Is it safe to buy the xperia s on eBay when it's a unwanted upgrade? Uk - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Is it safe to buy a xperia s or any upgrade of eBay when it's a upgraded phone that they don't want on contract? What's stopping them from getting the phone blocked after I leave feed back? Or 6 month down the line they can't pay there bill and the phone gets blocked and then it can only be used out of the UK. Is this the risk we have to take? I've got 2 options, but it of eBay for 300 or Amazon for 379 and be safe. Thanks

Hi myself wouldn't buy an upgrade or any contract phone from ebay period! To be safe this is a new phone and would have problems so incase of this it's better to get it from a retailer. Also the phone wouldn't be on a network.

Yea that's what I'm thinking for extra peace of mind I may as well buy from Amazon, its just so tempting from eBay as there are a lot for sale and every one seems to be buying them. Thanks for your answer

Same for me..

I've bought and sold quite a few phones off eBay with no problems. You need to look at and check feedback etc. But to be honest if people are that worried in the first place they should buy from a retailer.

Yes I have bought a lot of phones of eBay but not smartphones that are contract and upgrades that can be blocked. Have you bought plenty of upgraded contract phones, it's alright saying look at there feed back but you only have a month to leave feedback so after that month it could be blocked and then you won't be able to leave them bad feed back or bring it up with ebay.

yes I've bought unwanted upgrades, smartphones etc. the thing is that all phones can be blocked whether upgrades or not. I can only comment on my experience with eBay, others might not be so lucky. When I say feedback what I meant was look at how much feedback what type of items they sell and even email some previous buyers just to confirm they got what they expected.

my XS was bought from ebay as an unwanted upgrade! (so as my X10)
I think it's quite safe, the warranty is still active as soon as the phone is a UK version. And I don't think they can block the phone (unless it's locked to a network). An unlocked phone = belongs to the owner ; locked phone = belongs to the network. (am i right?)

So how would you get a unlocked phone as a upgrade? On contract. I think most of these phones selling on eBay may be unlocked with a code and not factory unlocked. Thanks every one, I'm swaying to eBay I think.

If the person signed the contract with Carphone Warehouse / Phone4u, then the phone must be factory unlocked (unless it's an exclusive model to one network). And you can still "upgrade" with carphone / phone4u.
Actually I am not sure if they can even lock a "locked / branded" phone... (there was a news a few weeks ago about people are investigating methods to remotely lock stolen phones... well, this must mean they can't do it at the moment.)
And my friend told me that he had a friend who was working in Orange, and he ALWAYS could
"steal" phones from the store. the method was:
1. Use someone's name and address to sign a contract (comes with the latest phone of course)
2. Use his own credit card to pay
3. Pay the first month bill
4. Then claim that he didn't purchase the contract, as the name and address isn't his
5. So the contract is cancelled
6. Done
7. The phone is still his.
I'm not sure if this method is still working LOL, not sure if everyone could do the same as the guy was a Orange staff. But DO NOT try!!

I have also bought multiple devices via Ebay and have always succeeded in unlocking the device and using it on my network.

I see what you mean Warehouse / Phone4u most should be factory unlocked, say o2/Orange shop locked... I know the network can be blocked due to my friend at work having a contract phone, htc wildfire and he stopped paying his bill and the IMEI number was blocked by his service provider, the phone then couldn't be used the UK but works fine in any other country. The phone still works you just cant make calls when its blocked. Thanks

I bought my Xperia S off ebay for £260 unlocked brand new. I also bought an X10 over a year ago. ebay is great as long as the seller has good feedback. Also always pay with paypal as its easy to get your money back if there are any problems.

To date I start having screen issues with Xperia S, I have always bought phone from eBay (locked or unlocked) then take care of business with no issues.
When I bought the Xperia S from eBay, Yellow tint hit the screen and since it was from eBay I can't get it repaired. That sucks because basically with the market value of the phone and when I bought it I have lost $180 whether to sell it or get it fixed that is the price I have lost.
Faulty brand new phone that can't get fixed is not something that you would like to deal with a week after your purchase.
Remember, Market is flooded with Yellow screen Xperia S and Sony doesn't give a darn about it. So watch what you are buying.

Any phone can be blocked by imei number in the uk, pretty much if one network blocks then it gets blocked from all other networks as well. It's supposed to be a deterrent against theft as handsets become bricked pretty quickly.
I upgraded via phones4u as well and got free unlocked phone and 10% line rental discount ...

2. its is possible to use tht phone in india after unlock ? & what will be cost to unlock it. please help
A quick search would have yielded you your answers

dont know about the price but unlocking is free from the android market.
Just got back to the states from Hyderabad. Off contract expect to pay 650$ or about 32500 rupees. You can get one used for around 400$ to 450$. You can unlock the phone yourself and the phone works fine with vodaphone.

