Am I the only one let down by both the EVO LTE and SGS3? - HTC EVO 3D

I've been trying to get myself to justify a decision of which phone to upgrade to. I've been with evo since the very first batch of OG's and i'v always been indifferent towards Samsung.
At first glance I thought i'd go with the gs3 because of its sleek design and removable battery, but after dissecting it a bit, something about it just isn't as appealing to me anymore.
If I buy the LTE on the other hand I feel that i'll regret it a lot. While it is a great phone in many aspects, it is severely flawed in just as many important ones.
It's the first android phone EVER to not have a removable battery and the bootloader is as locked as ever. While these two things may be easily overlooked by some of you, I feel that any true Android fan would be torn on going with any phone from HTC's new line of ONE/EVO's just based on principle alone. Not that I have anything against it, but I just can't be the guy who buys the "next HTC Android phone" just because it's the "next HTC Android phone". When a company is blatantly disregarding the consumer I find it hard to support them.
How many times have we ragged on Apple for not including a removable battery? How many times do we brag about having an "open" operating system? How many times do we glorify our expandable memory (referring to the ONE line of phones here)? How in the hell do you not question HTC's motives at this point guys?
you can check my stats, i'v been with HTC since day one...LITERALLY. Since the G1 came out i'v been an HTC user...but come on now.
End rant. lol
I just got my hopes up for the sgs3 announcement (strangely) and thought i'd have an alternative to the LTE but low and behold...
I don't know about you guys, but the evolutionary cycle of Android seems to be taking a turn for the worst. All of the phone manufacturers are completely disregarding consumer feedback and are focusing on more processing speed in order to fool the masses into thinking that more processors equates to "better performance"... I hate to say this, but I feel they are even fooling a lot of you "tech-savvy" folks here at XDA into think we need more than 2 cores on a 4 inch phone...Same thing goes for size. How in the world are 4.7/4.8 inches becoming the standard? I thought 4.3 was the biggest justifiable size as a standard, but I guess not...Say what you want about apple, but at least they realize that a phone is a phone and a tablet is a tablet. (p.s I hate them more than most of you sooooooo)
i don't know if i'm just severely sleep deprived or what, but this is the first time that i'v EVER been "Anti-Android".
End rant 2.
Anyways, back to studying for finals!

That's pretty debatable. In fact i'm willing to bet my life that the majority of Android users would argue against you.
Phones are evolving into "mini computers". Computers are not meant to have limited memory.
Also removing features like expandable memory is completely pointless.
If you read my post, I was trying to show that HTC has been very questionable lately. You may not mind not having expandable memory, but how would you justify HTC's decision to do that?

One X m8, easy decision.
The galaxy s 3, is still going to be a samsung, probably going to be able to cook an egg on it for being as thin as a razor with a quad in it.
I'd allow a little while before i signed up to that m8, the advertising is going to be epic for it tho, but like i said i'd allow it for a little while, let it get in the public domain b4 picking one up.
Wouldn't know about the evo LTE.

Ohhhhh lol. I was like wth are these dimensions for?
I personally don't mind having the bigger screens, it just doesn't make sense for that to become the standard on all Android phones.
When the OG Evo came out I thought it was on the larger size, but for me it was ideal because of my hands. I never envisioned 5inch phones would become an Android standard though. I see the purpose of the Galaxy Note, but other than that it just doesn't make sense to me.
We have 7-10 inch tablets. Why do we need such a ridiculous amount of screen space on a phone. I hate to refer back to Apple, but they have a much more flourishing app market than us and they've maintained a sub 4inch screen size. Like I said though, I think 4-4.3 inch would be a pretty ideal standard.

Yeah I agree 100% about having back-ups and what not.
But the principle behind releasing a "new phone" with less features doesn't appeal to me. And I highly doubt that HTC opted with not included an SD card because they were concerned with battery life.
If we were to judge usefulness of cell-phone features i'd say expandable memory is just as important as a camera. While we can debate that forever, it's my opinion because I use my sd card a lot. Much more than my camera in fact....I can't be the only one.
I also use my phone as my main media driver, whether it be music or movies, I use a lot of storage.
I wouldn't mind streaming everything since I have unlimited data and can buy spare batteries for $10 on ebay....oh wait.

Worried about my htc amaze 4g

I'm hearing everywhere that the phone will be obsolete in a couple of months. I'm scared I might get out dated when I just bought this phone like 1 months ago. Should I get rid of it and get a sgs2 while I still can or what should I do?

