[Q] Does anyone know a tutorial for mac users install ICS on SG9100? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I'm a mac (OSX 10.7.3) user and would like to install ICS on my SG9100. Does anyone knows a trustworthy tutorial that suites my needs?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the easiest way is to use a PC and update through Kies, although Kies can be a pain to use also. The other option is to root and flash an ICS ROM.
There are various ways to do this, all which are explained throughout the forum.

Hey,
first, there's Kies for Mac...
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
It suppose to provide firmware updating if your device has been intact (you got it without custom rom / rooted).
secondly,
there is Heimdall which is open source alternative that should be able to flash roms. though I must admit your easiest solution is PURE bootcamp (no parallels/virtualization) and ODIN if your not going the 100% samsung way.

I was going to suggest Kies for Mac but the mac version does not appear to support firmware upgrades, so I had to borrow a friends PC. I then went ahead and rooted and Flashed a vanilla ICS, but that's by the by.

[Q] Please point me in the right ROM direction

Hi all
I have a G2 touch that was stock and got the OTA update to 2.1 (t-mobile). But i decided I wanted root, not for developing just to get rid of a few system apps like stock and peep.
so i followed a few guides read lots of things and ended up having the generic htc rom 1.5 and rooted after making a gold card and downgrading. The problem was the OTA upgrade to 2.1 wouldnt install. (no groans from those that know what they are on about i'm new to this and thought it would upgrade )
as i like 2.1 more i ended up reflashing the stock 1.5 htc rom without having root and the OTA upgrade worked fine.
Now ive played with the generic htc 2.1 i actually prefer the t-mobile rom as it seems to have more in it like g-sensor calibration etc.
ive read several pages on here and other forums and now im just confused as to how to get a rooted version of the t-mobile 2.1 rom.
is it even possible?
if not and i do the full gold card and downgrade procedure again Which ROM will give me rooted 2.1 that is the closest to the t-mobile stock so i can remove the stock apps i want rid of?
sorry if it seems like an obvious question but i really dont get all this kernel, radio flashing, kitchens and all of that stuff i just want a simple rom i can put in and everything works like normal except i have root
thanks for your help

I'm not aware of any T-Mobile 2.1 ROMs, as everyone wants to rid their phone of branding normally.
But... here's the best method for you. Install your old official 1.5 ROM, and then do the OTA update to 2.1. Make sure you install your T-Mobile 1.5 to do this.
Then, go to http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096 and follow that guide to get a custom recovery image onto your phone. From there, you can use adb to access your handset as root, and add and remove stuff as you please. ADB info is in that guide, and a guide to removing apps is at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=862
HTH
PS. This won't give you everyday root, for things like root apps, since your ROM won't itself be rooted. But if you look up "Superuser.apk" and push that to /system/app (you'll learn about pushing etc with adb or googling 'adb push'), along with the su binary, you can give yourself basic root, though it won't be perfect.
If anyone else wants to help out, what you'll need is the 2 superuser files i mentioned, and a modified boot image that has the changed hero.prop (i think it's called that), with ro.secure set to 0 in the ramdisk.
But don't worry about this later stuff unless you need to.
Hi thanks very much for the help
i get the idea right up until the basic root bit, so think i will get that far .....after that you lost me
will i be able to use apps for rooted devices if i just get the basic root working?

Should be able to. Give it a go That last bit wasn't intended for you, more for anyone who tries this in future and wants adb root access.
i've managed to hit another problem....
i'm trying to install the adb drivers and having trouble. i have the normal usb drivers installed and have downloaded the drivers from villanrom (it wont let me post the link sorry)
but when i tell it to install them i get a window pop up saying the driver contains no information for my device.
ive uninstalled the my htc drivers and tried again but i never get an adb device appear.
am i missing something obvious?
im using windows xp and have the hero set to pc sync when connected.
thanks

Hmm OK. I know the issue. Find the driver folder, and use this file as the ini file

I had to hack the file to make it recognise the hero

[Q] ROMs with secondary bootloader . . .

