Verizon Killing Grandfathered Unlimited Plans - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/verizon-cfo-says-grandfathered-unlimited-plans-on-the-way-out/
Pretty sure I'm going to go in and upgrade to a Rezound tomorrow and then exchange it for the Inc 4G when it comes out.

That'll be your last upgrade with unlimited data. So torn about stay with vzn from here on out
Sent from my VivoW using Tapatalk 2

I actually think I'm going to pick up the GNex tomorrow to try it out. My wife has a Rezound so when the DInc 4G comes out I can compare all 3 and decide which I want.

I'm already on tiered data, so it doesn't matter to me.

It does me. It's the only thing that has kept me on Verizon (well, that and my wife. that's another story though ).

Hey guys,
Glad this came up here. So I am grannyd in on my dinc2 (signed 2yr in July) along with a really good old verizon talk/text plan and with a business discount. So all in all things are peachy for me atm.
So here are the problems: the wife has long been up and needs to ditch her iphone from work. Wtf do I do?!
1. Do I wait this out to see what the family plans look like?
2. Or do I upgrade her now onto a 4g phone and get in before the family plans come out? Hell they might actually be ok if priced decently?!
3. Could I get a used 4g phone add that to my unlimited plan?!
4. Should I add her a data line and get her an off contact phone so we aren't locked in for 2yrs?! Is that possible?!
Jezus this is f'd up. These greedy mofos will go down at some point. And here is praying that Google does it from right under their own feet (their own network)

So, assuming the Inc 4G is released before this change goes into effect...
First Question:
Will upgrading to the Inc 4G guarantee that I'll have the unlimited data for the full 24months, or will put the kibosh on it once the shared plans go "live." It seems like contractually, it would be hard for them to do the latter, but given how Verizon hates it's customers, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it.
Second question:
I'm on a family plan and we still have a few people with dumbphones. Suppose they upgrade to smartphones and sign up for a shared plans. Will my unlimited plan just coexist and not be part of that share, or will Verizon say "You can't sign up for any new shared plan without obliterating any unlimited data lines on your account." Again, Verizon hates it's customers, so I would not at all be surprised if they try that second option.

Your 1st question I'm interested in the answer as well,:
Your 2nd question, I'm in the same boat and was told I could keep unlimited as long as the plan doesn't change ie same # of texts etc, but dumb phones upgrading would havto, as of now the 4g tiered plan, not sure if after they ditch unlimited if they'll stroke you into the shared plan though . Anyone know exactly when the unlimited plans will ditched?

http://www.androidcentral.com/verizon-clarifies-new-data-plan-policies
When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

So, I'm gonna wait at least a little while longer. I now know I don't need to rush out and upgrade today. Sounds like these plans won't start kicking in until "later this year" and they say they'll give plenty of advance notice so I should be able to wait for the DInc 4G to come out but it will be my last true unlimited plan upgrade.

As far as your first question goes, yes upgrading to the Inc 4g before the new plans come out will allow you to keep your unlimited data. And you'all be under contract for another 2yrs with unlimited. Once your contract runs out you'll still be able to keep your unlimited data as long as you pay full retail price for all your phones from that point on. The min you buy a phone at reduced pricing from vzn you'll be forced on to a new teired data plan.
2nd. Question not so sure about but I highly doubt they'll let two different types of data plans coexist on the same plan.

Won't be your last unlimited plan upgrade. Vzn released a follow up statement saying people with unlimited plans will be able to keep them but that they will have to buy their phones at full retail price. Once you upgrade through discounted pricing on a phone, that will be when they'll take your unlimited data away and put you on one of the new plans

yeah, not really looking forward to buying phones at full price
verizon really needs to clarify those already on family plans with shared minutes (like me and my wife)...what happens if she wants to upgrade? does that mean i get forced onto shared data with her?
cuz honestly, i wouldnt mind that much (mostly cuz on her own she wont use over say 2gb once i have my own lte phone) if she could still use her upgrades going forward if i could keep my unlimited data

