[ROM Preview] Partially working AOKP ICS port for HTC View 4G - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

First of all, I know that this might not be the right forum for this, but since this id is new I am not allow to post the thread on the development forum. Now that I got that out of the way. I think a lot of you would really enjoy this video =)
We have started an effort to port HTC View to AOKP ICS. It's far from fully working. But we hope to get some of the basic functionality working in the coming weeks before we release the rom. So stay tuned!

List of things that are working so far.
WiFi, touch screen, captivity buttons(no back light), GPS, sound, HW accelaration? (not sure, as we don't know how to test it), internal sd card
List of things that we're working on before a rom release.
1. On screen button has weird look on some apps, it shrinks to a very small icons.
2. HD movies don't play, Omx codec issue?
3. Touch screen seems to be un-responsive in some game apps.
4. BT doesn't work at all (not as important)
5. Pen doesn't work at all (not as important)
If you have any ideas on how to fix these issues or provide some ideas what could be the cause of the issue (for example, you encounter the issue in other devices and know where to look for the issue) Please let us know by posting on the thread or PM us so we could speed up the release.
This thread is now close and has been moved to development forum as there is a pre-alpha rom for download.

That looks great, i dont have an evo view, but a flyer bu i see that you have been able to avoid the graphic seizure we have on the flyer roms, i think maybe you and drew garen could colaborate some of your work, but idk, im not a dev or anything, but looks great

Drew Garen ROM
Same here hope you can collaborate with drew to get the graphical seizure issue worked ot between the two of you - I'll post this in Drew Garen's Dev thread.

We're open to share our experiences, if someone post specific questions regards to a specific problem like graphical seizure issue mhkabir98 mentioned. We could provide some ideas. But keep in mind that we're still talking about 2 different devices so there might be areas where they will differ.
Can you elaborate or maybe post a short video of what you mean by graphical seizure?

if i get the time i will eventually take some pics and tape it so you can see it

Wow, looks great so far. Hope to see WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS working soon.
I'm willing to test if you need it. I don't really use my View for anything important right now.

awesome man! pumped!

looking good! thanks for sharing the progress. sounds very promising. as a view user, the idea of getting ics before the flyer makes me grin.

Got sound to work. Graphic is much better now, there are no red boarders anymore. Wifi is so close to working.... thanks for the offer, will probably need help when we test app compatibility.

funny,
i think the Flyer is at the same stage too
you're in a competition and reached the same breakthrough around the same time, cool!
you should work with Garen on the wifi solution, there are always room for programmers to fix things.

This is awesome!!! I had kind if given up.

Got a newbie question. Since we're building this rom from HTC HC kernel source + AOKP source tree. Does this consider porting or building a rom? What is the difference?

my personal opinion which is: porting if you have no compatible drivers available or framework already working on the platform.
- If HTC did not develop any drivers and framework for ICS and for our view/flyer, it becomes a port.
- If you use drivers from another device because HTC did build it, its a port.
- If you take panel device kernel driver and adapt it to this device, its a port. but changes are development.
porting is using existing source or drivers and make it work on another device.
kernel is an exception since all of it is opensource and everything build a custom kernel.
framework in aokp builds are modified aosp sources, where most is compiled from source with changes to source (which becomes a port, like you see old games ported to new devices)
but those i made, are nearly 100% ports, i did smali changes, a few library hardcoding changes into binary files, and only a few kernel changes.
i would call my changes 100% porting.
even if i ported a camera driver from desire hd, which again is not build from scratch.
a rom build is very common as i see it, when guys combine files after their choice and changes some graphics + apk's changes. that is a definate rom build. if you got not development c/java/smali involved) it cannot be a port or a developer rom, its a rom mod(ified) of an original with changes.
its not easy to define "build" .
a modified rom build, or compiled build from source.
not a direction on the term, but just my opinion on this.
(previously already mentioned that ports never are any good, and ICS builds from source are better.)
some people porting are better than others.

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I am glad to finally bring you the Evervolv series of ROM's. This is an alpha build, however most, if not all items should be working. I'm going to keep this post vague and update it when the rom becomes beta worthy.
This rom would not be possible without the CM team, so i give them props any time i can.