Basically my dilema is this. I run Mac OSX exclusively at home, but I am able to use a friend's computer to flash via ODIN if neccessary. Its a pain, however. I'd like to use Heimdall with new frontend, but a requirement for heimdall on OSX is that you have previously installed a secondary bootloader.
My question is, what ROM or ROMs can I flash with ODIN to aquire the secondary bootloader and not have to bother my friends with my sick ROM fettish anymore?
(Currently soft-bricked off of Onyx 4.2UFL trying to flash JK6)
Not sure exactly what you are talking about... but i think the answer you are looking for is Rom Manager. There are 2 versions Free & Donate/Paid both are available in the market, so once you fix your soft brick find it and install it. The only thing you will need a computer for at that point is to copy the ROM to the internal SD card.
ROM manager is fine unless you need to recover from a brick. Its not much good if you do. I'd like to use Heimdall for OSX, but it requires a secondary bootloader. On the I9000 you can get it from a JPA ROM. I don't know which ROMs have this on the Vibrant.

[Q] regarding the firmware

hi there. these are the firmware version of my phone
PDA: I9100XWFK1
PHONE: I9100DXKF1
CSC: I9100OLBKE5
do i need to update anything before rooting? or i could root my phone straight away?
sorry if this has been asked before
thanks in advance
You can root now, or root after updating. You could also just install a pre-rooted rom like VillainRom or Lightning Rom. I recommend the 1st, it's built on android 2.3.4, which has a lot better battery life.
1 question. i have a pc with 64 window 7. when i try to open the Odin, it wont open and it shows some sort of korean words. any idea how to solve it?
Try rightclicking the exe file, go to the last tab where you can change compatibility mode and set it it something else. I don't know if ODIN supports x64.
i tried all possible options but the error is still there. any other solution?
First things first, have you installed KIES? This is used for the correct usb drivers. Using google I see people can easily run it on x64.. Try Heimdall. It's an alternative to ODIN.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/heimdall-available-for-galaxy-s-2/
ok. thanks. another question. i rooted using SuperOneClick. and now i would like to install a new rom. i read about using CMW and according to the thread i should have the app however i do not. how could i install a new rom?

[Q] This should be very simple for you techies. Help appreciated :)

Well it's regarding rooting.
I heard it opens up a world of opportunity with your smartphone, and some apps I really want are only available vain rooted phones. I have the Samsung galaxy s3 international version. It was originally from Australia if that matters at all. It is on 4.0.4. Anyways, being a noob to android more or less, and being a bit apprehensive (because I have no warranty and I cannot obtain another phone easily) I was wondering basically how risky it is to brick your phone in a) the process of rooting your phone. Is it common? If it does get bricked is it reversable by a restore or simply gone? Also after rooting, is there any upkeep or management I need to do to make sure my rooted phone does not screw up? And lastly. What is the safest and easiest way to root the international quad core gs3 on ics. Thank you to everyone for your time

Well, most you could pick up be reading a bit, everything is already explained around here but since i was in your shoes very recently:
- there's always a risk. You need to be aware of that. That said, most cases that actually go wrong it's usually user's fault who failed to follow instructions closely. So read them. And read some more. And then read again just to make sure. And then i'd read again.
I used this very recent method from chainfire (salute and donate to the man if you like and can, he deserves it) to root my 4.0.4 international GT-I9300 S3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Triangled away next and everything worked like a charm. This preserves everything as stock as possible just adding root to your phone.
- from what i can tell, as long as you don't do anything that messes with the bootloader, you can always recover from a procedure gone wrong. Just disconnect, remove battery, insert and try again. Rebooting the computer or changing usb ports usually helps too (on odin).
- after rooting successfully, the very first thing you should do is backup your /efs folder. This is easy, just pick up root explorer or some other file manager that allows exploring you root (/), go up in your folders until you get to / look for the efs folder and just copy it (NOT MOVE) elsewhere (sd card, external sd, your computer preferably, whatever, just have that safe). This will come in handy in case you lose your imei at some point. Just restore this folder's contents and you're good to go. If that happens and you don't have a backup, it's a f'ing pain you can do well without.
- anything else root related is just common sense. Since you have the potential to screw up your entire phone with root permissions (this is why you don't have them in the first place), if an app pops up asking for root permissions, be sure what it is before allowing. If you're not sure, you can always deny first and allow later in the superuser app.
- you can also look into backing up with nandroid. You can think of this as an image of your entire phone. With this you can restore your phone to the same state it was when you did it. Useful when something went wrong and your phone doesn't boot anymore or you just wanted to try new roms with the option of coming back to what you had before. Not sure how you do it on the S3 still, but it usually requires a modified recovery like CWM. The method to root above doesn't install one though, it preserves what you had. Check this instead if you're interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
Cheers dude, i'm sure everything will go well for you too.
Chance of a brick about .0001 % rising to 100% for those that are to lazy to read follow instructions .

