No USB mass stoage? MTP only? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Just saw this in the Engaget review;
While the One X and S offer options to use USB mass storage or MTP to transfer files, your choices are cut in half with Sprint's version -- MTP is all you have.
Who's got the skinny on this? I'm not familiar to how MTP works.

I actually prefer MTP. Here's more:
http://www.androidcentral.com/ics-feature-mtp-what-it-why-use-it-and-how-set-it

As it says, you can still to mass storage with the MicroSD.
It is pretty simple, though... I think I used it for my old Sansa e250 mp3 player (it gave you the option between the two systems).

The way I read engadget's words was like this:
The internal memory, can only be accessed through MTP.
The SDCARD on the other hand, can be accessed as a mass storage device.

Thanks for the link, it was helpful, and I can understand why they would want to go that route, but what I got from that link is that there's no difference, in practice for the end user, between the two. Meaning even with MTP, you plug it into your computer, and you can still access and move files around. Did I get that right? Does it open as another drive on the computer like USB mass storage does? In fact, would it open as two drives - one for the internal memory, and another for the sdcard?

I read it the same way, I was just hoping that I wouldn't be locked out of the internal memory, unless I used the phone itself (if that makes sense).

If the internal memory is going to be laid out in a similar way to my transformer, then one option is to use samba filesharing and set up the internal storage partition as a share. This is of course going to require root but as i understand it the issue with the one x (and maybe this one) is the bootloader unlock and not simple superuser permissions. I have my transformer set up where when its connected to my home wifi network both the internal storage and the microsd card is shared as samba shares and i just transfer files in to internal storage using that.

Dropbox comes pre-loaded on the phone. You can also sync with Google Drive or a similar service.

I'm not sure which ROM you are using (probably stock), but with my Venom Viper4G 3.14 ROM, I have USB mass storage for the following:
system: NO
sdcard: NO
sdcard2 (ext_sd): YES
However, I have to do 2 things:
1. Disable USB debugging
2. toggle USB File Sharing to Disk Drive (NOT HTC Sync Master)
It's my understanding that Jewel (the HTC Evo 4G LTE) does not allow for mounting system and sdcard(1). In contrast, my HTC One X allows for mounting both system and sdcard, and it does so with USB Debugging enabled. The One X also has a Charge Only mode, but Jewel cannot.

Does USB Debugging enable USB Mass Storage? I believe it does on Gingerbread. I've read reports it doesn't on ICS though.

It does not sadly.
Why there's no mass storage is beyond me. Hopefully a FW update (probably in early autumn) will fix it.

Unfortunately not. Google moved from UMS to MTP with Honeycomb because UMS locks out the storage to the phone when it's plugged into a computer.
I've never heard of this being an actual problem for anyone. You've only got it plugged in for a set period of time.
There's much more on it here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...behind-galaxy-nexus-lack-of-usb-mass-storage/

Hi, I went to setting, more, USB utilities, this is where my problem starts.
My phone say, "USB is connected. Remove the cable." but my phone isn't connected to the cable!
Any suggestions on what to do?

If you are having a rooted phone, there are StickMount from chainfire, Alt Mounter and SGS3 easy UMS that will allow you to connect the android in Mass Storage Mode.
Can someone post a link for SGS3 easy UMS because download keeps failing from site and Google didn't help.

[APP] [v1.1] Mount external microSD card as USB mass storage
Stick Mounter has nothing to do with UMS.
Alt Mounter requires a helper service on the computer and can only provide FTP access, no real mass storage.
Here's what you can run on the Terminal (the Helper app only runs the commands for you; easier to use)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27282116&postcount=58
So has anyone actually tried SGS3 easy UMS? If it works will the host on my car stereo, tv etc recognise it and is there any system side effects I should know about.
If you don't trust the app (the commands really work =D ), get 'Gscript lite' in Google Play and add the corresponding parts as 2 different scripts which you then put on your homescreen for easy access.
That will do exactly the same for you.
Whether it works with car hifi etc depends on your devices. A user 'Siran' reported that his car-stereo took some time to recognize it and the playback had hiccups, but at least the last issue could be attributed to the SDcard not being unmounted in the phone before mounting it on the computer.
Currently the app uses the 'old method' while my script correctly mounts/unmounts to prevent such issues.
The side effect is the same as always; that particular card is not mounted and available in the phone as long as it's mounted as mass-storage on external devices. However that should not be a real issue. No negative side effects are known or likely to exist.

