**OFFICIAL** What Phone Should I Buy? - Motorola Photon 4G

Attention!
In light of all the posts that are deleted and/or closed due to many off-topic posts about what device a person should buy, I have created this official thread.
Although XDA is not a place to extensively talk about what device person should buy, some forums permit it. So to help keep the threads a little cleaner, you may post your questions here.
Granted there are other sites more into device reviews and comparisons, but in the interest of keeping some people happy, and to avoid getting posts deleted, this thread is created for people who have no idea what device to get.
In the end, you should still march your happy self to a shop, and play with the devices that are available. Only then will you be satisfied with your purchase.
Any posts elsewhere asking such questions, that should be in this thread, will still be deleted or closed. This includes posting multi-duplicated posts in several forums outside of official threads.
Thanks, and Hope you use this.

A gsm user should not buy photon, i am photon user and i`m planning to sell it as soon as possible. Made some research i`m gonna buy samsung galaxy S sgh T989

First Moscow Desire, Thank you!Since the announcment of possible Photon sequel there are at least 3 running threads on the same subject.
I'm mixed to be honest, the spec's on the new EVO are hot. The "reported" specs on the sequel Photon Q 4G LTE look hot also. Giving a choice, if the Photon keeps CDMA/GSM and kickstand, Photon it is!

For prepaid gsm users. USSD codes not supported by the phone, and in my opinion ussd codes are very useful for us.

I just watched the press release for Samsung Galaxy S III (watched it twice matter fact) all I can say is DAMM!!!!!

This phone looks amazing. This phone reminds me a lot of iOS functionality.

Really? I love my Photon also, but there is crop of new hardware either out or coming out in the next month that makes Photon look like a toy! I'm not saying it bad, but if your going to upgrade, go top dog!

Until you're quad-core, I put MoPho up there with anything. There are kernels out to get 1.4ghz which on a tegra2 is more than adequate. For half (or better) the money Photon has HUGE value. SGS3 is right around the corner, though, and we have to expect that several other Quad's are right there with it. (obviously pertaining to US domestic carriers) Waiting is probably the best option, but if that is not an option, the MoPho is serious.

So, what do the new phones do that the Photon does not do in its size/form factor? I have all the memory and CPU power I need now. Wrt my Intel desktops, I reached the same point several years ago - a quad core 8GB box is more than I need. I understand that some people want more for (1) valid uses like gaming and simulation, (2) hobby purposes - just want to have the latest & I acknowledge as a geek that this is a valid reason!
Serious question - I carry an ultralight laptop (Win7), tablet (ICS) and a phone. My Photon's screen is perfectly sized for a phone and my pocket, but not big enough for other uses - BUT, my pockets are not big enough for a tablet. So, my phone is pocketable, while tablet and laptop go in the briefcase/bag.
IMHO, Android phones have peaked in terms of size/performance for a pocketable device. They are commodities now - what am I missing?

Like your post. Agree.
But - what am I going do with a quad-core and a 4" screen? My second core is rarely used today! 1 or 2 cores seems to be plenty for a 4.x" screen. Battery tech is NOT keeping pace with more cores in a pocketable phone. Thoughts?

buy one htc hd 2 <--- this phone run all the OS

Photon would be great, until the *censored* upgraded the bootloader to a locked version, incapable of an OEM unlock.

I absolutely love my Photon 4G. By far the fastest phone I have ever owned. Especially with the Dual Core and the official ICS being released in Q4 from Motorola.

MB855 Custom rom on ISW11M

is there any difference between the two? will the custom rom works on both device?

Is a used Photon right for me?
Hey all...
I'm on Sprint and I have about 17 months left in my contract. I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S2, which I really liked, but I lost it and have had to go back to my old HTC Hero (yikes).
Anyways, so I was going to buy another Galaxy S2, seems like used ones go for around $225 - $250 on ebay, but then I realized that I'm planning a trip to Europe (Iceland and Germany) this summer, and my girlfriend has a CDMA phone (Verizon Galaxy S3, which is a great phone but too much $$$ for me to buy off-contract). I'm hoping to buy prepaid simcards in Iceland and Germany, so I can use data while I'm out and about (especially maps).
So it seems like the Photon is the only recent Android phone on Sprint that has GSM support, and it's a bit cheaper that the Galaxy S2 on eBay. From what I've read online, it seems like the phone is a good choice, with more or less the same specs and screen size as the Galaxy S2. Can anyone give me some advice?
The potential downsides I am worried about are:
The Photon is officially at EOL. (I don't care that much if it works well.)
It seems like there were some conflicting reports about whether the Photon supported GSM 1800? But more recent posts I've read seem to indicate using a prepaid simcard in Europe mostly just works (maybe with having to run a utility to tweak ASNs).
It might not ever get the ICS update. (I don't really care that much - I'm happy using Cyanogen or a similar ROM if I need to.)
It kind of seems from this forum like people are ditching this phone in droves.
Some people seem to think this phone is kind of unreliable.
As far as my usage, I mostly run fairly simple apps like maps, foursquare, nytimes and the web browser, but I like those apps to run fast. Games are not my top priority but I like them OK.
Are there any other GSM / "world" phones on Sprint that might be worth looking into?

