[Q] Got new phone, trouble rooting - Motorola Droid X2

So here's my story, I am not entirely new to rooting as I have successfully rooted my Motorola Droid, My Droid X2, My Acer Iconia a500 (twice), My aunts Lg something, and my mothers Kindle Fire.
So a few days ago my Droid X2 started acting up, and would go hours on end sometimes without working.
I was very happy to find out that Verizon would replace it with no hassle as it was less than a year old. I got the replacement yesterday and it's working great... that is until I found out it came stock with 2.3.5 right out of the box.
Now I have always trusted XDA forums and have used them for a long time (although I finally just registered today to ask this)
The only root method I can find is to downgrade to 2.3.4 and then root, then install voodoo root protector, then upgrade.
Now I saw a few things about possibilities of bricking your phone when trying to read those tutorials (I have never had to downgrade before) and I was a bit concerned.
I was mainly wondering, I don't care about loosing data on the phone. I have a backup sd card I can use if I need to format that, and like I said, the phone is new and actually doesnt have a single app I have installed on it yet.
Is there any easy way to go back down to 2.3.4 for my situation? I just got the free phone and don't want to brick it a day later you know?

From what I gather, you can SBF back down to 2.3.4 with no problem. There may be a certain way you have to do it though. I have never been on stock 2.3.5 so I cant tell you from experience. But Everyone says it's possible.

That's my question in a nutshell
Yeah, I read a tutorial about how to do it using RSDlite, which I downloaded to my comp.
Now what I'm cautious about is white file to use. One of the tutorials had one, now while I know a tiny bit about rooting I know NOTHING about flashing it back, I wasn't sure if there was a way that this could screw up my phone, as it seems everything tested is with a phone that had already been rooted, or if there is anything phone specific in that file, or even if it actually is an OTA original (I'd rather not mess around with anything customized right now)
Whatever is the easiest method for getting be back down, I know how to take it from there as I've done it before.
Thanks for the response though!

So you have never used an SBF file? If you would have used it on your broken Droid X2 when it wasnt acting right, it might have fixed your phone. An SBF file simply wipes everything of your phone (excluding your SD card) and flashes brand new software on it. The SBF files are provided by Motorola so its not like you are using something made by a dev and can break your phone easily. You should be able to use RSD lite to flash the 2.3.4 SBF file and you should be fine. But then again, I have never SBF'd from 2.3.5 to 2.3.4 personally so I would feel bad saying go ahead with no worries and something bad happen. So wait for someone else to respond first.

Thanks!
Thanks for that info!
Also, I doubt that would have fixed my old phone, it seems pretty much like a hardware issue. The screen will display static for hours on end (think like an old tv if you didnt have cable plugged in) I think it's a loose connection somewhere or something. I didn't bother to really troubleshoot it myself though because I was like "lets see if Verizon will give me a new one" and they did, and because they didnt have any "replacements" i got a brand new one, with a brand new battery, so I wasn't going to argue the fact
Anyway, if the file is from Motorola where can I get it? I saw on a verizon forum that they were not allowed to post it there (or is it "from motorola" in the sense it was leaked?)
Thanks for all your help so far, you've been great!

Yeah, it does sounds like it was a hardware problem. Actually, I never thought about if motorola had a list of sbf files somewhere or if they were just leaked or what. I always downloaded them from threads like these. I just know they are made by motorola. You got me curious now. hmmm...

Duh
forget about my question as to where to get them, just saw the sticky at the front of this forum.
Although, it would be interesting to know if they were officially given out by motorola or leaked

What's An SBF File?
• SBF Is A File Leaked By Motorola That Is The System Image Flashed By RSDLite.

Trackball wont scroll down. How can i load roms now?

