Success in using 3g usb-dongle - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey all, wasn't sure where to place this thread... hope its in the right place.
I plugged in an E1550 3g dongle in the usb slot on the dock. Ran the UMTS Manager app (root needed).
I'm in Portugal, and my 3g provider is Optimus Kanguru. So, for portuguese users, all you need to change is the profile to 'other', and the APN to 'kanguru-portatil'... keep DNS at 8.8.8.8... and just start it by clicking 'Verbindung herstellen!'
The E1550 dongle wasn't supported, but it still worked.
Others from different providers/countries should be able to use it too. Just search for what APN configuration you might need.
For me, entering websites happens pretty fast. I've seen in another thread where a user could surf but not download files/apps etc... I tested that, and yes, apparently the only thing you can do is surf the net, which i guess isn't bad at all.
Maybe there's a tweak to be able to download and use other apps...
Oh, almost forgot. I'm on stock .21 (rooted, but not unlocked)
Edit_1:
The app was updated, and now the interface can be in portuguese! Thanks Jörg Köhler (this app's creator)!
Edit_2:
You can use Mobile Counter App to measure the data traffic of your connection.
Other Info: Tested speed using OpenSignal app, and i got a ping of 319ms, max download of 2mbps, and 0 (zero) upload speed -.-
The things you can do/use with UMTS Manager's connection are:
- Youtube App (or other apps of the sort, like the dailymotion app)
- Surf Web
- Search Apps in Google Play (but not download/upgrade apps)
- Google Maps (but it cannot pinpoint your location)
- Google Earth
- Receive and send mail with the gmail app
(But you can only do it when the app opens... if you want to receive again, close the gmail app with the task manager, and open it again.)
(To send email, just write the mail you wanna send and click send. then you gotta close the gmail app with the task manager and open it again... it will then send the mail you wrote)
- You can download stuff from dropbox using the dropbox app!
That's about it for now... need more testing.
Would appreciate tremendously if anyone knew how to make it so we could download/upload freely as if we were using wifi.

probably only leaves port 80 open (html/web). Might be a way to forward all ports to 80?

My E261 is OK too.
I think all Huawei dongle can be supported, because all Huawei dongle have same AT command.

Thank you very much, sir!
I was trying to find out how to use a 3G dongle (Huawei E153) with my TF201 and your post solved the problem. I downloaded the UMTS Manager, made settings for my operator (Saunalahti Prepaid, Finland) and it works perfectly well
Thanks again, I found your information very valuable.

T-Mobile.mk (my provider) gave me an HUAWEI E173
spend a week looking for answer or "how to" for this
nothing there ...
(double eek) Just put mine Prime to re-charge
Jörg Köhler (the creator of UMTS Manager **root**) stated that it'll work ... so double eager to try this sw
Google Translate gave me
Code:
This is a UMTS stick on Asus Prime Transformer can be used.
As UMTS Stick have been tested, type:
HUAWEI E 160
[B]HUAWEI E 173[/B] [SIZE="2"](that's mine)[/SIZE]
HUAWEI E220
HUAWEI K3715
until I try it my guess is that it'll work
if it's working
Hell Yaeh for @eddymonti (OP) and Jörg

HUAWEI E 173 3G usb dongle from my T-Mobile.mk is not recognizable
any one with any thing .... much appreciated
I was referring to this method particularly http://techwalls.com/gadget/3g-usb-asus-transformer/
probably we gonna need some more experienced users

Not working on Orange Cameroun.
ohh they joy of being an aid worker !
Can't wait to go back to my LTE dongle in Canada !

Compatible with MiFi?
You guys mentioned that it is compatible across all Huawei Dongles. Would that also mean it is compatible with Huawei Pocket MiFis? (ex. Huawei E587). Thanks!

Isn't MiFis like the E587 a portable hotspot? I think that you just need wifi for those. This app is just for usb connected dongles.

Would this kill my att USA unlimited data? ... how are packets sent out....

Huawei E353 works
Just tried this and have got my Huawei E353 working but have the same as some previously stated problems.
Browsers seem to work fine and play store browsing but again cannot get some apps to connect.
My wifi is rubbish on the boat I work on, so the extra browsing speed while in mobile range is fantastic!

