hacking the Camera.apk - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

for those of you who are unaware, Samsung likes to put parental controls on their Camera. youll have limits on when youre allowed to open the camera, such as below 15% battery, during music, while youre in a call (where its bluetooth or not), and during media scanning. on top of these limitations, youll also be faced with a mandatory shutter and focus sound, whether your sound is muted or not.
on all of the previous Galaxy phones, weve been luckily enough to have developers mod the camera.apk to fix these broken implementations. Fr4gg0r on the Galaxy S, and pulser_g2 on the Galaxy S II. who will be the one to mod the Galaxy S III Camera.apk?
anyone up for the challenge?
edit:
ive updated the Camera.apk attached to an odexed version

Can you post the camera.apk here, so that we can try?
I have my SGS3 on preorder here in the Netherlands, so I have 3 weeks to go...

Wonder if we can also discover some hidden gems like the HTC Sensation? They managed to churn 10mp shooter to 20mp. =O

Can some one give it a full manual mode so we can set f stop and shutter speeds including ISO manually.
I so want an app like this.

If support for the reported 120fps the hardware supports could be implemented, that would be legendary. I don't care what resolution it drops to really, but for me it would be extremely useful.

120fps, youd probably need a custom camera app for that, not a modded one
i know Fast Camera in the market can do some impressive stuff, even on SGS2

Just turn on vibrate or mute from the pulldown bar and you'll have no shutter sound.

I find it almost concerning that the pics form my S3 are only 1.5mb filesize, my S2 they were twice that and with hte old GB modded camera apk they were nearer 6mb
the pics like great but i cant help feeling that I am not geting as much detail as is capable?

Lot of good replies.. id like to See a 60fps at 720p which should be possible since the iphone 4s has it and we have the same sensor

I've been trying all day. It installs but the 3D can't be turned off and you can't take a photo. Has HDR and Panorama though

Yes it will make it comparable because camera apps control the quality of the camera.

It's been talked about many times that the reasons our pics aren't as good as they could be is software related . So with my very limited knowledge on the subject I think it would be in the telnet of possibilities.

This would be great if it's even possible. It may help produce better quality photos and obviously it also has the extra options.

If you want a better camera , I am sorry to say you will need to buy a stand-alone.
what dont you like about it? I think its pretty damn good.
Are you using a custom ROM? I know some of them mess with the camera in a bad way.
Coming from an iPhone 4 (which I loved taking pictures with) the GS2 is so much better. Especially when using an alternative camera app such as Camera Zoom FX.
Hell, the images look on par with pics taken with my fiancees 4s. The dof and fov loom better on the 4s. But, the gs2 has better color accuracy and sharpness. The flash is also much better.

Yeah, this happens to me as well. I rarely change the settings, but it is kind of annoying.
i like the camera on this phone, nice colors and clarity.
Well the main difference between a 5 MP camera on the Captivate and the 8 MP on this phone is the size of the picture, nothing more. And yeah, the Captivate had an epic camera already, and at such high numbers, I guess the jump isn't that high...

The Captivate did have an excellent camera, however taking presentable quality indoor shots under
normal lighting conditions day or night was a impossibility due to the Captivate's lack of flash.
(not to mention that outdoor dawn or night shots of people were impossible without flash)
I have to agree that i'm disappointed in the camera. A few things i notice:
- the captivate seems to handle incandescent and "soft white" CFLs a lot better.
- while it's nice having a flash.. it's just too bright. wish there was a way to dim in in software
- when i make EV adjustments: there seems to be almost no noticeable difference between 0 and +2. -2 how ever is a fairly drastic change (as it should be).
- when set to spot meter on the captivate, i could aim at the darker parts of a subject to get the image brighter.
- the front camera seems to deal with warm lights better than the main.
So far, i suspect that there might be a max shutter speed somewhere and that's why doing +EV doesn't work in low light.
When i have time, i will try various test shots.
One test i should also try is to use the digital zoom, so the flash is farther away from the subject.
Another thing i notice is i feel the screen is overly saturated and dark compared to the captivate when both are set to auto.
the only thing I agree with is that the LED flash is very bright at times. Otherwise, the camera is top notch. If you need a better camera, get a standalone.

Galaxy S3 Software

So anyone think it'll be possible to port many of Galaxy S III's features to the S II? I mean most of the stuff sounds like software (S Voice, pickup to call, video picture in picture, etc. etc. etc...)
Thoughts?

I don't see the point in pickup to answer unless you regularly just leave your phone laying around. I personally always keep it in my pocket so I don't see the reason for it. Video picture in picture sounds cool though.

wouldn't that be software control of the hardware (camera)? I don't think it's some special hardware in the front camera.

