Inverted Google Apps - TouchPad Themes and Apps

My thanks to Team ICEMods for these. http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/top...S-(4-22-contacts-and-mms-updated)#entry381488
I take absolutely no credit for these, just thought I'd pass them along to my fellow Touchpad owners running ICS (Touchpadians, TP users, Tenderloins? ). The above linked thread provides inverted (white text/black background) versions of most of the popular Google Apps such as Gmail and Calendar. They were posted in a Galaxy Nexus forum but appear to work well for other devices including ours. There are other inverted sets out there but these appear to be the most up-to-date plus I had dark text problems with the some of them.
If your like me, you hate how bright the normal apps are on a 10" screen in a dark room, especially if you are at a presentation or class. Now I can check things without distracting those around me, plus it is easier on my eyes and hopefully my battery life. You can pick and choose those you want. I'm currently using inverted Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, Voice & Google+, and running the latest Official CM9 Nightly from April 30th, 2012.
Just read the first two posts carefully, and as always I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY if you brick or damage your device. Enjoy.

Just FYI, LCD screens do not work this way. OLED screens save juice with a dark theme, because there each subpixel lights up individually to create colour (which also gives them almost perfect black levels). On an LCD screen you have one big white backlight and the pixel array filters it selectively - so adjusting overall backlight brightness affects power usage but it doesn't matter if the pixels are white or black.
Black themes are nice and easier on the eyes though

I wondered if that was the case but wasn't sure. That's why I said "hopefully". I have a Nexus S with a super AMOLED screen and got used to the idea of black=less drain. Thanks.

It apparently got merged into Black Ice thread. Good news though, the OP, travp624, has created a new updated thread to replace it.

SwiftKey qHD problems

Hey all,
Searched the forums for this and found a bit of discussion, but not a fix.
I know some people are using swiftkey x and not having display problems, but for me it's borked, no matter what i do. I've tried clearing app data, removing and reinstalling etc - nothing seems to work. Settings pages occupy about 2/3 of the screen real estate, centered horizontally and stuck to the top of the screen vertically, and when the keyboard is in use, it takes up 80% of the screen but mostly with black empty space. For this latter reason, it's pretty much unusable.
My carrier is Orange UK, but my handset is a retail/SIM unlocked stock ROM. It is up to date with OTA updates.
Is there a fix for this? Or am i screwed?
Thanks all, and apologies if this question has already been answered - i did try in earnest to find it.
Sorry but need to ask... Where did you get it from?
I got mine from the Market and all is good and dandy.
Worth every penny I must add.

must agree, no problems at all........
I'm using the betas and havent seen such a problem, be it on stock, cm7 or customized blur roms. Maybe try spare parts and disable that legacy app fix.

No worries The market just like you. In fact i've been a SwiftKey customer for a long long time. My old SwiftKey licence seemed to transfer over to SwiftKey X when it was formally released. I did have the X beta, and at first it was fine, then after one particular update it started with this screen problem, and has been that way ever since, even after the official first release.

This sounds hopeful! I haven't heard of spare parts but im assuming its some sort of tweaking program? I can use it to disable some sort of legacy fix for older, none qHD apps? is that right?
EDIT: I installed spare parts but just have the following options on a settings-style screen:
battery history
battery information
usage stats
window anims
transition anims
fancy input anims
fancy rotation anim
end button behavior
haptic feedback
compatibility mode
wifi sleep policy
activity/process management
brightness mode
font size
show compass in maps
Only one which looks promising is compatibility mode?
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for that crnkoj - got it working! For all who're reading this thread and want to know: use spare parts to disable compatibility mode!
Sure, np. And ye, i meant compatibility fix just didn't remember the correct name.

[Q] How many of you are using Live Wallpapers?

