text reflow - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi does anyone know if text reflow works in the browser at every level in galaxy s3 like htc one x and galaxy nexus or is it like galaxy s2 where it just had double tap text reflow option and u werent able to adjust it at every level.

In the Phonearena video review, I'm pretty sure it showed the SIII browser as not having text reflow and the reviewer thought it was better without it unlike the One X which he criticized because of the way it handled text Reflow. personally I like the text to resize when I'm browsing on the One X.

I'm not sure if there's an option to turn on text reflow on the S3, either way I rather turn it off cause it looks like a mess when you're browsing the web. Look at the one x, it takes a few secs to rewrap the text.

Is it not like -
zoom in to what ever level you want, then double tap the text and it reflows.
I know it often works like that too.

Yup that's how it works on galaxy nexus but not on galaxy s2 so that's why wondering if it works in galaxy s3 or not ..... Any how can any one provide a link to YouTube video where the default browser is reviewed throughly of galaxy s3 ....

I for one can't do without the HTC like text reflow. If The S3 doesn't have it I suspect that will be the last straw after a sequence of disappointments...

Please don't get the S3
I'm pretty sure it doesn't have text reflow like it does on the HTC device

I was wondering about this too. IMHO text reflow is absolutely essential for a mobile browser. I don't necessarily need it to behave as aggressively as HTC usually does it but I do want at least some reflow to be possible.
I noticed on a galaxy tab 2 7.0 that I was playing around with at best buy I couldn't get text reflow to work...made me really sad, and also made me realize that even on a 7inch screen I still want this feature for browsing the web.
I saw a video posted on here (by an Alex someone I think?) that showed no text reflow on the GS3, but there was a reading mode that looked really nice. My concern is that this reading mode won't be available for all websites (he was looking at wikipedia on the phone).
Anyway if anyone finds a more definitive answer to this please post!

I'm concerned about this too. I asked the guy who made the videos about this in his thread. I asked if the reader option is available when going to the desktop version of for example gsmarena.com... I'm hoping the reader option is always there, that's the one and only thing I LOVE about Safari on the iPhone. The reader is amazing.
I hope he answers my question...

If it doesn't have it, which it has to, I can't live without it, cant some dev mod the apk to have text flow

This is always available with some third party browser like Dolphin, but it would definitely rock if the stock browser could reflow text at any level.

I checked for this yesterday when I had an S3 and didn't find any option for it I'm afraid (I also happen to think it is an important characteristic of a mobile browser). Guess I will be using Opera Mobile with the S3 too?

One other thing that helps even without the reflow is going into accessibility settings and increasing those settings

Apparently there's a 'reader mode' which reflows text at any zoom level but it works only for some pages with a higher content of text.

No text reflow similar to HTC unfortunately however I was pleased to.see video about led notification customization. That has actually won me over.

S3 neither do "Text reflow" nor "Auto-fit pages" after a manual "pinch to zoom", I tried it yesterday, though it has the "Auto-fit pages" option in the settings.
"Auto-fit pages", if enabled, only works for some parts of desktop web pages.
This is true for S2 and S3.

On my up to date 4.1.2 European galaxy s3 if I pinch to zoom and then tap twice on the screen, the text reflows and adapts to the screen size flawlessly. Just tried on this topic, as I searched for a solution. Thanks to the one who gave this advice!

[Q] Capabilities of the Xperia x10i

i've searched the threads and have not really found a direct answer to what I was searching for.. thus created this
curious to know.. is the xperia x10i capable of achieving any of the following (or will be in the future)
a) instead of the arc scroll for unlocking.. something similar to the iphone (slide)
b) password input (num pad) instead of the draw pattern
c) I know the image size for the wallpaper has to be (appx) 900 x 600 for it to fit properly in the background.. but any chances of having an image which is LOCKED on each page and when you scroll to another page.. it doesnt change?
d) having a different wallpaper for when the phone is locked versus home screen
e) changing background of sms screen? inserting image & changing the font bubble for the sender and receiver of text messages
f) double click functions (similar to iphone) where a double click can perform certain tasks such as opening a smaller window of music and changing songs
-- this would also apply to when the phone is locked (once again.. like the iphone)
that's all I could think of for now haha.. cheers

You should move on (emotionally).. and embrace the differences.. it's what makes the x10 an X10, and not an iphone... plus.. you'll find when you dig around on the market and search this forum, you'll find that as it's android you can customise it beyond your wildest dreams!! Especially compared to the limited changes you could make on the iphone.