Ok fom my expuerence if you guys have been with the company for a while just put up a ***** tell them you are leaving. Im with tmobile and i get great offers all the time that are meant to be for new customers only. I once got two new phones forget the name and only had to pay tax on them and i got them to order them for me. Believe me the last thing they want is for you to leave them.

whoa, I'm tmobile too but I have full unlimited data plan, all the bells and whistles and STILL have to pay FULL price for my devices! Complaining does nothing for me! My HTC SENSATION 4g costed me almost 700.00!! One good thing about tmo is you do have the option to take the device home and pay approximately 20.00 a month for the device. This makes it a bit easier than having to pay all at once.! But their data is NOT cheap! I have two lines unlimited data, one equipment charge (20.00)
My bill for last month was 254.00! That seems outrageous to me! I asked about it and they said I can cancel some services I have to lower it, such as hotspot tethering ect. But I need those services. I've been with them for ,4 years, seems like I should at the very least, get a reduced equipment charge! But I still have to pay full price! Complaints get me no where.!

complaining may or may not get you anywhere with carriers
a lot depends on who you complain too, how often, what the complaint is, and your history of service and complaining with them
many people have gotten ETF's waived, but it usually takes a series of calls over several weeks and months proving there is something wrong with their lines and services
complaining about your contract and what it contains, depends on what you are up in arms about...i really dont see being able to argue your way into an upgrade AND keeping unlimited data once the family data share plans start...regardless of your circumstances/history (but who knows)
a few years back (2008/9) my wife and i were extremely unhappy with our BB8830s and were each around 8-10 months away from an upgrade (me 4 months into my annual my vzw upgrade, she was half way through a 2 year)...i must have called 25-30 times and spoken to half that many different CR's and supervisors, demanding that they move our upgrade dates up to get the BB Storm (lol, ikr) or that when our contracts were up we would leave for ATT to get the iphone because its what we both really wanted
basically everyone i talked to gave me the "ok, have fun with ATT" talk and refused to do anything except move *1* of our upgrades up by a few months....despite my carrying on that we had been customers since the late 90's (well i had been) it all fell flat
other times, however ive been successful in getting replacement devices with no ?s asked...wife actually dropped her first tbolt and it stopped working (but showed no real damage) and we got it replaced for free w/o insurance...and i got my fascinate replaced with the inc2 when the speaker failed (and the fascinate was actually a used device bought off ebay a few weeks after its launch)
so its all situational i suppose
/end rambling

I was at the Verizon store today and asked about them about the Incredible 4g. Said it was supposed to be out this month but its delayed until probably next month. I also asked if it will be out before Verizon kills the unlimited plan and he says they have decided not to do it ans they got a corporate email saying so. Not that I believe them anyway just stating what they said.

Your last sentence said it all... Cardinal rule of Verizon: never believe anything the salespeople say. It's never right.

I was a former in store tech for vzw before they laid us all off and i still have good friends that work as sales reps and one told me he heard a rumor about this taking affect at the end of june. Again its just a rumor but we all know its coming. If i hear anything gurther i will post my findings