I would strongly recommend the I9100 in India - you will get warranty support for it, won't have to bother with unlocking, and you won't have to deal with carrier-mangling of firmware. Carrier-mangling has largely been neutralized for Gingerbread, but ICS is completely unknown.
He has a good point. The off contract price for the US version is about the same for the international version in India anyhow. Any particular reason you are looking for the AT&T version?

Thanks for reply guys. but on at&t site price is 150$ with contract.!!!! so after buying tht cell i can unlock it. is it ok or i shd buy from india ?
The 2 year on contract price will require a credit check and a US address for billing.

I do brokerage for US customs for imports.....I know the phone would require an FCC form. I'm not sure if India customs would require it because I don't do exports but its possible. Just a thought

The device is $550 without contract for a US-only warranty - no sane person is going to waste their contract subsidy (which comes along only once every 18-24 months) on giving you their $400 discount.

It's possible, but then you will be committed to paying for AT&T service which you won't be using.
That's the idea of the contract discount - AT&T gives you a $400 discount on the device, in exchange for being guaranteed that you will pay for their voice AND data service for two years.
This will cost you FAR more than paying full off-contract price. As an example, my total service bills come to $70/month or so after taxes - that is INCLUDING a pre-tax 25% discount on service I get through my employer.

It is cheaper to get an unlocked version. 2year contracts are expensive, that's why at&t can afford to sell it at discounted price.

So basically you want someone in the US to get the phone on contract, and sell you the phone for $150, while they continue to pay the bill? Seems legit...

Ok dud. My brother brought me a SGH-i777 just a week bfor..I stay in B'lore. Listen. There are 3 ways to buy it.
1st: With 2 years contract for approx $150 which I suggest you not to go with.
2nd:With NO CONTRACT(The phone will still be locked to AT&T) for approx $490...which my brother went for and is best way to go with.
3rd: Is to buy an unlocked SGH-i777 on Amazon or any other website which can be trusted..This too is an good option.
I chose 2nd option and hav unlocked it free by rooting it with Odin 1.85(App which is used for rooting) and by downloading Galaxy S Unlock app by Helroz which is available on Android Market for free..and u can root+unlock it perfectly within 10 mins..yes 10 mins or even less. Its damn easy procedure and you will get the rooting+unlocking guide. MAKE SURE YOU READ IT CORRECTLY. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289395&highlight=unlocking
Now I have provided you with every bit of info you needed. TC
You could get the att contract and then just freeze your account. You'll only be paying about 10 dollars a month. I do it when I go overseas for extended periods of time, since I work for a cruise line.

Carrier Unlock your LG Optimus L9 (P769)

Hey guys, I just wanted to put y'all up on something. I found this seller on Ebay that sells unlock codes for around $3.50 US. I bought a code yesterday and he sent it out to me early this morning. He is a UK seller. To enter in the unlock code, all you have to do is put in your SIM that is locked, go to the dialer, type in 2945#*769# instead of the other code that he gives you. Then you go on the first option and type in the code (on the first line) that he gives you.
I just wanted to put y'all up on this so y'all could take advantage of this! $3.50 to get your phone unlocked? Sold! I am one happy customer. I hope this is the right section to put it on. :/

@queboy89 legit! Thanks for posting that! It's good to have your phone unlocked, just in case something ever happens and you need to for example, change carriers or move out of the country.
@omgbossis21 hmm. really? I thought manufacturers don't give codes out anymore? That's what I heard from HTC, so I might be wrong. I had to pay $10 for my Sensation code.

Quick update that I didn't mention: T-Mobile will indeed provide SIM unlock codes, provided the device was purchased from a T-Mobile authorized dealer with a valid receipt. I had gotten mine in the Amazon deal, so it wasn't eligible.

So they (tmobile ) changed the way of do things ?
they provided me with the unlock code of a samsung exibith 4g like a year ago, and they havent asked me for any receipt whatsoever
the only constraint was that you need to have a good standing account of at least 90 days active, so they check that with your phonw # in their database and then
they send the request to the "unlocking" department, you get the code via email
in around 24hrs and it worked like a charm for me, now i am planning to get the L9, the 3.5 screen is getting too small as i am getting older :silly:

Bah, sometimes, I need to be careful with my words. I meant authorized dealer as in the actual T-Mobile stores. Amazon is certainly an authorized dealer, but I was ineligible in getting the SIM unlock code from T-Mobile. You have to purchase directly from T-Mobile's brick and mortar stores or website.
I believe that in your case, it would be dependent on whether you get the phone on contract or not. Because the L9 is sold both as a prepaid phone and on contract, there are different rules regarding SIM unlocks. The rules you stated are for the phone if you re-sign your contract and get the phone at the subsidized price. If you choose to purchase the phone outright, whether through the prepaid plan package or for a postpaid plan, then T-Mobile should and will provide the code immediately. It's currently $240 for the phone outright from T-Mobile's website, free if you sign a 2 year agreement, and $179 from Amazon. It's possible the stores are selling the same Amazon prepaid package for a lower price than the outright price listed on the T-Mobile website.
They probably didn't ask you for your receipt because you got your phone as part of a contract renewal/signing, and on a federally subsidized discount. In that case, they prefer to know that you aren't jumping ship from your contract before fully paying for your phone.
Sorry for any confusion I may have caused!