Photon is very good one
i've been using this phone for 2 weeks, i've trying different ROMs, it's amazing how this phone is rock and fast.
the only problem that i've faced with it is when i unlocked it i've lost the 4G. no way to get it back as you want to use it with any GSM carries in the USA.
but anyone who lives out of US will not face this problem as he will not have to unlock it.
---------- Post added at 02:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 AM ----------
Moreover, it supposed to be an official ICS for photon after 2 months and i'm waiting it.
Now all the available ICS for this phone have major bugs.

imo...
ive owned many android phones between me and my wife weve had pretty much every phone from sprint, using the upgrades every year.......she has a s2 i have a photon (atm)
her s2...unrooted stock has an amazing screen very vivid decently fast no lag from what ive seen, sprints 3g blows no 4g in my area and wifi ( my wifi router) blows major ballzack... you can buy one of these (s2) from bestbuy using an upgrade/or new 2yr agreement right now for $49.99.. the photon for $29.99.... the photon as long as it doesnt come loaded with the new ota is a amazing purchase for 29.99 with the ota expect to only be able to root for now until someone fingers unlocking out....but the photon is incredible fast when i first bought it running stock and no root i was amazed at how snappy and receptive it was.... everything loaded so fast (coming from a htc hero mind you ), net was loaded decentl;y quick and the screen was very bright... then i rooted unlocked and flashed roms....(even built a few) still photon impressed me any issues i had charge that puppy up sbf and start all over neverbrick if you would......so many options with from ics,jb,miui, aokp's,PA, **** man list goes on and on..........and with the future promise of a stoock ics the photon is one hell of a purchase.....however......
im up for an upgrade and im looking at the s3 intently....... but at same time im wanting to wait for the next best thing...thought would be the PQ but after reading and reading on the specs and what can be expected of/from it IJDK......thinking of getting away from motorola since they have been so uncooperative with unlocking the bootloader and system updates

I personally think no phone right now is a significant upgrade from the Photon, however my mind might change once the Note 2 or the next Nexus device comes out. A lot of current phones are using older gpus which aren't a big step up from the Tegra, however the new Adreno and Exynos GPUs are supposed to come out towards the end of the year which is a bit exciting.

[Q] How to keep my apps before I return the Atrix?

I'm returning my Atrix and I was wondering how I keep the apps I bought from the Market? Do I have to back them up with Titanium or will the market remember that I bought the apps and just let me reinstall them on a different phone as long as I sign in to the market as the same user?
Market will remember as long as you use the same credentials to set up your new phone.
Appbrain.com is the computer version of the Android Market. You can sync your device to the website and vise versa. You can backup and save the apps that you have downloaded and bought and then quickly download them again.
https://market.android.com/ is the computer version of the market, appbrain.com is a 3rd party site.
Excellent, thank you all. Atrix goes back tonight.

Returning it because the bootloader is locked with no crack in sight, and at&t screwed us on hsupa. Motorola's new update removes root and devs are leaving the Atrix so that should throw red flags up. I don't want to be stuck with this locked Atrix for 2 years and only get updates when motorola gets around to it and then having to hope I can root after every little update. I'm not happy with them locking me out of it so I'm not supporting motorola. Botched recalled updates etc. I'm getting the inspire 4G to replace it and I will be able to Tinker with roms all I want! Hardware wise I love the Atrix. I'll miss tegra games and the high res screen but that's it. Moto and at&t crippled it. Sad. Such Huge potential.

Unfortunately, I am returning my Atrix tonight as well - day 27 of purchase. This is my first Android phone but I feel like I'm missing out on some of the best aspects of the XDA community and features of Android, in general. I like the Atrix, but not enough to keep it for two years on contract with most likely very meager updating by Motorola in the future. I also have some gripes about the hardware.
I consider this my introductory Android experience and absolutely love the OS. I love it so much, that I want to be able to experience more of it!
I agree with everything you said, except for the Inspire. Since I sold my iPhone 4 (for a nice profit!), I will be using an old school Razr until something of interest comes along. The Inspire does not seem to warrant the use of my upgrade eligibility.
Also debating jumping ship altogether from AT&T. This whole HSPA thing, while not a deal breaker, certainly left a very bitter taste in my mouth. I have recently found AT&T store reps to be uninformed and fairly rude, especially on the phone. I have been a loyal customer since 2000.
I hope that the current locking trend we've seen from HTC and Motorola is not a sure sign of the future of Android. One of the main reasons I left my iPhone behind was because I enjoy tinkering with my phone a lot, and the Android OS is so well suited for it!
It seems like developer support is a key factor in ensuring the longevity of a device, far after the hardware company has moved on. I don't like to buy phones continuously off contract and I would like to ensure that my phone stays developmentally relevant for the duration off my contract.
This may not be the proper forum for this response, but I just felt the need to vent and am interested in hearing what you guys have to say. Not trying to bad-mouth the Atrix for those who like it, it's just not quite the Android experience I hoped for.