I think its gonna mean alot of people will hold off on upgrading there phones, folks aren't gonna give up that on a whim just to get a new phone.
It won't affect me because the razr was my first "smart phone" so I have the 4 GB double (2 GB) data for 30 bucks deal, so in 1 year and 9 months or later (depending on when we next upgrade) before we get to even use this data share (which i'm hoping will help reduce are monthly cost).
I got my Razr w/ 4G-LTE unlimited data grandfathered in.
VZW is going to change the terms mid-contract? I doubt they'd even try.
If limited data is my only option, I'll cancel. Lots of other people will, too.
You would be able to fight it. The only way they can is by tricking you and we all know they are into that!
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
It won't be until your next upgrade cycle most likely, the "Keep My Current Data Plan" option will disappear.
So I have roughly 2 years, at which time I'll buy myself something off contract.
I will be very unhappy.
Ive been with Vz for about 8 years now. You would think they would have learned something with the huge backlash ATT got with their "unlimited plan" customers and getting taken to court.
If they will only change it from unlim to limited by upgrading AND with them charging a fee for upgrading... I see a lot of ppl getting phones elsewhere then.
Not happy to hear this
All companies involved in mobile data today are pushing users to the cloud for all storage, we have to stream our music, pictures and videos to and from our devices. On top of all the cloud services, the device manufacturers are limiting the storage capability on the devices. Take the Galaxy Nexus for example; it is built with no memory card slot, and so are many other devices coming to market today. At the same time we are buying limited storage mobile devices, all of the mobile data providers are cutting back on data allowances.
Are the data providers and device manufactures building this limited data structure together? I don’t know, but my gut says YES. As technology progresses it always gets cheaper and these companies are trying to change that relationship. I've been with big red for almost 8 years, the first 5 years my bill was no less than 500 a month, the last 3 has been no less than 275, all with unlimited data, always getting a little cheaper. If I get forced into a data plan that I have to watch just to keep from getting slammed with overage charges, I’m done! Not only done with Verizon, but I will give up all mobile data, purchase a few nice flip phones for my family and go month to month with Cricket or the like.

Not a lot of people will cancel. Who else can you use. In my area verizon crushes. I would gladly switch but no one even at a better price gets device where I need it. 9 guys in my shop are unlimited and 2 were crying about this.
Let's face it. Its money. Verizon will eventually fully phase out unlimited because they can. They will make more money and 97% will not leave because the red devil owns them. It sucks but its true. Lots of people don't come close to 2gb a month but I use around 6gb. I pay for 10gb.
What kills me is thru Cox cable internet I have the 12meg package w 15meg speed boost. It cost me $45 no and I get 200gb. Verizon charged $50 at a double data rate for 10gb. How does this happen? I don't mind paying tier plan if they were reasonable. For me 10gb should be $30. Realistically $15. Makes no sense how they gouge for data but they have more people lined up waiting for their service.

Not according to the transcript on that article. It only effects the customers with unlimited plan migrating from 3G device to 4G's.
Fran Shammo - Verizon Communications Inc. - EVP & CFO
Well, the way we have designed this and of course, it is paper, not actual and we will see how this comes out, but the way we have designed this
is we really shouldn't see a short-term decline. And really the theory behind this is LTE is our anchor point for data share. So as you come through
an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data share plan. And moving away from, if you will, the unlimited
world and moving everybody into a tiered structure data share-type plan.
So when you think about our 3G base, a lot of our 3G base is unlimited. As they start to migrate into 4G, they will have to come off of unlimited
and go into the data share plan. And that is beneficial for us for many reasons, obviously. So as you pick what tier you want to be and we think that
there will be some price up in those tiers.

Just buy your phone on ebay and sell it back on ebay. I figure i lose about $150 a phone each year. But i've had the Fascinate/droid charge/razr over the last year and half. All 3 were top phones. I don't plan on 'upgrading' see no reason for it. I will upgrade only the phone, but on ebay.

I got on the tiered 3g for 30 and got the unlimited 4g hotspot for 30 when they still offered it. Because of that I have unlimited data currently. Do you guys think this change will affect me?
Spat from the mouth of mah Droid RAZR Maxx!
The truth is it will eventually affect everyone. The start is 3g.
High prices<tiered data<limited 3g<limited 4g.
Inevitable
THe clarification today was that if you ever get a subsidized phone or switch your plan, ie. 3g to 4g; you move to the new plans.
So if you are 4g and buy phones at full retail or elsewhere, no problem and you can keep it forever because you aren't making a change.
I know some people still on 350 minute loyalty plans. No issues, but they can't change a thing.
There was a leak from the new york time or something saying you can keep your unlimited data plan if you pay full price for a new phone instead of the subsidized price.

umm, yes it was:
http://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2012/05/data-pricing.html
When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.
So it seems as long as you don't upgrade, for now you get to keep unlimited data.

That isn't acceptable to a lot of us. I certainly could not have afforded the $650 pricetag for the Rezound when I got mine in Dec. The only reason I'm on this phone is because of the subsidized upgrade price.
Wait a couple of months then get it on swappa or craigslist. That is what I am going to do.

