HD Voice - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So I know it order to take full advantage of this feature both phone require HD Voice -- But what about on our side? If we call someone, does the second microphone on top of the phone block out the background noise for the person on the other side of the call?

......... question when the phone isnt even out yet
*Mod Edit: lets try to be a little nicer next time to start...

That is the idea behind the second microphone we will see how well it works with the Evo LTE once we get it.
As far as the HD Voice the tech behind it is called Wideband Audio and not only do both phones have to be using it but it is not native to to the network so Sprint has to deploy it market by market(Assuming they already are with Network Vision upgrades)so it will be a while before we really get to test it. Here is an article explaining the science behind it:
HD Voice

Come on man..Unlike the Evo3D forums i'd hope we would all start to show each other some type of respect in the new forums..There was a better way to go about that.

I was not aware of this. Thanks.

From the Engagdet test, it sounds like both sides need to have HD Voice. The idea is that it does ambient noise cancellation with the second mic, but this audio stream is "encoded" by your phone and only "decoded" by the receiving phone. I can only imagine that all to be a bunch of bs, but who knows, maybe its really just a digital stream of audio at some increased bitrate compared to a "regular" voice call. Sprint will supposedly be using this on a bunch of new handsets coming out soon...but that's all conjecture until we see the EVO Shift 4G LTE+ with more LTEness.

Wow, really?..Obviously this question was not directed towards you, as you have very little to add to the forum. Whether the device is out or not, there are still plenty of people who have a better understanding on the actual way this feature works than I do.
As for everyone else, thanks for the feedback, especially the one from geek.com, I found that to be extremely informative.

I gotta assume the noise cancelling software runs even on non-HD-voice calls, right? I didn't think the dual mics was part of HD voice, just a normal feature on a flagship phone.

Anyone still remember the HD Voice that is supposed to be deployed "by the end of 2012?" Ha I was looking this up today but it seems like there's not really any news about it anymore it just kind of died off.
I still think it would be a really awesome feature though if it were to spread around...

One week till launch! Too many iPhone fan boys clogging the xda threads and trying to trash this phone . Dual core, sense 3.0, qHD screen , 1gb of RAM , 4gb internal . That is one beast ass phone. Oh and it does 3D just for giggles. With the devs here at xda this phone will by far exceed everyone's expectations .
BTW you don't I repeat don't have to use 3D its not a gimmick or the whole purpose just a simple feature way too many people are trying to say it is bad.

Agreed, what's the point of listening to people that have actually used the phone and have provided a critical assessment! No. I'd much rather read off the spec sheet and declare it AWESOME.

I been on my Instinct since 5 months ago since my Hero was destroyed :/. Anything is better than that so I wont be disappointed with the Evo 3D.
Awesome indeed!!!
I was fortunate enough to pick up an HTC seed unit last night and let tell you. THIS PHONE IS AWESOME!!!
Not even talking about the 3d... which upon first encounter was a bit tricky to get used to, but after shooting over 50 pictures/videos there's a science to getting it right.
The power of this phone lies in the dual core processor, the "super lcd" display, and updated software makes the phone run like a dream.
I was actually not very excited for this phone. I left android for WP7. (say what you may, but I use my phone a lot for work.) I can happily say the Evo 3d has brought me back into the fold...
But in short.. it's definately worth the wait!
What was your impression of the 2D pic quality (in relation to
4g?

Honestly, the 2D picture quality is comprable to the Evo. I had a buddy take a picture of the exact same thing side by side on his Evo 4G. The quality is identical... unless you go full zoom on both devices, in which case the 4G is a winner, but not by a huge margin.
My biggest problem with the camera is the dedicated camera button. It is auto-focuses on light pressure and snaps the picture on the full press. It may just be because I have an otterbox case on it, but I find myself pushing so hard that I make the picture out of focus. Not a major gripe, as I'm learning to have a bit more... "finese" with the camera button. Ironically, I find the dedicated camera button to be EXTREMELY handy aside from my lack of initial nimbleness with it. Here are a few random 2D pictures I took if anyone wants to compare for themselves... and yes, very random pictures, I'm at work and don't have a lot to photograph..
Old Navy sign is no zoom / full zoom from the exact same distance. No zoom picture of a dairy queen cup... yup... I know...

3D Gimmick or Not...

So I've been selling Evo3ds at my job now for awhile, and when someone asked me anything about the 3D I said it was a joke but the phone was worth it's weight in gold from the hardware inside. Then last week I downloaded this youtube video in 720p and watched it on my phone. Normally I don't post and leach all day but if anyone wants to see what a video should look like on a 3d screen, give this one a shot.