You know, as we veer rapidly off topic, I have to say that while I've been disheartened by the shackles put onto this "open" OS of Android by Motorola and while I too am waiting with baited breath for someone to hack open the bootloader, not a day goes by that I'm not happy I switched away from the iPhone to move to an Atrix. While I agree that while the "4G" is still nowhere to be seen and that the locked bootloader is a pain, this is still twice the device my iPhone 4 ever was, especially as the Android OS doesn't treat all its users like they're half brain-dead and completely lacking any technical knowledge. I'm happy to say I'll be keeping my Atrix.
I'm unsure if I'm keeping my Atrix. I'm still within the 30 days - I love the phone, but some of the things I tend to do are things I can not do without access to the bootloader.

I concur!!!
People are saying that kholk is working on unlocking the bootloader. Last I heard of Da_G, he was working on it too.
Something you guys might find interesting is the white nexus s that has access to the AT&T 3G bands.
Anyways, on topic: Backup your apps using TiBu to your external sd-card. Then plop the new card into your phone, and restore.

what exactly can we do from unlocking the bootloader
read above a 5th grade level for one (some can do this without an unlocked bootloader)

The Current State of Affairs with our X2

Before i begin my rant, a precursor..This is not a post about the Devs not getting us unlocked BL or whatever may be... Far far from that.. My thanks and Enormous respect and gratitude go out to every single Dev and User who has helped not only myself, but every other user on XDA and other boards with the Droid X2.
The party seems to be over. I think the bulk of us knew, getting the X2 was more of a bridge in the gap til our next big phone, which I believed would be a 2nd Gen 4G LTE device. The droid Bionic hit today and yes, its obviously a much more robust product, kinda the same kinda different, then our beloved X/X2.
Where I live (Long Island) 4G is pretty prevelant.. I have used the Pantech 4G modem on a macbook and it got me 35 Meg down over air (6 meg up), which almost made me faint. This isnt about speed tho and the x2's lack of 4g..
The facts are the Devs are all killing themselves, trying so hard to come up with a way to make teh x2 better.. Untapped and unrealized potential we have in this device. Unfortunatley i dont see a light at the end of this tunnel.
Perhaps Ice Cream will save us end of the year, or Q1 of 2012, but thats doubtful. I came to the X2 on the sheer hope and belif that NVidia's Tegra 2 was gonna reign the supreme King of all processors on the mobile market.. Yet new phones are using TI more now. Why? Dunno.. Motorola has been hush as to why they didnt use the Tegra in the Bionic..
When i got the x2, as im sure most of you had, it was $199.. 4 weeks later its $99. Now its buy one get one free. Every since i have used smartphones (Since the old samsung SCH-i600 Win Mo 2002 phone), I have never seen the life of a phone come and go so fast..
Maybe thats my most annoying thins. It may not be true that the phone is Dead, or that dev will cease, but it sure as hell feels like it, don't it? Look at the facts:
-Hardly Any new topics across 6 different forums (XDA, DroidForums, Motorola, AndroidForums Etc).
-Buy one Get one Free (aka verizon saying PLEASE TAKE THIS OFF OUR HANDS)
I just wanted to get this off my mind.. I love my x2, it has been by far the best phone i ever had, not even CLOSE.. The surely untapped potential of this device, and its dual core capability + Nvidida 3d backing just leaves me craving oh so much more.
A few points in response....
1, I feel you pain a little bit. Im not terribly concerned about the phone itself because, I do like it (except for the damn music skipping..thats pretty annoying).
I also do not enjoy the lack of "chit chat" so to speak on the different forum boards. On the D1, I could make a comment (or a theme) and 20 minutes later the thread was on the 2nd page. I enjoy the communication.
As a themer, I enjoy making them but you are right here somewhat. It takes a lot of hours to make a theme and probably even more over the long run to maintain it. My D1 themes were downloaded 1000's of times. So far, as of last night anyway, my X2 theme has been downloaded 42 times. That makes it real tough to convince myself to keep doing it. Not a slam in anyway, just a limitation of the amount of X2 users.
I bought my D1 as a BOGO and it was over a year before anything came out that made people abondon ship en masse.
The Bionic and probably every 4G phone to come has a price point of $299. Tough pill to swallow when thinking about bailing on the X2.
Eclipse is pretty much the only ROM I use and Nitro seems to be banging it out left and right. I don't think hes going anywhere anytime soon.
Thanks for such a fast response honestly.. It's good to clear the cobwebs around here every once in a while..
You make fantastic points on all fronts.
I can only imagine the time and effort put into your themes and roms etc.. One for which i would never have the time nor patience to get involved in.
As with all technology, and myself being in the IT industry for over 20 years knows, that You get the best, but as soon as you get it, its not the best anymore.. I think what hurt most of all in this entire process, was after the fight and aching to get GB on the X2, its like that was the end of the fight.. Nothing left to look forward too.
The phone works. Every android device has software issues. We all know this. I think the thing every user here wants, is to know just how far and what this X2 can really do.. What happens if we put the pedal to the floor, will this thing burn rubber? Or have we hit the ceiling? Is this all the x2 has and should we months from now when our contracts start dwindling down, start looking at the future alternatives?
