Motorola feedback network - Motorola Photon 4G

OK so I know we already have seen a test release I just got a email from Motorola at 12 am offering me a new soak test of a finalized release..... they say this not a beta its what the final release will be.... currently I'm unlocked and running numerous roms at a time..... so what I'm wondering is if this is the same test already seen or something new.... anyone else still receiving or received one last night? I want to try it but scared to

dont do it, its 2.3.5 locks you bootloader and IMO breaks hdmi out

I got that email too, so if I do it, can I still root my phone? That's all I care to be honest, I need my 4g speeds lol
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium

yes you can root, if you want to be lazy use voodoo root ota keeper in teh market to backup root

Since I'm rooted stock, and just waiting for stock ICS, I signed up for this. Custom ROMs not important to me on this phone.

I got the email as well. Im not even going to bother with it.

I'm doing it mostly out of hope that I'll have a better chance of being part of the ICS test.

How dies it break hdmi out. Or was that the first version. If this is revised I'm ok with that i am going to give it a shot ive found my 45.3.7 is a little buggy.

When they release the ICS update they will more than likely implement the same unlock kill method as found in the 3.5. And who wants a blurred ics with no ability to install custom roms? We need the release solely for the kernel and drivers. So even if it was ics, no one should update who plans on keeping the ability to flash customs. Then again, I'm sure it won't be long before a dev finds a way around this permalocking bull****.

Me - I'd be quite happy with that.
Although, I do vehemently object to Moto's locking on philosophical grounds. I'm still a hacker, but personally don't find much incremental value in customizing ICS. (Have stock ICS on my Xoom) I satisfy my hacking needs on the hardware side nowadays (not phones, other embedded things)

I didnt mean to exclude anyone. I know having 4g is important for some and keeps people locked. Others just don't know or don't care. But i feel comfortable in stating that 'most' people found in these forums arn't here to stay on stock, but to expand their phones capabilities to the edge of what is possible. I for one don't understand how anyone can see all the amazing work being done around here and not want to get involved. Being locked down would drive me insane. But eh, different strokes for different folks i suppose.

"Involvement" for 'most' people here involves nothing more than whining and demanding things 'the way I want it because everybody wants it that way.'
Personally, I value root access over everything else. That's what makes me happy. I have minor tweaks on my stock ROM that apparently have enough boost to where I don't see an improvement by flashing something else. I have yet to find a hacked-up 'upgrade' which runs as good or better.
The only thing I've gained so far from flashing different ROMs is too much visual candy which I can't stand and a handful of software that I somewhat rely on which either currently doesn't support anything above 2.3.5 or affects my daily use in a negative way.
But yeah, I'm with you. Do what makes you happy. And if it matters, I probably won't do the Motorola update that this thread was intended to talk about.

Hey, friend, no offense taken. You are very correct - most people here want custom ROMs. I enjoy watching and listening here, and fully understand and respect those who want custom ROMs.
Frankly, I probably burnt out in the WinMo days; I never just "had a phone". I now just like having a phone, and spending my hacking time elsewhere.
Cheers!

Maybe ICS Rollout to Test Users ?
I am keeping my fingers crossed for an ICS test rollout. According to Motorola ICS schedule, the ICS will supposedly rollout in Q3 for MoPho, which isn't too far.
It would be a shame if Moto sent this survey signup for another Gingerbread update. :-(

I recieved an email from them yesterday morning. The link brings me to a page saying the test is now for a Final Release. This is gonna be a GB 2.3.5 release for now. ICS in Q3 could mean as late as Sept 30, if Moto is on time with it.
For me, I'm not changing a thing. 4G is not available where I live and probably won't be for a while, if at all. So I value the ability to root and unlock more. After tryin different ROMs I'm liking blur less and the cleaness of AOSP more.
Right now the only thing I miss about blur is to have a separate notificatiin for VM instead of it being lumped with my SMS notifications, but I'm about to figure out what I want for that, too. After all, "There's an app for that".
My MoPho's in the kitchen sink!!