Everything should be working as of now (with the small except to the Brightness widget, it's functionality is there... but the UI updating is not just yet). The Nexus One i have has no sim card, so i can't test everything. However English is the main supported language, if google hasn't added the language support, i haven't either. This means certain apps will have no support at all (i.e. Evervolv Settings). If there is someone that would like to contribue the efforts to languages, we'd be more than happy to have you aboard.

Q&A
Is this CM7?
No, this is a build that started from AOSP. However, some of the fixes and few features have been derived from the CyanogenMod Team, including the CM kernel.

agree with this... this rom already support app2sd??
Liking so far. Its a breath of fresh air. Just something nice and new, really smooth and responsive.
It appears a2sd is not there? Maybe I'm wrong but under settings it said ext (unavailable).
Also, its a little eh that I can't change the dock settings (I know I can use LauncherPro and I probably will but I was trying to avoid that) because I use Chomp and DolphinHD so those dock shortcuts are useless.
Screen off animation is SWEET and boot animation is stellar.
Overall, seems very solid for a first release. I'll stick with it for now, assuming camera and camcorder work (I'm headed out to Sea World with the wife and son today/tomorrow so I need a functioning camera).
Great job and great release. I'll report back more Monday night when I get home and have used it for a few days.
Does this rom have the "wonk" problem? With nightly Rom I still have lots of problems

Great rom. I love the font and bootanimation. Wish the rom had a2sd.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
OK, so after a few days use I'm noticing a few things.
Battery life seems to be average, nothing special. I hardly used it at all as I was on a small vacation (didn't make any phone calls, hardly text at all, didn't take pictures, surfed the web very very lightly) and my battery would very quickly drop to the 80's in % and beyond. Although, this could possibly be associated to my next thing.
When charging, light on top is green (fully charged) when it hits 90% battery. It does continue charging to 100% but I found that very odd that it turns green to indicate full when its at 90%...
As stated, the font is very nice too. Everything overall seems smooth, especially for a first release. I'd be nice to see new releases soon, of course with a change log etc.
Looking forward to see what is to come.

[UPDATE 2/6/12] ICS Rom Beta now available elsewhere!

BETA ICS 4.0.X Brought to you by Team DRH is NOW AVAILABLE ELSEWHERE! (And if you don't know where elsewhere is you don't deserve it )
February 2nd
IceCreamSandwich is now available brought to you by the genius's that make up Team DRH! Due to the Teams wishes no direct links shall be posted so if you want it you will have to do one of the following:
1. Go over to -that other site-, find the Gtab section and the ICS Beta thread and download it, OR
2. wait for it to be officially posted on XDA here (which I have no idea when it will happen.)
and that's all I have to say on the matter. This here post can be found later in the thread but I'm quoting it here as well for convenience:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Sorry I haven't updated in a while! been a bit busy but I come bearing wonderful news! in the last 2 months development has shifted entirely from Honeycomb to IceCreamSandwich and rather than the .36 kernel it's being built with the .39 kernel. While this may sound like it would take a lot longer it really isn't due to the source code for ICS being released so the devs don't have to jump through hoops trying to get stuff to work.
The reality of it is that it's a heck of a lot easier to get ICS working than it would be to have continued with HC3.2. and ICS IS working. Fosser2 said that there's a possibility that a public beta build MIGHT be released next week if everything goes well. (so we can cross our fingers and hope). I believe everything BUT the camera is working now so they are likely just polishing some things up and making sure it won't kill out tablets before releasing anything publicly.
Here's a couple videos made by one of the alpha testers to wet your whistles.

