[Q] ICS Update - SGS 2 Rooted 6 months ago - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thanks for reading - I'm a noob.
I came here to learn about rooting devices over 6 months ago and decided to have a go at rooting my SGS 2 to remove the bloatware and speed it up a bit.
Performance has been great - I left the stock firmware because the OS/ROM was not a concern to me. I simply flashed the kernel with CF Root: CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.tar
Now I am led to understand I would need to flash back to my stock kernel to allow the OTA update for ICS - the only issue is I cannot find any available downloads for I9100TDVKF4 - Telstra's stock kernel.
Now I read somewhere a reply to a similar question was "just flash it with a new rom, I dont know why you want to go to stock" - Well I want to update to the official ICS. I was under the impression that would be available a long time ago and never was. I just want to....
Please can anyone help me to point out where I can find that kernel? perhaps there is a different kernel i could use?!
Is there any ICS firmware I would be able to download and flash to the ROM using Odin whilst keeping my phone rooted?
I found this place really helpful in how to root and now I just hope someone can help me get onto ICS!
Cheers

No only custom rooted firmware .
Try Checkfus for your stock firmware download and flash via Odin .
Dont confuse yourself with kernels without understanding .
ICS on Checkfus or Kies for your phone install otherwise wait until your provider releases .
or flash your original saved firmware that will overwrite root .

Thanks for taking the time to reply mate....
Dont confuse yourself with kernels without understanding - dont worry ive been trying not to but it seems thats the only thing i changed on my phone when i rooted it so i was lead to believe i needed to change that back...
My provider has just released new version of ICS but i cant actually install it once ive downloaded it over the air it only gets to 8% then reboots itself and i believe thats because the phone is rooted...
or flash your original saved firmware that will overwrite root - I dont know if i backed it up correctly on the guide i was using!!! The only thing i backed up was the apps using titanium backup so now i feel im stuck!

Use check fus down loader and get the official ics ROM.
It's under i9100t Australia/telestra
Problem solved.

[Q] ROM

Hi,
Can anybody tell me if i root my s2 (currently on KF3 firmware) with cf method and flash stock kernel, will i be able to install new ROMS like litening etc,how ?, and will i be able to come back to my stock firmware and kernel, and how ?
thanks in advance !
You can flash any Custom firmware anytime, without root. And you can go back to Stock firmware and kernel anytime.
Regards.
so if i root(by a method you earlier told me),can i also use any rom on that ?if yes then how and also can you please tell me how to come back to stock rom(before flashing with custom rom) state ?
You just need to add the .tar file of the Custom firmware in PDA section of Odin and flash, same for Stock ROM.
Regards.
you can root your phone as ihappy said but use the threads on the forums to find the stock kernels and roms that suit you. and i mean by what region you at. most of the custom roms come with root anyway so i would not worry about rooting. the thing is though whenever you do flash always make backup. first time i flashed i did not do backup and i was panicking on how to go back to stock.but thankfully the guys in this community are the best around and helped me out. hope my post helped in anyway

[Q] software update not available in kies?

hello!
I have a little problem with my phone/kies. so I wanted to upgrade my OS to ICS (it says ICS is available on the gsm arena website, can't link) after hours of trying to make it connect (turns out USB debugging had to be off) I found out that apparently there is no software update available. screenshot:
OK, I can't post pictures yet, so type the imgur website and add /TsfuB.png if you want to see a screenshot.
it's rooted, and the only other weird thing is that upon booting, there is always a yellow warning triangle on the first screen, since I bought it, before root or anything. I got it "1.5 handed" (someone got it from an "unwanted upgrade", like a reward you get from a company with points and such, didn't want it, and sold it quite cheaply with it only having been turned on once. the battery was still in it's packaging)
I also have some experience from upgrading ROMs the hard way, with my Toshiba folio 100, but I'm a little more scared with this phone, witch is actually useful with its stock ROM.
current android version according to settings menu: 2.3.4. is this the latest release you can upgrade from Kies?
I hope I have provided enough info
thanks in advance!
Read the stikies guides for using Odin to flash the stock ROM. you will learn every thing to fix your phone in 1 hour max.

thanks, but is there no way to do it with Kies? I'd prefer to use that, but if it's really necessary, I'll use Odin.

depends of the firmware you have on that phone is correct for your region and you say upon booting you have to yellow triangle means the user has flashed something already on it as you have root already guessing it has a insecure kernel or CF Root kernel if want to flash stock roms check out Intratech thread here and if you want a custom stock rom for ics go here and use neats all is stock with root and no fancy stuff done click here!!
hope this helps p.s also kies is **** only use it to add usb drivers then remove it more hassle then its worth and can cause issues with odin

Are they saying an upgrade for your individual phone ????
Check your phone provider has upgraded to ICS ..
Kies failing then if the firmware is on the server use CHECKFUS to download and install .
Not on the server then your phone has not yet been upgraded ,

the phone was not rooted when I got it, and I'm not sure about a custom ROM, it looks normal.
also, I live in South Africa, and apparently you need a separate ROM for that. all I found for south Africa under officials ROMs is the following:
XWKF3
Firmware info
PDA:XWKF3
PHONE: XXKE7
I have no idea what those seemingly random capital letters and numbers mean. it doesn't give the android version, so...