Even if HTC were to discontinue the phone today it's still a 1.5ghz dual core 4G phone. The SGS2 is pretty much identical in specs. If the phones are so similar and the Amaze is no longer in production but the SGS2 is, then is the Amze "obsolete?" Your definition of obsolete must be different than mine.

im sorry, i used a poor choice of words. i was in a hurry when i wrote this. By obsolete i meant that htc will not be supporting us and will stop sellin the phone.
With the second generation dual core and first generation quad cores on the horizon. Not to mention the big hardware specification push, it is/will be soon obsolete. Does that make it irrelevant, no.. Hell computers are obsolete before you buy them for the most part. Just live with and enjoy your device...

I agree. You have a two year contract when you purchase a phone with a discount. Who here thinks that T-Mobile shouldn't start offering new phones before your two year contract expires? Seriously! The phone has been out for what... three, four months now? I would say that's pretty good actually. Don't worry about the phone itself though. You still have a 1 year warranty which will still be honored should you require service. It's still a powerhouse of a phone and we're expecting an update here very soon. So... what's the problem? You guys are acting like it's the damn G1.
You know to be honest I was expecting a better phone to come out about a month after ours did. I'm surprised that it didn't. But I'm saying this to people that are suprised that in this day and technological age your phone is old and outdated before you can manage to buy accessories for it. Just look at it this way... iphone fans are constantly being screwed by Apple and their yearly releases! You wait in line overnight to buy the new iphone 4GS or whatever and nine months later Apple teases you with the new iphone 4GS2 for a super low price of $600 because you're still on contract. Else they can wait for another year for the release of the iphone 5 or whatever. It's a sales gimmick and that's all there is to it. Yet you guys are surpised to see this with HTC? Naive I think.
Only thing you need to worry about is awful Dev support.
Im sorry I like XB and the others but this phone has just about zero Rom selection compared to SGS2 and other phones. Nothing even close to a workable ICS build.
The phone itself is fantastic mostly due to the camera , HW isnt what you should be worried about.

It might be "just a phone" but I paid a large chunk of cash for my phone and I don't like getting screwed over by Google.......not to mention Apple's bait & switch marketing.
Smartphones "smart" once you find out your phone will be semi-obsolete as is the case here with Google trying to tell software & hardware developers what to do.
stefnuts
All of this is true but don't you all feel that the htc amaze is a bad phone? You can't have a case because you lose WiFi signal, you have to put electrical tape on the back of the phone to prevent the flash from messing up your pictures at night, the haptic key light bleeds in the screen, the faceplate on the back creaks really loud when putting pressure. I did not pay over 600 for a phone to have so many problems.

T-mo news did post an article stating that the amaze 4g is reaching "end-of-life" and will he discontinued soon. This may lower our chance of getting more dev support, but let's be thankful for who we do have which is some great developers like xboarder, faux, and now nrg... Just have patience, soom good stuff is going to be coming to us in the near future, we just need to wait. No one has a perfectly running ICS with no bugs we arent far behind guys we will have what we want soon

I do not see why it is such a big deal they won't be producing htc amaze anymore(if that is true). anyway even the htc ville we are expecting to come out in march or the samsung bliss, they have nothing special, same dual core cpu, same speed + the camera that the amaze has is one of the best in the market. So I find all this "worried about my amaze" a little too exaggerated. and yes it is just a phone, if you are concerned just go sell it back and buy a new one when it comes out. hope your worries about the htc amaze do not keep you from living a normal life...extra stress is never good
I love my Amaze. I knew about the "flaws" before I bought it. To my amazement, it's better than I thought and read about. I fortunately do not have the creaking back cover(there's a fix), Wi-Fi range is awesome even with a case, GPS locks in seconds even inside the house, battery life last all day, awesome ROMs available (thank you devs, you know who you are, lol) the list goes on. No LTE, no sd card slot, LG, not a very good upgrade in my opinion. Seems like manufacturers are moving backwards. I understand their reasoning for no lte, it more of a world phone that way, but definitely a backwards step in terms of missing features.

Depending on your area, T-Mobiles "4G" (HSPA+) is just as fast in the real world as LTE, especially from Sprint. Not a killer imo.
$300 superphone phone off contract? That is not moving backwards.
Personally Im not going anywhere due to this ol' contract of mine. But if they keep this up, switching to T-Mobile and $30 a month bill with a $300 superphone sounds really freaking great to me. Will have to see what it looks like next year though.

