Questions from a prospective buyer. Opinions wanted. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

How difficult is it to root the Note right now? I was thinking about getting one soon but I don't have too much experience rooting devices (I've got a Kindle Fire running CM7 and I rooted my old Samsung Intercept, but those were pretty much rooted with apps or a prebuilt program so I can't take much credit). But I would definitely like to root it. I have gotten used to the freedom already.
Also, what's your overall opinion on the Note? I've heard a lot of good about it but I haven't heard much from developers personally.
I know its size is a prominent aspect but it's also what I like least about it (I haven't held one in my own hands yet though). If I'm into the capabilities of the Note but not its size, should I just go for the Galaxy S II?
Any and all opinions are welcome from Note owners.. I'm trying to make up my mind by the time I get my tax refund back (finally!) so anything you can tell me about your experience with the beast is appreciated.
Thanks,
NoGloww

Rooting is easy, you can use Odin to flash a pre root kernel. Takes all of two minutes. I enjoy this phone a lot. I wish there was a better choice of accessories, i.e. cases, and am afraid to see how gigantic this phone will be with an Otterbox case. Pretty much all good besides that.

Thanks for your input. I've checked out a case for it already on Amazon. Have you seen this: Heavy Duty Hybrid Case - Silicone Case Skin + Hard Protector Cover Case (Black Silicone + Black Bracket) with Foldable Stand for Samsung Galaxy Note/ i9220
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071AQNVW/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_us?ie=UTF8
And yeah, an Otterbox? Oh man, I don't even want to think about it haha.
Do you have a link or thread for the root with Odin by chance?

The hardest part of rooting was getting the Samsung drivers (which wasn't hard lol)

Rooting is super easy. Just download odin, and cwm, and flash it to your phone. Then flash a Kendall or custom rom and done. Takes about 15 minutes for me.

I've seen a few, but the build quality isn't where I'd like it. The reiko I hear is sloppy, the kracken is supposed to be good, just looks bad. I've got a speck case and it's embarrassing. 800 phone wrapped in scratched crap. There's a pre root kernel by da g, if all you're looking for is root, that's the way to go. Once you flash that your counter goes up one so it won't matter if you decide you want to go deeper and flash a custom recovery later down the line. Sorry I don't have the link for it, but it's in dev section for this phone and it will have all the appropriate links for drivers, Odin, and kernel.
update, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22684223 there's the pre root kernel for this phone along with drivers etc. that is the reiko case I saw. I read reviews on either that one or that one in black/ blue that said it was a sloppy fit. 7 bucks beats 60 though. According to Otterbox the defender is 6 1/8 * 3 3/4 or somewhere around there. I don't know if that would even got in my pocket anymore

And don't forget the easy overclock...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504920
I picked up two cases from Amazon since they were so cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071AQNVW
Fits perfectly; a bit too bulky for everyday use
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H13M2K
Also fits perfectly. Nice and slim, but provides a good grip. It's what I keep on the Note.
$22 for both. Prime got it to me the next morning. Amazon also has 32GB micro SD for under $25 if you are placing an order anyway

Got my case for my Tmobile TP2 from PDair...doesnt fit...

Lesson learned, it looks like it was for the HTC Touch Pro 2. Dangit....Just wanted to share with you guys to make sure you get one that fits your particular model.
There seems to be a problem with vendors understanding the T-Mo TP2 has a different form factor than the Euro version. I am returning my cradle for the same reason. Be careful when buying an accessory that it will fit your US model. First time I have seen this problem with phones. Your TP2 is a special device ... I like mine very much. Pity that we have to be the ones to tell them their products don't fit our phones...

same here, got one from a seller in HK for 6 bucks shipped to US

this is the one i got.
It's because the T-Mobile "Touch Pro 2" isn't really a Touch Pro 2 like you can get from everywhere else, it's a slightly-altered version.
Thank T-Mobile. This way, you can get all your accessories direct from them! How great will that be! It really is better for everyone.

i almost bought that one, but i didn't because we don't have the front camera, so that hole made me suspicious.
only T-mobile have the entire phone remodeled... sort of
while Sprint/Telus versions widened the bottom end where they added a 3.5mm jack, so some of the rubber cases won't fit
However I just recently ordered a slide-in pouch from pdair which SHOULD work on ALL TP2s... because it's just it... a pouch... no fitting needed, just enough space to slide the phone in... or any other thing that has the same dimension... sort of
this one by the way:

I hate those case for slide up phones. The phone is already big as it is. With that case it will add weight and size to it.
I decided to use my phone just the way it is and get a hip case (EASECASE ) and call it a day. I will try and be VERY careful not to drop it.
i just bought a gel case from tmobile for 12 bucks. it adds a couple mm to the overal size of the device but it feels good in the hands and isnt slippery like the phone with out it. the only color they had was black and its not on they're website, only in the stores right now. i am quiet pleased with it.

Man Thanks alot for being the guinea pig, SORRY no intent to insult you but I almost bought the pdair case. They are nice and alot of people have said good things about them. I was one click away from purchasing the case for my T-mobile touch pro 2 and i stumbled upon your thread. Its a shame that we are so limited to what we can put this beast in. I currently have my procilla ( thats what I call her lol) in my old sprint mogul ppc 6700 case.

