[Q] Confused with S2 process / keeping warranty - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
First post in this forum but have been on XDA for a while now (galaxy ace/note). Did look for this before posting. My wife has an S2 and it recently updated (via kies) to ICS. Its the UK (H3G) carrier version. Im not new to rooting/roms/flashing etc as have flashed my old galaxy ACE countless times CM7/9 etc.
I understand the S2 has a custom flash counter which could screw up warranty.
She hates this (H3G) ICS as it has quite a load of bugs. (Freezes lots etc) and I was wondering the following:-
1 - Do you need to root the s2 to flash via ODIN?
2 - Will flashing a stock ROM from sammobile increase the flash counter?
3 - If so will triangle away work to get rid?
She is not keen on the warranty being void but will happily go back to GB if I can do it for her.

You can root using odin, flashing anything will increase your counter and Triangle away does work but it can hard brick you phone at the same time.

Cheers for the quick reply. The first question was do you need root for odin? is Triangle away that risky?

A. No.
B. No.
C. No need if not rooted as flashing official firmware package will not increase the counter. An insecure kernel will.
Just follow Intratech's official firmware thread. Has all the instructions you need.

Thanks for the answer. So Ill just grab the H3G 2.3.3 from sammobile and flash it. Shell be very happy!

If you want to remove the triangle and reset the counter you can use a jig usb and after flashing the old bootloader

I have miss read what you put, sorry about that i though you wanted to root.

Flashing the stock Rom = No Triangle
I flashed the leaked version of ICS using ODIN and didn't get the flash count triangle, It wasn't until I flashed the edited stock kernel that allows root (without effecting the rest of the phone) That I did.
But using Triangle away got rid of it and I feel the major warning message may be a little overkill as it only took a second and it doesn't even reboot the phone.

Build GINGERBREAD.ZSKI3
Question 1
My phone is in Warranty i have been iOS user and like Jailbreak i want to enjoy Andriod by rooting my phone

I will be really thankfull for you responce, and please if i made some mistakes above i am sorry again i am new here
1-root with cf-root for you firmware using Odin.
2-boot into recovery and do a cwm backup or use the cwm app that installs with cf root to do the same.
3-if you want to go back to stock flash the original kernal using Odin and use a download mode jig to reset counter to hide flashing.
4-if you use a custom rom restore backup then do the above step.
You can find plenty of how-to's on any if the above points on this forum or by Googling it.

Ok. To flash the original kernal you will need to get it from the intratech thread. He had them all I think. This will remove the custom kernal and, assuming you are still on stock firmware everything is stock again.
As for the jig, when you flash a non stock kernal, there is a counter which shows when you go into download mode. Samsung put this in to see if you had flashed anything if you return it for warranty. The jig plugs into the phones USB/charging port and clears it so Samsung knows ****. I bought one off eBay for $2 delivered.

flashcounter question

Ok so basically for what I understood ny some reading is that when you use ODIN to flash ROM's you get the flash-counter +1 and bye bye warranty.
Can the flash counter be reset ? if so how do you do it? is that done by flashing back the stock ROM?
Thanks

I haven't read anything about a flash counter for the tablets, can you post a link to the particular article or thread that discusses the thread counter?
I got my tab 10.1 since yesterday and I can confirm it has a flash counter indeed.
Its pretty much the same as my sgs2.
I gues we have to wait till someone will try to make a jig for the tab.
I love to make one myself but my soldering skills are very bad.

Interesting, must be something about the ROMs that triggers the flash counter. I've flashed Liquidspeed and then the leaked 3.2 ROM on my Verizon GT 10.1 LTE tab and my counter is still at 0. The later I flashed twice using Odin.
These ROMs are basically stock images though, so perhaps that's why my counter hasn't triggered.
ok so what is everyone doing here with custom ROM's? Once you flash it it's over.

[Q] How can I reset flash counter on I9100G ?

Hello ,
How can I reset flash counter on I9100G ?

3.flash ics(if you want it) and to root it without increasing the counter follow method 2 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679778

hey neerajganga
you said triangle away worked, the reason i said it was not tested and highly dangerous was because no one even tried on i9100g so thats why.my question is this will it work with i9100g with rootbox ics with cm based kernel?
also eng.mohamed851
are you in ics or gb because triangle away works only for ics.
Triangle Away does not work on I9100g.. It says MAGIC HEADER NOT FOUND.
May be we need to request its developer to make it compatible with I9100G also..

