Which version of the I717 should I get? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

First off, it's great to see so many familiar faces here in the Note section. I am wanting to upgrade from my Telus Desire HD to a Samsung Note. I am on ATT here in the USA, although I prefer non-ATT phones for personal reasons. I prefer rooted unbranded stock ROMs. Are there any advantages or disadvantages between the Telus, Rogers, and Bell versions? If my understanding is correct, the Bell version comes unbranded and sim unlocked? Any advice before I take the plunge?

The Bell version is full of bloatware and sim-locked. I don't think there's any difference between each version of the device exept maybe the bloatwares and the modem.

Thanks for the reply. I have been doing some heavy searching and have been getting mixed results. One person says Bell has no carrier branding and another claims Telus while another claims Rogers. I would like to keep the options available on the Canadian ROM versions. I don't see any rooted unbranded Canadian carrier ROMs on XDA and would like the easiest approach while I get used to Samsung.

DaGr8 is a well know developers on the GNote and he owns the i717R (Rogers). As far as I know, right now he's working on a i717 (AT&T) leak of ics with this device and I also flashed the leak without any trouble. Every LTE Galaxy Note seems to share the same specs, so don't worry about that.
I use my i717R on Fido (Rogers sub-brand) and I didn't had to sim-unlock it even if Fido don't sell this phone. Still, I've been told that the phone is still locked to Rogers network.
Also Rogers and AT&T share nearly the same network technologies since the beginning, yes Rogers just like AT&T were the first to have the iPhone in Canada. That's something to concider.

Hi Agoattamer. I know you from the Inspire\HD threads. I too am making the change to Note. I was simply planning on getting the ATT version just because it was the cheapest way to go. Now your post is making me wonder if I should consider other options. I can't really offer a lot of info to answer your question of which way to go. Just wanted to say hi. (We are both fellow Pennsylvanians, too.)
Rooted is easy, as I am sure you know.
Unbranded, stock ROMs is also not an issue. There are several ROMs already in the Dev thread and more are coming all the time. Most, if not all, seem to be ICS so I hope that is to your liking.
As of now unlocking is going to cost you. Only the paid services option is available, so far. I saw an option that unlocks other Samsung phones but so far I haven't been able to get anyone to try it for me so it is one of the things I plan to do once I get my new Note.

Get the AT&T version
Get the AT&T version I'm trying to get WildChild to this also but he really likrs HTC

Don't want the ATT version.
Actually we are from the same town kimtyson. I don't want to give up my dumbphone unlimited plan. Not sure if we will get LTE here in the next 2 years. And the money I will save by paying $10 a month for trully unlimited internet will overshadow the around $500 price tag.nd won't be stuck in a 2 year contract in case something great does come up. I am guessing I can get any of the three to suit my needs.
Maybe I am blind but I haven't seen any stock unbranded and bloatfree ROMs available. Do they exist?

Ordered a Roger's version. Can't wait to play with it.

[Q] Questions for USA buyers

What CSCs are you generally getting from resellers? Latest European?
Anyone buy from NewEgg? (30 day exchange for issue laden device)
What are the pitfalls if any with using International Versions on ATT. I can see the advantages.
Flashing methods seem to be the same from what I am reading. Even A TiBu restore may work from a saved folder from the Captivate. Have not read of any differences there in apps or TiBu.
VPN settings work?
Been looking to get this handset but not sure about about a few processes. I am guessing MobileTech can unbrick one of these should I have an issue as they did one of my Captivates. I have not read of any US repair support expected.
USA Buyer
I have a SGII here in US, bought from onthegosolutions.com, works well on AT&T sim card. No setup issues, nothing to complain about but the problems with the native email app and activesync exchange server, that is supposed to be fixed in KE7 if I can ever get it.
The phone is the standard EU version XWKE2
I got mine from Amazon and the CSC was from Chile. Flashed the generic European ROM soon after to update the build to KE7. Everything has been working fine before and after flashing and rooting.
THanks for the replies. Being a "noob" to non branded Android Galaxy (always bought Nokia before and had to set up VPN was the only difference.
The two branded Captivates which were complete turds initially have been very nicely polished by developers. (hence my support of donations to them and this site.) I believe in supporting the helpful developers with my wallet for ROMS and paid Apps.
I don't use either Exchange or the stock Email app. I like Gmail and K9. I will root for TiBi and root Explorer. Probably run Cog at first since DG was a force on the SGS I and still is. When I get comfortable with the flashing processes I will try other ROMs
I guess most processes are similar to the S1. I did notice two rooting methods. I even read somewhere SuperOneclick may work.
OF hundreds of flashes I bricked once (recently) but $50 late MobileTech and the JTAG had me like new. Small price to pay to save a few hundred dollar phone. IM guessing Josh cna do the same with the SGS II.
Does anyone know when it will be available for AT&T?
I bought mine from New Egg and received it Thursday and I must say it is a great phone. Mine came with KE2. I just flashed Cognition on it a couple of hours ago and its even smoother and faster.
I read on Android Central the other day that Samsung was having issues with the carriers in the US on getting them to pick up this phone. I don't know why since its an awesome phone and they already have phones on all the major carriers. I'm glad I bought it outright instead of waiting for ATT to officially carry it.