Best Buy Free Case

Has anyone gotten a look at the Best Buy case that comes free with the Note pre-order?
I was wondering if there is a screen protector included. I'm going to assume there is none unless someone has seen one.
Assuming it's the same as the international (which I believe it is), I don't see a screen protector.

Thanks for the link, that was the worst review ever, but it was good to see what I'm getting. It looks very similar to the pics on BB. I really want a rugged case(i.e. Ballistic, Trident, Otterbox). But I'll take what I can get.

Best Buy rep
I stopped by best buy and asked the rep if the case would support NFC she looked at me like a deer in headlights and had no idea what NFC was she got another rep and asked him and he said NFC is on the Note but does not work yet I I told him I knew that already and wanted to know if the free case worked with NFC since the antenna for it is on the back of the case that comes with it he had no idea and asked his manager 15mins later the manager came out and said he had no idea yet he would think it would but could not say for sure since they aren't here yet he tried to find more info on his computer but found nothing so Best Buy doesn't even know yet the free case isn't turning out to be that much of a plus anymore.
The fact it's a flip case basically eliminated any interest I might have had in the BB deal for the Note. I can understand having a flip case for a tablet....but for a phone, I would find it as a hassle. I'm still gonna settle for a regular case, most likely a TPU one.

We got no info on the actual flip case from corporate. It was a deal struck with samsung and bby corporate and has nothing to do with the retail level associates. Right now they are sitting in a warehouse waiting for distribution. Im sure they will be in before release. If they are there by wednesday I can give everyone a definite answer. After that Im on vacation
I doubt these were made for the ATT model. If they are the ones that were already made, it will not work as the nfc is not in the back like the ATT model.
One the bright side it was free and nfc is not yet enabled.

I played with one at AT&T for about 20 minutes today and I really didn't like the flip case on it. It felt very cheap. I've played with another one from someone's international Note and it was much sturdier. I hope the one Best Buy gives out is more solid, but I got a feeling its not.

Felt like cheap cardboard to me. Like I could have easily bent or snapped it. The one I played with for the international note had hard plastic and looked nice as well. Hopefully the best buy one will be like the international one and not the cheap crap I saw at the AT&T store.

Vacation Case

I'm going on vacation this summer and wanted to start thinking about a case for the note.
I am going to Universal Orlando and also to the Bahamas. So think theme parks, roller coasters, waterparks, and snorkeling.
I know this isn't an iphone and we don't have the same options that they do, but anyone have any ideas about this?
TIA
Based on your vacation description, this is a tricky situation.
I forget that company that can 'water-proof' certain phones...but I'm not even sure about their overall work quality.
Normally, I would say just use a thin TPU kind of case. But in your case, I would probably look for a more bulky kind of case that offers more protection.
However, if I was you, I would bring along an older backup phone that can be considered more "disposable"...if you do have 1. But if you prefer to bring the Note, basically the main thing you can do is to be careful with it.

It depends on how hung up you are on a particular case. There's a few different ones out there if you look online.

You can find it for anywhere from $36 to $39 online if you search. It may still not be your cup of tea, but It's the best heavy duty protective one I've found with a kickstand. Regardless, good luck finding what works best for you!

I could tell you that Kenny usually closes threads discussing other devices since he made a stickied thread for them.
Or that if you're asking a question it should be in the Q&A section.
Or that if you had the common sense to post it there in the first place you would've seen another thread with basically the same title.
But I'll just let all the ignorance go.

no one on here bashing the fact that Samsung is trying to create their own eco-system ala Apple?
Watch that only works with note 3, note 10.1 and eventually s4?
No thanks.
I honestly wasn't that impressed with it. Samsung wanted to get away from the plastic feel....by covering the plastic in pleather? Its still quad core with a little step up from the S4's, which is cooking in peoples pockets right now, so who knows how it will treat you. It will also probably be locked. I dunno. I think Im going to sit it out for a while and see if there is anything else cool about it when it is actually released. Maybe Google will actually step it up this year with the Nexus 5, or whatever.....
I most likely will. If I do, I'm getting it on T-Mobile because I'm absolutely sick of Verizon. But I wanna hold out and see what the new Nexus is like before I make a decision I'll regret. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, there will be no regret with Jump. So yes, I'm getting the Note 3.
If we don't see any roms supporting the 4.2 or 4.3 stock bases then for sure! I'm just still hoping to See that dev for the Note 2.

Planning to switch from Verizon to T-Mobile as well. Little off topic but I'm also waiting to see what the N5 will have also. I know it will be a let down in terms of hardware/specs (it never met the expectations of consumers). The only reason why the nexus brand survives is because of the software of stock rom. On the other side, before I do get the Note 3, I'd like to see what the N5 can bring up to the plate.
nope, already ordered the One. Signal issues are driving me crazy. Back to HTC radios.
I don't get all the concern of the back.. There are going to be dozens of OEM back covers available.

If that's the case, then cool. Still not buying it though.
I'll be picking one up and selling the Note II. I was impressed with the hardware, still plan on rooting it and throwing on a custom ROM when available.
I'm going to wait and see what the development looks like. I just cant do TW. If it came out tomorrow unlocked with Beans on it, I'd be there!