Why do people continue to post offtopic crap in development sections?
This forum is for developments, not questions or general discussion or the "I cant use search button" forum
Questions go in Q&A.
Discussions go in General.
Developments, ie ROMS, Kernels, Mods, Reference etc goes in appropriate device dev forum.
How hard is that to comprehend???

How to install old bootloader and reset counter?
I have a Galaxy s2 GT-I9100 and unsuccessfully attempted to root the phone and the counter is on 5.
Current state of the phone is that it can only access download mode.
Tried a jig, that didn't work. Next tried to install old bootloader using Odin this also failed.
Initially the phone was running ICS and I believe I must have attempted to install an incompatible root kernel.
My intention was to reset the binary counter and then use Kies to restore the original firmware.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

[Q] New to Rooting!! i need some answers

Hi..xda developers i have an GT-I9300 JellyBean Samsung Galaxy S3 bought just 2 months back ...and i am interested in rooting... i know what rooting gives to access. But I have some general questions.
Q1: I like S Voice and the apps that are provided by samsung like remote controls and pop play etc..will the root firmware have also this applications.
Q2: My os is currently official Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and I heard that samsung is pushing JB4.1.2 to s3. CAN I USE SOFTWARE UPDATE ON MY my phone to download them?
Q3: if once rooted ...can i get back my offcial JB 4.1.1 back to my phone by any means that could be also downloading from the internet and den flashing it.
Q4: rooting voids warranty...but if i am able restore original firmware by flashing...will it still void my warranty the next time I go to service center...
Q5: what does rooting exactly do...other than super user access.
If possible please provide me firmware links of jelly bean 4.1.1.
A1: If samsung rom, yes
A2: No, but there are 4.1.2 Roms so you can do it yourself
A3: Unroot guides
A4: Yes, there is a flash counter inside your phone
A5: The possibility to flash custom software and write acces to all your phone
To Q4,
rooting voids warranty and leaves a flash counter just like ritchie46 answered
But you can use the app,Triangle Away to reset the flash counter and i think that would restore the warranty
Btw, why search for 4.1.1, you cam download stock 4.1.2 rom Sammobile and flash via Odin

I have a related question too.
I understand that root gives more control and i can then use apps like Titanium Backup, Adaway and some great security apps, but I am not quite sure what it means to the OS/formware. I.e. i needed to do a fw update and had to unroot my S3.
I installed a stock rom, rest the counter, etc. But now my S3 is not rooted.
If i re do the root, will i be putting it back to the old fw, or are there specific root for each rom, or does it not matter?
This is a silly question, i know, but i am not a sw guy so i am not quite sure what i am doing to my device, just know how to follow instructions and understand the benefits...
Cheers
Jonners
Root has nothing to do with firmware. You can just flash any official firmware, and you'll be on stock. Rooting just gives you the root user privileges, and leaves everything else intact. So you'd be on same fw.

Flashing stock firmware via Odin

Hello everyone,
For unrooting purposes If I flash a stock firmware 4.0.3 via Odin then will the flash counter increase by one? I have reset it to zero using triangle away app already and my device is rooted and on stock with that super brick bug. Also that I can flash any of the stock firmware like LPQ as long as it is developed for I9100 right? Or there any sort of regional restriction?
Thanks in advance!

ask moderator to move your Question to Q&A section bro, here is development section
You can always reset your binary counter with triangle away or USB jig.
If you are on stock firmware, you are good, because it is samusng's original.
4.0.3 keeps the brick bug away.
Firmwares are separeted by branded & unbranded, they all work on any I9100 devices. Modems, on the other hand, my not work in your country / region. You'll have to flash another one in order to get your network to work.
I am trying to find the answer to the OP.
My S2 has just been replaced after a long struggle with the supplier & Samsung so I have decided not to ever do any custom ROM flashing again.
The above replies didn't really answer the simple question: Does flashing an official ROM like the new 4.1.2 JB with Odin increase the custom rom counter on the phone.
I know this can be reset but it was trying to do that before that bricked my phone and why it had to go back for service. I don't want to do that again but if I know the custom ROM counter will not go up I'm happy to flash official JB with Odin.
My phone is CYV (Cyprus) so likely to be one of the last places to get JB via OTA or Kies.
Thanks

Custom couter stay at zero, but bootloader will by unlocked and "smart" guys in samsung service will know about flash.
@grisoxxl: I did not quite get you. You mean to say that the bootloader once unlocked remains unlocked even If you flash a stock firmware?
And one more thing. When do I need to backup that efs folder? Know about HC ktool?