I never said I had a problem with it. Just saying I don't use it. Bluetooth is standard on all phones now, so it can't be a gimmick, the 3D on the other hand is a gimmick because they tried to use it as a selling point where less than 10% of the users will use it. And yes I think siri is a gimmick along the same lines, less than 10% will actually use it.

Ha technology advances and has to start somewhere. Bluetooth wasnt standard on everyphone when it was invented. I bet only high dollar phones had it. Same as touch screen and HD, people are happy without them but most phones these days have both. So in a few years every phone might be 3d, so u will look dumb calling it a gimmick.

Doubt I'll look dumb. Here's the definition of gimmick, as you can clearly see by definition it IS a gimmick:
Code:
[B]gim·mick[/B][I] noun[/I] \ˈgi-mik\
a: an important feature that is not immediately apparent
b: an ingenious and usually new scheme or angle
c: a trick or device used to attract business or attention <a marketing gimmick>
a: hmm, important feature? I'd say not now, but it could be I'll give you that
b: it is an ingenious design sure
c: a trick used to attract attention, 100% exactly what it is at this point (but I'll give you that it may become standard on all phones at some point, but remember Bluetooth was a gimmick on the first phones that used it also.)
Well words can stray from their actual definition depending on their context. Not saying u meant it any different but most people (as i take it) could sub in the term "rip-off" for gimmick in their sentences. Which i dont think is fair to say about this great phone when someone ask how good something is.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
on vids and pics it's semi-useful (especially in places where depth is needed, like filming sports, action, taking pics of action, etc.) but i love it on games. you dont have to guess on how far away something is by its size. you actually can tell how far it is.

It's kind of a gimmick.. and I'm sure it hurt sales as people thought that everything on the phone was in 3D.
Personally I think it's nice for movies and gimmicky for your own content. But I bought the phone because of its specs anyway, so if I lost the 3D option I'd be ok.
It should have been marketed as an added feature but once it got incorporated into the official title of phone it became the main attraction (gimmicky). Doesn't mean it isn't a good phone but it put many off before it was even released. It should have been a "featured player" instead of a "reoccurring cast member".
I rock 3d pics often, why not, might as well...
A good way to show off your phone..
Even if lacking 3d the phones specs are beast,
Could of been designed a lil better in the asthetic department, the camera button poking out, the camera on the back is asking to be broken or scratched up, it sticks out decently far. I rock a otterbox defender tho so these problems are "covered up" literally...

Yeah, I have one friend who's presently phone shopping who won't consider the Evo3D because of the 3D feature. Basically she thinks it's goofy, just kind of rolled her eyes when the guy at the store described it. I told her everything else about the phone is awesome, but she couldn't get past the marketing, which focuses pretty much entirely on the 3D.

Sprint Direct Connect Now -- Who's ready to get their Nextel back? [NOW AVAILABLE]

I've missed having PTT since I gave up Nextel for my HTC Mogul. But this news has got me stoked, and glad I've stayed with Sprint. Coming in the form of an Android application, this is rumored to connect with all past, present, and future Direct Connect phones...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/20/sprint-leaked-memo-direct-connect-now-android-app/
Anyone else able to get excited about this?
UPDATE: Released today, September 16, 2012. Only available for the Kyocera Rise in the Play Store. More phones to follow, but no information coming from Sprint about what or when...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qualcomm.qchat.dlc
Here's a video demonstration of the application from Sprint:
Not really, I always found it annoying. Nothing more annoying than listening to conversations in your super market by some wanna be thugs talkin to his baby mama

Hell yeah! PTT works great in the field. @
Always saw it as useful to people who can't be bothered to take off gloves or drop tools, like construction workers or garbage men. Its just instant speaker phone, right? I just remember a few friends having it and hearing that annoying chirp and listening to a conversation i'm not a part of. Pick up the phone and talk if you aren't preoccupied, chances are people aren't impressed and find you annoying.
PTT could be a blessing or a curse.
LONG time ago, I worked as an IT in a hospital, and was given a huge-ass iDEN phone. While it was great for my purpose (people in another branch could always get in touch with me), I grew tired of thug wannabes dialing random numbers and trying to see if they find a female on other end. Always pleasant when you sit in a meeting and all of a sudden *chirp* yo baby wassup! And no, I always had to keep this thing on, even during meetings. Company policy.
But other than that, it was great. Looking forward to it on Android, as long as you can set privacy settings, and maybe ability to reject callers on initial callup.
Sure, "Thug Wannabes" could be a problem. I grew up in a country part of Central Florida, and EVERYONE has it. They still run it. My dad just got rid of it recently. So, I'm glad it's coming back. There was a way to make your conversations go through the earpiece and not the speaker. Some people just didn't have the decency to do it that way.
Here's my take... If they are using their Data Network for this, than it's going to be worthless, the already existing TikL, is AWFUL if you don't have a decent signal. If it's going to be based off of their talk/text network, then I'm all for it, it would probably work much better.