Well, isn't possible then to use it simultaneously from the phone and the usb? What does this app stand for then?
Multi Mount SD-Card and MountUSB Widget
It is, check the "--- BELOW ..." lines in my link.
However it WILL cause data corruption and data loss and might even cause the SDcard's filesystem to be damaged beyond repair.
What you do is use the same filesystem in 2 distinct locations which individually write on it.
To understand how that causes an issue, you'll have to get a basic understanding of a filesystem; they actually work like a science book.
You have an index listing all directories and files aswell as their relation to each other and where on the SDcard the file is stored.
Now if a file is modified the index is changed and then the file added, changed or deleted.
So far, so wel.
If you now mount it on 2 locations (mind you: filesystems don't know about that, so each location thinks it is the sole one accessing it) and work from 2 locations on the same data you have a rather high chance that one operating system will eventually overwrite or alter data without the other one knowing about it.
If the index is too damaged you'll not only loose some files but potentially all filenames and folders. Applications like Recuva can recover most of the files (at least usually) but it won't be pretty, easy and complete.
Simply don't do it. There is a reason why noone implements it
Just tried SGS3 easy UMS on my Tv and Dvd player through their host and worked fine with music, videos and images, and i'll check my car stereo tomorrow, so thanks d4fseeker.

You mean OTG (USB On the GO). I though it was for both OTG and MSC.
Last night, due to the wonders of MTP, it took me nearly 2 hours to transfer 2gb of data from my S2 over to the S3, with many popup interruptions delaying the transfer.
God I hate MTP's speed with many small files. But I guess it could be worse if they locked the filesystem down.

Disk drive mode

BASICALLY INTERNAL DRIVE READS AS CD-ROM AND NOT AS A PARTITION - HOW DO I FIX THIS?
Hey
Disk drive mode is killing me
I was one of the first to get this phone - I like HTC products
But ever since I received this phone I cannot access my internal storage when I plug it into disk drive mode. Why is this and how can I fix it?
I thought both internal and external are plug and play ready (meaning no driver needed to access to info), But for some strange reason my internal 9 gbs will not come up, my external is fine.
I would like to fix this issue today (searching all over the web for the answer) but I am trying to set up a wireless syncing with my phone and I am going to be using my external sd as my media and files and my internal for android system stuff.
I am thinking about formatting my internal memory but I need to first take the info out of it.

Replace Virtual CD on the HTC EVO 4G LTE
Every now and then, a mod so unique pops up that it bears closer examination. For HTC EVO 4G LTE owners, a mod such as this has appeared. When booted into a Sense ROM and connected to a PC, one will notice that the device mounts as two drives. One is the internal storage, and the other is a CD-ROM. Yes, a CD-ROM. Naturally, upon discovering this, the first step is to see if it can be used for something else. As it turns out, it can be.
XDA Recognized Contributor closeone has discovered that there is a file on the EVO LTE called PCTOOL.ISO, which is what causes the EVO LTE to show up as a CD-ROM when it’s plugged into a PC. Closeone explains why it is there and what can be done about it:
There is a file named PCTOOL.ISO inside the /system/etc directory that normally contains the HTC Sync Manager Software. By replacing that ISO with another, it’ll mount that one instead. Because there isn’t too much room to spare in the /system partition, the file should probably be kept relatively small.
There are a number of things users can put in place of the HTC Sync Manager Software, although not a whole lot of things have been tested yet. In theory, though, quite a few useful tools can be placed here, as closeone says:
1. ROM Developers can include a package that contains a copy of the ADB and Fastboot executables within their ROM. ADB would be useful while the device is on; Fastboot would probably have to be copied to the computer.
2. Because the ISO is mounted as Read-Only media, it could be incredibly useful for field technicians who need to run portable software, without the risk of being infected with a virus on the host machine.
Being able to run portable software without thread of virus is definitely something anyone could benefit from. Aside from being one of the more unique mods on XDA, having functionality like this on the EVO LTE can lead to various possibilities.
To learn more, check out the original thread."