Actually the 2.0MP SGS2 front camera has slightly better resolution than the 1.9MP front camera of the SGS3.
TW and the TW framework from the SGS3 would need to be back-ported to the SGS2 for the new Samsung apps to run correctly, if at all.
--L.
The only way to get these features is to have TouchWiz since its so deeply rooted into everything on the SIII.
I imaging at least some of it could but will probably take the Devs a little while to iron things out.

I thought that was neat, I use GoSms so I have the call button right there if we cant port it.
The one thing that I would like ported over to our phone is the zero shutter lag.
The S beam or w/e on the Galaxy S3 just seems to use a combination of Wi-Fi Direct and NFC, and apparently allows for transfer of a 1GB file in less than 5 minutes. Can't find out whether it's a new hardware thing, or whether it's just the connectivity of NFC with the transfer being done over Wi-Fi direct or something or another. Either way, some epic stuff.
I would love to have the new touch wiz ported over. I love the interface, and the overall new look and lock screen.

This is a hardware issue not a software issue. The only way to do this is if you were to strip out the camera on your sgs 2 with the s3 one. And thats including the miracle that you don't f*ck up your phone!

You sure? From what it sounds like, the cameras in the S2 and S3 are identical (we won't know for absolute certain of course until S3 comes out and someone takes it apart, but everything seems to point towards the cameras being the same). The zero-shutter lag seems to me to be a software thing; hell, I thought the zero-shutter lag was something advertised as being part of ICS, as though it would be available to all ICS-enabled phones and not just the GNex which has a worse camera than ours.
EDIT: This article also seems to suggest it's a software improvement (though it doesn't actually clearly say whether the shutter-lag is hardware or software based).
On another note, I would absolutely *LOVE* it if the SGS3 software stuff got ported over

Is Camera Zoom FX any good for SGS3?

Hello guys.
For starters, I'm not quite sure if this is the proper place for this topic, but since I'm not posting the app or providing any usefull information in the OP I guess Q&A will do.
I'm wondering if Camera Zoom FX is any good, if it excels the stock GT-i9300 camera in any other way than giving the possibility to add frames and some basic effects.
A friend of mine used to have this app in his old android phone and while he was amazed by all the "fancy stuff", It was quite not clear for me if the application actually does improve the way that the device take/store the picture. I refer to the people of this forum because since my buddy's phone was not a SGS3, the features or performance of the application may differ.
TL;DR: Does Camera Zoom FX improve the way the camera works?
Thanks.-
PS: Also, feel free to give some insight about any worthy feature I might be missing.
Nope, you will not get any better image quality... In fact I even think stock camera will give you better images

Yes, I saw the offer and decided to ask first because I don't have an International working card (I'm from Argentina), so if I wanted to buy such an app I would have to bother someone else in order to borrow an international working one. Google Wallet wont accept my debit card
If there is no real improvement I guess it's not worth the effort, even if it's only USD 25 cents.-
Bought it last time when Google offered it at usd 0.10
But other than the fancy stuff, it doesn't make the pictures better quality.

[Mod] Sense 5 Silent Camera (No shutter/focus etc sounds)

This is for sense5 roms only...
I modded the Camera.apk, changing all the .ogg files to silent ones. I personally hate the noises the camera app makes so it's now quiet.
Just flash the zips in recovery, works like a charm. Or extract and replace /system/app/Camera.apk
Normal disclaimer:
I didn't mess up your device if anything happens blah blah by flashing you agree that you're stupid enough to flash things other people made. You assume any and all responsibility for anything that messes up. (Or just SUPER Trusting!!!!!exclamationmark!!!)

Obviously you flash silent cam for silence, noisy cam for noisy(aka revert to normal cam).
Edit:
Oh yeah IN SOME AREAS NO SHUTTER SOUND IS ILLEGAL! You are also going to check your local laws before flashing and you are agreeing not to use this for any illegal/perverted reasons.

The OG camera does but the modified one for the newest version of newts rom doesn't.
whats teh diff between OG camera and the one in newts? is there any one that can get 8mp resolution?
I believe I am by installing a file posted by dock in newts thread on page 224. It is the 4.2 photosphere camera. Along with taking 3264x2448 it also works with the new gallery. I believe that is 8mp. I really want that slow motion fix in stock camera. Or even better the photosphere camera above. This DNA is lucky to have so many knowledgable people working on it. I am a lucky bystander. Hopefully I will be able to help soon.