If you're using google voice, you can alleviate that by signing into your google account at their actual website and finding your good voice settings.

2.2 update..

So apparently the myTouch 3G is getting an official 2.2 Froyo update. If so, then what's stopping us from getting it? Correct me if I'm wrong but don't we have basically the same or better hardware than it? Or is it a choice of Verizon's whether or not to give us the update?
You can read more about the MT3G announcement here http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog/2010/06/mytouch-3g-will-see-2-2-soon-not-2-1/
average folks working for free in their spare time are going to take a lot longer then a group of 20 or so software developers at htc being paid full time. so... really chill out, the devs are doing the best they can.
it still is good news though, once it's released i dont think the devs will have any problem at all porting it over.
EDIT: okay, i might've jumped to the wrong conclusion after re-reading your post. I'm just so used to so much bad mouthing and drama that I guess I got carried away.
Anyway, Verizon is really slow at sending out updates. they constantly check and recheck and tell the companies to change so many things that it's really complicated to get them out as quick as t-mobile does. if HTC is making one for the MT3G (hero), there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they're working on one for the eris as well, they probably just havent announced it because they are waiting for verizon to greenlight it.

I think Verizon will roll out the 2.2 by the end of Q3 seeing as the just popped the official 2.1 out(which from what i have seen is very buggy)
Even if they dont, when the official Froyo for 1.2/Fender is OTA'd the Eris port will fallow VERY shortly(since the 1.2 is basically and Eris in a Magic case)
BTW Hero CDMA=Sprints version of the Magic
Hero GSM= is Tmobile UK "G2"
Just sayin'

Yeah I wasn't badmouthing. I hate all the drama in these forums lately. I know the devs are working on a 2.2 port, but I was just stating that if the MT3G can get it what's stopping us from getting it? I'm hoping Verizon will greenlight it if they are working on a 2.2 update. And if they aren't we'll always have a dev who will make a rom for us.
2.2 will probably be available for rooted Eris within hours of source being posted, though I do hope Verizon doesn't drag their feet for the sake of those unwilling or unable to root.

Agreed. Plus I would think it'd be better to have the 2.2 that was made for the eris to make the rom, rather than just porting it so everything will work. Although it may be just as easy for some people.

Will it be able to root from 2.1? Maybe get the leaked users out of the gutter?

it's a real good chance that the hboot for a 2.2 rom will be a higher number, so IF verizon/htc go forward with a 2.2 update for the eris, and we can get it rooted? leakers might be able to root.
Lets hope so. I would so love to root my phone. No more jumping the gun for me. I'll be waiting for an official ota or root. No more leaks for me.

so i think that if there are not developers for the photon 4g then photon will die soon
what u say about this ??????

I Just want to know what the hell it is you people expect?
20, 30 Roms? That all use a slightly different deodexed base? and have a different set of icons or themes? And all introduce a new set of crap that only partially works?
I mean really - there are only so many things you can do to a rom before they all become the same damn thing with a different name and "dev".
Most of what I see out there is a guy tweaking his phone, removing bloat ware, claiming "ZOMG Battery and Speed!", dumping /system into a Zip file and that someone else made and posting it for someone else to flash to their phone
Want to learn how to do it?
Flash aliens rom, tweak it how you like it, add some icons and themeing (the brunt of the work).
adb pull /system/ C:\Users\Username\Desktop

Copy all of that into Aliens Zip file, post it is a rom for people to flash - almost 0 effort to do anything but the art - which you can steal from just about anyone online and call it a "port".
/rant
That was just rude. .. this is best phone but when you compare Bionic and stupid 3d threads...well i see what he means ...and Roms are not usually the same.. Some have performance tweaks...like 4g on unlocked bootloader. Speed increase, themes and mods.. Nothing wrong with him trying to get or rally development support like some of the inferior phones have. Remember, this is a development site...