Just as title says. Ive tried all the fixes for it with no luck.
I dont really care for the trackball anyway, but I cant load roms without being able to scroll down.
Any suggestions xda community.
i had that problem like a week ago, didnt find any answers, i went to verizon and told them my trackball wasnt working and they were going to try and make me pay for another under my warranty,i told them that I read on many forums that it was a hardware issue and after they researched it they exchanged my phone for free.thats the only thing i can tell you to do. hopefully they can do it for you also.
It's the infamous trackball issue. I had ignored it until my came down with it a few months ago, it was around 6 months old. I called Verizon and got a replacement phone, they shouldn't charge you for anything. I couldn't see any other way around it, since I too am a rooted user. Good Luck!
i agree. its a known crappy trackball issue. call verizon and they should sent a replacement. there was an ruu that was an exe ran from your computer that should (someone correct me if i'm wrong) allow you to go back to stock on your eris if you are worried about the verizon people asking about your root. it was posted here, but i just looked and couldn't find it. trying to reup now. will edit this post with a link.
uploaded file http://www.multiupload.com/0B4EAQE25I fyi i'm not responsible if you brick your phone blah blah blah. i actually had nothing to do with writing the file, i just couldn't find it so i reposted it. it is an exe to run on a windows based computer with your eris attached via usb.

Here is a brutal hack from the Eris Root forum on AF.
I works, but you need to use adb from a PC, and be comfortable working at the command line.

I actually sent my phone rooted with KaosFroyo on it and Verizon didn't say anything! I've heard of a handful of people that have done the same.
People have sent it back no problems, but if you're worried run the RUU.

[Q] Screen unresposive after pre-rooted GB update

So I had originally put the leaked non-rooted GB update on my X2 with no issues. I had been running that for a few days when I decided to replace it with the p3 pre-rooted version. I did an SBF back to Froyo without issue, did the Gingerbreak, etc. The pre-rooted version went on fine with no errors, but then when it came up, the digitizer was unresponsive.
I did several factory resets, SBF back to Froyo again (several times), but the digitizer is still unresponsive....I now can't get past the setup screen. I also noticed that the emergency dial button has a blue highlight around it, and when I press the power button, the "Power Off" item in the menu has a blue highlight around it....almost like if I had a trackball or arrow keys, I could move the highlight....I wonder if it knows the digitizer is not functioning?
Has anyone else seen this? I see one thread on the Motorola site where two people have the same issue after updating the GB (presumable the OTA version since they are posting on that site), but no helpful responses.
My phone is only 3 weks old, so I am tempted to just SBF and try to get a replacement out of Verizon, but thought I would check here first in case I can fix it....or figure out what went wrong so it doesn't happen again.
i'm 1 of the people thats having the SAME EXACT problem as your having............ive sbf'ed like 100 times (no joke) and factory reset about as much............i'm just goin to take it back and hope i can get a replacement..............
I called Verizon and I was on my exact "30 day" since I bought it, so they are shipping me out a new one overnight. I have insurance, so I could have gone through them I suppose if it was after 30 days, but at least I'm getting a brand new one. Now I just have to decide if I'm willing to try it again.
So if more than one person has this issue, I'm guessing it is NOT a hardware problem. However, it is odd to me that doing the SBF doesn't fix it. I wonder what could be happening, maybe someone with more knowledge about this will be able to shed some light.
Unless we figure out what happened and how to potentially fix it, this seems pretty close to a bricked phone. I wonder it is something in the GB update in general, or something going wrong in the manual update!?!?!
Don't these phones have some type of manufactures warranty?
Edit: The phones carry a one year warranty wether or not you purchase insurance. If the hardware fails, as it has in your cases, they will replace it for free.

I did get it replaced, I am more interested in why a handful of us had this happen upon GB updating. Seems odd.

Not All Android Phones Are Built The Same.
I noticed you didn't say you factory reset after you sbf to 2.2.2 in your original post. I don't claim to know for sure but some people are not following this direction, and it MAY be one of the problems. It is recommended that all directions are followed exactly for a successful update. The only way to tell if there is a problem with the method is if everyone follows it to the letter.

Thanks, yes I did factory reset after the SBF. Oh well, this doesn't seem to be widespread and I got a brand new X2 out of it.