The Nexus 4 runs a quad core S4 (with Adreno 320, not our stopgap 225), 2 gigs ram, 720p RGP Stripe screen , bluetooth 4.0, USB host, and all the sensors you could want, plus built in inductive charging.
How is that not a superphone? It outspecs/ties anything on the market, certainly anything based on the S4 Plus like our EVOs, and I still consider my phone to be a superphone. If storage is such a concern, bring a thumbdrive with you for your offline media, it doesnt change the fact that the guts of the phone are the best you can find on the market shy of the Nexus 10.

Lack of an SD card isn't a deal breaker for me. I rarely store music or movies on my phone anyway.
After moving through multiple Samsung Phones and now an Evo, I'm just tired of waiting months for an OS update. I will probably switch to buying Nexus devices exclusively when my contract is up.
The fact that the unlocked Nexus is not much more than I usually pay for a subsidized phone may be the reason I switch off of Sprint.

Well, it started with the many replacements of the tbolt, then HTC's hard stance against updating their tablets kinda pushed me over the edge, then they updated the flyer/view to broken software and they wont even fix it. Now the Rezound is having touchscreen issues. So I'm just tired of dealing with the problems and the lack of OEM support after purchase. I appreciate the Dev community for the zound, but sammy seems to be stronger in that dept. So I think I am going to give them a shot. I won't touch Moto with a ten foot pole. It may be a bad move, but I'm willing to take that risk after all the issues I have had recently with HTC. So for me, from here on out, it's going to be Nexus, or Samsung.
Samsung is worse.
I love my Rez and I still think of it as probably one of the, if not the most undervalued android phone released to date, but I don't see myself going for yet another carrier exclusive device after this. Of course, reviews might be so great for the DNA that I could change my mind but so far I am not that impressed.
Having said that however, the lack of a LTE capable Nexus 4 kinda limits the options for those looking to upgrade atm and I really cant see myself with a Galaxy S device. Wish Sony would be given a chance at penetrating the US market, they seem to strike a fair balance between corporate dev support, hardware and software quality.
I'll be getting this. The hardware and build quality will be top notch, it can be unlocked through HTCs dev website and be able to load cm. It was between this and the note but son, I am dissapoint at it having the older gen exynos and 720p screen on a 5.5 inch screen.
no, my next phone will be honor 2 or note 2
battery is important factor to me now

Its looking like ill most likely be getting it. I'm thinking ill be getting the DNA and one other new gen phone probably a GSM phone since I have two contracts, one with ATT and one with Verizon.
But I will be more careful than usual with this purchase. I'm currently so broke I can't afford the down payment on a grilled cheese sandwich. But this phone is a priority, and I owe it to the BAMF community. So I've been saving my pennies and will be selling some stuff to raise some funds.

samsungs radios and signal are 10x worse.
in my house, my gs3 gets about 6kbps download on 3g.
my rezound, when its not pulling 4g in my house (which the nexus and GS3 CAN'T), pulls atleast half a meg to a meg per second. doing anything on the gs3 on 3g is terrible, and ridiculously slow. fb app won't even load. rezound loads it no problem. hell, i even tethered 3 tablets to my rezound last night and while we were all browsing at the same time, ti was STILl faster than my gs3
i don't think i'd buy antoher samsung phone ever again, and i really want the DNA...dunno if i wanna fork out 600 bones for it tohugh

HTC M7 Spec and Speculation Thread

http://htcsource.com/2013/01/new-pictures-of-the-htc-m7-and-sense-5-reveal-new-details/#That's right folks, it's been but a few months since the release of the DNA and we are already seeing HTC propose a new flagship device that will supposedly launch in 2013!
Everything below here is subject to change
The Specs (what we think we know)
-4.7 ' 1080p "Solux" Display
-32GB internal memory
-13mp camera
-2mp front facing camera (capable of 1080)
-2,300 mAh battery (no word on removability)
-aluminum uni-body chassis
-2GB of RAM
-468ppi
-1.7Ghz quad core Adreno processor
-4G LTE support (don't think I had to mention this one)
-Jellybean OS
-Possibly Sense 5
-Possible 4-carrier support
-Beats audio integration
Expandable memory options are not yet known but are most likely non existent
What I think right now is we will see this show cased at Mobile World Congress.
I will update this thread as news comes out about this beast and openly encourage whomever may read this to correct any errors I have made
Feel free to discuss any aspects about the phone in this thread, any speculation regarding anything about HTC and the M7's release, marketing, pricing, and "downfalls" is absolutely welcome so long as disrespect for other users is completely non-existent.
Update 1/21/2013:
Sorry for not updating way sooner however I have been busy!
Some new pictures surfaced recently of the M7, purportedly running Sense 5, which as some of you know has not been released yet. Pictures are here!
Furthermore, there have been some more rumors which indicate a possible announcement of this handset at MWC!