I really want to use them because they are so cool, but I tried a lightning one and it just seemed to move a little laggy. Swiping, opening things, you could tell slightly it was a little slower. Not sure how drastic battery life is cut short though.
Anyone use them, or just use their own custom wallpapers? Or any other thoughts on Live Wallpapers in general?
I use them every now n then. I experience no lag at all with them on. it might just be that particular wallpaper not optimized for tablet or ICS. plus not too many out there that's HD. I rather use a highbdefinition wallpaper that showcases the Primes great display and colors. There are some really good live wallpapers out there though. They don't really drain the battery like people like to assume. Some are made better than others.
Some great ones are; Digital Hive(free), SunRise(free), Bubbles, Christmas HD, Season Zen(free), and Touch Ripples(free). Those all work n look great on the Prime with no lag. All this live wallpaper talk makes me wanna apply one now..lol
I've been using black hole that came with ICS. It works great. I use the ones that came with the system because their made for ICS. Doesnt effect the speed or scrolling.
I have been using the water/whale paper pre loaded. Works fine while indicating the battery level. Haven't noticed any lag or other issues.
.
I try them on occasion too, and then switch away when bored to something like Windows Vista Wallpapers (and Win7, the dramatic Landscape stuff) They are all out there, modified for the Primes resolution
I just tried Black hole because of the other post, and I like it much more than I thought I would. We will see, by end of day I will be looking for something else, LOL!
Anyone try the "semi-live" Asus "Day Scene"? Changes with time of day, so it's really just 4-5 static WP's. Nice, but the "dusk " one s horrible. Looks like someone peed on the landscape, LOL!
Installed the Skyrim live wallpaper, looks and feels pretty smooth.
Guess you have to like the game though.
Digital Hive is awesome...When you're not doing anything on the desktop, it's pretty passive, but during touch actions, it's cool as hell.

I have never had it animated without a touch action...it wigs out when you first apply the wallpaper; every hex spins until you touch each of them.

Well, it doesn't seem to animate at all in ICS. Just a static image.
That's how the free one works for me. The paid version worked ok but not enough for me to keep it so I got a refund

SOLVED Screen brightness on ICS compared to Gingerbread

I have been using the same rom since the day I received my Galaxy Note so I am used to it by now since I have been using it for over four months. I even flashed a couple other Gingerbread roms which were nice but I came back to the Solaris Prime rom qickly after flashing. After waiting since the first ICS leak I got bored and flased a custom ICS rom with the intention of playing with it for a while then flashing back to Gingerbread. The screen was bright on every Gingerbread rom I flashed, but on the ICS rom I flashed it was nowhere near as bright. I always use full brightness and never use auto adjust which is what I set it to on the ICS rom. This is the ICS rom I tried out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686320 Now my question is, has anyone else noticed this or is it maybe only a problem with this rom? Are ICS roms not as bright as Gingerbread roms cause I need the screen to be very bright? I noticed the brightness was very dim compared to Gingerbread roms I have used within five seconds of setting the brightness to full and turning off auto adjust. If all the ICS roms are like this I think I will stay with Gingerbread cause this is a deal breaker for me.
EDIT: I figured it out. It is the Auto Adjust Screen Power setting, when checked the screen becomes dim when unchecked the screen is vived and bright. I guess this setting is not in all roms.
Hard to compare since I can only load one ROM at a time. But I never noticed the difference in brightness. I leave mine turned up also as I am frequently outside with my work and play. The 15 toggle mod is not somehow overiding your brightness setting in ICS?
I believe I have noticed the same issue. I thought maybe it was just me, but apparently I am not the only one. I am rooted and running BlackStar rom right now, and I can compare it side by side with my girlfriends stock unrooted note and hers seems noticeably brighter. But even that I chalked up to her not having a screen protector and me having one. But I wouldn't think the screen protector would inhibit the brightness much if at all.
I also have gotten to the point of using full brightness, becuase auto brightness is unusable at times, even indoors.
Are we the only 2? LOL. I have noticed another issue with the backlight today. The screen seemed dim, but every once in a while would get bright for like half a second then go back to dim. I have it set to full brightness, but I tried covering the sensor, or at least what I think is the sensor(gonna have to google that) and it didn't change anything.

Well did you compare when you both stock? Not every screen is created equally. I've seen identical phones next to each other and both have completely different temperatures on the screen (one bluish and one yellowish).