Thankyou very much to everyone who has read and replied to this. 3 more minor questions. Is there a way to first update my phone to jellybean 4.1 via Odin or something like that? Or is this possible after root, because I don't want to stay on ics. Also what exactly happens if I update while rooted. Does it wipe or unroot my phone or the like? Also should my phone be in use debugging, and lastly what does it mean to unlock my bootloaders? That was more than 3 questions sorry thanks again

1) You don't need to root to update to JB.
Just download any ROM you want from http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300 (I recommend the UK unbranded ROM, BTU) then use Odin3 to flash it to your devices. Search the forums for specific instructions on this procedure. I'll just tell that it takes no more than 2-3 minutes.
2) If you're going to root, I suggest you do it beforehand, by flashing a kernel like Siyah (in ICS), and then proceed to flashing the stock JB ROM, HOWEVER, instead of using Odin3, you will use MobileOdion (available from Play Store), because that way you'll have a fully rooted and stock device.
3) Using step 2 above, it will not wipe not unroot your phone. It is safe and retains all your settings. That is the beauty of MobileOdin. There is a free version.
If you root and THEN install via Odin (PC), then you'll lose root, but not your settings.
In either case, you only wipe the device IF YOU WANT TO.
So, the best option is to:
a) Install SiyahKernel using Odin3 (PC)
b) Download the JB BTU ROM from http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300
c) Extract the .md5 from the ZIP file and move it to the device's ext. sd card
d) Install MobileOdin in the device
e) Use MobileOdin to flash the .md5 you moved to it in step (c)
f) install TriangleAway (download from XDA) and run it to reset binary counter (which got incremented in step [a] )
Results: rooted, JB, stock, all settins retained, no binary counter increment
Simonetti2011 I have been searching the internet here in New Zealand and that has been the best answer I have found so far!
I do have a slight question thought. I live in New Zealand and have the GT-I9300T model of the GS3 and I'm wanting to install the international unbranded rom for that I can get updates faster (here in NZ it takes months and months to get updates)
I downloaded the International UK unbranded firmware 4.0.4 and was going to flash that rom onto my phone then upgrade to jelly bean via kies but have since relised I should just download the jellybean UK firmware straight away. Do you by any chance havea link to the firmware that I would need, I noticed there were a few different versions.
Also about the CSC, would I need to do any changes?
Many many thanks in advance, Sorry for hijacking this thread, just figured I was on the same pages as the OP

Thanks!
The 9300T and the 9300 are NOT the same device, therefore they use different firmware (ROM). The ROMs for the 9300T are here: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300T
I don't think there is a 9300T ROM for the UK, since the model released there is the 9300 (non-T).
It seems that either Samsung-updates hasn't indexed any ROMs for your model or they haven't been released.
About CSC: just don't worry about it... download and flash any ROM you want for your specific model and don't worry. If you don't like it, just download and flash another one.
Thanks heaps for that!
I actually just tried the UK unbranded rom that was for the i9300 on my i9300T and suprisingly everything seems to work ok so far (phone calls, txting, 3g etc)
Thankyou to everyone!
Thank you for your responses to my post regarding rooting my s3. They were very helpful. i succesfully rooted via chainfire cf auto root for the I9300 model without problem. Just one last question, I have been searching around a bit and some people are saying that flashing the jellybean firmware via odin, is not a perfect copy.. i mean some say they have been experiencing very minor problems here and there. So, if i update to the uk firmware on jelly bean via odin or mobile odin, and i experience some problems, can i still get the official ota update or jellybean 4.1 via kies when it is released? Thanks again for your help. Im pretty new to this android stuff

Easiest way to go back to stock ROM?

Im currently on Lineage ROM, and i got a new phone so i need to flash the stock ROM on this K20 Plus, what would be the easiest way to do it? MetroPCs model.
I know you may have long since found the answer, but for others who may be curious simply search for the official LG software suite PC program and install it. You will need the phone device drivers. There is a thread here in the xda K20 plus ROMs and development forum with links to the necessary files and some basic guides. You'll also need to download the official stock image from the lg-firmwares.com or any such similar host sites. Although I believe the official and recent version of the LG backup/restore suite can download the image file automatically but I may be wrong. The crucial thing is to install all the necessary drivers on your PC and ensure the phone can be recognized on it. I haven't kept up with any of the latest releases to know if maybe the suite does the downloading and drivers setup with ease. But more or less the whole stock reflash process is the same and not difficult.