Hi pal,
Sorry but I know nothing about Hotspot Shield neither would I trust anyone to secure my data on my behalf when I can do it myself, especially if american!
Maybe this could help you, not only Androidwise: you could use it for all your web activities (BTW what's your country?)
You can use "SSH Tunnel Beta" from the market.
As you cannot access it I am posting the apk.
Or you could search SSHTunnel(BETA) v1.6.0beta.apk on google and you might find it.
Works like a charm, I use it to encrypt and to change my IP, whatismyip.org correctly reports the IP of the ssh server.
You need an ssh server to act as a proxy obviously.
(alternative is an proxy but firemole is not available on android)
All you need is a linux box in a datacenter.
Provider gives you root and password that you should change to something super secure, adduser name, disable root logins (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) and a few more things to be secure or if you like to risk.. just use the provided rootassword on your ssh tunnel app
I hire from www.leaseweb.com which is in NL or DE, you can get a VPS linux from many providers and they cost under 10 euro / month or get superb dedicated servers like I do if you have a use for them . Bandwidth is great but depends from the network in you country and also on the backbones used but you hardly care about this others are www.lowendbox.com and www.vps4you.it that offer 30 day trial
Hope this helps and doesn't just confuse you... But if you live in a country where things are banned I guess this would upgrade your web freedom
Now lets get back to work
G
PS you could also use it on your wireless router (get a www.dd-wrt.com / opnwrt / pfsense capable router) and you're done house/firm-wide
Thanks alot for the info mate
I'll see what I can do and report back..
Really appreciate your help
PS. btw am from Sudan..

Any Hack For Region Protected Apps?

To make a long story brief, does anyone know of a hack that would fool a region protected app?
I downloaded the APK for the BBC I Player from mediafire and I opened it via Astro whilst connected to my UK proxy and also used a location spoofer app. When I tried to play content a message pops up saying it's only available in the UK. I then tried using my VPN account and got the same result.
Does anyone know of any way to make that app think i'm in the UK or is it impossible?
I did search XDA and as far as I can see is still an unresolved issue.
try market enabler from the market.

That won't have any effect. He already has the app but it's restricted to working only for those within the UK.
OP, try tvcatchup using your Flash enable browser.

Firstly, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
Although it was a great idea (and one I hadn't thought of) it didn't work because it gave a message saying my i.p. was not compatible with the service. I suspect that's because I'm probably number 10,000 to sign up and use that i.p. and it was therefore blocked long ago. It did play the ads so in theory you're right, it would definitely have worked, so for anyone else reading this who has access to a 'clean' proxy, try it.
It wasn't a massive issue for me because I can get I Player via my browser using the proxy but it is a bit of a pain navigating it, as opposed to the clean interface of the player itself but it's better than nothing.
Also to anyone else reading this, I do get ITV Player and 4 On Demand via my proxy and I can get all the sport on 5Live, Sports Extra and Talksport, so it's only the stand alone players themselves that can't be broken.
Thanks again for the help and whilst i'm here, do you know of any other UK tv catchup services besides the one you gave me?
* UPDATE *
whatsontv.co.uk works like a charm through the proxy, the only downside being there's no live feeds but it is worth having.
Also, Blinkbox works with a proxy. Plenty of good free series but no live feeds.
123webtvdotcom is also a good service that works with a proxy and it simply gives you a grid of live tv programs that it then forwards you too.
All in all, three good finds thanks to the posters suggestion, so thanks.

A HUGE Alternative for WI-FI Direct

aren't most people angry and jealous from the xperia s owners who have the w-fi direct on there phone's white papers
well here's the deal....... Sony never actually made any to the xperia s:victory:
and now every one can get a VERY similar service and even better...... without any restrictions like being only able to transfer with this technology to the same phone model only.......etc so lets cut to the chest
here is what you gonna do:
1- download the app wi-fi file explorer pro
2- turn on wi-fi hotspot
3- open the app
4- connect the other device(phone,laptop....all works) to your hotspot
5- on the 2nd device's web browser type the address exactly as shown in the app with the port too
(like http://192.168.1.1:8000/ where 8000 stands for port) i also recommand using the fastest net browser on the device such as google chrome on pc and opera's small version (800KB) on android.................etc
congratulations you can now transfer files without a router or a usb cable and with speeds up-to 50 Mb/s on a non-wifi direct device

correct
the thing to notice too is when wi-fi direct first launched it was saying in the wi-fi alliance web site that this technology doesn't require any special hardware and also can connect to other devices that don't have this software
but now it seems to have change because of there marketing strategy
because if a simple programs such as AIRDROID and wi-fi file explorer pro can do it on any wi-fi device how could companies claim that this is a hardware required tech???

[Q] Free mobile internet using Facebook ports?

Hello everyone. I am sorry for my crappy english even if I did not wrote my first sentence yet.
I live in Lithuania and here, in my country my mobile network operator offers free Facebook browsing for everyone. You just turn on data connection on your android and you ready to go. You can do everything you want in facebook completely for free: watch videos, chat, upload something. Speeds are really good (now you can even use 4G if your phone deals with it). If you want to browse youtube or google (or anything else) you need to pay then.
Yesterday I noticed that you can chat for free on "messenger" app too. I think it is because "messenger" connect thru the same facebook port or something (I dont know, im bad at these technologies). Anyways, my question would be: is there any way to use browser connected thru that facebook port or something? So my operator would think I just browsing in facebook while I would browse google or something else? Is there a way to configure mobile or just a browser to work like that?
I not really use mobile internet often, because I have wifi, but this is realy interesting.
Anyone got an a answer ?