This is not anything that I needed to compare. It was noticable and since it happened I have read about other devices having the same issue after upgrading to ICS. It seem like the only devices this happens with are Samsung devices cause every device I found with this issue was a Samsung device. Not sure if they are putting a limit on brightness cause I know a lot of people said the contrast was too high on the Note but there is clearly something making the screen look washed out with ICS. I want my screen to be bright like it is capable of. I want my whites to be white like they are on Gingerbread.

That makes no sense. I need a dev to tell me they limit the brightness we can use before I would beleive that. And not only that the problem seems to be happening on official firmware upgrades not just custom roms. I do not think its a coincidence that all the devices I have found this problem happening on after updating to ICS were Samsung devices.
I recreated the problem so people can see it happening on their devices. Try this
1: Turn full brightness on and turn off auto adjust.
2: Open the default browser, and Gmail and leave them running.
3: Now go to home and long press the home button and the app icons will popup. Pay attention to Gmail and the browser, and you will notice the task manager icons are much brighter than the apps.
4: Without taking your eyes off the task icons open the browser and you will notice it gets dimmer then the task icons.
5: Now hit the menu button and when it pops up the browser will get brighter. Hit it again it will get dimmer.
6: Now hit the tab button and you will also see the tab icon is much brighter than the app itself.
I have noticed the apps that have the black menu popup get lighter and darker when you push the menu button but the ones with the white menu popup stay the same when you push the menu button. The weird thing is it seems like the system menus, app menus and the launcher are all as bright as they should be its just the actual apps that are washed out. I have only tried two AOKP roms so maybe this is a problem with those roms but it is very noticeable especially on apps that have white backgrounds. I cannot figure out why the whole system is bright til I open an app then the app gets dimmer then the rest of the system.
Lol

This ICS rom I'm using (FJ ucle2#6...is not "darker" per sey .
I'm leaning more toward darker theme features perhaps ?
But I prefer the dark background popups with white letters etc. And I suppose it's possible that the ICS leaks are reduced to improve battery life ?
I honestly can't say, but I do know that my stock GB was like looking into the sun at night for me.
My eyes don't do bright very well ....g
I have the same problem!!!
I use my Galaxy Note (ATT) at full brightness and I have had it for 4 months. Got bored and decided to root it yesterday and installed an ICS rom. The screens were noticeably darker even at full brightness. It was depressing me and I wanted to go back to Gingerbread, but the MDSUM of my nand backup was incorrect for some reason, so I have not been able to do that. Looking around now for some Gingerbread roms to flash today!!!

Just an FYI, - I was downloading another rom from the same team as the one you recommended when I saw your update, so I went ahead and flashed the one I already downloaded. Took me back to 2.3.6, but it did NOT fix my screen brightness issue. I therefore went ahead and took my phone completely back to stock, unrooted and it's all good now.

Thats the rom I use and its super bright. Try it out I promise you will like it.
just pointing out - I agree about the brightness thing.
specially so in my favorite new rom, the latest from team perfection (the one released at the end of june 2012). it's an amazing rom, but it is quite dramatically dimmer in autobrightness modes than GB roms and is in fact so fim in autobrightness modes that I can't see it very well with my old eyes. I had no problem with other roms, and the stock gb rom is MUCH bright in auto mode.
then I take it out of autobrightness and go outside in the sun. it's almost unreadable in the sun outdoors (walking around). reverted to stock nandroid in autobrightness mode - I can read it ok in the sun. reverted to nandroid of the new ics rom. crank the brightness, can't read it, autobrightness is no brighter (maybe even dimmer) in the sun.
this isn't acceptible - the display on the note is amazing, why take away one of the best features of the note?
I cant' even use the phone in the sun when walking now.
I hope someone can find a way to change the brightness levels after the fact - that would be a really helpful tweak for those of us who can easily tell the difference (between readable and unreadable) in our roms.
I've looked through build.prop files but can't see anything there obviously related to screen brightness, so it must be something in teh roms or kernels.
cheers