[Q] Unroot this beastie!

Ok, as im sure this question has been asked a 1000 times over, my search turned up no results...so lets ask.
I got this phone from good ol' craigslist with the explicit request that it not be rooted. SURPRISE its rooted and the orig. owner decided to do a fac. data reset, so im none the wiser until I start messing with the phone (lesson learned, no lectures in trading phones needed).
Not only can I not find a comprehensive guide on rooting this thing, I really want a comprehensive guide on UN rooting it.. honestly I'll turn around and root it again, but Id like to know the process going both ways.
The build number is 4.5.141 Firmware Version 2.3.6
If anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it!
also, My purchased apps are no longer registering as purchased on the Atrix, I can put my SIM back into my inspire and its all good, but the atrix says I need to pay, is this a side effect of rooting this specific phone?

1. To unroot, I guess you can flash your phone back to stock.
2. Your purchases are linked to your Google account.
I had my headphone jack go bad, so I needed to make it look as stock as I could. Simply flashed the stock rom found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944 for my model and was done.
To root I used the download from http://www.psouza4.com/Bionic/ and it worked perfectly.
Hope this helps.
Well, I tried one of the unroot processes or it may even been the CWM install process and I'm now the proud owner of a soft bricked Motorola
I found out that the previous owner used super one click, and as convenient as that is I hate that its all based on generic code. SO my problem has gone from unroot to unbrick. Any new suggestions? I'm getting a failed to reboot 3 message and the phone is entering rsd mode and not doing anything from that point on.
Also I know the market is linked to my Gmail, causing my confusion as to why the market on that phone is asking me to repurchase apps.

Screwed Noob

So I don't know ****. Yeah I said it, don't run away though. I'm still reading tons of information on the forum and you guys are awesome and I can't believe I never did this sooner!
I really wish I could have started from a stock phone but that was a great deal to me, and this is how things are.
The situation:
I bought a MINT Atrix 4 for $125. Great. Well the phone already has what the guy called "Jelly bean" installed which is cm10 if I understand correctly (the phone wont be activated till next week).
The problem:
He said "DO NOT try to record a video. The camera works, just not the video recorder. He also says WiFi doesn't work and DO NOT touch that either. Now that's a problem.
Phone specs:
Android version 4.1.1
baseband version N_01.77.37p
kernal 2.3.32.59-mb860-cm9-g89b8854
cm mod version 10-20120729-UNOFFICIAL-olympus
yada yada
If any specific threads can help besides the Nooby and FAQ threads I would appreciate that as well. The more information the more comfortable I will be with the phone.
I wouldn't call a broken phone mint. If wifi doesn't work, its likely that bluetooth doesn't either and if that's the case, you got screwed as the only way to repair it is to send to motorola. Which since you're not the original owner means you have to pay for the repair. I'd return it if he didn't disclose the broken wifi. Good luck
Try flashing a new radio and rom

It wasn't an eBay purchase so returning it isn't an option. Besides, I never said bluetooth doesn't work. From what I read, when both are not working its hardware and software if only one (most of the time).
Regardless, thank you for your worthless opinion and lack of help.

You're right you didn't say bluetooth wasn't working. Its just a known error around the forums. Really no need to snap at me or get defensive. I was not in any way belittling you so I dont appreciate your attitude from a self proclaimed NOOB. That being said, I'm over it and I agree with the other post saying to try another rom. Is it joker or epinter cm10 that its on? (Those right now are the active developers of cm10 for the atrix) If its either of those, read thru their developer posts and see if wifi not working is a known issue.
Your initial post definitely came off as rude. I think I have an idea on what to do but I'm going to do a little more research before I dive in. Thanks for real this time.
So I have tried downloading different cm10 files, a cm9 file, and gapps. When I'm in my recovery and try to install from the sd card, they wont load
(bad)
Installation aborted.
What should I try now guys? Am I damaging the files? I downloaded from jokersax's site (firefox)>open containing folder and drag to F: (I tried E: but I guess that's the phones internal?)