I might be a good idea to specify "carrier unlock" in the subject line (not to be confused with "bootloader unlock").

That is sort of what I was going to say, everyone should be able to get the code for free from their carrier. The problem is that some have rules of not giving up the code until after contract or other restrictions.

Blacklisted, but unlocked, T-Mobile Galaxy S5 on AT&T

I'm thinking of buying blacklisted TMo GS5 (because of the unlocked bootloader & also because it's cheaper to get a blacklisted phone becuase of the stigma), if I were to unlock it would I be able to use it on AT&T or it's MVNO's? Has anywhere sucessfully tried it? Thanks,
Last time I checked at&t and Tmobile were sharing blacklisted list. Not 100% sure but I think that was the case a few years ago

As mentioned above and expanded I think ALL of the big phone companies share the blacklist emei's. I know I saw somewhere that other countries were gonna be doing the same. To help cut down on stolen phones that are bought and then shipped to other countries for use.

Well I did have a blacklisted Note 3 that I was using on at&t. I had no idea it was blacklisted until I tried selling it on Swappa. But it did work for me.

That is strange. If they were supposed to be sharing the database of blacklisted phones how were you able to use it?
Does anyone know for a fact that they are sharing the database? Anybody work at AT&T or T-mObile?

I have no clue. I bought the note 3 from another XDA user. Used it for 3 weeks then put a listing on Swappa but it was declined cause the phone Imei was blacklisted. Phone worked perfectly fine for the few weeks I had it on AT&T.

I unlock phones etc daily ... and yeah if you have a blacklisted at&t phone you Can't! Use it, unless you go overseas ... But if you have a blacklisted tmobile phone you can unlock it and use with another carrier example (At&t, red locket, h2o) with no problem ....

How does a phone that just came out get blacklisted? I'm under the un ow does derstanding that they only blacklist stolen or unpaid phones. Are you saving their now blacklisting phones from other carriers simply because they aren't looking their bootloader?

I am not a goody two shoes - far from it - but to me there is something morally wrong with buying and supporting Black listed phones = just to save a few bucks.
you are in effect supporting the people who stole the phone in the first place - I would rather pay a premium price for a new phone and know that I am not getting a deal because of someone elses misfortune than pay less for a black listed phone just to save money,
If you have ever had a phone stolen from you - I think you would agree - buying a black listed phone is not a victimless crime it can perpetrate the original theft and we should all consider avoiding that....all black listed phones are probably not stolen - but how do you know?
my two cents

Most blacklisted phones are either financed or reported lost. That's why they are blacklisted by the carrier. I've never had anybody steal my phone or know of anyone who had their phone stolen. Those who default on their payment deserve to get their phones blacklisted but at that point they are out of the innitial $200+ anyway. So if they're looking to resell the phone to recoupe that money, I'm not sure how that should be looked down upon. Meanwhile those who lose their phones and later go on to report it as stolen because they want to get a new phone thru insurance, get no sympathy from me.

This. But my friend was caught by this, and there is no resolve for the issue he ran into. Goes like this:
He wanted to upgrade, but his upgrade was not up yet, so he decided to go on craigslist and buy a Brand new in box factory sealed GS3. He did so for something like $450 right after launch. He took the phone out of the box, set it up with his SIM, was on tmo fine for about a month or 40 days or so.
He goes to use his phone, and it wont connect to tmo, wont call via wifi, ect. So he calls tmo. They tell him the phone's original account defaulted and was never paid on, even though it was now on his account, and he had been a customer for something like 12+ years with a 4G tablet, and multiple phones in the past, they said they could do nothing to remove the blacklist. They said it was originally purchased with another GS3. They think it was most likely some kind of identity fraud. Sign somebody up and grab two $450 phones and sellem factory sealed.
He ended up selling it as a blacklisted phone on tmo to an AT&T Sub who unlocked it and used it on that carrier, but at a large loss.
For this reason, I will never buy a second hand phone. Its not worth the risk of losing the amount of money these phones go for off contract. Unless someone can prove the phone is paid off. In which case I probably still wouldn't do it.

So far only couple of people are able to do the new Galaxy S5 including me .... well the AT&T at the moment ... I'm waiting for a TMobile donor phone to begin the process ...
But I'm not gonna go into details about this kind of stuff ...