My comparison (to laugh), the X2 is like the old Commodore 128. Built on top of the Commodore 64, best selling computer ever, the 128 had promise.. Was faster, more robust, etc.. It never reached its potential because 95% of the time, it was being used in Commodore 64 Mode. Then we all went out and got an IBM.
i dont see the phone being dropped any time soon. it has the new dual core and gpu chipsets and its 100$. not everyone can afford a bionic. also 4g isnt in that many places. i still see people with droid2s. im sure there are people in the boat i was in. pretty much i didnt want a non smart phone for 2 years and verizon had this at 100$ why would you pass that up if you are tight on money
I hear ya, but its not really about not wanting one because of lack of 4g in your area or like that. Obviously the $99 price tag is amazing for what it is, but what i'm saying is that in the what, 4 months the phone has been out it is already shelved, being dismissed, and honestly slowed to a crawl any and all wonderful enhancements we were all waiting and anticipating.
Its the nature of the beast.. Every phone or electronic device goes thru this, i just can not remember one happening tho THIS FAST?
I was an Avid HTC Touch Pro 2 user on verizon.. That thing was honestly DOG SH*T slow since day 1, yet the community kept that alive for me for almost 3 Years of use, as painstaking as it was.. Roms, apps etc that just kept me wanting more and more...
I feel (and i don't think im the only one) like with the Lack of chatter, as a previous post said, the lack of push from motorola, now motogoogle, the locked device etc.. we are at an impasse. Its not anyones fault. It is what it is..
Maybe some of us thouhgt for the initial $199 (more like $320 after all the docs, extra batteries etc that some of us, like me, bought) and we would honestly have a solid year + of things to look forward too.. Instead, (and again this is just my perception, i may be 100% wrong, and or you can see it different) I feel like the development cycle has slowed down because no one can crack this sucker. There pushing us out the door like an after thought..
Hell Verizon ran that Father's Day X2 commercial, for what, 3 weeks maybe.. Not even 1 commercial about the X2 since (Except for 1 buy one get one free offer i saw about a week ago). Aka, Dismissed. Now i didnt expect Verizon to push the thing for 6 months, obviously.. but hey i thought this thing was a special peice of hardware.. C'mon, its NVIDIA ffs. The King of 3D Graphics.. I was (and still am) convinced that if anyone out there was to make a 3d capable device that could have an interface that wipes the iphone off the map, it would be via NVIDIA.
It could be me overthinking things, or just the fact that i Love this hardware... After years upon years of windows mobile bashing my brains to puree (i havent played with win phone 7, its suppose to be SALTY with the Mango update).. To have a device that WORKS is amazing to me still.. I just want more, and i want the users who share the experience with me to have the best possible usage out of a decice that deserved better then it has gotten.
I agree with subdivision. I have and am still having buyers remorse with my x2. The devs for this phone have been great and worked very hard to make this a great phone, but lets face it 4g is where everyone is going now. Not to mention making huge leaps in custom deving a phone truly takes a large dev pool, something that we just don't have.
We recently switched our family plan over to my brothers Wells Fargo corporate account, with that comes one year contracts and no charge for extra lines.
I look forward to next June when I can change this thing in for the next phone.

honestly a week or 2 ago verizon had nothing that was better than the x2 in my book with maybe the exception of the droid 3 but i hated the keyboard. now they have the bionic if you want to pay for it. i guess verizon just has ****ty phones
Ok I just got my DX2 Friday and I moved from the Droid Eris we spent 8mo to get a full working root for everyone s-on and leaked 2.1 users. Someone knows someone just like in our case who gave up an answer to what we were missing on vulnerability.
Has anyone gone outside of this forum to find Devs bftb0, TopazArron, JCase, Darchstar, rigmarts, tazzpatriot, punkaos, and zifnab06 these are all Super intelligent Devs/Hackers that I was in on the IRC with researching for months exploits.
Who do we have dev wise that has rooted a phone from a 0day? Are we setting up them an IRC server and letting only thoes members in? I see a lot of prommised money and that is all good but no traffic for a Dev to root a device is present. I am not aware of who found the current workarounds or if other exploits worked so if there are Devs active sorry didn't know just got the phone.
The Droid Eris had no commercial time at all I just found it cause it was cheaper than the Droid 1. Once an root was found the aboved mentioned move on to other devices but the Themers and ROM Devs steped in and are still going, all for a phone that isn't even sold anymore.
So instead of being all upset about it spend that time getting to know other devs from other forums and finding out exploits or befriending them to possibly work on our phone. I just tweeted Jcase to see what he is up to.
A good Dev will enjoy the challenge this Ef'n bootloader and Communist Motorola has created. And with the recent purchase of Motorola by Google could be a good thing, most of the Season Rooters have contacts in Google and could get info.
I just went to PM Jcase and he is currently active looking at the bounty page. Now since it is a bunch of people just offering money I would think if the second pot for a DX2 for the Dev to use has to be legit. They are going to have to have one or two if they do work on it.
I think our best hacker for x2 is navenedrob and he doesn't even own an x2 lol