Really need to start recovering the phone not throwing roms at it till its fixed. Atrix is an odd ball when you get tied up in partitions and file locations. My suggestion would be to checkout fruitcake and start from there . There are more risky ways of getting out of that rut by try the easy stuff first. Phone needs a clean start and all new files. Cm10 has some issues depending on the logic board revision you have. Before you ask the only way to tell is to physically compare one logic board to another and there are very subtle difference. I only stumbled across this by accident during some full tear downs . I usually judge by symptom then treat them accordingly .
Like I stated above fruitcake is my recommend and I have used it numerous times with trouble phones that need a clean start.

[Q] Still no one could unlock the bootloader of Photon 4g 2.3.5 OTA?

Alright so new member here i have been using XDA to unlock and flash zip, kernals etc in android devices since 4 years.. i would like to thank this site :good:
Now straight to my point
Okay so I bought a Photon 4g 2 weeks ago and my bad luck its on 2.3.5 (I dont know if its factory 2.3.5 or OTA because i bought it from a friend who knows nothing about it) which means its bootlaoder is locked for good.. I did the ReservedOdm check and got "30000000000030003000100000000" which means =Electrify who performed OTA update to 2.3.5 and now stuck never unlocked) As the thread says.
Moreover I saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072644 by @nickman529 and I was really shocked to see that a 45 pages thread with skilled people couldnt unlock the 2.3.5 version of MoPhon. (I did not read the whole thread but i guess you guys couldnt found a solution) So my question is still in 2014 there's no method to unlock this beastly phone? an updated android OS is a must for this phone. We should do something as there are hundreds of people still waiting for XDA guys to come up with a solution.
I am not a newbie in this developing thing nor I am a developer I know In's and outs of unlocking etc.
I would really appreciate if XDA skilled guys will work on this again atleast we can do something? unlocking a bootloader of a phone is not impossible right? just that we need to work again on this. I want to get this done. Thank You :good:
Some details of my phone:
I flashed superuser with "Photon Torpedo Direct" method so I have root enabled
Build: 4.5.1A-1 SUN254_13
2.3.5
Hope I will get some replies as this is my first thread on XDA

i am afraid to tell you brother but there is no development under process of photon 4g the people on 2.3.5 are locked for good and its a misery for the developers too that they couldnt unlock it.. A replacement of another new model will be the only way to use new android versions lol :good:
check out Motorolla Moto G it has official upgrade of kitkat its affordable too :good:
photon
.. I've photon 2.3.5 and locked for sure.. hoping on dev to get a way out there..
come on guys I've got a few posts on here over the years about this lol I have a new account here since so I don't know where all those posts are.
sadly I have no clue what I did or how the heck I did it!
I bought the photon the day after it came out and used it for quite a while on sprint. I received the ota update to 2.3.5.
then when my contract expired I spent hours and hours and finally rooted and unlocked my phone and put it on straight talk. it was on the ota update so I was told I wouldn't be able to do it but somehow I did.
more recently I have a new issue with mine which is why I am back on here again but I am very disappointed I never had the chance to figure out how I did it.

brother we are talking about the bootloader unlock of photon 4g devices on 2.3.5 please clear that did you unlocked the bootloader or just unlocked your phone?? and whats your the problem you are facing now? let me know. I can help
I can't guarantee but I figured what I did would be called unlocking the bootloader. I do know I received the ota update as I remember having trouble with the phone after doing it so I was on 2.3.5 for sure. I do not remember what I did when unlocking it but it was completely factory plus the ota when I started and by the time I was done I had root access and I was running cm7 and I could put in my straight talk sim card and I had talk, text, mms, and data. that would be an unlocked bootloader if I'm right?
what I'm facing now is I get a message saying something about the modem did not start when ever I try turning the phone on.