This.
When my contract expires, I'm gone from Verizon unless their plans drop in price.
I am a bit confused here. I admit I am bit thick headed sometimes but I called Verizon and they are telling me that I will have unlimited as long as I have a contract with them and even upgrading my phone they will never take my unlimited plan no matter if its 4g or 5g
I say call Verizon and get it from the horses mouth.

That is because CSR's are like used car salesmen, they tell you what you want to hear. Not really lying to you but definitely not telling you the whole truth. Sometimes it because they just want to keep your business. Alot of the time it is because they are to stupid to know exactly what is going on. If you don't believe me, go into any Verizon Wireless corporate store and ask them were the antennas are for the Rezound. I'd go paychecks with you that 9 times out of 10 they will tell you they are inside of the phone.
Ok so this is how it sits as of right now, you have a few options:
1. If you are on a 3g device with unlimited data you can keep it after the deadline. If you want to upgrade to a new phone but want to keep your unlimited 3g data, you must buy the phone at full price.
2. if you did what most of us did and went from unlimited 3g to a new unlimited 3g/4g phone. you get to keep it till your contract is up. when it is up, and want to get a new phone and still have the unlimited data you must buy a new phone at full retail.
as of right now. we aren't hurting there business having the unlimited plan nor will they just straight take it away from us. the way they will force us off of the unlimited plans we have is to make us pay full price for a new phone when its time because they aren't stupid and know we the consumer will always be looking for the next best thing.
Looks like I'll be buying used phones off of craigslist once I'm tired of this phone. That is, unless the deadline is further out than my updgrade date.
for me. sprint is just as good as VZW where i live / work. so if i cant keep it im out.
*sigh* Hasn't been the best week for me and big red. In a heated moment of passion I decided to damn the man and order an unlocked GSM Gnex and opt for the $30 5gig data plan on Tmobile HSPA+... joke was on me because upon further analysis of their coverage map, and daily testing, I have come to realize that in a majority of places I go with my phone I would only have 2G coverage.... So having wasted the $30 and now a %15 restocking fee from google, I sit anxiously waiting for Verizon to announce WHEN the cutoff is.
Remember last summer? They eventually announced the exact day in July that people had to get a new contract with unlimited data, I had not paid any atention at the time because I was mid contract with a Droid2. I logged on tonight to check my account with Verizon again, and noticed that both my and my wife's phone on a family plan, each having $29.99 unlimited data plans, are due for an upgrade on June 30 (which I knew)... however my wife's LG Ally is now eligible for a subsidized upgrade NOW, a full month+ ahead of time?? I cautiously added the upgrade to my cart, and was prompted with the plan changes menu, where it still showed the phone as having $29.99 unlimited data, with a note that once that option was changed it could not be changed back...
Has anyone else seen this as well? So clearly we can indeed still upgrade from 3G to 4G at a subsidized price and keep unlimited data? Or at the very least until they announce the cutoff date.

Until the cutoff date. And we don't know when that is, sadly.

Upgraged phone on my second line and kept unlimited data

Got a call from Verizon today with an offer to upgrade the phone on my second line (a dumb phone for my mom). I was very specific about not doing anything to change my unlimited data plan. The rep assured me that it wouldn't change my plan at all and that my grandfathered unlimited data plan would stay intact so I upgraded her Samsung Intensity to the mark III version for about $50. I'm keeping an eye on my account, but so far the rep was right about keeping unlimited data on my Rezound. I'm still on the FamilyShare 700 plan. I'll make sure to check again when the phone gets here and I activate it.
The rep did try to sell me on the new share everything plans, pointing out that I don't use a lot of data. I just thought to myself, "That's because we don't have 4G here yet."

There have been a few reports of people keeping unlimited data through upgrades. Maybe because AT&T allowing grandfathering?