Once again, i don't mean to be repetitive, but please do not take this thread as a "OMG THE DEVS ARENT DOING ANYTHING JUMP SHIP" post.. Totally not my intent.
Voicing my frustration at Verizon, Motorola.. and to a lesser extent NVidia and Google. No phone is perfect, again we all know that. This device COULD be one of if not a TOP Tier phone for the next 2 years if the proper people and channels got together and did something about it.
First off Verizon could have really pushed the Dual Core Phone as the future, and heads above the rest, since it out benchmarked every phone they had almost 5 fold.
Motorola could have been seen as a savior, instead of a villain, by giving us that true open source Option.. Unlocked Phone, Choice to remove Blur etc..
Google could have gotten off its pile of huge money and stock and said "Hey, we don't like how you are using our OS on this device, that has to change Pronto"..
NVidia could have said "Hey why are you not taking proper advantage of Our Tegra 2 chipset to show really what this bad boy can do?".
What IF's.. Thats all we have had with this phone.. What iF it was unlocked.. What IF both cores were truly being used correctly.. what if.. what if.. what if..
Our phone is a Very Very good phone. I Love it.. I have tailored it to suit me SO well that i honestly wouldn't change it for any device short of maybe the Galaxy S 2 only cause that seems to be the phone thats making everyone go gaga.. but i will say the Simple reason i didn't get a thunderbolt or wait for the bionic was the scary 4G battery life issue.
My upgrade was available in MARCH. I waited until JUNE to get the X2 to research and make a proper educated decision, along with my friend Ringo was was an AVID X User, and how much he loved it. I said OMG X + Nvidia = JESUS REINCARNATED AS A PHONE!
Maybe if anything, maybe my post can somehow get a snowball rolling down a hill. Maybe it will or can motivate that bunch of people to come out of the woodworks and say, u know what, this thing really deserves to show what it can do.
If in any way i could help this community, hardware, software, money whatever was to my ability, i would in a heartbeat.. only because i believe in every single user who visits XDA and these forums as users who truly are INTO their devices and only wants the best for the user base.
I prey a year from now, we are all on some great custom rome, running ice Ice Cream Sandwich and saying my god how this almost 2 year old device is still one of the best phones on the market.
I'm with ya Sub, we were probably shopping phones about the same time. When it became clear that the bionic was a ways out I plunked down my cash for the X2. It was a big jump coming from my trusty TP2. I would have to say that my TP2 was the best phone I've had. It was FAR more stable than this thing. My wife is about ready to throw it out the window when it crashes and reboots at night and makes the famous "drooiiid" sound and wakes her up. Coming from winmo it seemed like android was the way to go since WP7 was going to be completely locked down. I have been disappointed to see how weak android is out of the box, and to see that I can't even do a wifi hotspot with this phone (at least without paying).
I do think that there's some light at the end of the tunnel though. I've seen a LOT more marketing for the X2 in the last couple weeks. Yes, they're selling them cheap, and they're doing BOGO, but they're doing the same thing with the Droid3. So I don't think its dumping excess hardware. Hopefully its building user base and with more users they'll fix some of the phones problems. Verizon sent me a trade-in notice offering $100 or more trade in for a bionic, so if I pitched a fit maybe they'd let me in on one of those. I considered it for a short time, but 4G is pointless for me for probably years. And I really do like the docks for the X2, I just wish they weren't so buggy.
I think I'm going to try to hang in there for a while, and hopefully we see some progress. Maybe somebody will even figure out how to get the thing to play an mp3 track without skipping.
Thanks man..
There are 2 people here in the boat with us.. Those that are under contract who HAVE to wait for something new, and those who aren't but love the X2 to stay with it...
I for one wouldn't change it right now as i love the phone, i just want it to succeed where others have failed, and truly take advantage of the hardware we were given.
I still want to know why motorola only put 512M (or 414 whatever) in this thing, which just made ZERO sense to me... With ram being so available, and So cheap, why not toss at least 1GB, or 2GB.. Set it apart.

Lol right, the bootloader killed it, and everyone's busy with the 4g's thats what going on, vzw pushing 4g the "thunderbolt" No one cares about a dual core... I mean the d3 is deadish too, Bionic might save it, cuz it has same processor, but moto's dead atm, sh-t battery etc
I have PM jt1134 from the Fascinate forum. An effort to try and get another dev possibly interested in joining minds with others here. He's well respected there but I'm not sure of his interest here, if any. It's worth a shot!