The source of all those stories was a Korean writer with no facts talking out of his ass. A dev just found AT&T LTE code in the 2.3.4 leak along with PNG logos unique to their network.
Here's a link to the story that started it all. You judge if its credible.

Yeah IM over Carrier branded handsets. I was glad ATT never carried the N82/N95/N97 Nokias...... I could not care if ATT never gets the SGS 2. Probably get an SGS 3 instead to compete with ifad 5
Bought one here from the Market place with KE7....Hasn't arrived yet.

[Q] Full Retail Price + Unlock vs. Intl.

Hello Everyone, I'm new here to the forums, and I have a quick question that I haven't seen directly answered in the forums since the release of the Galaxy S3.
My mom is ending our 5-line plan with Verizon next month, and I believe 3 of the 5 lines will be switching to Straight Talk with prepaid monthly plans.
I was looking into getting an unlocked S3 with a plan like this, say T-Mobile, AT&T, or Straight Talk.
How should I go about doing this?
My options, I believe, would be :
Buy S3 International Version (Unlocked) and then get a SIM card with StraightTalk or similar. How will my DATA coverage be? I don't really need speeds that fast.
Buy S3 US Carrier Version for full price, pay to have it unlocked, and then get a SIM card from AT&T/T-Mobile. If I get the AT&T version and get it unlocked, will 4G LTE work, but again that's not my main priority.
I just want the cheapest and best way to get the best version of the phone to work decently with a prepaid monthly plan like Straight Talk/T-Mobile or similar.
Thanks a million!
Cheapest way would to be getting one from AT&T for 549.99 or 599.99 compared to the 650+ of the int SGS3. If you get Straight Talk (ST), you don't need to get the AT&T unlocked since they have SIMs for either TMO or AT&T.
The reason I suggested ATT is because I don't know what TMO plans to charge.
I don't believe ST supports LTE but I could be wrong but you should be able to get 3G if using the ATT w/ ST. People with ST probably can answer better than I could.
I realize your main interest is the cheapest price, but a few things to keep in mind:
-Buying from a North American carrier will mean you're getting a dual-core, as opposed to the international quad-core
-Software updates and third-party ROM options are almost always worse with the carrier version

I agree with your first comment but disagree with your 3rd Party ROMs almost always worst comment. While there might be not as many as Int version in the beginning but "almost always worst" isn't true. Both Int & carrier version have quality ROMs & you just have to be more patient with carrier versions.

By "options" I meant "breadth of selection" -- not the quality of individual roms. Hinting at speed of official updates as well. I definitely see how my initial posting was lacking.

[Q] Problems updating (to 4.3) an AT&T Note II, but on tMobile

Hi. I haven't been able to find anything on this topic. I have an N7105 Galaxy Note II that I bought from an AT&T customer. The only problem is that I am using it on TMobile. (It is officially unlocked from AT&T, etc.) The problem now comes in upgrading to 4.3. TMobile uses Kies, but Kies only wants to upgrade me to 4.1.2, which I am already on (build JZO54K.1317UCAMH3). AT&T only updates OTA. When I check for OTA update it says it is checking AT&T's servers, but I am not so sure as it never finds anything. I think it is checking TMobile servers which aren't set up for OTA or don't recognize my phone type.
Also, I went into Best Buy to the Samsung rep, and they flashed my phone with their program and put a wonderful new version of 4.1.2 over my old one (nothing changed).
I am looking for solutions that will work for my phone to get 4.3, where I can get Galaxy Gear support, the photosphere camera, spen, etc.
My first question is, if I can find a TMOBILE Rom, will it work on my AT&T Note II (similar phone, but not the same? I have the N7105). (I would like TMobile goodies on there instead of AT&T. Any custom ROMs support that?)
Second, does the AT&T build (if I can find one) work with Gear well and does the photosphere camera work well? The Samsung rep said AT&T did not work with gear well presently on Note II and I read somewhere else where the camera was not working.
Any custom ROMS I should look at that would work on my phone and get me GEAR, SPEN, PHOTOSPHERE etc? I can't seem to find that.
Any suggestions or directions I should look would well be appreciated. Thank you!