I installed GOTO and a question regarding that.. on the lock screen.. it shows (default) text messages, call log and gmail.. can I customize those icons.. as in.. instead of what is presently there.. put text, dialer & music?
& is there any customized 'dailer' that you would recommend? default is pretty.. default lol
& ADW launcher decent? currently using that
I don't use GOTO so can't help with that, but I do use ADW and wouldn't use anything else, but I'm going to give Launcher Pro a whirl when we get the update.
Try SuperDial by Episode6 (off the market).. it's really good.
ADW is highly customisable - it will take you a while to uncover all it's wonders!.. first thing you need to do when you download it is go into the settings and switch off the "horizontal drawer" feature in the "Drawer settings" menu - doesn't work very well.. but the rest of it is really then down to you... and your wild imagination!!!
If you want to Root you can do even more, but I'm not that fussed about it personally (and I don't have that much spare time on my hands!)...
I downloaded DesktopVisualiser too (had to google that, couldn't find it on the market for some reason).. but that allows you to create your own icon (on your image editing software on your PC) and then assign an app shortcut to them - I created 4 red buttons for my actions buttons - at the bottom of ADW screen - for my 4 main acitvities - Call, Text, Email, Internet.. but you can also use photo's too..
Have fun!
oh.. and check this thread out... there's tonnes of ideas in here.. a lot of it is on rooted phones, but much of it can still be done on a non-rooted handset...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713391
you weren't kidding about superdial.. nice!
i've already rooted the xperia & used titaniumbackup to back everything up.. I guess the more I look into it the more I would be able to customize it (i'm on the same boat.. no time)
is there another software which I could use other than DesktopVisualiser to customize the icons? do you have a guide on how to do it with desktopvisualiser?
yeah that thread is nice but going through 124 pages might take a while
i'll put up some pics of my phone when I get a chance.. is shootme currently the best software to take phone snapshots or is there something better?

browser behaviour

on Samsung phones, also on SGS3, websites doesn't get rearranged by zooming in - that means when you zoom in a website, the text appears larger, but then it's necessary to scroll left and right to see all the content - doesn't matter which browser you use (testet with stock-browser, chrome, mozilla and dolphin). That's completly different with HTC-phones (tested with Desire HD and One X): when you zoom in using a browser (and it also doesn't matter which browser you use) then the text will be rearranged, so it's only necessary to scroll up and down, but NOT left and right - the text automatically fits in the browser window in horizontal direction! Is there any known hack or tool to get this behaviour on my SGS3? thanks Gerald

Maybe try the following in your browser on the SGS3:
Menu > Settings > Advanced > Auto-fit pages
After enabling this feature, I find that text on a website appears in a narrow column, which perfectly fills the phone's screen after zooming in using a double-tap.
I think this would only apply if the website styles are set up so that the width of the text element is relative to the width of the browser window.

I've this option checked, but that doesn't change anything! - HTC renders the same websites anyway completly different! And as I've mentioned: this can not be a browser-setting, because this behaviour ist browser-independent!

Zooming beyond the double-tap zoom level does not cause the text to re-flow like it does on the HTC One X.

thanks for that hint - but this "trick" is not a solution for me, because only a few websites do provide this "special icon" - with a HTC-phone the text reflows in every browser on every website when zooming in!
Use Opera Mini. Reflows like a boss on double tap and pinch and zoom. I've tried all the browsers, and it's the only one that does it.

CM10.1 messaging

Hello everyone.
I recently installed the CM10.1 on my galaxy s3. One thing that really annoys me is the fact that the messaging app (text messages) does not display the little bubble on top of the app to show that i have text messages. Is there a way to make it happen or am i missing something in the settings?
thanks!