Old Updates from Honeycomb
It appears that the folks over at Slatedroid have gotten the the .36 kernel to boot into Linux and Honeycomb 3.2 on our tabs! This is great news cause this will give them the ability to see what they need to change in the kernel to get full Hardware Acceleration!!! For the ones that don't know, the .36 kernel is the magical kernel that gives honeycomb hardware acceleration on our chips. He's a quote from the dev thread:
UPDATE 11/24
So Ch3vr0n5 over at SlateDroid has posted that they are accepting 20 applications for alpha testing the .36 kernel. Space is limited so make sure to read this thread over on SD if you wish to apply

Update 10/05/11
We have ALL the nvidia proprietary drivers working in the .36 kernel now. The streak image would have been useful if it had the same accelerometer as we do , but it doesn't.
I'm not sure what sound chip the streak 7 has, but if it was the same as ours it would be useful.
Each manufacturer has the ability to use whatever sensor devices they want. This also changes how they are connected to the tegra2.
Update:
Wake from sleep fixed, I was trying to get the lowest power sleep mode to work, but it seems to be an issue in the bootcode embedded in the tegra2. There is a workaround but the bootloader needs to support it, which is why I was trying the hannspad 1.3 bootloader.
lp1 isn't bad however, my tab slept all night and woke up with a full battery.
There is a really annoying error on the i2c bus at the moment causing the capacitive keys not to work. (really, really annoying)
The heat issue seems to be wifi related, others are not having the same issue.
Once the i2c issue is fixed then most of the kernel issues are done.
Sound is likely a mix of kernel and rom issues.

Reminder:
guys, can you make sure people dont use my hannspad kernel on the gtab.
.36 doesn't use the ODM like .32 does, so things like gpios, buses and regulators look a lot more device specific now.
I'm concerned you could do some damage by using it.
obviously happy for you to use the rom, its roughly based on VC9,with some Adam changes and pulls from the a500, but you really need a gtab kernel,to play with it.
I've used some of treznorx changes in my repo, (hell I've even been that lazy i haven't bothered changing his file names yet)so there's obviously shared ground, and I'm happy to pay it back how I can...
it looks like mohan has a pretty solid gtab kernel built now.
have fun ..

Yes that is currently how we are testing the kernel by injecting the kernel into the Vegacomb ROM and making a change in init.harmony.rc; however, once we get closer to a polished product we will give tlbardeljr and anyone else who is interested notice so they can starting tinkering away at 3.2 for a future release. We should have an alpha test version out in a week or so but don't hold us to that
Cheers
Also the flashback team have finally responded!! Here is a quote:
"Give it a few weeks when this kernel is complete the Flashback team or other modders will probably make a 3.2 port."
Flashback: We are all ready tabletcraze just have not been posting here because dont want to distract from your work. (awesome job to all of you!)
I do expect there will need to be framework changes. Newbe and the vega guys are digging through these now so a lot have been fixed already.
If there is anything you guys want me to do now just let me know.....otherwise I will go back to staying out of your hair so you can continue the awesome work.
So keep a lookout for a flashback update soon after this kernel releases!!

Great work from Kushiels over in the Adam camp getting sound code working well! Actually, great work from everyone who has contributed by way of code, testing, building, gathering info, cheering the devs, etc! The gang on our IRC channel have all done a fabulous job getting everything to where it is today...
I have sound on both speakers...volume buttons fixed...working on volume level and a new sensors library right now....
todo :
wakelocks,
PM,
fix long hold on pwr button,
fix USB so it works without workaround,
fix battery fuel guage,
fix media buffering,
fix mmc so it static maps to avoid SD card issues at boot,
and last but not least the crappy camera...
It will soon be time to get this in the hands of our ROM developers to do preview and perform their magic.

Ok, I have been gone for a while dealing with stuff but the dev team has been trucking along and we have new contributors. Currently I think we are actually moving to a 2.6.38.3 base instead of 2.6.36.3 because it just likes our tablet much better. Yay! rootfs Ubuntu is booting and touchscreen works with wifi so I feel we are closer to our end goal, booting android and having full HW acceleration. Hope to post a more in depth update later when I get a few minutes to get back into the game. Check page ten (I think) for a youtube video showing Ubuntu running.

"Still working on it. Mayday-Jay has been doing a lot of work on the kernel and he is able to get the Gtab working on the BackTrack5 correctly.
Yesterday, I got a few debug logs from the 4950 and Pershoot's .43 kernel. With those, we think we will be able to bridge the gap and have something that will boot on Android.
The biggest hurdle right now seems to be related to the clocks since the frequencies are different from 2.6.32 and 2.6.36.
If anyone is playing with the kernel and got some debug logs or more information, do not hesitate to send it to us."