Not a function of the Rom - Lockfish (I think?) has just been able to figure out how to fix it outside of the issue with the bootloader.
I'm not being rude - I was being honest, but there is a thread at least every other day talking about how lack luster our dev section is. This IS a development forum - and I showed him (really basically) how to make a rom. No?
Honestly, when you get 5 or 6 different roms out there - there are enough similarities between them and not enough differences that there really isn't much of a point. 99% of what most people experience from ROM to ROM is placebo.
It appears both the OP and Kcarp were both in the wrong on this one, and for this reason:
OP - Phone development will progress only as fast as sources are released. This phone is still new enough to where developers are still waiting on critical components to really be able to customize this phone. Do not expect this forum to jump off like an HTC (insert model here) forum, but instead, anticipate seasoned developers finding and introducing mods, tweaks and more efficient ways to unlock the bootloader over the coming weeks/months.
Kcarp - C'monnnn man, you're better than that rant. You've been around long enough (hell, I remember ya from the Hero days) to know that these types of threads pop up weekly, and sometimes it's best just to ignore them. I know you meant well, but the last thing we want to do is scare off future developers from posting here as this phone gets older, when so many are leaving XDA as it is.
I am also getting sick of these whiny threads. This phone gets close to the battery life of my evo shift running a cm7 clone, locks gps about 100x's faster and gets a better data and call signal everywhere. My phone is stock rooted with no bloatware touched. It may take some time but even IF development never goes far with this phone, i'd still be happy with it.

This phone is Damn near the Best you are going to get out of the box. All those other phones NEED Rom's to run as good as our phone does Out Of The Box. Moto has updated this phone 3x in less than 2 months ALREADY (it would take Sammy 2 years to update the SGS2 3x). There is a rumor I have seen that Moto is working on ANOTHER update for this Amazing phone.
I could careless if I get ROM's or not. It works Great for me as is. I was lucky enough to get Grand Fathered into Unlimited Mobile Hotspot Data since I have been a customer since 1997 and spoke with a Retentions Manager (Politely) and she took care of me). No 5G Cap for me and my area is 4G Saturated. Use the Hotspot for my Xoom, HP Touchpad and Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. I am Very, Very Happy with this phone.
Had the OG EVO before this phone and was putting ROM's/Kernels on it all the time (last one was Synergy SC2). Got tired of that. It's nice to just have a phone that WORKS like it's supposed to without ROM's.

Big +1 here. Epic 4g needed roms just to last a day on battery and to be fast enough to keep up with certain applications. Problem with the ROMs is that even journaled, they'd get buggy after a few weeks, or there would be just something about a ROM that would annoy me. Once it got dual boot capability I was flashing ROMs left and right. It got to be where I was flashing ROMs just to flash ROMs, like I forgot other ways to kill boredom.
I don't feel an immediate need to flash ROMs. If CM7 comes stable to the photon I'll probably try it just to see what the fuss is about. However, I'm more interested in eventual ICS. I'm happy for root because of Titanium backup and other such things that you need root to run. The battery is great, and it's plenty fast enough. There is one thing about this phone that no ROM could give me on the Epic 4g... the ability to make a phone call at work. The antenna is far superior.

Take a walk outside for some fresh air.
Messages like these will not motivate any dev in getting 'cracking'.
what do you mean, it is doing just fine.....they have been plugging away at getting CWM working....which without leaves most users at a disadvantage cuz some people just seem to have issues with oden and ADB. now that they have an alpha of CWM roms will be coming next. and i also think that since ICS is coming up the future that devs are waiting for that. why keep dropping ginger roms? and i see them working on ICS roms as well. we have a stable ginger rom in TPC's/da g's kernel mix. i still see the same devs working and plugging away and we have more now than we did 2 weeks ago...
they are working, and like you said.... they are working on there own time and for FREE.
we should all be greatful. when they stop working be worried.
I think ICS is in the works. The DEV just wants to clean up some of the other issues he is working on. Yes this is vague but I do not want to over step my bounds.