My parents are due for upgrades on their dumbphones and they'll be going with dumbphones again. So far the store sales people have assured us that upgrading will not affect our plans, but that appears to only apply to dumbphones. They don't have data or even texts on those 2 lines. And if Verizon does try to force my brother and I into shared data, we're jumping ship and going with somebody else, probably US Cellular or Straight Talk. I'd go with Sprint but my wife has it (still under contract with her family) and it blows.

It doesn't matter what they upgrade to... If you're already on the old plans you can stay on the old plans...they can upgrade to smartphones and you could still stay on the old plan... They would just get 2gig $30 packages

Verizon Pre-Order is Up

I picked mine up. .. With a ship date by 11/27!?
I really hope it doesn't take that long.
http://shop.verizonwireless.com/?id=galaxynote2
November 27? Wow
It sucks indeed along with the $699 full retail price I paid. Whatever though Ive wanted since we never got the first one. Atleast its coming!
Yes the delay is really unacceptable as well as tbe retail price. I will try to order one today, seeimg as there is no rush.
I really think their stalling to let HTC's Droid branded phablet get a jump on sales it's set to release soon too last I heard.

yes
So... I'm looking to buy this off contract since I'm not loosing my unlimited data. Currently I only have a 3g phone and never had a 4g plan (3g unlimited is mine), would activating a phone that was purchased without a plan make me loose my unlimited, or have a limited 4g plan???
And yeah this delay is ridiculous, it's a good legitimate complaint that could get the upgrade fee waved for some.

Good question. I'm not sure, about the 3g to 4g, but my guess is you should be fine. You'll need to get a new SIM for 4g. Best bet is to contact Verizon support and ask if it affects your data plan at all. Hold on to it while you can! Rumors have it that the unlimited plan will end this spring.. You may want to do the math and see if it'd be worth it or not.
The only way to avoid the tiered data plans is by purchasing the phone outright. So as long as you're not buying the phone from Verizon at their 2-year contract/upgrade price, you're keeping you're unlimited data.

If it ends this spring I'll buy it on contract I can live (barely) with 2Gb data a month. If I remember correctly the ETF fee is waived if they change your contract terms, not sure if that's if they notify you or not, i.e. a surprise FU from big red is reason to waive the ETF.
I'll get on the phone soon, thanks.
Got mine preordered today. Supposed to ship by 11/27 also. Cost me 740 and change but worth to keep unlimited data. Funny thing is the rep on the phone didnt even know what the note 2 was. Lol. Funny we know this and they dont.

I was bored so i called and asked your above question about coming from 3 to 4g. I spoke with the contract department so they say and they said if u pay full retail u will keep unlimited no matter what as long as its smartphone to smartphone. Going from 3g to 4g phone doesnt matter. Just make sure when u ordered or buy it u make sure u still have unlimited data. When i bought my S3 full retail they changed my unlimited data to one of their BS plans and i had go through over aweek of calling to get it fixed back. I also asked if paying retail to keep unlimited data was going to be ending by next spring and he said there is no imformation or plans to do that. Doesnt mean much since i/we usually know more than their employees do. All i can say is screw u big red for getting rid of unlimited data in the first place.

Thanks for the info If they are going to kill unlimited the phone would still be cheaper with the ETF fee paid (by ~$125 assuming they add it to the advanced devices page). If taking a subsidized phone means I have to go onto that BS share everything (get less) for the same price plan that means I'm going to pay full retail.

Perhaps the delay is to sell more RAZR HD and Maxxs more than the HTC DLX?

I noticed the first feature under multi-tasking is the "multi-window" feature. Since most US carriers dont have that feature from my understanding, maybe its to allow time to include the newest possible firmware? (long shot I know, but im bored and sick of waiting just like you guys and looking for any rays of light)
I am going to complain about the release date to directly to Verizon. I really doubt that they are releasing the phone late to improve anything. It is more likely that they are holding off the release to sell another device (as mentioned above).
Verizon seems to take customer complaints serious. This whole release has been a disaster.
Let me know what you send Ill spam em too

Anyway to keep my unlimited?