I think you can use a program called SGS3 Easy UMS or something like that - but it will only work for SD and when UMS mode is active the phone can not access the SD. Also there is a 'trick' where you sometimes need to stop the media scanner for the program to get exclusive access.

Yes, because the same card is used for the OS, and "internal SD" as we know it is just a folder on it. So it cannot be mounted in UMS because that would mean unmounting the OS

Let's forget for a moment about the internal storage. Let's focus on the uSD.
My recovery (CWM 6.0.2.7 + PhilZ Touch 3) can let me see the uSD as USB mass storage.
What would it be the difficulty to do the same under all these ROMs?
How can a user space application (SGS3 Easy UMS) circumvent an underlying system limitation?
I would like just to understand, not to criticize, of course!
I don't know why the external SD cannot be mounted as UMS right out of the box. Probably because they didn't want to use different standarts at the same time - MTP for internal, UMS for external

That's among the most puzzling questions for this otherwise wonderful smartphone. NOne seems to know what's the technical difficulty.

"They" who? The base OS is either by Samsung or by some Android community (like CyanogenMod) that seems to be unrelated to the Easy UMS author.

Hmmm ... do you mean that with "dual storage" device Google code is not contemplating the possibility to provide access to the uSD as a USB mass storage, while doing it with single storage devices?
My old Sensation XE running CM 10.1 was working fine with no need of any extra software ...
This seems to be not less than weird!
I'm saying that they didn't want to have two different standards at the same time - MTP and UMS, as that could be confusing for some users, so they left it for the devs. That's just pure speculation.
They started doing that pretty recently, hence your Sensation has UMS built-in.

It looks like this is something they do only with dual storage devices. CM v10.1-nightly on the Sensation works fine.
Honestly, I don't like it. The userland app delivers lower transfer speeds.
And, most important, it doesn't work any more with my car stereo as it used to do with a single storage device.
I personally think this is a great mistake done by Google or whoever else.
AFAIK, Sensation doesn't have this new method of storage allocation, that's why it has UMS.
I've found this (I have no windows at home).
It sheds more light on this topic.
Maybe I'm badly wrong, but my idea is that devs just went completely bulls*it with UMS. My not-so-humble opinion.
USB mass storage protocol was a block-level protocol. What this meant was that a partition could not be mounted on two different systems at the same time. Each partition that needs to be mounted on a computer must be unmounted from the phone first. This would be impossible on a phone with only a single partition, since if the system partition was unmounted, the phone would crash.
To work around this issue, Android phones up until now either had two partitions in the internal memory (like the Nexus S) or had a microSD slot (like the Samsung Galaxy S II). Phones with micro-SD slots would just export the microSD card partitions to the connected computer.
But the Galaxy Nexus only has a single internal partition.

Yes, it says "phones up until now", which is what I said. This doesn't include SGS3
If I understood well, Easy UMS simply makes some changes to the default system configuration in order to restore the "standard" USB mass storage profile for the uSD alone.
If this is the case (please provide any feedback, pleeease) I'd push AOSP for restoring it by default.
I've found a nice "mtpfs" package that would allow me to (kind of) mount the storage. But this is a workaround.

It is very simple to understand - your recovery knows it will never WRITE to uSD at the same time as the UMS program (which exposes the PHYSICAL card as a block device). In a normal ROM that assumption would be fatal and you would soon have fatal results, so instead MTP/PTP was chosen - which exposes the FILE SYSTEM instead of the BLOCK DEVICE.
So somehow Easy UMS circumvents those restrictions ...
In other cases you got the warning that some applications could possibly not work properly because of multiple concurrent accesses.
But now the situation is much more clear, indeed.

Getting rid of MTP/PTP

Please tell me there is some sort of flashable zip to get rid of MTP/PTP.
If I can't get standard USB mode on this S3 I'm getting rid of it, MTP is like the worst way of connected to a PC in my opinion.
All the downsides are not worth not having to mount / disconect the drive.
*Note : I use my phone for my work, MTP makes doing any one job over twice as long as I have to transfer the file to my pc in order to edit it, then I need to send it back.
With USB disk I just edit the file/photo/video directly on the devices drive, huzzah so much time saved!)
I tried SG3 easy UMS but it doesn't disable MTP with the rom I am using.
ive been lookng for ways to get UMS too. Easy UMS is giving me problems. Sometimes it just doesnt work and no drives MTP nor UMS drives show on my PC.
Im on Omega rom with Perseus kernel.
The storage mode has been removed all together as android no longer really supports it. Even Google has done away with it.