I don't think bionic has Tehran. I believe it is TI omap
And moto is mum on why they didn't use tegra. Is it possible that ia where our buggy music problem resides? Since they don't seem to wanna admit that either
I'm pretty sure the tegra 2 didn't get along with 4g. That's why it was scrapped 9 mos ago.

Yeah, d3 has a ti
Honestly I wouldn't worry about this phone fading away man it has a lot going for it. I mean we have Nitro w/ Eclipse and Naven whom is going to uploaded all atrix ports which I am looking forward to (esp alien rom). I know someone is working on getting CM7! We have 2nd init going for us now, and if moto keeps true to it's word an unlocked bootloader soon? As for the switch to TI I think it has something to do w/ the partnership w/ Google. Yes the Bionic has a tad more power under it's belt, but nothing earth shattering imo. The newer blur probably coded better, but I want a full AOSP experience anyways so I'm not too worried about that.
X2 pretty much carries the specs of the Bionic concept I think? The Tegra 2, 512 MB of DDR2, qHD, it just lacks 4G which I could care less about since I have a 100 mbps connection at home. FFC I could care less about either, the 1GB of RAM woulda been nice though. I still love the X2 though it's GREAT as a phone, best in call quality I've experienced in awhile. So don't worry the X2 will have development and will be around for awhile.
I think the responses in this thread give us all reason for future hope, granted its not blowing up XDA, but it still shows i think some true and viable interest here.. It was and is a downer to see lack of new threads, and just overall activity for our beloved X2, hence why i think i created this tread..
Stirr the pot.. Kick the tires.. See if the motor is still runnin or are we about to get sent to the junk pile.
Here is what i would love to happen in a perfect world:
Unlocked Bootloader (DUH)
A myrad of custom roms of all walks and versions of Android
Customization like the old Win Mobile devices
True dual core coding and usage of apps and the os
Freedom to truly take this thing to a new level.
Freedom is the key.. How is it were on an open source device, that is basically closed thx to Motorola.. How can google not be really P.O'd about that?
I believe in this user base, especially those here @ XDA, where honestly the true and best mobile programmers, coders, and customizers seem to come when things are happenin the way it should.
For all the trash people talk about this device, if someone ever cracks the bootloader you know for a fact were gonna have 50 devs and 5000 people jump on this phone overnight

Honestly and seriously ...I've been with the nexus one for almost 2 years and looking into an upgrade.
I don't want the Galaxy nexus or the sg2.

I was initially looking to get the galaxy nexus, after all the delays and needing a new phone as the old one died, went for the galaxy note and am loving it even though it's still on gingerbread. Rooted it, loaded a lite rom, speedier kernel, got rid of most of the Samsung crap and just sitting and waiting for an ics build to pop up.

The phone has only been out for a month. It takes a bit to get some momentum, but honestly, I'm loving the RAZR with a simple root, and some small tweeks.
I'm looking forward to ICS, but am more than happy with the phone as is, and could be pleased for a few months while the development catches up.
The lack of perceived development is due to two things IMO...
1. Locked boot-loader
2. Another great phone (SGN) being released at the same time.
Motorola really messed up by locking this boot-loader while another very "open" phone was being released around the same time and by looking at the forums it's quite obvious. Considering the above though, the development here has been pretty decent thanks to a bunch of dedicated pro's.

According to what I've read, the Nexus, while on Verizon, the contract is actually under Google's control. Hence, the unlocked bootloader. It was Google's requirement that the phone come to the market open.
Motorola, on the other hand, is restricted like HTC & other Samsung devices on Verizon's network. HTC originally stated they would release a tool, but then Verizon forbade it, and the Rezound was fully locked as well.
Samsung's phones are almost always locked down, it just so happens they're easier to hack, but they don't support development very well, so even with it unlocked, you end up with very poor support.
HTC never releases their source code (at least from what I've read) so it's hard to get a working custom rom that's 100% on their phone.
I've owned 3 Motorola Droid phones, and the last two have been great for development. My mom also owns another one in the Droid X, and it too was easy to flash, and had plenty of support from the community due to the source codes being available.
If I can teach my mom how to flash a custom ROM on her phone, it can't be THAT hard to do, and the support I get when she has an issue, is better than Verizon offers in store.
As for Motorola messing up, maybe it's on timing, but really it's not their fault the phone came locked down. They actually were pushing for open devices first, by offering the OG Droid, and then offering the Xoom with an unlocked bootloader, and announcing it wanted to unlock bootloaders in late 2011.....it's just Verizon shoved it back in their face.
So if anything blame Verizon for this.
hmm, my problem is that i really don't want a Samsung phone. The SG2 is will become outdated and most ppl have that (i want to be different).
I've thought of the Note, i like big, but found it unpractical.
What else? Lenovo?
Any new phones around the corner? What's after the Razr?

