[Q] Help needed for a newbie - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Sorry if this is the wrong section and has possibly been covered many times before but I am new to this Android stuff and wanted instant answers due to not understanding things covered in posts and threads on the forum.
The phone:
I have a Sony Xperia x10i which was previously on Orange but has now been unlocked. It had Gingerbread 2.3 before but now has been what I assume is "debranded" and is now 2.1 (I dont know what)
The Problem:
I have tried to update via SonyPC companion where it shows "update avaliable" as I go to proceed it fails after clicking the next button (which sometimes comes up hidden in the dialog box)
I want to update the android market app to GooglePlay but due to being stuck on 2.1 it wont allow it unless 2.2 upwards.
Using Google - i typed in the build number which seems to throw back that it is a Greek rom of some kind?
Final note:
I want to keep my phone up to date without destroying the software or installing custom roms, basically keeping it original and simple. I want the latest firmwares etc so that it is all up to date. Also I would like to keep it unlocked without having to shell out to get it unlock again after it has been done once.
Hope someone can help me out. I can answer questions if more info needed.
Many thanks in advance.
(UK using o2 SIM)

I dont know 100% on what to do because im certainly no professional, but in the system phone menu at the bottom does it definatly show Android 2.1?

It says firmware 2.1 -update1 if that means anything?

It needs to mod the build.prop file to set device as global generic one and update with PC companion.
But it requires root first.
Evenit is very strange, almost all of the x10i got 2.3.3 fw.
Or second solution - download 2.3.3 stock fw and flash it via flashtool

Thanks for the reply.
Can you explain a bit better as I dont understand sorry.
Did you mean I have to modify the build somehow?
I thought about the new rom solution but not sure if my device network unlock would still be there after installing new roms. Can someone point me to a simple guide on installing a new rom etc.

You must be sure if what you want first
If you want to install a custom ROM, you will only need to root your device, install recovery and flash whatever ROM you want.
Or you can flash the stock 2.3.3 with Flashtool (thing thats the easiest solution for you) update and decide for custom roms later.
You have X10i rignt? Not X10a yes?
After you will decide what you want will provide further information.

I think I will go with this option first and try the roms later when i have more understanding on what i am doing
Definately x10i. (what is the difference between the "i" and "a" by the way for interest)
I think i have tried rooting by using superoneclick and it is rooted (any way to double check?)
I appreciate your help a lot with all this..

The X10i is version for europe and parts of asia and so on. X10a is mainly from USA and Canada (other GSM module). Also exists SO-01B which is a Japanese version of X10i.

Yes on google play exists app called Root check However it is not so important because we dont need a root at this time.

Everytime someone helps you, hit the "Thanks"button below his post, it will give him more good feelings Its a good habit everywhere here on XDA.
So here we go:
1.) Download the Flashtool form here:
http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
2.) Donwload the generic SE WWE 2.3.3 ROM (here from my older post):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26141346&postcount=13
3.) Once complete - extract the file.ftf form ROM archive and place it in Flashtool directory called "firmwares"
4.) Run Flashtool, select Flash, choose Flash Mode (not fastboot) and then follow the onscreen steps
5.) Hint - maybe you will have problems to get your device into the Flash mode, see my post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26135308&postcount=4
Enjoy!

Smashing! I will definately give this a go next week as going away so dont want to screw the phone up before go lol. Will report back when Ive cracked it.

New to all this !

Just got a Sony Ericsson X10 and it has Android 1.6. I want to upgrade to the latest version of android and want to enable features like multi touch.. How do i upgrade my phone? I dont know anything about android and most of the posts here have just confused me
Hi - and welcome..
Go to the Sony Ericsson website and download and install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) to your PC..
Fire that up and follow the onscreen instructions (carefully)..
That will get you upto the latest version of the firmware for your phone..
It may NOT be the latest available firmware though depending on whether your phone is customised by a specific carrier/ network?
If it doesn't upgrade you then look settings and about phone then tell us the country and customisation info in there..
Good luck..
If you're feeling brave you can root it too.. and do a load of other stuff.. (took me a while to build up the courage to get into all that side of it.. but was worth it in the end, cos phone performance can be improved dramatically)!

