[Q] Fascinate on Page Plus/ICS ROMs - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm new to the world of Fascinate and am currently running my Fascinate on Page Plus. Using the stock TouchWiz ROM, I have 3G working with no problems. Once I flash to an AOSP ROM such as AOKP or MIUI, 3G no longer works. Does anyone know of anything I could be doing wrong, or if there are any files that I can modify to make 3G work on AOSP/ICS ROMs using Page Plus Cellular?
Thanks!

Thanks sir. I'm going to give that a shot.

Ok, I'm making some slight progress on this issue.
I ran an ADB logcat on the device (excuse me if I got the terminology wrong, very new to Android) and got the following message
E/ConnectivityService( 261): Exception trying to add a route: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Unable to communicate with native dameon to add routes - com.android.server.NativeDaemonConnectorException: Cmd {interface route add ppp0 default 0.0.0.0 0 66.174.168.64} failed with code 400 : {Failed to add route to default table (No such device)}

I/pppd ( 4014): Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyCDMA0
W/pppd ( 4014): Warning - secret file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets has world and/or group access
I had to dink around with the chap-secrets and pap-secrets some and it finally authenticated. Hopefully when I get past this it will be smooth sailing.

Damn this thing is kicking my butt. If anyone has any suggestions, please help
I'm getting the following message now in adb logcat
E/pppd ( 4275): Could not determine local IP address
I/pppd ( 4275): Connect time 0.2 minutes.
I/pppd ( 4275): Sent 97 bytes, received 58 bytes.

W/Netd ( 202): No subsystem found in netlink event
D/NetlinkEvent( 202): Unexpected netlink message. type=0x11
Almost acts as if it may be DHCP

I can't speak for MIUI (never tried it), but AOSP, AOKP, THS and CM9 ICS ROMs work fine for my on PagePlus. I've never had any 3G issues. I've never had to make any changes to get 3G to work.

Blackberry DUN Bluetooth Tethering Guide
WARNING!! FOR EXPERTS ONLY! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE CLICK AND DONE. IT MAY FRUSTRATE YOU!
This may or may not work for you, don't be surprised if it doesn't. Also Tethering may or may not be supported by your carrier. Data Plan recommended! @@
Your Mobile carrier may charge tethering fees, Continue at your own risk!
I suggest you read the whole thing before you action, and also please bare with my english, as it is my 3rd language.
Tether via Terminal: (Thanks lophyte for this great guide)
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...-gtab-to-your-blackberry-phone-via-bluetooth/
I did not develop any apps or any scripts of any kind.
This was all done with some extensive research and alot of Trial and Error.
But with the little information I found out there, I was able to find some pretty interesting things.
I found this app called Q5 DUN, which was designed for an Old Internet Tablet called the SmartQ5 and ran Android 1.5.....
Therefore support is very limited, and there was only 2 updates back in 2009.
Also, I will be quoting guides out there, but I will properly credit the author for their efforts & findings. (Mostly lophyte )
Also would like to Thank RimDroid helping me with the research.

What you need:
-ALOT OF PATIENCE!
- Rooted Android Tablet ( I'm using a HP TouchPad )
- Android 2.3.7 (Reported by nihjar that it works on ICS!!)
- Blackberry Mobile Device with DUN Profile. ( I'm using BB Bold 9700 with OS 6 installed ) *Other Mobile's may work, need further testing*
- Terminal app
- Root Explorer app
- Super User app
- Q5 Bluetooth Dial Up Network app by wsoft2002
- Berry4All Scripts
- Chat Binary compiled by lophyte (Originally compiled for GTab, but works on my HP Touchpad) or you can compile one, link in lophyte's guide. **NOTE**(Reported by nihjar that it works on ICS!!)
Currently there are two ways to tether BT:
Option 1: Using the Q5 Bluetooth Dial Up Network app and modifying the Build.prop <-- Easiest Method, but buggy! But once configured, works perfectly!
Option 2: Running terminal commands <-- Connecting Manually thru Linux commands.
We will be installing both options in this guide.