Ok so no need to get scared Verizon didn't kick me out of unlimited, here's the deal so my mother finally made the change and got an iPhone and so did my dad, my dad had at&t before, Sooo when they get home my moms like " hey guys so we got the phones and 6 gigs of data but the girl said not to watch videos then my mom said that the girl told her that me and my sis didn't use our unlimited that much...
As soon as she said that I spring into action and check out my Verizon settings and sure enough it was a 6 gb share everything data plan for 4 smartphones... Me and my sister lost our unlimited and I'm like hell no so I take my mom and dad and drive down to Verizon to get my unlimited back and obviously get an actual better deal? So I start discussing with the sales representative that sold my mom the phones and exposing why her "good deal for us" was pure Bs since we already had 1 gig out of the six and it was barely the first day and the 15 dollar charge for going over a gig= no thanks...
Aparrently I used 8.5 gigs the last month and my sis used two gigs...
So we keep on discussing she says she can hook us up with a 16 gig shared data for 350 and says we save 10 dollars, so I broke it down for her there saying if me and my sis revert to unlimited data, my parents get the 2 gb data plan for each of their phones, unl text and calling and then my two little sister unl txt and talk, and the total to that came to 330.
In the end she said that since we had already 5 lines on the family plan, and my dad was adding his line we couldn't keep the old plans since apparently there is a 5 line limit, and the shared data plan ups the limit from 5 lines to 10 is this true? And I think I read somewhere a long time ago that if u have good credit with Verizon that u could add 2 more lines into the old family plan?
Is this a lost battle and should I just settle for the 16 gb shared data? I'll hate having to limit my netflix viewing on the and just overall limiting my phone internet time.

From what I understand once you lose unlimited, there is no way to get it back
You can change your contract back within 30 days of when you make a change to your contract but I think I'm screwed due to the old way of only 5 lines on a family plan

Explain to your pops that it would save you guys money for him to open a separate contract for his phone. Explain to him that by you, and your sister going over the data cap he would have to pay more for the data than the extra contract. I have been looking into holes for awhile to see if we could do something similar. They won't get my unlimited until they pry it from my cold dead fingers...If it happens before that, then i will be moving on to greener pastures. C,mon Dish, and Google, Lte's see that data rumor come true....
This is why i hate big companies. They are so greedy...I have to get rid of my unlimited data and pay more per month for limited data? That is ridiculous. smh

No there's 6 lines now me my three sisters mom and dad
Funny thing is I think it seems they try to push 6 gb data to everyone because while I was discussing an Asian couple arrived and they had 6 smartphones with unl. Data and the sales associate next to me was saying how 6 gigs was enough for them like Wtf? no its not
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Usually they pull the account and check the average that's been used over a long period of time and that's where they get the formula to recommend the shared data plan. They usually will recommend on the low side since its adjustable on the fly and the lower they can get that final monthly bill total the easier it is for them to sell it. The problem with that is the typical person financially responsible for the plan isn't a phone guru and doesn't make a habit of screwing with their phone, monitoring data consumption, etc until a huge bill arrives.
To the OP, it sounds like your family is pretty well established in their decision and things probably won't work out for you to keep your unlimited, considering they already made the decision and yanked your unlimited, which will require an act of congress to Change, and they already have their phones and probably your Dad ported a number I'm guessing. Which means they're comfortable and probably that one trip back to the Verizon store already has them tired of dealing with it.

Don't know if this can help in your family plan situation, but when I had to replace my phone (no warranty/insurance) they offered me an early upgrade and good price on a new Rez or GS3 but losing unlimited by using the upgrade. In order to keep unlimited the guy said I could get a "landline" (I think it's fios - unlimited nationwide calling) phone for $20/month.
So, if there's anyway you guys get unlimited on a couple or all lines for the $20/mo. it might be worth it.

I have 2 possible options for you. 1 is to make one of your sisters disappear. 2 is to take your unlimited data which is/was tied to your phone # and have it put into your own name so it would be a completely separate account. If your not old enough or have credit problems see if one of your sisters can get their own account.
Also there isn't any reason why 1 person can't have 6 individual accounts or 2 accounts with 3 shared lines.