Greets alamode, congrats on your new X10, and welcome to xda.
First off, it's great to hear that you have at least tried to find a place to start with your Android, and I know it can be rather daunting, as well as time consuming.
- If you're only interested in official Sony Ericsson (SE) Firmwares then you can just simply connect your phone to your computer after having installed PC companion on it
and follow the instructions. This should give you the latest official rendition of Android for the X10 which is 2.1 and includes dual touch.
- If however you wish Custom Firmwares which go well beyond anything that Sony could ever offer than I would recommend after having updated through PC Companion
(above) the next step is to 'Root' your X10 which allows you greater access and control over your device and the ability to 'Flash' (install) the many custom Themes, Apps, and ofcourse Firmwares(ROM)s

Thanks for the quick reply guys !..
Well yeah i heard that rooting/flashing your phone opens up a whole new world for you so im definately interested in that. i've heard Sony ericsson wont upgrade X10 to latest versions of android? Can we still update them after rooting/flashing our device?
Anyways ill update my device first from Sony ericsson then.. After that i'll have to root my device? Since i dont know much about rooting/flashing can someone just guide me as to what that is and what it does? Whats the difference between rooting and flashing?
And thanks guys you lot are helpful !

Um No...
Trying to update but keep getting this : unable to install or start phone software update components
Try doing a repair first then try the upgrade..
For rooting.. go to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906248 download Superoneclick to your pc and run it from there..
Rooting will give you access to the system files so if you start rooting around in there deleting things then it can be dangerous - but you can always reflash/ repair using SEUS.
Rooting will also give you the opportunity to install custom ROMS which you'll find on the Dev sub-forum.
Would also recommend that you install JIT once rooted, as this gives a big performance boost. You'll find that on these x10 forums too.
Alright.. This is so frustrating. Been trying to root my phone all night but not really able to get anywhere.. Here's what i did..
First i finally upgraded to 2.1.. I used another PC and somehow it didnt give me the error i was getting earlier at the other PC. Not sure what was the problem there.
After upgrading to 2.1 i decided to root. First i used the SuperOneClick file to root my phone. After rooting, I installed BusyBox and then kept installing xRecovery but with no luck. xRecovery would just not install !!! I coped the apk file and ran the install from the phone, I got the icon but after getting the icon when it comes to the installing part it just freezes and after a while i get an error which gives me 2 options, Either to force close or to wait. I tried the other method too, the pushing method using X10ModTool and that didnt work either. After lots of tries and after getting extremely frustrated i uninstalled the apps and tried to start fresh.. I unrooted my phone using SuperOneClick and decided to root using z4root. I got the icon in the menu for z4root and i clicked on permanent root.. My phone restarts but i dont see the SuperUser icon anywhere.. If i try to install BusyBox it keeps on saying that its trying to get information..
So, So extremely frustrating !
Oh and i forgot to mention that after upgrading to 2.1, my Phone seems to have become slower while swishing between screens..
Which build number version do you have as the Superoneclick is for 2.1.A.0.435 and 2.0.2.A.0.24.
2.1.A.0.435
Im just not able to get root access ! Ive tried X10 Flash Tool, Ive tried SuperOneClick, Ive tried another software as well.. I just cant seem to get the root access..
I Installed Root checker and everytime after i root i check and it says that you do not have root access.. :S
help !

Install xRecovery and then you can even upgrade your phone to 2.2 there are some good ROMS available on this forum, you can check this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=617
Thanks. Yeah i have xrecovery installed as well.
What is basically a ROM? From my understanding its a customized firmware? If so, Which ones the best at the moment? I cannot compromise on functionality (as in i dont want that i cannot use bluetooth/camera/wifi or some other feature because of the rom). So basically i just want a stable rom in which i dont have any limitations. Also what is the advantage of using another rom anyway?
Thanks !
Okay.. ran a few of those optimizations and stuff and the phone is running a bit better. Can you guys tell me what is a good Benchmark score for Stock 2.1 on x10? im getting 33.4 MFLOPS right now.. is that alright?
I still am experiencing a little stutter in the menus, so i installed LauncherPro and that seems to have taken care of it.. I dont understand why cant i get the stutter to go away in the original home screen?
Lastly, Another problem ive been having.. My mobile is connected via USB but instead of it charging up, It is very very slowly losing charge. It went from 95% to 89% in around 45-60 minutes. Whats that all about?

For me the best 2.1 ROM so far is bluesparks, it is very fast and stable. Everything works in this ROM.
As for a 2.2 ROM, i just love wolfbreak's CM6.1.3 v4.3. Everything works except for the camcorder. For getting the camcorder to work you can download video illusion from the market. The quality wont be as good though. However this ROM is just too good. Too fast and stable with good animations.

Is this the 2.2 Rom you were talking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=945264
Secondly, If i do install this ROM, Will all my applications and everything be deleted? Is there a way to just simply install the ROM and keep everything as it is?