From Gingerbread to ICS

I just bought a bell galaxy note. It is unlocked and I am using it with a Mobilicity sim. Can someone tell me what would be the best way of upgrading to ICS?
Thanks.
There is a sticky right at the top of this section that will help get you started.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
My sig is what I used, look it all up and see if its what you want to do (stock ROM or modded) and PM me for help. I'm a noob to rooting but I can get you started.
Is there any way to get OTA bell ICS update now that I am with Mobilicity?
Is your phone rooted? If not you should receive the update by OTA also. Or if the update is available by using Kies, you can get it that way.
Not sure if you got your answers ...
but I have my Note with ICS and with Jelly Bean OTA ................ and steps seems pretty easy if u READ and PAY ATTENTION and follow them...
here are few things that I did ...
1) download Samsung KIES ( if you have already - make SURE ITS UPDATED)
http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/
2) Download and install CWM ( i used the GUI version ... yes am lazy about doing three fingure boot etc ,,,)
3) Download and keep ICS rom of choice (( search and read here , lots and lots of them ..... like kid in candy jar!!)
one I suggest =
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765316&highlight=cwm+gui
The above ( 3) link will show you most resources and things to do
and sit back and ENJOY !! note = Pure amazin in RAW form , and let loose with some of the fancy ROMS
you can spend hours and hours << ah remember the days of Andriod 1.6 and 3am morning still flashing ROMS !!LOL))
Hope this helps
say thanks if it did
I did all of the above. I rooted the phone and then flashed CWM followed by super user. I then chose FJ ICS rom and flashed it as well. However, although everything went well and I was able to boot the phone to ICS 4, I have lost contact with my service provider (mobilicity).
Just so that you know, I bought this unlocked phone which came with Gingerbread and everything was working fine.
I have restored the phone back to the stock ROM but I still cannot see the Mobilicity network.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to get the phone back to its original state?

[Q] JB Update on GT-I9300, rooted, flash via odin and CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0

Hi, and apologies as this is probably the 10,000th post on JB updates. I have searched etc, but just wanted a sanity check to see if I have this right.
As the title says, I have a UK GT-I9300 (BTU) that was rooted in my eagerness when I dumped ios (so used to Jailbreaking, I didnt even think about it). I'll admit I didnt think things through at the time (or read up enough!)
So, I rooted the phone using Odin and CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0, and now JB is upon us. I now know that I can't just use Kies or OTA (unless Ive got it wrong), so I just need to use Odin to flash a download (from one of the various Firmware sites) of the JB update for my particular version ?
If I want it to appear as unmodified, I need to use Triangle Away ?
Have I got this correct, or am I missing a piece of the jigsaw, or do I need a pre-rooted JB ?
Cheers for any help, as I'd rather not stuff this up
If I need to flash the stock rom via odin first, I'll have to find it, as all the links I found are dead now :fingers-crossed:

Some (possibly ignorant) questions about upgrading from Spain 4.1.1 to 4.1.2

Hi, I recently got an international Galaxy S3 - my first Android phone. It's an unlocked Spain model (not tied to any carrier), and I upgraded it from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 as soon as I took it out of the box. I've been rooted through Chainfire's ExynosAbuse since it was released. I've never used Kies; the only update I've had was done OTA.
I wasn't planning on messing around with ROMs for quite a while, but I considered installing a 4.1.2 ROM after seeing the Premium Suite announcement. I figured I'd wait however long it took for Samsung to release 4.1.2 to Spanish phones... but reading that the XXELLA upgrade fixes the sudden death issue - something which I've been quite worried about - I kind of want to just install it, assuming there's no adverse effects. And if the eMMC bug causes damage to the chip over time, I would like to install the hotfix as quickly as possible... (I do have the affected chip and FW rev)
I have been reading up quite a bit in the GT-I9300 sections here, and I think I've got an okay picture of how stuff goes, but I do want to make sure before I do anything with my expensive phone! There is an overwhelming amount of information and it's hard to keep track of everything. Anyway, here's what I was wondering...
- What's the best and safest way to flash the 4.1.2 ROM? It seems like I can use Odin, Mobile Odin, Heimdall or a recovery... but I assume I would need to flash the latter through one of the other three? I use Linux, so I would prefer to use Heimdall over Odin (if it's not more risky). Is a recovery required for custom ROMs, or is it just for convenience? Is it safer than the other methods?
I should also mention that if I used Mobile Odin, I would have to use the lite version as paid Play apps aren't available where I live and I don't have a credit/debit card anyhow.
- Would doing this get me the same result as installing it through Kies or OTA if it was officially released for Spain? (eg. the properly updated kernel/bootloader/modem/whatever else...) Including the famous eMMC fix...
- Are there any adverse effects to installing a ROM belonging to a different country? I think I'd probably end up going for the UK version.
- Would I keep my installed apps, settings, etc like I did with the 4.1.1 OTA update?
- I may end up installing a custom kernel later on (possibly Perseus or something of the like); is there anything I should take into account for this, like what method I use to flash it? And would I lose my data through doing this?
I hope I haven't asked anything too dumb, lol. Thanks very much!