That's it. I agree mtp sucks, not working on my Windows 7 computer. Easy ums works well here.
This is where USB OTG comes in handy
Thank you for the replies everyone.
Looks like I'm downgrading to my sensation then
Shall send some dissapointed emails to Google/HTC/Samsung etc though as if they're really trying to make mtp standard that's just silly. (Hell it's bloody useless even for media transfer, I put HD movies on my phone and don't bother optimising them for the phone so they're often rather large files. maximum average transfer I see with MTP is 5MB/s if I use USB disk on my sensation with same SD card I get 15+MB/s)
Shame though as some roms for my note n7000 disable MTP so was hoping the same could be done for the s3 :[
Not a big fan of the emulated SD card as well, just makes finding files in recovery a pain in the arse
If this is the way Android is heading looks like I need to find another smart phone OS D:
One thing that could help me keep the s3 is if I could automate easy UMS so when I connect the phone I get a prompt asking me if I want to mount my sd card. ( if that is already a feature, it doesn't work with slim rom) Don't really care for what ever is on the emulated sd card anyway so don't care if that connects with MTP.
( Please don't suggest I just plug the card into a card reader, I use a alluminium bumper case that bolts on so quick swapping is not possible)

i feel the same way about MTP but it's not that BIG a deal. Easy UMS is a good alternative. i had a Sensation as well and you couldn't even access the internal memory, you could only access the memory stick via flash drive. atleast you can access both internal and external sd card using MTP. just put the files on your ext sdcard and use Easy UMS for quick editing of the files. from there you can move the file to your int sdcard using some type of file manager.

I suppose that is an option thanks for the suggestion.
Going to be a pan in the arse setting all my apps to save things to external sd mind.

USB Mass Storage

Is there anyway to mount the Galaxy S4's SD card as Mass Storage? I don't like using MTP, its too clumsy.
I've searched on Play and found a couple of apps that I thought would work, but didn't. I tried "SG USB Mass Storage Enabler" and "AL Mass Storage Manager", neither of them worked.
The developer of "SG USB Mass Storage Enabler" got it to work for the S3, Note 2, and the S4 for every carrier EXCEPT Verizon. -_-
I guess someone will eventually get it to work for Verizon, but does anyone know of an app or another method that works now?
I do have root, the SD card I'm trying to mount is Sandisk 32 GB.

Just curious, what's clumsy about it? It's functionally superior since the card remains mounted in Android. It is slower, but really, in terms of the steps you take to use it, there is no difference. You plug it in, it shows up in windows, you drag and drop files, you unplug. You may have to choose to exit installer mode depending on the ROM, but you also often have to choose to mount as usb storage as well.

Its slower, yes. This is one of many issues.
I have a lot of macs in my house (trust me I don't like it either) and jumping around from one to another is impossible without the additional software. Yes, I can download it, but I'd rather have the option not to. With the option to mount as Mass Storage, the S4 can play the role of a universal USB stick. It can connect to any computer, regardless of software.
Also, some basic programs (like a folder size freeware I have) will not work with my card unless I take it out of my S4 and insert it using its adapter. This is on windows 7.
I feel like you simply have more freedom with the option to mount as Mass Storage.
Bump
Any ideas at all???

Still nothing???
I've heard a lot of desire for this option specifically for the Verizon S4!
I use a free application, Android File Transfer, to mount my S4 (including SD card) to my Mac, but Samsung Kies has to be uninstalled for it to work. I don't know of a solution for Windows.

It can't be plugged into my car's usb port to play audio directly from the SD card. I know you can use bluetooth, but I like the ease of plug and play.

I did, can you give me a direct link?
Most of the links refer to "SG USB Mass Storage Enabler" which I already stated does not work for Verizon GS4. The dev has not added support for SCH-I545 yet. Stranger yet is the app is now down from Google Play.
Guess Google doesn't like Mass Storage?

Almost a year later...
Is Mass Storage really still not possible? AT&T has it, T-Mobile got it, is Verizon still hopeless?
MTP is a huge step backwards IMO from Mass Storage. It's just way too slow.
