kernel version thing to root and install CWM info below
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: i9100xxki4
Kernel Version: [email protected]#2
Yes you can. Go back to the CFRoot kernel and have another look. There's a matching kernel there you can use. Before you do tho, have a read of the bit in that thread that starts with "Help ! Which file do I use ?".
Read that bit very carefully.
Thanks, I still can't seem to find the right one, I'm either blind or stupid I'm leading towards both
Found It, i'll let you know if i brick
Got it successfully rooted thank you so much for all you help if you had a donate button I'd click it, just really thank you so much, I'd try custom rom but i need to get a memory card
You don't need an ext SD card. Just make a nandroid backup and save it to the internal SD

How do I make a nandroid backup? Sorry an thank you
Search, read, learn. And don't come back at me & say 'but I did search !".
If you did, you'd have already done a backup by now. All the info you need is in the links I gave you last week or whenever. You just have to look for it. Or do Google searches with XDA appended to your search terms.

Wileyfox Swift 2?

I was on https://cyngn.com/support looking for the Wileyfox Swift stock ROM, when I came across a new device, codenamed 'marmite': Wileyfox Swift 2/Swift 2 Plus. Could this be the next Wileyfox device?
Don't quote me on this but I believe it has better specs than the Swift. IE better camera. Just what I've been hearing around though. So nothing official as of yet

According to the model released in Russia it has a Snapdragon 430, fingerprint scanner and NFC. Looks good, don't know the pricing though.
Its up on their website today, pending an announcement, so certainly seems true...
I'm exited about this. Seems like a nice upgrade. From what I understand the new 430 chipset supports OTG which I really missed on the current model. For anyone interested, here is a comparisson of the specs https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/compare/468607;649493/
Too bad they keep making phones bigger, the current swift is already over the limit for me

You can't take out the battery which is not acceptable as well as the "option" to use a second SIM card or a mirco SD card. The first swift does not have these disadvantages.
Hai There, i have just bought de Swift 2+ and i want to root this device. I have already unlock the bootloader and flash the TWRP, but when i flash the latest SU, the device don't start up anymore.
I just rooted mine today using the version linked in the root-thread for the old swift. Worked fine.
As there is no thread for wileyfox swift 2 plus (yet) I thought I ask here.have any owner's of the swift 2 or swift 2 plus been able to use OTG? as all the adaptors I've bought haven't worked.anybody else had success with OTG? hope someone can answer. thanks.

Yes, I've got it, too. It's called "verified boot" and is an annoying Android security feature implemented in official roms. I can't post links, but just google "android verified boot" and you'll find plenty to read about it. You'll either have to live with it or flash a custom rom like Cyanogenmod to get rid of it.

I can deal with it, but it's nicer to get rid of out. U talk about a rom but i can't find a rom for the Swift 2 Marmite.
The stock rom is already a CyanogemMod.
Can u find an rom for the Swift 2 Marmite???
The stock rom is CyanogenOS which is the commercial branch of Cyanogenmod. It is altered to match the Google guidelines. Even though I didn't try I'm pretty sure you won't get these messages after replacing the stock rom with Cyanogenmod.

My Phone Storage is supposed to be 16 GB but it reads 8 GB

My Phone Storage is supposed to be 16 GB & it is supposed to be free because I just got it a few days ago yet it's full & you can't even know where the data is distributed
there is more than 8 GB that's missing in air
I tried most of the known apps to clean or to remove cache & nothing happened
there is an app that I installed once & didn't start up saying that the phone is rooted
so I downloaded root checker & it said that it'sn't rooted properly
then I used Storage Space app & it said that the phone is only 8 GB
& all the apps say that the phone is only 1 GB Ram
What do I do is the phone rooted or not or is it rooted non properly or is it damaged in storage or what
It's Huawei G9 LTE it's read in many apps U2 or Honor something
here is pics of every information about it

Flashing a ROM when your phone is rooted is generally a bad idea.
Wish I could help you but clone phones are a huge pain in the butt to work with. I've seen them with corrupted recovery etc, no way to format the phone, limited fastboot commands, etc....
You probably won't get a lot of help on XDA for a clone phone but you can try the "Chinese Models & Cloned Phones" forum over at GSMHosting, it seems active with lots of topics / information
Its a forum specifically for clone phone software etc.