Oooo, seems like it would be a nice device. However I have no idea why you would need a 1080p display on a 4.7" device, but if it doesnt absolutly drain the battery why not?

Absolutely agreed friend, however from what I have heard the DNA's battery already holds up well with a 5' display to power. Should be interesting to see some of the opinions regarding battery for this

Its hard to believe they just came out with the DNA and were already talking about a new device that is slightly better on paper spec wise. I think it might make a few people mad since they just bought the DNA and now there is already something new.
Sounds like a neat phone

I had believed from the start that they were going to release something a bit better shortly after that would have larger memory, just a marketing ploy I suppose

Technologically, it is a beast but it is hamstrung by a lack of storage and a questionable battery. Whether HTC or Verizon is to blame we'll never know. Either way, it missed the mark. I have to believe its not just the hard core crowd that noticed. Their announcement on Facebook was absolutely blasted by comments pointing out these omissions.

Was Verizon. HTC wouldn't release the butterfly with the storage and omit it in the US. Verizon wishing everyone was streaming it more likely the culprit. Tis true, lots of people were upset. The DNA isn't a bad device, just limited.

I agree with what you are saying for the most part. I agree it got blasted for its "small" battery before it was even used by anyone, which put a sour taste in a lot of mouths. After owning mine since the week after launch, I have nothing but amazing things to say about the numerically "small" battery. I was skeptical at first, but it turned out far from questionable for me, and the added rigidity of the non-removable back is great. I hate squeaks and creeks.
The storage gripe I completely understand. Personally it has had no effect on me, but I can sympathize for those who need/want more, especially in a day and age where file sizes are massive and people spend multiple hours on their phones.

Apparently the chipset is substantially different; dedicated chip for camera and special LTE chipset which has lower power requirements (as on the DNA). I'm very nervous about a non-removable battery, but I've always been OCD about that with multiple chargers and always carrying a spare battery in my briefcase. I'd also really like to see removable storage (since I have a 64g card in my Rezound).
Most importantly, however, will be the ability to unlock the bootloader and an easy way to S-OFF. My upgrade period starts around May of 2013 and hopefully by then there will be alternatives to stock for the device. I bought my Rezound the second day it was available and the first few months of no-root were painful, even though the devs came up with a temp root within a couple of weeks. If HTC and Verizon Wireless lock things down, I'm going to look elsewhere.
The non-removable storage is a total troll move by Verizon. They push you to a tiered data plan, then minimize your storage capabilities and tell you to use cloud storage forcing you to buy more data. Up yours, Verizon.

I could live with the "small" battery as I'm never far from a charger for long. The storage was the deal breaker for me. I work a lot of 12 hour shifts, no WiFi at work, and like to have plenty of music on hand. Also, having kids, it'd tick me off if in the middle of shooting a video I'd run outta space and lose recording a memory.

If its multi carrier it might be worth looking at. I want the note 2 so bad but I don't want that low ppi. I'm hoping the note 3 will be 1080p. However, after this one, im never buying a carrier specific phone again. And I'd almost prefer not to buy HTC phones since other manufacturers are doing better with long tern updates now. But I do love the premium feel. Just depends. But those specs are sick.
So much for HTC sticking to their game plan of spamming less phones in the market. Company is going to be RIP at this rate.

Well I think this is a great opportunity for them. When has "spamming" the market really gone horribly for a manufacturer? I don't hear Samsung complaining about their Galaxy line up...or Moto complaining about their Droid Razr line up. I think HTC has been too conservative with releasing devices and I think it's time they change up their game. Anything for them right now would most likely be a saving grace

HTC One

How does everyone feel about this device? I'm a year away from an upgrade so I won't be getting it, that and its not on Verizon. I really love the look of the phone, and I like Sense, just not that new UI screen.