I'm a keyboard guy myself, so I'm getting ready for the Droid 4 which should be coming out any day now, and am probably going to give my RAZR to my wife, as she likes the screen, and her OG droid is getting really long in the tooth.
After that, there's a new HTC "Zeta" was rumored recently as well as the "ville".
Really, you kind of have to wait till CES for more phones after Christmas. CES is Jan 10-14th, and there will be quite a few new phones that are announced there.
I am also coming from a N1, been using it for 2 years. No big problems except the lack of internal memory (even thought I'm using S2E, but still...) and couldn't play much games on the phone...
The Razr looks very nice! The CPU is the same one as the GN, but with much better designs and build. So I also seriously consider this phone too. But as a top of the line phone the graphic seems a little weak, even compare to SGS2(which is out almost half year now). So I'm a llittle worry about this....Maybe we will have to keep using our trusty N1 at least till the end of CES in Jan.
I agree with garlick2. The first thing I did was to root this phone. However, this is the first Android phone that I have had that I have been happy with right out of the box. I have made a few minor customizations, but nothing major.

I Gotta Say

Hello,
As a former HTC EVO3D Owner from the "First to Buy" opportunity in June before Sprint sold their soul to get the iPhone and before that an EVO 4G, I gotta say I absolutely am blown away by the Photon. I was quite intrigued by it when it was released, but Sprint staggered the release so that it was past 30 Days between when the 2 Phones were released.
I had so many issues with my 3D that I literally had 4 Replacement Handsets sent. I was finally so fed up that I told them either give me a Photon or I am cancelling.
The one thing I did not want to do is give up my last Annual Upgrade which they offered to move up if I paid $55 due to LTE coming and actually having a real chance of Nationwide availability.
Back to the Photon, while it took about 45 minutes to get used to the UI, I am really liking this phone more and more each day. And the Speaker is absurdly better than the one in the 3D. As in I can finally hear Netflix and all the Music on my Phone.
While I hope there is an official ICS Release, there are obviously ways around it. Moreover, with the vastly better Call Quality, Speaker, and just how much better it works in low signal strength areas, I am pretty much positive I will be getting whatever Motorola LTE device that comes out around June. Hopefully, it will be similar to the Razr.
It is weird, I have been with Sprint since 1999 and one of my all time favorite Phones was the StarTac I had around a decade ago. Unfortunately, my ex GF's Dog took it and digged a hole in the Yard. (found years later) Since then, there have been very few Motorola Handsets. I can only hope Sprint maintains at least cordial relations with Moto.
Cheers,
JJ
Welcome dude! You think its fast now, try unlocking and running CM7/CM9(ics) it will blow your mind. I'm pretty sure it's getting an official ICS update but the ics build we have now is phenomenal even at alpha stage.

Welcome! Hang out! I'm rooted, but not unlocked. Funny Kenny, I had my Evo for a year, I got Photon August 2nd 2011. I have used 4G EXACTLY 3 times!!!
Hello,
My most sincerest thanks again for the warm welcome. I have been with Sprint since 1999 and must say this is my favorite Handset by a Country Mile. Next comes Rooting and all that fun stuff.
I also love that when using ADW EX that the Motorola Widgets are available whereas the HTC Sense Widgets are not. And the difference with 4G staying connected is amazing. I was in Tampa/St. Pete today and the Photon never dropped Wimax whereas the 3D constantly did.
Cheers,
J

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about it?
Not to hijack but I'm totally opposite OP. Coming from Evo4g I think the Photon is a POS...I've had 3 replacements (reboot issues) and the 3rd still has trouble...mind you, all my issues are in heavy roam/no signal areas which I believe to be the factor but these probs didn't exist for my evo.
However, I recently flashed jokers cm9/ics and can vouch for Kenny's claims...this rom is sick as hell and so far my phone feels like a new unit. No crashes or issues yet in my roaming state, I can only cross my fingers at this point.
I'll likely jump ship if the Nexus hits anytime soon.
@cclarck, nothing personal, but do you think maybe it's you? you stated you flashed it, maybe your area does not like your radio? You also stated roaming?
Just saying. I have been reading for @ week on the Nexus, not impressed at all. (and if you have problems with Photon, good luck with the Samsung!)
Me specifically? No I don't believe so...now my photon in relation to my area...yes most likely. As you can see I'm a lurker but I have quite a bit of experience trying new roms/kernels on all my phones but the Photon has been nothing but frustrations to this point. That being said, it's not like there was a disclaimer on the Photon when I upgraded saying that it's radio would be complete sh!t compared to my evo while roaming, all while causing shutdowns requiring a battery pull/plugin.
I'd like to reinforce that cm9/ics so far is phenomenal, but 2 days soak is hardly extensive testing yet...
edit: Oh and I am certainly very scared to go to a Sammy, I think their build quality is the worst and I hate the plastic feel. My main reason for jumping aside from my photon history is wanting that huge screen; and I like the nex over the touch. Sprint needs more phones =(
If you want a huge screen skip the galaxy nexus and wait for the galaxy note. Sprint's definitely getting and that screen is even bigger. If you don't know what the galaxy note is check this out....