Actually, it's not a port of VegaComb 3.2 (Honeycomb 3.2) they are working on as the title suggests.
They are just in the beginning stages of trying to convert the Adam .36 kernel that Rayman did. Rayman had to rewrite various drivers for the Adam hardware (which is similar to, but not the same as ours) to get it working on the Adam. Hopefully they can do the same for ours.
Update 08/25
@aabbondanza
yes you are right atm but none of our honeycomb ports are built to use hardware acceleration(even though they can be changed to do so). So that means our only option for testing is vegacomb. So if they get it to boot vegacomb then that will be our first rom with HW ACC and the others can rewrite their already made honeycomb ports to use the new kernel

Granted, a VegaComb 3.2 port would be great, but, no one has gotten it to work on the gTab and no one has announced that they are working on a VC 3.2 port.
Our current HC roms are operating on .32 kernels that don't fully support HC, while Rayman has created a .36 HC kernel that supports full h/w accelleration on the NI Adam (another close cousin of the gTab as the Vega is).
Even the guys over at Slatedroid who trying to convert the Adam .36 kernel discussed trying to use the Vega release as a starting point but decided that since the Adam kernel now supports full hardware accelleration & that Rayman had offered assistance if needed, that would be easiest route to getting this working on the gTab.
IMO, the first step in achieving full accelleration is going to be switching a .36 kernel. Once we have a working gTab .36 kernel then we should look forward to newer versions of Honeycomb & or Icecream Sandwich.
Yes you are right sorry I guess that I didn't understand your last post lol Thank you for going into more detail

Title is still kind of misleading. Kernel programming is no simple task. They are at the very beginning stages. I'll be much more excited when they start making progress. Hats off to them though because I surely couldn't do it. At this point they appear to be wavering between continuing to work with the Adam kernel or maybe switching to the Vega one.

Hello People, I'm Moon And trough my world of android have i gotten lowend devices for own use. i love them because they're so cheap and still Great.
I have come from the GT540 Optimus to the ZTE blade and now the x8,
(I kept the Blade trough.) I am a big fan of Racht and his sense ports, what i want to ask you people for, since Racht seems to have disappeared should we do what developers and friends of him do. We finish what he started.
Most important is currently The GL Drivers I think, Maybe some RAM Management. The free ram is very low. (about 40\50mb) This causes Rosie to reload after coming from other apps. this would be cool to fix.
I asked XDA MEMBER # Kenia1234 (he ported it to the SGS)
About 3d\open gl and wifi. this was his reply.
however as regards 3D I fixed it using my device's libs under system/lib/egl or under /vendor/lib/egl and of course using a CM7 powered kernel...
as regards the wifi, it's a little bit more complicated...you'd need to have the bins of your device under /system/bin and the firmwares all in order, as the kernel wants to...
hope this was useful!!

I think he needs a little rest...
racht said that he will port HTC kernel and that means fully working Sense rom as soon as he's back.
I don't know where he is or what is he doing, but he's on xda often. (last activity today).
And I think he's getting Xperia Ray - his post here. Also that's the last thing he posted.
Anyway, the man will spoke, and we shoud donate to him a new device if he's selling his one. To continue development. But, we need to wait until the man spokes!!
I appreciate racht so much, and I hope he doesn't forget our X8.
OH.

I See, Thanks for Providing this information to the masses.
The Ray is the best Choice after the Arc, For me, Since i like big screens.
But yes. Lets just hope for the best. the Guy i updated on, (On the op) is doing GB sense too. We should let Racht Rest and hope for the best.
In racht's last Sense Port there is a lot of bugs. I really love that rom but it has a lot of bugs.
I was without SIM Card and in the Notification Bar it was showing that i used %S(something like this) tries for the unlock key and blablabla.
SD Safe to remove bug in ROOT Apps
I tried to connect the phone to my car radio and it doesn't show anything in the phone, only the icon changed to charging, but no led, no popup for connecting, nothing. And the radio does not recognized the phone. (i think it will happen the same in the computer, i think)
3d, wifi, 3G and vibra not working, as it shows on the original topic
So this is what has to be worked on
I cannot help you so much because i'm not a good java developer, i can only understand some parts of the code, but i cannot write it. But if you want a beta tester i'm here to try to find the maximum bugs i can
I will love if someone could continue what Racht did
I am following the news.
As I have said some months ago, X8 is now added to official CM tree, you can see here :
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=shakira
So, I guess thats the end of CM story (even that I prefer tweaks by doixanh).
Sense rom depends on kernel features that do not work on .29 kernels.
See HTC threads, all new roms require .32 or .35 kernels, lets hope X8 will get a new kernel ported.
And thanks again for support