- Make sure DUN is enabled on your BB ( Search google for guides on this )
Step 1: Download and Install on Android
-Install Root Explorer (if you don't have it already)
-Install Terminal (if you don't have it already)
-Install Q5 DUN http://android.gval.biz/
Step 2: Download the following on your PC
Berry4All Scripts Here
Chat Binary compiled by lophyte to Tether with Gtab Link to his Guide Here

Download the berry4all package and find the config for your provider.
Berry4all is a Linux bluetooth tethering package that contains various pppd configurations for mobile providers. If your provider is not available in this package, you'll need to Google around for a proper pppd config and chatscript to allow you to tether to your blackberry or other mobile phone.

-Create a new folder which you will be placing the following files to better manage them.
-Copy the Chat binary file into the new folder.
-Extract bbtether and find the 2 files in /conf/ that corresponds to your mobile network, and copy those 2 files into the new folder. In this guide I will be using Rogers as an example. In this case, rogers & rogers-chat

Modify the configurations
I haven't looked at the configs for the other providers, but the Rogers config needed a little bit of modification. The following line in my ppp peer config file needed to be changed:
Click to collapse
Step 3:Modify the configurations
-Open rogers in a text editor ( I recommend Notepad ++)
-Find the line
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -f conf/rogers-chat
Click to collapse
& change this line to:
connect "/system/bin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chatscripts/rogers-chat"
Click to collapse
*NOTE* Edit the rogers-chat to which ever mobile provider you are using
-Find the line with 'novj' and place a # in front of it. Or Delete it, which ever is fine.
Your File should look like this:
# Tested by Max Taranukha

noipdefault
defaultroute
#nomultilink
ipcp-restart 7
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
lcp-echo-interval 0
lcp-echo-failure 999