N7105 "officially unlocked" by AT&T? LOL, funny...you SURE its a 7105? If it is, then you still have to wait, as they havent released 4.3 for North America yet as far as i know...well they did but then pulled it right away.
if you want all that extra samsung stuff to work you need to go with a touchwiz based 4.3 custom rom. It hasnt been released yet,so ergo, its not available for developers to make a custom rom out of it (stateside anyway)
sounds like keis is working fine, bc the 7105 is the UNLOCKED LTE North American version VERSION, the 7100 is the international version without LTE, and they are diffrent.
and you actually WANT T-MOBILE bloat ware? put this in the googler " Tmobile applications apk. good luck with that bc no one ever want to bundle "branded APKs" but then you say "instead of AT&Ts, are you implying that its already on there? and you went to Best Buy? they put it on a machine?
your best bet is to just sell that thing and buy a note 3 outright, doesnt sound like you need try and flash/root stuff.

Thanks. I was just so tired of using an AT&T phone on TMobile, I thought some of the related programs might be nice, but I see your point. They do have the upgrade for AT&T now, but I am told it is sucking battery life something fierce. Per your suggestion, I am looking for a good Note 3. Thanks!

Will ZU C6806 from Bell Mobility (Canada) work in the U.S.?

Looking to get a ZU, preferably the 6806 since I'm with AT&T, and I found one for sale from Canada, probably on their Bell Mobility network...
Does anyone know if this would this work here in the US?
Also, on a side note, anyone familiar with any issues purchasing from Canada via ebay... customs, duties, taxes, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

I hate being such a newbie...
- What does having a sim lock mean?
- I thought the Z ultra 6806's were sold as unlocked phones... has a different meaning?
- I'm not interested in customizing the the ROM, or rooting, or anything similar, (at least not yet) so this is not an issue for me.
Help?
having a sim lock means the phone will only work with the provider that sells the phone, in canada only bell is the exclusive dealer for the XZU, if you want to use this phone on any other network you will need to buy an unlock code. they go for about $30 and takes a day, you provide them with your IMEI and they will email you the code when its processed.
im in canada but since the phone is from bell and im on rogers i had to get the sim unlocked for it to work on my network.
if the phone for sale is a bell phone then no it isnt unlocked, the only other local place to buy it is from the sony store and those come sim unlocked, the only huge difference from the bell phone and sony store is that the bootloader is locked for bell, if you read the previous post that means its harder to root and we can not use custom roms ( personally for me its not a huge downfall since i like the oem roms more atm)
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks at&t uses band 4 for lte so does bell and rogers ( i receive lte) so it should be fine.
the only thing you have to worry about to use the phone is spend an extra $30 for sim unlock.
if anything in my post is wrong feel free to correct everyone as im just trying to be helpful =)

Switching to AT&T and buying a no contract phone?

I''m considering switching from Verizon to AT&T, and buying a phone off-contract.
1. Having been on these forums for a while, I am under the impression that AT&T phones, in general, both get Android updates sooner than Verizon phones, and have root methods discovered sooner. Are these accurate impressions?
2. I'm considering buying an off-contract phone from GSM Nation. Is this the cheapest/best option? If not, where?
That would be the best option IMO. Im with att and considered buying unlocked from gsm nation, instead I went with buying a T-Mobile variant

As far as rooting goes. I'm not sure AT&T is the best way to go. AT&T always requests that OEMS lock down the phones. I'd get the tmobile variant and get an unlock code from somewhere online if possible.

I cannot say which of those two are better as I do not know, though I'd assume an int. version would support a broader spectrum of bands than a carrier specific version, I simply meant that an AT&T branded sgs6e would have a locked BL and there is no option to root. Though I could be mistaken about the root. An AT&T version will probably never see any development and rom support. at least not in any near future.

To answer your first question..no...AT&T is generally several months behind Verizon and all the others for that matter.