Great to see your alive Racht! And whut o:? does this mean that this rom is a fully working CM7 release like my Blade has?
And Yes, I've heard about the basics of porting sense.
Even trough you would be the best teacher.
Does this mean That Your Leaving the Shakira forums now racht?
wow! is this ROM stable knowing that it came from cyanogen?? please can someone confirm this? it doesn't have any details of its features included on it...

Blagus said that we have to port HTC kernel first, but it's .32 or newer kernel. We have only .29 now. Therefore it follows that we can't have sense on X8 now.

[DEV]Ubuntu-touch for all Xperia2011 devices

Hello,
Developers, I really need help to get the ubuntu-touch port working again!
After the first release of Ubuntu-Touh I tried to port it again to our devices, but I don't get them booting. I only get a black screen. I have updated all sources on github and made the appropriate changes. You can find all relevant sources and information on my new website http://danwin.github.io/ubuntu-touch.html where I have uploaded the non-bootng builds for developers.
I still have the old builds available for those, who want a booting ubuntu-touch, but without any functionality: http://danwin.github.io/ubuntu-touch.html
Did ubuntu can be used as daily software/rom ?

Not yet, but in 2-3 days we'll have kernel fixes available to add support for daily builds of ubuntu, which have a lot of improvements.

Finally! Thanks.. :good: :good: :good:
that's f***ing awesome, great
Review
tested it out... Great work DanWin1210..
Although it took me i guess 45 min to 1 hour to install the ubuntu part, it was good and working..
Is nice n slow and laggy..but hey, pretty good for developmental stages..
As a review, i'll jot down some working/not working stuff that I found.
Working:
standard apps like messaging (only UI)
gallery,
the other ubuntu UI as well
Not Working:
Network
Clock (no date n time from network)
Wifi detects network so I assume its working, although the keyboard dosent show up so no way of entering the password and testing it out.
A note for all the users:
All in all, if you're mad about having a look at ubuntu, do install this rom; installation does take a lot of time but never hangs, so be patient.
Mind you though, the network and all isnt working so the phone pretty much remains a toy..
So wait a couple of days, until the devs work their magic, and get it up n running on our hardware insufficient phones..
Also, a note for DanWin1210:
If possible please do post how you are developing the rom. It would be very informative. Github is for proficients, and for "advanced beginners " like me, it would be quite helpful.
So, thanks again for taking the initiative. keep it up!
thx man, relly owesome, great work

On http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting is a good guide about porting CyanogenMod-10.1 to ubuntu, I was using this guide with sources from Antibillos (https://github.com/cm42semc) for haida. After I got it running, I made a thread here and asked some developers to make the daily images of ubuntu working, which are not booting yet. Officiallysonyrebel is working on some kernel patches for that. When he has finished with them, I'll build the device-specific images with these modifications, upload them here and hope, that everything is working.
Awesome. cant wait to try it!

making it probably the smallest ROM in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been looking for the worlds smallest ROM and I think I have found it
going to have to purchase a bigger SDcard before I can test out this bad boy

partially yes, because It is a minimal build of android, but you also have to unpack the generic ubuntu part onto your sd-card, which is really big (more than 600 MB)

Thats a small price to pay considering most of my apps sit on my system rather than on the sdcard
its lots of system memory that I need to improve performance and stability not bothered about sdcard
Hi guys,
I wanna clarify some of my doubts... Actually this rom is android os right?? Only the UI is polished to be ubuntu ??
If no.....then how can I use playstore (apk) apps in this os?? And if this is ubuntu, can it be used as daily phone os???