Yeah, that is the 2.2 ROM I was talking about. Make sure you install the correct one depending on your baseband.
In order to keep everything, make a backup of your apps using titanium backup. You can then restore your apps after installing this ROM. Thats what I did.
Wolfbreak has given another way here:

Ah thanks, I might go for 2.1 cause of the camcoder.. Any chance of a fix for it coming in 2.2?

[Q] Root and upgrade?

Ok I just got an x10 that is running 1.6. I know nothing about android phones I was an iphone user so this is very new to me. Do I need to upgrade first or do I need to root it first. Can someone please provide me with the links to the threads I need to do this in? Like I said I am very new to this and I do not want to brick this phone. Also whats the latest version that i can upgrade to where everything works
congratulations on turning away from the darkside!.. There are a few things you can do and it really depends on how far you want to push it..
You can upgrade it then root it and stick largely to the stock ROM - remove any of the junk that you don't need but SE thinks you need.. and install JIT (Just In Time Compiler) to improve performance..
or you can go the whole hog and root it, and flash a custom rom onto it.. this option appears to be slightly riskier - a few people seem to have got very messed up phones doing this - but most (99%?) seem to be okay..
My preference is to upgrade to 2.1 (make sure you've got the dual touch version) - because your in America I assume that you have and X10a - so you'll need to download flashtool to your pc from here. and install the canadian X10a firmware.
probably most of what you want to do is here.
I would recommend you to use the Upgrade Service which is available in Sony Ericsson's website. It has detailed on-screen instructions and I think it is the easiest way to upgrade your phone to the newest 2.1 firmware with dualtouch.
After that, you might find it useful to root your device using binary's flash tool (one-click).
Download the flashtool from Androxyde's thread on the Development forum. Then flash the latest 2.1 FW with the latest baseband and Dual touch. Then use the Root option in the flash tool. Then download Root Explorer app and install XRecovery. At that point you can flash any ROM u want without a PC. That is the easiest wasy to do it and if u follow the directions its foolproof.
Do it all in that order.
Edit: There is no reason to use the SE Update Service if you are going to use the flashtool to root. Everything should be done from the flashtool. And nobody who has followed the procedures has "messed up" their phone by doing any of this. Just dont do anything if you dont know what it is or cant find references on how it works. Because the X10 Bootloader cannot be accessed there is virtually nothing you can do to permanently "brick" your phone, any issues that arise can generally be repaired by restoring a backup or reflashing the FW.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
don't think he'll be able to upgrade using SEUS.. I don't think that America have released the upgrade! worth a try though, unless someone from that part of the world can confirm
Yes att has no upgrade for USA so don't bother with seus except for repairs.

I agree with this. I started this week with an X10a and fully upgraded to 2.1.1 sumting..anyways I did "brick" my phone once but no worries I just reflashed using the remove battery method and flash tool. While I did have everything working my battery died from a full charge overnight. So now I'm using Erick Will's Custom .435+Arc+Timescape. Most stable from what I've read so far.

I got my X10 about a week ago (was free from my Sony Rep) and as soon as I got it, I rooted and flashed 2.1 on it (baseband .54). To root I used android central sideload wonder machine.
To flash 2.1 I used flashtool as stated in an earlier post. Once 2.1 is installed find the ROM you want to run, and use xRecovery to flash it. I personally think CM 6.1.3 is one the better ROMs out there, but find the one that works for you.

I should make it clear that I fully upgraded to latest Rogers fw using pc companion, saw the incredible drain on battery then bricked my phone. :O I was trying to tweak it and I over-tweaked.

Rooting, Flasjing and Skype on 3??

Hello,
so im a noob to all things android and have been reading up a lot, I recently got a SE X10 black version
firmware 2.1 update1
baseband 2.0.46
kernal 2.6.29
so I think I rooted it this morning with using super one click, it did say successfully completed but how do i cjheck if its been rooted? i have a super user icon in my menu, but when i click it its empty and just has written "no apps in list"
secondly i want to know the difference between rooting and flashing.. I understand that rooting gives you su access but why flash? is it simply to get rid of the bloated software? is that the only reason? cause ive been reading that wolfbreaks (spelling?) ROM is best for flashing.. so I want to try that..
One last thing is that I chose 3 as my network provider mainly because they have skype on 3, shich is basically free skype all the time.. so what Im asking if I flash will I lose skype on 3 as well?
Note : skype on 3 and skype are different apps in my menu, skype on 3 connects via the 3 network, skype connects via the internat and my data plan.
Thank you

Look up root checker in android market. That will show you if your phone is rooted.
Rooting is for getting better access if not all access on your phone.
Flashing is for putting software on your phone that the developers make here.
If you want to learn the flashing procedure, say yes and I will help you. I will post guides and links to help you and you will have to use your computer knowledge to figure this out.
As far as skype someone will else will have to answer that. I don't skype.
I hope my info helps. keep posting with questions.
Flashing a wolfbreak's rom will get rid of any pre-installed apps and network branding. If you download the skype for 3 apk from your carriers website then it should work after flashing a custom rom.