I too am eager however the one and only rom we have is stable. I can wait for ICS as long as it takes. We have an overclock kernel as well. With other devices I have seen dozens of roms and dozens of kernels with only one or two having full functionality. We have been very fortunate. With that said there seems to be less than the usual amount of Development on this device but remember this is brand new. It takes a while... with the streak we only had a few devs and even then at one point really only one dev. Give it a few weeks. If not do like I am and imerse yourself in reading on how to make roms. I develop android apps and have a few in the market, now that does not qualify me to make roms it does mean that I have the ability to learn like many others could do if they were motivated to do so.

NO. You will brick your device if you try to flash international ROMs, as they have a different processor as well as other various differences that essentially make them completely different beasts with the same form factor.
Reading a bit more would inform you as to why development is slow right now and why you can't flash international ROMs.
To give you the sparknotes version of what's going on however:
As others have said, we only have an alpha version of CWM, so devs are working on getting that polished up.
Second, devs are working on a way to get around the flash counter, so that you do not have any problems with a warranty exchange in the future. If you don't care about your warranty or want to risk a return with a triggered flash counter, go for it. Other phones have had their flash counter bypassed, so I'm sure our talented devs will come up with a solution fairly soon.
Also, as others have mentioned, we have one stable ROM already, and a great kernel, so that should solve most problems with using the stock ROM until more development occurs.
Lastly, with ICS on the horizon, there is not really a good reason to produce a ton of GB ROMs, so be patient and use the stable one we have already until ICS drops in a few months or so.
The longest anybody has had this device is 11 days right now, and we already have a stable ROM and OC/UV capable kernel. In my opinion, that's a damn good start, and I have a feeling that development will eventually be huge on this device. Give it a few months. =]

I feel the same way. ATT and Samsung know they need to do something to pull ahead of android competition; they've done it with quality android hardware, now they need to do it with consumer peace-of-mind on the software upgrade front. Nowhere has Samsung said that ICS for "international note" is coming in Q1 2012. They merely say it is coming to the "note", period. I think ICS will come for the US variant sooner rather than later. I know when I got my Atrix, people whined and hollared that it would never get GB. ATT delivered GB very soon, to the scorn of the red-faced naysayers. I know the Atrix was Motorola, but its still an example of a carrier pushing a fast update. Samsung is an excellent company, especially with their Android devices. If any company leads the way for quicker full-product-line android upgrades, I'd expect it to be them.
Pure speculation and I'm maybe totally wrong, but I think the US Note will see ICS very soon.

thank you guys and gals
This is the downside of getting a newly launched device. I went thru it with the asus transformer 101. That was a little painful in the beginning, but the brilliant minds solved all the problems. It took about a month to really get rolling.
I picked up the Infuse about a year after launch and it was humming within 3 days cause all the hard work had already been done by those great minds in their forum.
The advantage with the Note is it's really great as a stock phone out of the box.
The smart guys and gals here want to advance just as much as we want them to succeed in making this Note the best it can be. So, Patience, and let them work. When they have something good they will be shouting it as loud as can be.
Support and good words go along way. We appreciate you guys more than you know! Thank you for all your efforts, and time away from your work, family, friends and hobbies to devote to this great piece of hardware.
this forum has gotten more action in the past week then the atrix did in the first 2 months. lol.
Damn you guys that are coming from other forums are spoiled!!! I remember waiting foreeevveer just to flash something on the atrix.. and then when CWM came out i was like "wtf is a CWM?" (atrix was my first android).
Stock rom on this phone is doing pretty well for me .Froze all the bloat, not using touchwiz -- and its like i dont even have anything from Samsung on there (besides the SPEN).
I can do without a rom until ICS comes out.. and that is going to do wonders for this device. ICS on the ATRIX is like a breath of fresh air, cant wait to see it on this beast.
Your right, I guess I was kinda spoiled coming from the inspire/desire HD forums. I never realized how long it takes to get things up and running. I apologize if I came off as being impatient. Again that was NOT my intention. I love these forums and appreciate the Devs hard work immensely.
On another "Note" (I know,I know, sorry) I was at best buy mobile last night where I know a couple sales reps and they mentioned that they hoped someone ported over Ics soon as the Samsung rep they spoke with at their store said Ics won't be coming our way for a good while. I myself take that with a grain of salt though. Do you think that a Samsung sales rep would even really know the Ics release schedule?