if you have your photon with you right now then take a look at its bootloader open it and it must say UNLOCKED if not then your bootloader is still locked..
so the modem error comes and the mobile doesn't works?? I think its a hardware problem as far as i know
yea it does say unlocked in the corner of the bootloader screen.
I got the error when I tried flashing an update to my ROM. I don't know whether it flashed something that did that our if it was just coincidence that something went wrong with the hardware at the same time. I tried flashing it back to the old version and that did not fix the problem.

what really? it says unlocked that it means the bootloader is unlocked how the hell did you unlocked your bootloader on 2.3.5? you have to remember it brother?
I honestly have no clue this was only like the third phone I ever unlocked and I've done dozens since. this was back right after the ota came out.
all I remember is I spent days and days trying to figure it out. if I had another phone I might work on it again as that's a really nice phone but I don't really expect to ever land on one of them again.

I honestly have no clue this was only like the third phone I ever unlocked and I've done dozens since. this was back right after the ota came out.

I have an OTA-locked one that's fairly cosmetically beat up. New replacement battery. USB port cracked off just enough that normal USB cables work but car dock does not. Otherwise I *think* it's fine - I gave up on peetr's decrapped stock ROM, which is good I gotta say, and bought an unlocked one on eBay.
I'd give it to you free but I am literally sweating out my rent check. Would you be willing to part with $25 for it, includes shipping?
A friend brought me a photon of his he is wanting to use with straight talk Sim , It is on 2.3.5 ota I believe but don't know . Have tried to unlock the boot loader but keep getting (FAILED (remote: (00180001))) when I try to get the unlock key. It has root but does not register the straight talk Sim and I felt unlocking the boot loader would help me fix this issue but am finding I can't .can anyone help am open to any suggestions. Pls know though I am still learning how to use the adb, fastboot, and know little about rsd (can't get it to even pick up the phone)

Hi guys, I'm new to ARM devices, but I have a lot linux experience and a fair amount of Android experience, as I've done some device porting work at android-x86.org.
I was recently given a photon 4G with a locked bootloader, 30000000000030003000100000000
My question is, what is so special about the bootloader that it can't be replaced by another bootloader. I was just looking at the thread to put Arch Linux on the Photon, but that thread seems to have stalled and I can not ask any questions there because I do not have 10 posts yet.
I am guessing the kernel image cannot be replaced with a locked bootloader? I read the post by peetr_ about SBF's & CG's & signatures, but when are the signatures checked, at flash time or every boot? I dd'd the boot partition to /tmp/boot.img and pulled it to my linux workstation but I've not been able to mount it. Mount thinks it's NTFS, is that what a .smg is? NTFS in some sort of container?

Sure thing, I starred the notice of this in my email program and will get back on this thread next time I go thru my backlog if I haven't heard from you.
Funny how we're all in some way participating in all this work that manufacturers should've done, and a lot of us are broke.

Forgive me if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but here are a few random tidbits of info:
The OTA update blew a hardware fuse which somehow prevents bootloader unlock by any known methods
The only ROMs that can be flashed with the bootloader locked are ones using the stock kernel as-is, like peetr's ROM, so I think your guess about the kernel image becoming set in stone is correct.
Don't know anything else but I also have an OTA-locked one which I could run stuff on and get you output, if you want it, and an unlocked one (pre OTA update) running CM9. As long as it doesn't mess up my devices I could provide you with debug info.

I will try an remember to get back to you
there is one thing I was just thinking about that I do remember thinking about afterwards. whatever I did that made it work may have stemmed from what I later discovered was a corrupted file. I remember downloading file after file and trying to flash dozens of different files. every time I was getting all sorts of errors. suddenly tho I got a different error and after that when I would try throwing commands at the phone I would get completely different responses. my memory is very limited of it all but I thought I was completely screwed.
somehow tho I suddenly had a phone with the pre ota software on it.
whatever exactly it was that I messed up I have no clue without trying to re create the story.

Hey guys. Nickman529 here. Sorry I haven't ever updated anything on that thread. I don't have the MoPho anymore but I'd be willing to start up development if someone would wanna send me one or donate the PayPal funds for such. I hear your cries.