I use tikl very often and it generally works fine even with only one bar of signal. I think it is by far the best PTT app for android. Tikl also has a privacy setting for all those who don't like that people can just chirp and start talking. With the privacy on no sound can come besides the chirp until you respond.
Well i do agree over hearing conversations can be annoying it wasnt just thugs everyome was guilty of that. I work in construction and always have 2 phones on me. My gs2 ans my i756. Alot of times its so loud i cant hear my gs2 ring but i can hear the 2 way on my nextel. It would be nice for my girlfriend to be able to 2way me if its something important.

HeyTell works pretty well for what it is.
It will be interesting to see if the app Sprint will be using is true time direct connect or voice storage.
The down side is the speakers on some android devices are horrible, EVO 4G and EVO 3D come to mind. Thats one of the main reasons i went to the Epic Touch, better external audio.

Agreed, but looking forward to shouting "SNOOZE" ya bar steward, at it in the Morning
I'm skeptical:
If I want to make fun of my friends with their i**** I say "ask siri what the weather is like in fuerteventura"
If the iSheep does, siri answers after an eternity "I don't know"
an eternity later it she says "Shall I look for you on the internet?"
if you say "yes", you end up with a picture of the island.
Then I take my SGS2, say "weather fuerteventura" in google voice search and seconds later the brower opens with the usual weather graphic.
The iSheeps say it's because it's the german version of siri. But I say BS!
We'll see....
Watching someone trying to get siri to work in a noisy cafe or street is very amusing, they look like such idiots.
They would rather spend 5 minutes trying to get the stupid phone to understand them than actually do it themselves in 5 seconds by tapping the screen a few times.

S-voice does much worse in that video "The joker are taking a fat?" although, of course, this is only the english version.
Thing is, though, as others have pointed out, both do pretty badly in real life. Voice commands are little more than a marketing gimmick right now, good only for performing basic tasks or showing off. Indeed, there's a class action lawsuit on Siri for being portrayed as more effective than she really is.
S-voice and Siri both works exactly same kind. But S3 has more advance features than iPhone 4S. So for now S3 is better, but iPhone 5 will come that can change the whole phone market.
Iphone 5 will come out and disenfranchise all the fanboys because the apple snake no longer has its spiritual head ruling the design process with an iron fist.
We will see i guess, totally not expecting magic though.

So S-voice requires a data connection as well? It'd be bad
I read somewhere that you can take a shot with S-voice: it could be fun and useful. It replaces a remote control if it properly works!

The camera has voice shoot anyway, Samsung disappoint repackaging vlingo, relaunching it, then saying it is new........that's bad practise!

I actually look forward to this too, but I'm going to make the snooze function react to the word "poopypants", because wouldn't that just be great? With the SGS3, "poopypants" can be the first word you say every day, setting the tone for the rest of your day AND annoying the hell out of the wife after a while as an added bonus!
On another thread someone has already confirmed it does nothing without a connection even when its a local request like opening an app.
As to voice control I like it when it can go directly to something that would otherwise take multiple clicks or drilling into menus. Like in my car I can push one button and say "play the Rolling Stones" and it gets it every time. Nice and easy, no drilling into menus, no muss, no fuss. I could also say "temperature, 72 degrees" and it will turn the temp up to 72 but I never do. Its easier to just reach over and spin the knob. The same would be true of the phone. Rather than open the player, scroll to the music, select it, it would be a saving to just name that band and have it playing. On the other hand I'm not sure why I would ask for the weather when I can just tap the screen once and I got it.
there both crap
Like 75% of people who will own this phone, I will never use the voice features, they have always been bad, and I have never been able to find a use for it.
Your voice recognition is bad, and you should feel bad.
I would use it casual, but not professional. ONly to impress friends ;p

Evo lte underrated?

Why is it that our phones are under rated. I mean seriously? I see so many reports that the GS3 is the best Android phone of fall 2012, I would disagree. Although it is a great phone, I would not think that it is the best, if anything I would say EVO LTE and GS3 would be tied at that spot. Would anyone disagree? This is really irritating me!
Its not underrated, its more like under the radar. Lets face it the EVO is a small name in the industry when you have a device across all carriers which is selling at record numbers. The EVO is viewed more as the little engine that could.

So I wonder why they didnt just keep the EVO name across the board rather than come out with the One Series? IMO, I think that the sales for the EVO name aren't gonna stick in the future when they are bringing out same products with different names. Samsung and Apple both market for pretty much one specific phone and run with it, aside from the new Galaxy Notes

Don't forget the promo for the Galaxy SIII is out of control, almost every other commercial is for Samsung that's another big part of that. It has become the house good name for android. Everybody and there mom knows about the SIII and the Iphone even if they don't look at phone the way we do because they have done a great job commercializing the phones.