pap-restart 20
lcp-restart 10

#debug debug debug
# does not exist in all pppd versions (osx)
#replacedefaultroute
connect "/system/bin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chatscripts/rogers-chat"
Click to collapse
**NOTE** Change UserName & Password that matches your APN settings.**
-Save and Exit.
Step 4:Now its time to copy these files to our Routed Android Devices.
-You will need to use Root Explorer to copy these files to your device, or Adb Push. ( Lookup the forums for on how to )
-Copy chat binary into /system/bin/ overwrite if prompt.
-Copy your mobile config files into these folders respectively.
a) rogers-chat -> /etc/ppp/peers (create this folders if it doesn't exist)
b) rogers -> /etc/ppp/chatscripts (create this folder if it doesn't exist}
-Reboot Device
-Once rebooted, you will need to pair your mobile device to your android device. Delete the profiles if it already exist, & pair again. (BT is buggy)
-Keep Bluetooth On.
Now here comes the most frustrating part... connecting!
Step 5:Configuring Q5 DUN
The best and easiest way to find you DUN MAC and Channel is using Q5 IMO,
but you can also use Linux commands. ( Terminal Tether guide above )
-Make sure you turn on BT, as this app does not toggle the BT on.
-Use this guide by wsoft2002 to configure Q5http://android.gval.biz/Q5_Bluetooth_DUN_installations.php
-In the Dial-Up Script, this is where the rogers-chat come into play.
-Open rogers-chat (your provider) file in Text Editor via Root Explorer.
-Select all Text and Copy in the the Dial-Up Script.
Your Dial-Up should look like this:
TIMEOUT 10
ABORT 'BUSY'
ABORT 'NO ANSWER'
ABORT 'ERROR'
SAY 'Starting GPRS connect script\n'
'' 'BBT_OS'
'' 'ATZ'
SAY 'Setting APN\n'
OK 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.com"'
ABORT 'NO CARRIER'
SAY 'Dialing...\n'
OK 'ATD*99#'
CONNECT
# Without ~p it does NOT continue passed Connect !!
~p
Click to collapse
*Note the "internet.com", this is where you put your mobile APN. ( Google search if your mobile is not in the bbtether folder ) or settings on your phone.
**Note that the 'ATD*99#' will differ depending on the carrier. You can try 'ATD*99***1#' if that doesn't work, (try to google 'your carrier' ATD)
***Thanks to Nijhar he found out that on Telus Network, ~p causes connection issues in Q5, so this may vary for you. (Trial and Error!)
****NEW**** Found * Another way to find you isp APN settings, using Blackberry Desktop Software, and plugging in the mobile device, you can browse all authorized BB carriers.
-Save Configuration & Hit connect to Test it out.
Allow the connection and checkmark 'Do not show again'
If you get 'PPP Connection is UP!' GREAT! Skip to Step 7.
-If you get 'PPP Failed to connect' then obviously it didn't work.
Now there are a few factors that causes PPP failed to connect.
a) Q5 not setup properly, I suggest you double check your settings.
b) Pairing problems, or Trust permissions. Re-Pairing might fix it.
c) Remove or Add ~p from the chat script.
d) Reboot both devices and try again.
e) Tether is not supported by your carrier.
f) Make sure Dial-Up Networking Service is enabled on your phone. in Bluetooth connections>paired devices>Touchpad (May vary depending on BB OS)
Step 6:Testing BT connection in Terminal
Q5 might not work for you, so Terminal will be your next Option.
-Open Terminal and type 'su' for super user rights.
-type the following '# rfcomm bind /dev/rfcomm0 <bluetooth MAC> <channel>'
-then type 'pppd /dev/rfcomm0 call rogers' <- change 'rogers' to your carrier.
-Look at your Blackberry 'Modem Mode Enabled' should appear if it connects.
-If it does not connect, please revise the guide and make sure you have done everything exactly up till now.
-'# killall pppd ' to end the connection
Step 7:Configuring DNS to Google's DNS or of your choise
-In Terminal
-Type 'su'
-Then 'setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8'
-Next 'setprop net.dns2 8.8.4.4'
*You can put as much as dns4 if you like, but Google's DNS should work fine**
Step 8:Testing Internet Connection
-Browsing
-Youtube
-Facebook
-Apps & Games (Trial & Error)
Step 9:Modifying the build.prop to eliminate setprop net.dns on reboot.
-Add net.dns1=8.8.8.8 & net.dns2=8.8.4.4
Working:
-Browsing the Web
-Streaming Video/Music
-Downloading Files using Opera Browser(Perfect), or xwind downloader app(Not perfect, but will work with any browser). Or use share link to Opera browser to DL using 'Choose Browser app found on the Market' -NEW-
-GO Launcher EX works great! Weather widget, facebook, e-mail etc all works! <~ If you want a fully functional homescreens, widgets etc
-Rogers,Telus & Bell Networks
Not Working:
-Android Market (Browse-able, but can't download anything)
-Google Currents
-Kindle App ( can log-in, but can't browse new books )
-Weather Apps ( News & Weather Works tho )
-Games
-Essentially any apps that cannot detect BT as Internet Source. Unlike most apps keeps trying to connect regardless of the 'available network'.

Simply amazing!! Thank you very much. Was waiting for the ROM update on my BB that would include wireless hotspot. That hasn't happened
Running a Torch 9860 with my rooted Touchpad. Just followed your instructions. Except I did not modify the build.prop file yet. I can't believe how fast this is!

Awesome! Does downloading work for you? and are you using Q5 or Terminal way?
I am using Q5. I only tried the Market. And as you stated, can get there but cannot download apps. As soon as I shut down Q5 and started up wifi, the apps downloaded. I am going to try Google Maps and Navigation to see if they work.
One question...does it matter where you put the net.dns1=8.8.8.8 & net.dns2=8.8.4.4 line in build.prop?
Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