I thought blacklisted phones cannot connect to any GSM carriers in the US because they share the same IMEI database?
blacklisted != blocked != reported lost != reported stolen...
there's different situations that warrant where it'll be blocked from and different databases. actually, checkesnfree dot com does a pretty good job explaining it, though it's not 100% foolproof. just run a test with an imei number and see the different response types. they give you a decent list of possible results.
i've run AT&T on an unlocked T-Mobile SGS3 that was reported lost and it still works. because it's blocked from T-Mobile but not blacklisted across all.
hope this gives you some insight. i nearly got ripped by an eBay seller who sold me a fraudulently obtained S5 which i promptly returned and thank God it all worked out (dude had 100% positive across several years too, it surprised the sheeeet outta me). I ended up driving to Delaware (only 40 minutes from me and I had to do other shopping anyway) and got it tax free with my friend's T-Mobile number at $660 instead of $689. paid $25 on eBay for the unlock code and now I'm 100% worry free, bootloader lock free, KNOX free lol, and rooted.
lesson: it's a $650+ investment. be smart. since I'm running it on AT&T anyway, I could have kept that eBay phone which was blocked and not blacklisted, but why bother? who knows what could happen down the line? value would also be down. plus, I made 30 minutes of phone calls with my friend's T-Mo sim card (to be safe, 30, not just 5) just to ensure it also gets region unlocked too. =)
if you do buy it somewhere else, make sure they have a receipt showing it was PAID IN FULL. cash. they could report a stolen CC number down the line too so I wouldn't trust even one paid in full with CC. even then with a cash receipt I would be careful.. they could report it stolen later down the line, collect insurance, whatever! which goes around again to this: it's not worth it, just get it straight from the carrier! it's a freakin $650-$700 device, it's not worth gambling to save a few bucks!
Blacklisted doesnt necessarily mean stolen. Most of the time some ppls phone is damaged were thr company will demand them to buy another phone instead they report it lost n pay for insurance to get another one easy. It makes sense ur paying for insurance why not use to its full potential?

Are you sure? You'd be the first one in the world able to do that with the news Galaxy S5...
I just purchased a S5 a couple days ago from Craigslist. Meet the person in a T-mobile store and checked the imei before buying it. Everything checked out and I bought it.
A friend once gave me a Verison DroidX. I called Verizon and they confirmed it was Blacklisted. Took it to metro and activated it with no problems.
My S5 is black listed and working just fine on at&t network. No locked boot loader and rooted all the way. Got it cheap too haha

Will sm g900t1 with bad esn work with AT&T and get LTE?

Best way to buy a v10 with no contract.

I thought I could buy the v10 through Tmobile without a contract. Pay full price but the person on their chat told me it wasn't possible. So, Im looking for suggestions as to the best options to buy the phone w/o contract and with some type of warranty.

You can buy the phone from T-Mobile without a contract but you do need a plan.
Just talk to a different person imo.
If all else fails you can purchase it with a cheap pay as you go plan.
The cheapest I think is $3 for 30 min.
You however will have quite a few hurdles to jump through to get it unlocked from T mobile.
They require at least $100 to be spent on your account and 40 days of active service to unlock it.
You can get around those if you are lucky, some people have not been able to.
If you can do without warranty, your best option may be to use a service like swappa.com
You can buy new and used phones from people there.
Just make sure to check the condition of the phones before purchasing, also note if they are unlocked or not if you will be using a service other than T mobile.
If you must have a warranty of some kind, there are after purchase options available from places like squaretrade, however they are more expensive than I personally think they are worth.
Good luck finding your new phone.
You sure can buy it outright.

Thanks guys.
@L0x -- any luck??
I got mine from AT&T right after the release. I spent a bunch of time on various chats until I got someone who told me that I could get the phone unlocked within 3 to 5 days after purchase. Added to cart with the cheapest plan & ordered.
AT&T auto-activated the phone when it showed delivered. As I am using the phone in Europe on Vodafone, this was a problem. It took, all said and done, probably 8 hours across a month and a half on chat, twitter, and phone calls to get AT&T to send me the unlock code, cancel the plan, and wipe the account balance to zero. Unlock code was immediate, the rest took the longest. I didn't mind harassing them very much because I had my unlocked phone.
After it was all said and done, I have the AT&T variant with an unlock code, running on Vodafone, with nothing paid to AT&T except the cost of the phone. It takes time, persistence, and patience to make it happen.

Not yet per say. I'm about 2 weeks out from purchasing. Holiday kicked my ass. But I will update this thread when I purchase. I'm weighing right now actually going with a Tmobile plan. I use Metropcs right now. Just not liking the 20$ more a month for less data.
I'm in Canada. Bought mine from Best Buy in NYC. They give the option for a friend to pick up. Works great