Its easy to see all the new users. It takes time. Plus why worry about a flash counter? Do any of you know of anyone or heard of anyone having issues with that? I havent and flashed my skyrocket alot before i turned it in. Seems to just be a way to make n00bs worry. And its working

Can't figure out all the freaking out over the flash counters at all. There are no known complications with this. Plus, are you just going to avoid all customization for good? Why not just get started now??

I guess I never looked too far into the flash counter. I had read a few threads about it, and people seemed to be convinced that AT&T would get fussy about it. I suppose it doesn't really mean much if you end up putting your phone back to stock and unrooting before returning it. If it wasn't for rooting and such, developers couldn't make apps and flash stuff to the phone, so I guess it doesn't really make sense at all why they would care if the device has been flashed with something else, especially if it is returned to a stock state for a return.

I mean I'm at least waiting for more than one ROM, when there are a good supply of awesome ROMs I'll jump right in.
Lol. It's not like all the Dev's aren't answering posts in their respective forums...

Cm10.1,Photon kernel

So as I understand it, the Photon has drivers issues which is why we dont have a port of for instant a droid bionic version of moto ICS, or moto jellybean. I am wondering what we need to get a kernel going. If this happened this would open up the possibility for doing webtop on a non stock rom.(Which I really would love cm 10.1 with ubuntop) I have been using linux for many years and am familiar with compiling and modifying kernels and packages I am just still new with android I came from the Epic 4G. I just would like to be pointed in the right direction or maybe someone who already makes kernels has attempted this and we could work together.
Thanks for your time.
You need source from Motorola and whatever company it was that Apple bought. You can try the Compendium thread for kernel links but as of now a new kernel is highly unlikely.
So then maybe we should look into writing our own? I mean if they can do it why can't we?

There's a thread over in the Atrix 4G forums where some people are working on a port from the Galaxy R kernel. You may want to follow that thread and offer your assistence there, because chances are that any progress that benefits the Atrix will benefit the Photon in the long run.

In theory that is sound, but the Atrix has a much newer kernel version than ours from the start (not sure how that happened with our device being more recent release). If you're planning to try, make sure that you have device protection or a good number of devices to work with....they've already hard bricked one or two from what I had seen.
What drivers are required, and I assume you mean for a 3.x kernel?

Unless you want to rev-eng a couple of parts of the kernel to make the GalaxyR kernel exaclty compatible with the Photon, you won't be able to use the stuff. Sorry.

maybe, jut maybe some day it will be leaked.
after the screwing Moto gave us he might as well post it. wtf are they gonna do? lock our damn phones?
My guess is it just never panned out and the guy didn't want to disappoint us. This was around the time of the Atrix leak, and that never amounted to anything, and a bunch of people got let down. It's my theory, which is far from concrete, that the leak included Photon files as well, that also never amounted to anything, but less was said here, so fewer people will be let down. I'm personally not worried. Come whatever may. My phone may not be able to do MMS or camcorder, or run Chrome or Swiftkey Flow, but I like it. It does the things I want it to. And it looks sexy as hell. I'd appreciate this mystery kernel or whatever, but I'm not gonna lose sleep if some mad scientist is holding out. Not saying that's what cybik is (I actually don't know much about him), just saying neither of the two extremes affect me much. And they shouldn't affect y'all either. If you're locked I'm sorry, that sucks, so is my brother, but you can run Holo Launcher/Locker and use either utter!, Maluuba, or Dragon Go! for voice commands/personal assistant, Notification Toggle for, well, the toggles, and Dolphin for your browser, and that puts you fairly close to Android 4. Motoblur can't keep a WiFi lock to save its life, but there are apps for that... I'm trying to test one on my wife's phone, but I'm not getting very good data from it. If you're unlocked, you have a lot of good choices as it is.
I may be an Atrix owner, but if the 2.6.39.4 kernel that is being dev'd for the Atrix is a success, couldn't you take the post-dev'd 2.6.39.4 kernel and port it to the Photon?