[Q] Can't get text to wrap properly on browsers

I'm coming from a Samsung Droid Charge which offered no option to choose font size (tiny, small, normal, large etc.). On that phone I downloaded an app which allowed me to adjust the font to whatever percentage I was comfortable with (chose 120%). After that, all the browsers, and most sites, allowed pinch and zoom. I could easily obtain a readable font (for me), and the browsers and sites, immediately adjusted their layout so that the text wrapped around almost perfectly, almost all the time.
Here I am with the SG4, 4.2, (not rooted and afraid to try). It offers a choice of font sizes and I chose large. NONE of the browsers I'm using adjust easily and well to wrapping around and they do not offer the wonderfully adjustable pinch and zoom. I can't read most things on the web without squinting or scrolling horizontally because the wrap is for a wider font. I no longer have the pinch/zoom option. The app I used to use to adjust the size of the font, and a few other apps I've tried, have no effect anymore. My present browser choices are Chrome Beta, Opera Beta, the stock browser and UC Browser.
So I have a nice large high resolution screen on which to read, but I cannot find a way to make the text conform to the width/size of the screen and I can't read on it very well at all. I used to comfortably read about 2 hours/day on the Droid Charge and was expecting to do at least as well.
Suggestions? Help?
Thanks.

I never rooted the Droid Charge but did become very skilled at cursing and at finding apps to do a lot of what it wouldn't do and hadn't even thought of.
If I root the SG4, shouldn't I wait until all the "best" chip flashes are settled? And until I understand more about rooting. Is there a good description of what you get when you're done? I know I'd "lose" all the unwanted Verizon apps and Samsung apps. Would I also "lose" the Google apps, most of which I don't want? And could I keep the things I do like or do they all go?
As you can see, I'm nervous about it. Funny, I can take apart a computer, replace a motherboard etc., but I guess I feel I really don't understand how the phones work as well as I understand computers, drives etc.
Thanks for your encouragement and I may reach that point sooner than I know
You can re add apps you dont want, with hyperdrive rom ota he has all those apps ready for download and install. There is a video that explains it and u cannot fail if u follow the directions. I get nervous everytime but when its done, i dont ever know why i was nervous in the first place lol. If it messes up, u can flash back to stock just as easily. Its hard to actually hard brick a phone. As long as it powers into download mode, u are good to go

S-Notes versus LectureNotes

So I noticed on my note 3 that S-Notes is way better than it was on the Galaxy note 10.1 and Galaxy Note II. There are more useful templates and more useful features (mainly, syncing with more services like dropbox and evernote).
As people get more experience, can anyone tell me which service they prefer? I'm split because I prefer LectureNotes for its power and the Cornell Note-taking template. But the S-note app is better integrated into touchwiz and has more powerful options now with automatic evernote and dropbox syncing.
For me i think it will be down to the S-note's ability to flawlessly import pdf's and annotate it

what do you mean when you say annotate, because honestly lecturenotes does it flawlessly. you can import and then write on it, type on it, draw on it, insert pictures on it, basically everything you can do on a normal blank paper.

ok:
i'm just assuming here but still; i'm gonna assume that S-note has a widget where if placed on a homescreen you can simply type in without opening the app itself. lecturenotes from the few tests i just made can't do that. you can either have a "widget" (really an app icon) that can open to a particular page that you specify or you can have one that just opens lecturenotes, i see nothing that would allow you to edit without opening the app itself. definitely not something worth dedicating a homescreen to....

I got frustrated with S Note and ditched it. I'm using Lecture notes now and really like it. The main thing that killed S Note for me was the way the notes were organized. Felt very cumbersome and non-intuitive. I wish they had left the UI for browsing folders and notebooks the same. Or maybe I just had too much trouble transferring my old notes into it.
Anyways I was wondering if anyone knew how to quickly expend a single page in lecture notes. I know I can go into the settings and change it that way, but I'd like to be able to do it on the fly and on a page by page basis instead of a global modification of the page length.