Kyocera KY-01L Android-based e-paper smartphone

This device caught my eye recently (Kyocera KY-01L):
https://uncrate.com/kyocera-ky-01l-card-phone/
Points of interest:
* Android-based
* e-paper display
* ultra compact
Personally I feel Kyocera made a huge mistake by not including the Play Store, or at least including an e-Reader application. A pocket-sized e-Reader that is also my phone just sounds awesome in theory (although the 380mAh battery might prove otherwise in reality...)
Since I use Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer for all my communications, I can't really use this unless I can get gApps installed.
Does anyone have experience hacking Kyocera phones? How difficult would it be to get root, TWRP, and gApps working on this thing?
I googled that phone and found your post. Most intriguing idea, but overpriced imho. I would like to test my developer skills on that but without adb or at least apk installer its useless
Android is not fully compatible (out-of-the-box) with e-ink and screen sizes under 3", unless it's heavily modified. Which is not worth the investmet, considering the target market. And even if Android were adapted, many apps wouldn't run anyway. They wrapped a layer around it to run essentials services. Note that there is a real browser though.
KY-01L Information
So i bought one of these myself out of curiosity and here's what i've found:
ADB can be enabled from the phones settings (the option is called "switch usb debugging") once it's enabled you can sideload APK's
APK's cannot be installed on the phone itself, when doing so you get the message than unknown sources are not enabled however as kyocera have modified the security settings there is no way to enable this afaik
The apps use AOSP icons and have some normal screens present which can be accessed with an activity launcher
When using installed apps the E-ink screen switches to a high refresh rate mode at random and the only way to get it back to normal is to launch cardphonehome (the default launcher)
The phone won't connect to any UK networks (i've only tried vodaphone and EE sims in it)
Bluetooth media audio seems to be removed entirely, even when sideloading a music player
The stock keyboard uses a 9 key input for text, you can sideload something like gboard but i haven't found the option to set it as the default input method
If you intend to buy one then i would suggest looking on YAJ proxy sites like buyee as they tend to go for ~£160.
Apps i'd recommend sideloading:
Activity launcher - lets you get into hidden menus and back into the stock launcher
Stealth music player - Plays music through the phones earpiece, can also enable the earpiece for use with audio from other apps
i'd also suggest lowering the DPI as some apps may be cramped
Dialer codes
*#*#4636#*#* - Android Testing menu
*#*#3878#*#* - Qualcomm FTM menu
*#*#225#*#* - Calendar info
Update: i've noticed the soc that CPUZ is reporting conflicts what others have said, ADB's CPU info command reports it as a wear 2100
I'm really curious if/how an ebook reading app would work on this. Did you try that out?
I'm considering buying a used one to try out as an ultra portable ebook reader.

Hi
First of all, I appreciate the above information where I could find customizing about KY-01L. I was able to install Gmail, Chrome, Line lite, Gboard, and other utilities into my KY-01L!
To be honest, it was quite a stressful process to load apk`s and configure them a number of times.
The first step, I installed the Square Home launcher (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ss.squarehome2&hl=en&gl=us) and the Quickshortcut maker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut&hl=en&gl=us) that I am able to configure 10 times easier (Maybe some similar types of the app should work). the default setting of KY-01L is not able to configure app by the screen that is how it is designed by Kyocera.
After setting those 2 apps, I can configure launcher/shortcut in the home menu.
My KY-01L is not stable yet... still need to minor adjustments of configuration but it works what I was expected.

Hi
I am using NTT Docomo carrier (in Japan) which is the preferred carrier for the KY-01L. KY-01L has limited bandwidth using LTE bands of 2.0GHz and 800MHz only. You would better check with your SIM carrier that uses those bandwidths or not.

Well, it seems that my carrier doesn't offer the exact same frequencies. 3G is at 2100 MHz (B1) and LTE is at 2100 MHz (B1) and 1800 MHz (B3).
Too limited, indeed. I've been using Docomo and SoftBank and AU phones for over fifteen years now and they all worked but not this one

Hi I just ordered my KY-01L off ebay, and looking forward to doing what you're doing!
My question is - after you installed all these things (Square Home Launcher, Quick shortcut maker, Gmail, Chrome, Line lite, Gboard and other utilities), does the battery drain faster even when idle? If so, how much faster vs the vanilla version.
And what other utilities were you able to install on the KY-01L? Music player? Kindle? Youtube? Just curious to see what works...
Lastly, was the Square Home Launcher the only launcher that works? Or there were others that work but this is your preference.
Thanks!