anywhere works.
New Discovery:
Q5 DUN does not require the ppp files (rogers + rogers-chat)
It only requires the chat binary file /system/bin
So if you are not using the terminal way, you can safely delete those files without affecting Q5.
New Discovery 2:
Stock browser,Firefox Beta & Dolphin HD - all three can't download... lol
But...Using Opera Browser, I was able to download files!! Yay! I'm assuming this app does not rely on 'Connectivity Manager'. I'm so happy, as this is the only browser that worked out of 4!
New Findings! Check it Out!
Simply amazing!! 关注中!
Nice Guide Vamp.
Couldn't have done it better myself!
Tried the Amazon Silk Browser
This Browser rocks in terms of browsing speeds!!
Can't download with this browser.. bummer..
New Finding!
I found a Download manager that works with BT.
Xwind Downloader by JasonWong.
By using this DL manager, I can use any browser I want to browse, and use this manager to download!
Hello, I have a question. When you pair you BB to HP Touchpad, does your Bluetooth say paired but not connected? Is that ok, or do I need to fix it somehow for the Tethering to work? So far I'm not able to tether, so I was wondering if that was the problem.
Some info:
Hp Touchpad running cyanogenmod 7
Blackberry Torch 9800 with Rogers and data plan.
Thank you.

Hi Kryal,
It's suppose to say paired but not connected, that's normal.
All I can say is follow my instructions very carefully.
Which method are you using? Terminal or Q5?
Also make sure Dial-Up Networking Service is enabled on your phone. in Bluetooth connections>paired devices>Touchpad

This setting might differ from carrier: 'ATD*99#'
This is the modem command to connect for Rogers.. you will have to find out which one works for you.
Try this one: 'ATD*99***1#'
If that doesn't work, you will need to test on your own, as I am only able to test Canadian carriers.
You can find other ATD commands online, if this one doesn't work.

[Q] Reverse bluetooth tethering: connect YP-G70 to the internet via bluetooth

After realising the player won't connect to my Skype Phone S2 to nick the internet, I did a bit of "hacking":
1) Rooted the device
2) Installed Nook Color Bluetooth Tether from Google Play
3) After realising Nook Color is not working, tried running pand --connect, got "Failed to open control socket: Protocol not supported" error message
4) Dowloaded the Samsung kernel source and cross-compiled it to get the missing bnep.ko module for my kernel version.
5) Successfully inserted the mod (lsmod reports live). However pand --connect [address] does not return anything, neither does pand -l
I am running out of ideas how to get the player to connect to the skypephone. Any ideas?
I bought the player as a replacement of hx4700 (released in 2004), which was able to tether with my skypephone easily. I still can not believe that this modern device is lacking the feature.

Are you running pand from the Player? What does logcat show after? Are you running stock rom? Does "netcfg" show a bnep0 device?
If you have a 5.0, I can confirm that I've gotten bluetooth networking working using the CM7 ROM in the development section.
Thank you for informing me about CM7, but current alpha is not good for me though. I ll keep checking the progress.
logcat showed:
"E/pand (22197): Connect to 00:12:40:53:AC:A4 failed. No route to host(113)"
bnep0 is missing from netcfg output.
You think that uploading the compiled kernel, with bnep.ko might solve it?

I could be wrong, but I didn't think stock gingerbread android bluetooth stack supported networking. I know ICS does. But then again if pand is available..
Is hciconfig there? What does hciconfig -a show?
BlueZ
BlueZ (hciconfig) is not installed.
pand is from /system/bin, so it's not from BusyBox, which is in /system/xbin in my case.
How can I test that the bnep module is functioning?
P.S. might be easer to go for CM7, but I am running exactly the same kernel CM requires: rj13 (for international).