Yeah I don't like sammy either but this phone looks cool. I'm not going to get it as my contract expires this Feb. I may move my 2 lines somewhere else don't know yet. Sprints future looks promising with lte and all the hot devices launching but I simply can't wait till 2013 lol. I want to go back to gsm so I can swap sim cards as I please lol. God I hate cdma! I'm thinking att, definitely not t-mobile I worked there previously for almost 4 years. (I hate those bastards)
I've had att and never ever again, I've been through every carrier and they were the most frustrating with dropped calls and such. Unfortunately, my area is predominately Verizon but I missed the grandfathered data so no thanks to that too.
I dunno, every phone has it's fan base that disses on other brands and what-not so I get it. I haven't had Sammy experience since the Incredibad so maybe their build quality is better than I give credit...I def see a love/hate for every brand though, not just sammy.
I was in love with my photon when I first had it, even ignoring all the launch issues and replacements but it all eventually wore me down to never wanting a moto again =(

Perhaps you may want to look into this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211157
It's a bit of a pain to set up at first but once you do it's worth it. My calls drop all the time in my apartment with Sprint, but not at all using a Verizon PRL.
There's a danger of roaming too much and getting noticed by Sprint, but for most people it seems to take 3+ months for Sprint to notice, and even then you'll more than likely receive a warning letter first.
I've been using this over over 6 months and I've gotten 1 warning letter but when I inquired about it with a Sprint chat rep, he said I was not in danger of being cut.
So YMVM, but it'd help at least short-term.
Hello,
For some reason, I cannot stand Samsung. This extends to their TV's and other Home Theater Components. I am a Moderator on a Moderator on a AV Forum with close to 100,000 Members and find it hard to recommend them.
For whatever reason, I lump them in with Hyundai (I must say they have made huge strides over the past years since the $3,999 Hyundai Excel) Regardless, I tend to prefer the Japanese and American Companies. I know everything is manufactured in China or Malaysia.
Cheers,
JJ
I am ALSO Rooted but NOT Unlocked. My area is Saturated with 4G and I use it ALOT. I have Unlimited Mobile Hotspot (GrandFathered in since I have been a customer since 1997) and use it on my Samsung Galaxy Player5.0 and HTC EVO View 4G (while out and about). I only use WiFi on the HTC EVO View (Did Not want ANOTHER Data Contract) and just Tether to my Photon.

Would you recommend this phone?

Hey guys, long time android user here. Started out with the G1, then the Galaxy S, then a Viewsonic Gtablet, and am currently on a galaxy nexus and a transformer prime tablet, and have rooted and flashed multiple roms on each and every one, thanks to the wisdom and guidance found in the XDA community. My question is this: my wife is currently with tmobile and her 2 year contract is up. I want her to come to verizon with me (for many reasons) she will be coming from a HTC G2. Would you recommend this phone? I know it may be hard to be unbiased on this but please try. I've never had a hummingbird processor before, and the 8mp camera beats my 5mp on my nexus (at least on paper). She does heavy web browsing, google searching everything under the sun, not much on gaming, but we have a four year old that loves to use our phones for games so that wouldn't hurt. The main thing she uses it for is the camera, and video camera. Could some one possibly make me a short list of pros and cons as you have found them to be while using this phone as a daily driver? There is no one i trust more then members of the XDA community so your oppinions on this phone will pretty much make my decision for me, thanks!!

Short answer: Nope and I would not recommend Verizon either if you have any other choice.
This phone is outdated and no longer vendor supported, the boot loader is locked so its hard to get custom ROMs done and the stock GB android can be slow and now is 3 versions behind. Moto will not provide any more updates.
if you're doing it for monetary reasons, its an OK phone. You'll get an older higher end phone for $50 (07/14/2012) rather than a newer cheapo or freebie. It wasn't terribly successful due to the Bionic & Razr coming out shortly after and both offering more.
As mentioned above, OE support is dead. We have a nice community here with two ROMs that are still supported though.
Eclipse is rock solid stable and based upon the current 2.3.5 release from motorizon. There is also the alpha release of CM9 which will give you ICS. There were others but they haven't been updated.
As for the previous comments on Verizon, I wouldn't go anywhere else. The only other carrier in my area is ATT and if you actually want coverage you go with Verizon.
If I was getting a phone today I'd go Razr or S3.

Half the price, really? How many lines and what type of plan?
Thanks,
This phone is over a year old. Why would you choose this phone over newer ones? This phone isn't all that great. If you use it as is, its still buggy. The devs here make this thing worth having. But even then, devs are moving on to other devices now and Motorola isn't even giving us an official ICS update. So unless you plan on hacking this phone up for her, I wouldn't recommend it.
EDIT: A lot of people here are switching to to HTC Droid Incredible or the Rezound.

Move to West Virginia, Sprint and Virgin thrive and narry a Verizon or T-Mob tower in sight