I mentioned this on one if the rom threads and they got mad for some reason. They acted like I was making the issue up. I do not know how I noticed the ICS roms are not as bright as the Gingerbread roms but not many others have noticed. It is insanely evident that the ICS roms do not match up in brightness when compared to Gingerbread. I have also searched the web about the issue and all the devices with this problem are made by Samsung. The big bright screen should not suffer with an upgrade. I want my screen to be just as bright on ICS as it is on Gingerbread. With this issue ICS is a big turn off for me. I am beginning to think that all the reports of over saturation on the screen of newer Samsung devices have forced Samsung to put something in the newer ICS software to control the problem that some had with the saturation being too bright. I really hope someone else notices so it can be taken seriously and someone will give it some attention and fix it.
cool, yea I read that... LoL, I felt bad for you.
I think I may have found the possible culprit, if devs are doing this on purpose at least.

I'll look at this tomorrow and see if I can brighten up my new favorite rom, team perfection (the june 28th or whatever latest rc1 version is).
PS: I killed my flash of that rom by accident this afternoon and now am reinstalling the whole damned thing and all of my apps again. all in an effort to brighten up the display. {stupid}

Thoughts on ICS OTA

Does anyone else feel like the ICS OTA was just kind of thrown together and not built very well? To me, nothing seems to be themed consistently and I feel as though ICS/Sense doesn't fit very well together. In some cases, I'll get menus with the black and blue ICS theme and then other times I'll get the Sense white and green menus. Other than having ICS (which is awesome) I don't think HTC put much time into this update. What do you guys think?

Blame verizon all you want for the bad timing of the update, but the performance of ICS is 100% HTC's fault. No doubt about it
Problem is that HTC is mostly green and they want to stay green except Android is turning blue. I guess HTC needs to learn how to theme? Oh and I blame Verizon for everything as well, what a bunch of blowers..
It's kinda sh*tty but it doesn't bother most of us since we're on custom roms that are themed. Source is the only thing I care about.

I don't care much for the looks but that is not the problem. It is much slower the gb. The browser does not work well for flash videos. It also does not work when searching pictures with Google. I was annoyed to find out on a trip this weekend that the navigation voice does not have its own volume and if you play music at the same time, you can barely hear the voice. I had to mute my music when there was a lot of directions coming up.
It is an improvement for me
I am completely stock. I don't like to root until Verizon wont cover the phone any longer. But I was getting close though because of the data drop issues. ICS is not the solution to everything, but it made my phone able to work like I expect. I don't know if I blame HTC, Verizon or the tooth fairy. I know that they all should have been bothered by the number of people running stock that were dealing with not being able to us the internet as a general rule that is a core function of a smart phone, imho.
For those of you who are developing roms, thank you. I will root this phone, probably around Christmas. Thanks for keeping a variety around. :good:

Honestly I am ok with most stuff on it. The only major issue I am having is battery drain. I am hoping after I reset it will be fixed. But it did fix the 4g issues I was having. The browser hasn't been slower for me but I haven't tried videos on it yet. I am annoyed handsent isn't syncing the pics but since the address book is it sounds like a handcent problem. Overall I am happy with it. It's nice I can disable the bloatware and I like how ICS is. I like the sense its not much difference then GB, 4.0 would be nice but at least my phone is working now.

Nice! Glad to hear that you're happy with your phone and the update :good:. If you're having battery issues, try reducing the frequency of data synchs etc. Lower screen brightness for general use etc. Could also try a battery calibration. Good luck!