After the Rezound I'm officially done with HTC for good, if it want for the developer community we (luckily) have I would have bought a GNEX off contract. It's not just the Rezz either, from the thunderbolt to the One X and S HTC is consistently lagging behind. Finally and most importantly they diffuse to keep yo with android as a whole, were the years into on screen nav keys and HTC still continues to use causative buttons ( so much more screen room, still on that ugly ass green color when the blue is much more inviting it also clashes with Google apps. It looks like Motorola and sammy have finally stepped it up so that's where I am going.

Samsung has been on the ball the last few phones they have released yes the charge was an abysmal failure but as of late moto and Sammy are leaps and bounds over HTC which is a dam Shame because I love their cameras, radios, screens, and design.

If it's true that a VZW version will drop as the DNA+ in a couple of months, that will be my next phone. Identical specs to the One and it's supposed to have microSd card support as well. Basically, what the DNA should have been in the first place.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
No way. Not doing the ril stuff anymore. Really delays Rom development.
Rezound, s-off, loving it.
Pretty tempted to go with Sammy for the next phone too..ive done the Moto/LG/HTC experiences..guessing its about time for me to join the sheep of the Android world and get a Galaxy (unless the rumored Moto X phone is really something beastly). Hope the SGS4 won't disappoint, not a fan of their design and build quality but hard to be disappointed with their hardware and software. I'll probably still be on the Rez for a bit longer anyway though..VZW will probably lag way behind again in releasing the SGS4, and I hate paying full upgrade pricing when I can wait 2 or 3 months and have the price halved or even better. Still love the Rez in its own right. I never had any real complaints about the Rez (and yes, especially because of the amazing devs we have here) but I hope my next phone is 1. Lighter (it's about the same weight as my old Droid 2 for god's sake) 2. is considerably better on battery life. Camera/reception/screen etc. I think have always been fantastic on this device.
I am VERY curious though to see a battery test on the HTC One..battery seems like it's fairly decent in capacity, but I wonder how much more (if even) that new cpu will get out of it.

I'm not understanding this. HTC is a failing company because they are failing the consumers that were once loyal. My first phone was the DINC and I love that thing, I still love my Rezound as well it's a great phone and I got so much more than with the GNEX and RZR. HTC even began unlocking boot loaders for those who wanted I was really high on my HTC horse but the more and more I hear about the update problems HTC is having while others are moving forward clearly shows that buying a new HTC device is a gamble. I mean the RAZR is getting OFFICIAL JB. Another thing to consider the incredible 4g came out after the Rezound with worse specs and that was it until the DNA came out? They move a step forward them two steps back it makes no sense. I will say however Motorola is also guilty of this in Some ways with the max line just like HTC + lines. Samsung is winning the battle because sadly they are just ding it properly. I hope I see HTC make strides over the year because I will be leaving Verizon sooner rather than later. Pretty sure I'm going to switch to T-MO everything unlimited plan no contacts or carrier chains sounds amazing and new nexus devices whenever I feel like it straight from Google. Sounds like heaven.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
While it sure does look pretty, the inability to upgrade external memory via sd card and untested battery life are so far keeping me from upgrading.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I wish phone makers and carriers would stop pushing that cloud crap. Only reason phone makers likes it is because they can stop putting a SD slot in save money and then charge the same price. The carriers likes cloud because with no more unlimited plans on many of the carriers. That means more people will run the risk of going over and they can charge outrageous overage fees.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Non removable battery or if the phone doesn't have more that 32 gigs no sale. I don't believe in the cloud for all my data or my music. I don't like to use the cloud for privacy reasons and it drains my battery faster. Only cloud I use is my own or ssh to my own computer and get files that way. I do like this phone but my rezound experience has been less than stellar. Thinking I'll give Samsung a try on there next phone.

dude a bigger gas tank doesn't solve that at all hahaha you're still getting horrible mielage out of the engine with all that power. just bc you have a 25 gallon tank now doesn't mean you're going to get more than 10mpg lol
everybody cries about battery. i don't care; i carry my backpack with me where i go, which includes a charger, 2 spare batteries, and my 10,000mah external charger. and at home, i've got a 5500mah solar external charger by Joos. to me, battery life isn't a big deal. my DNA got the same/better battery life than my S3 does.

A bit of tact would flatter you, unless you're a teenie bopper, in which case I'll forgive you. You have a point and while the software and hardware has steadily improved in utilizing the batteries, I d still say it's still far from ideal.
I'm glad you don't mind carrying all that extra stuff around but I'd like to be able to rely on the device and the battery that comes with it, rather than having to resort to additional measures.