There's more to it than just loading the bnep module. It will be pretty tough to figure out what's going on without hciconfig/hcitool/l2ping. You could try
Code:
cat /sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/class
With CM7 bluetoothd this shows 0x5a020c on my player. The third byte (0x5a) shows the service classes supported, and the second bit is whether Networking is supported.
@ambrice,
Just realised that it's you who ported CM7. Kudos!
I am very tempted to try bluetooth tethering from CM7, could you address my concern that I will be running the same kernel (rj13), so how will ROM be able to fix my (possibly) not working bnep0?
>>cat /sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/class
cat: can't open '/sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/class': No such file or directory

There is a userspace component to setting up bluetooth networking. It's not all done by the bnep module.
It's weird that you have no hci0. Is your bluetooth turned on? Is there anything in /sys/class/bluetooth?
rj13 kernel is incompatible with CM7. However, the kernel that comes with the CM7 ROMs has bnep turned on, and I have been using it to do reverse bluetooth tethering.
Sorry did not realise the kernel for CM7 is different.
I am now running CM7 and still looking for tethering settings in GUI.
EDIT: Still can not find it

There isn't an easy gui setting to do that, the normal way to do bluetooth tethering is to run the pand connect from another device such as a PC, and CyanogenMod has a pand listening for connections and shares its internet, because the normal case is for a laptop to connect to a phone's cell network.
But running pand from the player should work now and give you a bnep0 device that you can configure. Easiest way is to put the steps in a script and run it to connect.
The bluetooth won't come on: says it's in airplane mode. Wifi ignores it though.
So should I fire up pand -c [address] from the player and I am ready to go?
Did not work when bluetooth was still on.

pand will get the bnep0 network device to show up. Then you need to use dhcpcd or ifconfig to configure the network device.

Still no bnep0 . The bluetooth is on.

for people who found this thread, here's a potentially very useful link:

I will see what I can make of it
CM7
I tried the above guide with CM7, and that's the error I got: "Couldn't set tty to PPP discipline: Invalid argument". pptpclient.sourceforge.net says it's just a matter of ppp_async module. I will see if I can get ambrice to include it into the kernel.
any progress or info on this?
I have tried entropy512 as well as rj's kernel and not found the beep module. I also loaded CM7 Rom and got a boot loop. I updated to CM9 and it booted but still no beep module.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Try ambrice's ppp_async kernel module with his latest CM7. Use the guide above to get the reverse tethering. That's the only solution I found so far.
Here's the module: http://www.2shared.com/file/PTXe8_Y-/ppp_async.html

[Q][08 Mar 2012]AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB2.3.7 CM7.2 | bk2sdext [KERNEL:ACA0114-35]

First Post so I cant send this to the dev forum for the actual build!
I am suffering from the lack of "3G" which I have noticed is widespread across many users for this build of Android.
To help the developers I have tried doing my homework...and it's fair to say that the 3G connection is connecting, however it isn't getting any data routed via the 3G connection.
I found this out by doing the following:
From the Phone keypad type *#*#4636#*#*
I made a note of the following settings.
Ping IP Addr: Fail: IP addr not reachable
Ping Host Name w w w.google. co. uk):Fail Host unreachable
HTTP Client test: Fail IOException

(yes loopback worked)
However....
In BusyBox:

The whole routing table is blank!
Now from what I have been taught this week, a routing table should at least have an ip address and an adaptor, a gateway via an adaptor, and an internal loopback address.
WIFI was turned off deliberately and so far has not been enabled. This was so that no settings were contaminated (plus I didn't have a wifi connection available to me at the time).
These settings were taken from a clean installation of the 08mar12 magldr version of the nand rom.
Developers....please please please help me in this matter - I am trying to do diagnostics by adding routes on the routing table or look at a cached routing table (if one exists).
This is a brilliant build of android - it's just a shame that there is this problem. I moved from the sd build to the nand build because I was so impressed - unfortunately this wasnt a wise move for the timebeing even as a stopgap until this problem is resolved - I can't go back to it because I dont have the pre 2012 sd build to hand and all prior sd releases from fileservers have been removed (....
Big thanks to the American Android and Cyanogenmod team so far for a brilliant piece of software development and programming!!!
Hope this data helps warrenb & copenhagen with diagnostics!

Hi, did you find a resolution to this. I'm experiencing the same problem with this build and orange UK.
Nope....still waiting on some expert assistance...or a new build that works...whichever is the sooner.

[Q] VPN PPTP not working on custom ROMs?