I'd imagine you just select the marker tip with whatever color, then change the opacity between 10% and 40%. Whatever you're comfortable with. At least that's how I had done it in the old 10.1 model.

to expend a page? you wanna know how to quickly use up a page? don't understand what you're asking but i'll cover a few bases.
to quickly add a page click the "+" on the top right or if you're using a keyboard just press the down arrow.
to delete a page you click onto the page and open menu and delete it from there. deleting isn't as simple as adding unfortunately..
@ChrisNee1988: There is no built-in highlighter, as tastes concerning highlighters differ widely. As described by gina$zanboti, you can make one of the custom pencils to act as a highlighter, choose your favorite color and width, an intermediate alpha, and enable `draws behind other colors´. To quickly change to the highlighter, you can show the pencil toolbox (select `Show pencil toolbox´ in the `pencil´ menu, can be moved around by click-and-hold and setup in the app's tools settings; a single click on a pencil sets the pencil and a double-click on a custom pencil brings up the custom pencil settings) or assign it to your stylus button (in case your stylus has a button).
@gina$zanboti: I am not entirely sure whether I understand correctly. LectureNotes' pages have a fixed size.
Does LectureNotes have handwriting to text conversion? I have been using MyScript Notes Mobile which does do this but it begins to get laggy after 2-3 pages in terms of the screen delay from writing to on screen. When I used LN, it's near instant which is awesome and I really like it overall but converting to text is really big as I export QC scripts a lot.
My problem with snote is that importing removes searchable test which is a big no-no for me. Otherwise I'd probably use it. I am using it for free hand notes and like it for that.
@TheBigSaxon: There is no handwriting recognition in LectureNotes, but there are several soft keyboards that provide this functionality (meaning that you write with stylus and the keyboard app does as if you typed it).
tstsubi the
So, if your main storage for notes is Evernote, what is recommended as the front end for capture of notes, including handwriting recognition. Don't want to get locked into s note or lecture notes for the actual storage - just looking for advice on the best way to recognise handwriting, capture info etc, and sync seemlessly into Evernote.
any thoughts?
Is there any way in S Note to do a vertical page to imitate a sheet of paper like lecture notes can?

Click to collapse
Yes, there is a portrait template of ruled paper. Or you can use the default landscape ruled paper template, and then just rotate the tablet into portrait mode and it should rotate the page as well.

Here is my 2 cents in using snotes and others working with pdfs
Things I like about snote:
Keeps the use of pressure sensitivity. This is something very special about our spens and I like the feel. I want to keep it when I'm writing.
This might sound stupid but this makes the writing feel the most realistic and not so machine like.
Once I'm in the editing mode I stay in the editing mode. Unlike ezpdf and lecturenotes where I have to hit the pen to start writing again and hand/back to scroll. I found this really annoying. For people annotating it may not be an issue but if you're actually taking notes and such it's a pain.
All the other special tricks with spen work in snotes well because it was made for it.
Negatives:
It has to import pdfs...This was the worst. It can't just open it as a pdf and start editing. Probably creating image type files. Not sure how lecturenotes imports pdfs because it's not available for the trial version. I imported a 200+ page pdf and it took longer than expected but now that
I have an expected time frame I may be able to deal with it.
Since it's not keeping the integrity of the pdf it can screw up some things while importing.
I'm a math guy and it screwed up a few notations here and there.
Scrolling...call me lazy but continuous scrolling is beautiful. Although I didn't like the fact that you can't be in between pages in ezpdf. While scrolling and you let go the page will automatically place itself so you see either the previous page or next page on the screen (depending on how far you let the split go past the screen).
Snote's scrolling is swipe or hit arrow right at bottom of screen. Swipe right is too slow. Animations are nice but unnecessary when turning the page. I usually like keeping the writing area in the middle of the screen. Also a reason why I want to be able to put the bottom of the page in the middle. But my hand being in the middle i think its annoying to go down to hit the right arrow. Just me being an annoying *****.
Hope this helps someone out there. =)
Edit: realized I was missing the add on to import pdfs for lecturenotes.
With short use it has a lot that I wanted. Now I dont know what I should use...
Edit 2 played with settings and im purchasing it now
@aznxkpx88: There is no need to alternate between `pencil´ and `hand´ mode in LectureNotes: You can scroll/zoom outside the `hand´ mode if you enable `allow two fingers scrolling/zooming´ in the app's input settings. Since you seem to use an S-pen (in which case you should enable `use stylus (hardware detection)´), you can also enable `allow one finger scrolling´ and scroll with one finger.
The constrain on the maximal number of pages per notebook in the trial version applies also to PDF imports.