I kept my sync frequencies, and screen brightness the same so I could compare battery efficiency between GB and ICS. ICS is about 50% worse, in my experience. My extended battery lasts 1 day 9 hours to 0% battery, where it used to last a full 2. It's horrendous. If I reduced sync times and brightness, etc. on GB I would be approaching or exceeding the 3 day mark. Users shouldn't have to do all that just to hit 2 days on ICS. I know some users do not experience these battery issues (my wife and coworker do not), so I have to assume it's an actual defect in my handset.
I agree with OP. Nothing seemed themes consistently at all. I couldn't stand bouncing back and force between ICS and Sense themes, which were entirely different (and arguably clashing).
I spent plenty of time waiting for the OTA, and when it finally came and flashed a new ROM that night.
Screen brightness messes up after using camera (mine stays at full brightness until I lock and unlock again), landscape keyboard is severely ****ed (not so much the keyboard but the displayed content above it where my cursor is), and the themes a little but they don't bother me at all. Ive always had that auto brightness problem with the camera even on the droid incredible so its not new to me but i did notice that if you try a new theme some parts of HTC's green theme turn into your color of theme. But not always.
I agree with everything said pretty much accept battery life. Mines still good even on these stock kernals.
Moral of the story... Nexus only from now on lol. The themeing issues and old sense and old version of ICS when we finally get the update is annoying to me. Why didn't they just release the source and not push an outdated update lol.

Yeah I turned on the blue skin theme and it comes up with some blue and some green. Both look fine so I don't complain but the landscape keyboard thing is super annoying. Anyone have that problem or am I the minority?

[Q] Do you like the status bar? How about Amoled?

I was looking at my friends GS3(yeah, the overated phone), and I noticed that the status bar looks better. Do you like the HTC status bar, or would you like it looking like the S3's? I like the S3's status bar, but i'm not gonna switch to it since I like HTC better. I also noticed how neon the Amoled screen is. I like the one on the DNA too. I also think HTC can make the app launcher background a little more transparent and add "holo theme" features to Sense.
I do like the quick settings on the GS3 pull down bar. Maybe it just "seems" like a time-saver but I still like it. Other than that I like the DNA's features better.
The reason i got the dna was cause i hate SAMOLED screens with a passion. Take that for what its worth

Yeah coming from a samsung phone I hated it. I hate touch wiz and I hate SAMOLED the brightness all the way down was always still way too bright and my battery would never last as long as I wanted it to. This is my first HTC phone and I am never going back to samsung.

I had a samsung continuum. Verizon planed on the device being big because it's the only phone that has 2 screens. At the time when I bought it android 2.2 had just been released and the rep told me that the phone would be receiving the update soon. This was at the end of 2010 in February 2012 we finally received the froyo update. The device is still on froyo and only has a leak for gb. The battery life was so bad that I had to get an extended battery it would die when I didn't even use it that much. It was so slow performing a simple task like texting took forever. I had to do a battery pull multiple times a day. The phone angered me so much it was a pain to use everyday. However because it was so bad this led me to the introduction of rooting and flashing. Although there was very little development for the phone I flashed a bunch of stuff and was able to get the phone to a solid state where I was able to use it and enjoy it. It's a shame that the phone never got the attention it deserved because it did have the potential to be great. But samsung and verizon could not come to terms and release updates and fix bugs in a timely manner. It was more of a love hate relationship. Only really good thing about the phone was hard bricking it was nearly impossible. Like I said some days I loved it and some days I hated it and wanted to chuck it at a wall. But after having a bad experience like that I'm never going back to them. All my android devices have now been Motorola, from Google, and HTC. I have to say after making a leap that was so drastic to this phone it was quite enjoyable. On the continuum I had a crappy processor and about 300mb of ram so everything was slow. The continuum forms aren't getting very much activity now a days but the people there are really helpful so the community was small and very friendly. Very few people still run the phone as their daily driver. I also really like HTC sense compared to touch wiz. But after an experience like that I'm done with samsung their customer support also really sucks.

Sense's lack of quick settings in the notification drop down is annoying (at least Sense 4+ has a link to the settings menu now) but with any good ROM it'll add it back (like ViperDNA for example). The Super LCD 3 screen on the DNA is much much better than the OLED screen on the S3. Not only is the resolution higher, but I think it recreates color better. Also, while some Droid DNAs have had reports of small blue splotches on the screen (my original had one) overall the screens seem to be flawless. The S3s had widespread reports of blotches of light or dark which is systemic to OLED screens.