Does anyone have a working solution for PPTP VPN on custom O1 roms? I've tried a lot of ROMs and even CMs don't seem to have it.
It's an important feature so I'm a little bit disappointed that it's not yet properly implemented in these ROMs.
Sadly I'm not a Linux programmer so I couldn't fix it myself, but I hope some devs will see this post and tell me whether it would be possible to implement it in the feuture releases.
I'd be happy to assist in debugging if someone would try to fix the PPTP VPN module.
Here is the log (the error is always the same - Socket() Address family not supported by protocol) :

Thx. I'm going to try that.
[Edit]
Unfortunately it still doesn't work . DJNoXD's shows exactly the same error with hephappy's ICS.
I've enclosed the working VPN log with stock GB kernel and ROM (works only with encryption OFF).
I really hope developers can fix this problem in the next kernels / roms.

SUPERNEXUS 2.0 Build 4 : Wifi Tethering, may be the workaround found...

Dear all,
I wish share my experience, with Supernexus 2.0 Build 4.0 on my gs3, more especially with the wifi tethering.
Like most of people, i encountered the issue with the last version where wifi tether did not work, although in the release note, it is indicated as fixed.
So, like others guys, second device was properly connected to the wifi hotspot (it had an IP adress).
Ping to gateway OK... For me, all should be ok to provide internet to second device, but never.... :crying:
I decided, after many tests, wipes, re-install, to check logfile with logcat tools, and i found this :
05-06 08:29:14.255 D/Tethering(2264): notifying tethered with iface =null
...
...
05-06 08:29:20.775 D/libgps (2264): agps_ril_update_network_state: Waiting for IPC connection - timeout
05-06 08:29:20.775 E/libgps (2264): GpsiClient: Can't write to closed pipe
05-06 08:29:20.775 E/libgps (2264): IPC Communication Error, /tmp/11980989/proprietary/deliverables/android/gps_interface/../gps_interface/gpsi_client/GpsiClient.cpp:1143 agps_ril_update_network_state
05-06 08:29:20.775 D/libgps (2264): proxy_agps_ril_update_network_state: called
05-06 08:29:20.775 D/libgps (2264): agps_ril_update_network_availability: Waiting for IPC connection...
05-06 08:29:21.780 D/libgps (2264): agps_ril_update_network_availability: Waiting for IPC connection - timeout
Where id 2264 is regarding the tether process in activity for my test.
So, when i read logfile, I found this very weird :
05-06 08:29:20.775 E/libgps (2264): IPC Communication Error, /tmp/11980989/proprietary/deliverables/android/gps_interface/../gps_interface/gpsi_client/GpsiClient.cpp:1143 agps_ril_update_network_state
So, by curiosity, i enabled GPS by the toggle, and a miracle appear, the wifi tethering has worked perfectly.....
My second device connected to the hospot, can browse and get data from internet.... :victory:
May be, someone (an expert) can explain this, but for the moment I wish share this workaround with all.
See you,
Manuxme.
May be relevant to us, don't know. But should be noted the ROM you mention is for the international, just in case someone gets eager and tries using it.
We have hotspot unlocked for the most recent builds of TW.

All,
About the workaround indicated yesterday by enabling the GPS, actually, it does not work !!!!
I do not why yesterday it works. When GPS turn UP wifi tether works when turn down, it does not works. A strange luck ??!!
BTW, I continu investigations, tests and founds the really root cause (already found by people on other forum) :
Code:

Everytime, Wifi tethering is enable; this issue apear :

So, with a terminal emulator in root acces on the phone (example below in the screenshot), i launch exactly the same command line, and it works ?! :
Screenshot explanation:
1 - Check the new entry, added by the start of wifi tether process.
In orange, the exact command line launch on the terminal, in the history command line number 10.
Now, i sure, with this manual intervention, it works , the wifi tether allow other device to reach internet.
But why it failed everytime by the the normal way ? Is someone know ?
FOr the moment, i am going to try to write a shell script to add/remove the entry when necessary.
Thanks,
Manuxme.