[Q][Mini Pro][Firmware]Last Firmware before ICS available anywhere?

Hello,
I am looking for the last pre ICS firmware for my SK17i. I am currently back on 4.0.2.A.0.42 since ICS was not the best performance wise and the notification LED didn't work (please let's not discuss ICS vs. GB here)
So now I wanted to flash the latest pre-ICS firmware which as far as I know is 4.0.2.A.0.69 (only for germany, but that's where I live). Or 4.0.2.A.0.62 which maybe is easier to find. Now I do know about the !PreRooted 4.0.2.A.0.69 in this thread. However I had quite a few problems with aswell as others described in this thread. Most importantly the flashlight wasn't working at all, the keyboard layout was way off (not just qwerty instead of my german qwertz). I'd really appreciate any help in this matter.
Also: I am a complete newb concerning android but I tried my beast to research this before posting
Thanks,
SM
Keyboard layout depends on the firmware region.
Flashlight problem seems to be related to the baseband, I have heard. Even though I kind of doubt it, but still worth of trying.
If you root your .42, you should be able to update via OTA (it means via WiFi and the app Update Centre) to the last 2.3.4 build without loosing root
Thanks Feanor88! I had only opened the update centre once and it told me everthing was up to date (forgot to refresh/recheck via menu).
Now it show's the international 4.0.2.A.0.62 Upgrade. But if I try to install it it reboots a couple of times and then starts up with the old FW and tells me the install was not possible and I should try again. Which I did with the same outcome. Any Idea what could be the hinderance? I'm rooted with CWM installed, bootloader is locked (never touched it).

CWM is the trouble creator. You will need to come back to stock and then try.

Thank you, that did it. Now I'm on the .62 GB firmware which I'm much happier with than ICS. At least now my Sound in Navigon and Skype work correctly, aswell as the notification LED and games like Osmos don't randomly quit

[Q] Newbie : Using custom roms, unlock bl etc.

Hello guys
I want to use certain custom roms and upgrade from my 2.1 ....
I kept reading 10-15 threads but I'm still a bit confused so just in case, i'll ask just to be sure and avoid bricking it.
So, here's the info of my phone :
1. Xpeia X10 Mini Pro U20i
2. Manufacture Date : 10W35
3. Base Band Version : M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006
4. Kernel Verion : 2.6.29
5. Firmware Version 2.1
Now, I posted everything ...
Few questions:
1. Is there a chance of briking it ?
2. In order to install custom ROMS, I need to unlock the bootloader first?
Now ....
I do read the threads fully, but being a noob coming to this .. (not stupid thouh ) .. it's a bit confusing but I will manage to do it .. just need some starting points.
So, anything I should do before flashing the ROM , please enumerate here.
Thanks

First of all, you need to update your firmware, the baseband needs to read 4015 on the end before you install any roms.
Second: There are ROMS that will run fine on your current kernel, so if you choose one of those, there is no need to unlock the bootloader.
If you want to run a ROM that states it needs a custom (usually nAa) kernel, then you do need to unlock your bootloader, otherwise you can't flash the new kernel.
With the 10w35 datestamp you won't get a hard brick with unlocking, but it may still go wrong, depending on some other factors, namely your simlock-certificate.
I would recommend to start with a rom that runs on stock kernel, to get some experience, and do the other things once you feel more comfortable

Thanks man ...
This is exactly the info I needed ... I will start with a stock one, need to find now how to update my firmware.
By the way, is there a way of getting adobe flash ...after update ? If so, is there any ROM you suggest in that matter ?

If I remember correctly Android supported flash since 2.2 frozen yogurt, so any custom roms could run it, you'll just have to find the flashplayer for armv6, there should be a link somewhere on this forum. Try the Mini Themes and Apps section
Never be afraid of flashing. Because you can always recover it. the only tough thing is unlocking the BL. read carefully and pay attention. Goodluck.
PS if you HARD BRICK your phone because you fail to unlock the BL it can still be repaired via JTAG.