The EVO is not as popular but the one x is up there with the top devices.

Well, we all know the evo line has had its red headed stepchildren through the generations. I don't care what anyone says about the LTE, IMHO, I made the right choice.

Little exposure compared to its predecessor & even less than the OG EVO which had a lot of TV time.

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.
The constant bashing for the LTE issue is not helping it either. Sprint still has not said officially that they are working on a fix with HTC. This phone had LTE issue in the lab before it launched but Sprint needed the phone to launch otherwise they would risk losing many accounts coming off their 2 year with no new flagship phone to go to. So it was rushed out the gate, and HTC/Sprint have tried to fix the modem twice with an OTA, but have failed both times. My hope that a 3rd round will correct the issue is getting weaker by the day.
I think I'll be taking advantage of the GS3 upgrade on Black Friday and rotating the "EVO Can't do-LTE" to of my other lines that really doesn't care about 4g. Love the EVO's battery life, screen, performance etc, but the LTE issue just hits hard. Kinda like buying a sports car with a nice V8, it looks good, but the manufacturer just hasn't figured out how to get the computer to make all 8 cylinders fire correctly so it's running on 4 cylinders for now.

The difference between HTC and Samsung, I believe, is their market approach.
Samsung has it right. They sell one major phone on multiple carriers, advertise it in ways that appeal to their largest audience (probably 15-35). And they have a few other lower end phones too.
HTC doesn't understand this, I suppose. The One series was halfway there. But then the EVO is too exclusive. Then, to dig HTC deeper into their hole, instead of focusing on marketing and updates for the One series line up, they for some reason think they would come out ahead by spending time and money in development for these new One X+ things.
WTF?
Though I am an HTC fanboy, mostly a Sense Fanboy, I don't deny HTC's bad strategies as a company. If I didn't think TouchWiz looked like something from the Dollar General, I might get a GS3. But what it comes down to when a user chooses a phone today, is what User Interface does that person prefer? Sense? TouchWiz? iOS? BlackberryOS? That is the determining factor, I believe.

BTW,
I loved the other day when a coworker was showing off her new iPhone 5 to everyone who was gathered around. She said, "AND IT DOES VOICE TO TEXT NOW!"
Sorry, had to make fun.
i work at best buy and everyone looking for the gs3, after showing them my phone. they are like i will take that one. i have yet to have a customer take the gs3 over the evo. but they just didnt know the evo was even out. and they were coming from the old one.
i think the evo lte is the best phone out.. not just because i have it but the screen is bangin.. battery life is great.. the lte beats any other phone in quadrants.. linpacks.. antutu benchmarks u name it.. it is funny how the LTE gets NO love at all.. when ever i read write ups on phone tec the LTE never ever gets mentioned.. the LTE is the beast thats nobody talks about.. the gs3 is a dope phone also i just dont like touch wiz at all.. im a HTC guy.. my babys mother has the gs3 i rooted it for her and flashed a few roms on it.. 2 top phones out rite now the evo lte & the gs3!!! :good:
If you ask me, I say this phone is overrated to be honest. This is coming from someone that has owned all 3 of the EVOs. The specs of the phone looks great on paper, but the phone just doesn't perform that well in the real world. Seems like there's more time spent trying to get the phone to run right instead of just enjoying it. HTC failed BIG TIME when they screwed-up the phone's ability to multitask properly. I've been a member of this site for over 6 years and have a very low post count since I've mainly lurked throughout the years. A large portion of my current post count is because of this EVO and trying to get it to run smoothly. This is my second one, btw.
Anytime you have to rely on a web site to fix multiple problems for things that a manufacturer should have made sure were working properly before selling to consumers equals a huge fail IMO. There's a large portion of people on these forums that don't mind spending all of their free time tinkering and fixing their phones, but for an average consumer that leads a busy lifestyle, do you really think they want that kind of hassle, especially if they're not tech savvy? HELL NO!!!

The EVO is exclusive to Sprint, they created the brand because the needed a big push to compete with the other service providers. They weren't just trying to out do Apple, never were. The Apple bashing was to help solidify the brand as a recognizable device easily capable of matching the top smartphone at the time. The biggest problem is that the EVO line is Sprint exclusive, its not underrated by any means
Lol...I own both. I love both

I agree completely.
I also think the built in kickstand sets the EVO line apart from others . I watch a lot of netflix at work and see other peeps.using books to hold there phone up
I wish it was a bit beefier but its just as strong as the old kick stand and has the built in spring for extra support. I like that u can flip it any way I want and still prop it up