[Q] Any reason NOT to get the new OTA update if staying stock?

Just got the OTA update popup. Have looked around and it seems like user impressions are generally pretty favorable so far.
Aside from the update breaking root access (I'm staying stock, so not a deal-breaker for me), has anyone found any fatal flaws (app incompatibility, data loss/corruption, etc.) that might be a reason to NOT install the update?
Right now, there is a work around the b loader to gain root. If u take the update, you winn not be able to root as u know.
That might not mean much to you right now. But let's say you see something like the expanded mini menu, and you want it. Well, you won't be able to root and install Xposed.apk after taking the ota until an exploit is discovered.
Leave the update to the rubes who are less then passionate about the freedom we have or ota.
Btw, apps to sd is any able to move the apk to sd but not the working app and it's data.
See below the pick of the expanded mini menu...

I'd go for it if you don't care about root access. My wife installed it and it seems to be just fine... Maybe even a bit smoother than before but that's probably placebo

If you don't care about root then do it. I've heard it fixes a lot of the lag. That alone would make me do it.

Lag reduction wasn't thst noticeable but the improvement is there. Smearing is gone which is good. Notification bar has a new affect I like. Few new icons. I like it but not enough to take the OTA on my AT&T S4. Still running MDL on that one.

As much as I do want to see these improvements, I'm not willing to lose the ability to root and flash new roms. Here is to hoping a workaround is found soon.
Many thanks for all the responses. I did root my last phone and enjoyed the freedoms that brought. Would like to eventually root this phone, and I'm hoping that when I'm ready to do it there'll be a solution available for me, but if not it won't be the end of the world.
What I didn't want to do was the worst of both worlds: Apply the OTA and hate it, AND not be able to root.
Sounds like I won't end up in that spot, so I'll give it a shot.

Why devalue your phone for some stupid update?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Most people figure out by around the second grade that different people place different values on different things. One example of this is that there are about a zillion versions of Android and a zillion different versions of Android phones to use them on.
Right now, what I value is a stock S4. You value the phone differently. We can both have what we want. Isn't that nice?
You learned something today. Hooray!

I think its hilarious that people come to XDA to talk about a stock android device.... If you want a stock android device on Verizon, Verizon has a website dedicated to the S4 its various updates... The fact that your here asking root developers if you should go stock is frankly ridiculous. I'm sorry if you don't like the answers your being given but if you don't want or need ROOT, why are you here?

I am here because there are very knowledgable people here who push their devices to the limit. Many of these people also have friends or spouses with the same hardware but still in a stock configuration, and thus are in tune with the quirks in the stock software. Indeed, I got two helpful responses, so that alone justifies my asking the question here. Besides, there are plenty of questions on this general Q&A forum that have nothing to do with android development. "What case are you using?" "What extended battery is best?" Etc.
I rooted my last device and ran a variety of custom roms on it for almost two years. There were pros and cons to that experience. I expect that one day, if rooting my S4 is an option, I will want to do that, but I'm not ready to do it yet.
Is that really such a bizarre and alien situation that no one could possibly comprehend it? What is there about it that deserves derision or insult?

It's not bizarre or alien. Just an odd place to ask the question. The fact remains, you are on one of the websites that pioneered root access and spawned countless custom ROM's, Mods and Apps. You come to this website to discuss how you don't need root and are going stock and have no need of root & then you don't like the answers that the very same people who value root and push the limit of their phones give. If it were any other "development website" or chat channel you would be banned as a troll and no one would waste anymore time than they already have.