This is ubuntu, not android, so you won't be able to install apk apps only deb files, and it is not usable as a daily phone OS yet, because we have to use the old mwc-demo version and a complete version of ubuntu-touch with all functions will be released in 2014, it is only intended for developers, testers and to have a port for our Xperia2011 devices available. If we could get the daily builds working, it would have a lot of improvements.

Support
We spend an astonishing amount of time developing this software. We can't spend much time on XDA as a result, so if you need support, please try the following:
1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our website. Carbon FAQ
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Ask a question on our IRC channel. Connect to #teamcarbon on irc.freenode.net or click here. You'll find several other Carbon fans and usually one or more devs as well. Please be polite.

Hi Meticulus,
I have a new phone now so haven't been around on this forum for quite some time, but it suddenly occurred to me that I might be able to breath new life into my old sgp5 by using it as a media hub connected to a hard drive and an amplifier.
Im Using your 4.4.4 carbon room at the moment and after a bit of monkeying around I came to the conclusion that USB otg is not implemented. (Was it just a wild dream I had that you sorted that out years ago?).
Anyway, I was wondering whether you had any ambitions of implementing it in 5.1.(I know all about the necessary y splitter cable etc and as a fixed home media hub this would cause no disadvantage).
I'd love to get my sgp back on the road again.
What do you think?

Ahh, Thanks for the info.
Using USB Host Controller I get a promising result on the info screen, but not so promising on the USB screen (see screenshots).
I don't know whether this is a problem with what I'm doing or a problem with the ROM.
Do you have any idea?
Hi,
I'm now on stock GB 2.3.6 on my YP-G70 (int version) and i'm looking for a slimest and fastest build. What do you suggest? I'd like camera to be working as well as Gapps and GPlay working. I'm looking on your page Meticulus, but I don't know if Carbon LP 5.1.1 is the right decision or should I try any other build? Thanks in advice for your suggestion. Also a step-by-step update instruction for newbies is welcome

Carbon LP 5.1.1 does not perform well in some situations. I run this ROM without gapps and for the things I do (SD quality video mostly), it runs OK. This ROM won't be for everyone.
It's hard to say, KitKat ROM's are the most functional; meaning I've put the most work into making all the hardware and software function properly. KitKat ROM's are definitely faster than LP. ICS and JB ROM's would probably be faster but also a little more out of date and a little less functional.
I have written extremely detailed instructions for installing Carbon ROM (KitKat).
here: http://www.meticulus.co.vu/p/carbon-rom-for.html
There is a line that says "If you are comming from stock..." with a link that says what you need to do if you are on stock.

Can you post dmesg/kmsg output while plugging in otg cable with device connected? Oh, and are you connecting a thumb drive and does it show evidence that it powers up?
I do not have a Y-Cable so I was never able to test and at the time no one seemed interested in this but if you'll keep workin' with me, perhaps we can get this working properly. I did test it enough to see that the usb device was recognized in dmesg even without power...
You might also check /dev folder and see if anything new appears like "sda or sda1". If so you might be able to mount it the standard linux way.
mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /storage/usbdisk

I've installed carbon ROM 4.4.4 (CARBON-KK-UNOFFICIAL-20141107-1920-venturi) afew days ago. also installed this ROM (CARBON-5.1.1-METICULUS-20160705-1413-venturi) and its updates yesterday.
In both cases, the camera quality is extremely low.
What can I do to maximize camera quality?
In addition, because there is little space impossible to install gapps.
Does this ROM Support moving apps to SD card?

Those who have followed development for the past 4-5 years know, but for those that are new, I have outlined the challenges with the camera here:
http://www.meticulus.co.vu/2016/08/carbon-lp-511-for-galaxy-player-5_19.html
In short, there is nothing you can do to improve the quality of the camera on this ROM. I camera image quality is important to you, your only real option is stock. Working on the camera is frustrating but I continue to try from time to time.:highfive:
If you install the smallest gapps, there is sufficient space. I know, I have done it.:good:
This is the exact package I have been using...

I've only just managed to find time to reply! Things are hectic...
I think although working together to fix it sounds great, in practice It might literally take forever because I'm just super busy at work at the moment. What you need is a cable right? If I donated some money for you to get a cable would that work?
I feel really annoyed that I can't find time to help out, and a little guilty... but I really can't...
