(HOW-TO) UPDATED 6-21-2012 Unlock GSM for domestic carriers on Photon - Motorola Photon 4G

DISCLAIMER: I am not forcing you to visit this thread and start messing with your phone to make it do things Sprint and Motorola did not intend for it to do. If you have issues and your wife gets pissed because you borked her phone and haven't slept for 2 days trying to prove to her you can fix it, it's not anyone's fault but your own.
Credit for this discovery is not mine alone. It has been tossed around for quite some time that a version of the Japanese radio may hold the key to unlocking USA capability. XDA members Noncs and Lightsword1942 should be recognized for finding the proper Japanese radio. Please be sure to express your gratitude and encourage more work on this unlock by thanking folks involved and when possible donating. This keeps the cup filled and keeps the work going.
So you want to unlock your Photon to use on AT&T, T-Mobile or some other USA GSM/UMTS carrier. Well this is how to do it. The poll I have here is important. PLEASE DONT TAKE IT UNTIL IF AND WHEN YOU TRY TO GO BACK TO STOCK SPRINT OR RETURN TO SOME OTHER CDMA CARRIER! Most of the answers to "CDMA is still not fixed" have been folks that appear to be not very active in the community, or have found this googling how to unlock GSM for the photon. I have decided that it comes down to NOT following the instructions correctly/not understanding what currently is needed to get flash the GSM radio AND/OR get back to CDMA.
Things that need to know how to do before flashing KDDI or any other radio.
1-RSD an .sbf to stock base.
2-Unlock your bootloader.
3-Root your phone.
4-Install a recent custom recovery.
5-Perform a nandroid backup.
6-Restore a nandroid backup.
7-Flash a .zip from a custom recovery.
8-Create, edit or flash APN's. (for data)
9-Boot into recovery, fastboot, etc.
8-Accept responsibility if you screw up.
If you don't know what any of this is or means, than leave this thread and don't come back until you do and are comfortable with them. A good place to start is LokifishMar's All Things MoPho! Thank him and fill his cup! Please leave questions about these things at the proper threads.
Things YOU need to know:
1- The radio file for unlocking GSM/UMTS will be referenced KDDI for purposes of this thread. KDDI=GSM RADIO
2- Flashing KDDI will enable USA GSM/UMTS and allow USA carrier sims to work on your Photon.
3-Currently the KDDI results in error when flashing to Electrify. Sorry USCC guys, hopefully it gets worked out soon.
4-Flashing KDDI will break Sprint service while you are using it. This is not permanent and CAN be regained.
5-The GSM/UMTS functionality needs rom support! The rom devs are working hard to integrate into ICS based roms. Stock sprint works on GSM, although occasionally GSM would break after some time during testing. Currently the best functional rom for GSM is peetr's custom 2.3.5 hybrid and is currently the recommended ROM. Please don't gum this thread up with data and other issues after using the KDDI. It works and any issues with service are NOT here. Go to the ROM thread you are using.
...on to the good stuff!
Enable USA GSM/UMTS and retain the easiest way to get back to Sprint stock!1-SBF to stock base. Root your phone, unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and perform a nandroid backup of your stock rom!
2-Flash KDDI radio from recovery.
3-Flash your ROM. You may need to enable GSM/UMTS in your mobile network settings. You also may need to enable data roaming and set your APN's.
4-Profit! If all you wanted was the unlock then your done! otherwise...
Get Sprint stock back:
5-Restore your nandroid backup you created previously.
6-RSD the stock sbf.
7-Reboot and reactive Sprint (Hand's Free)
You can also if you choose flash a stock sprint radio and manually program to Sprint or another CDMA carrier instead of flashing back to stock.
Follow the instruction here after flashing a Sprint stock radio. Substitute the data flashed for Cricket with the data from needed from Sprint or your CDMA carrier. http://www.cricketusers.com/sprint-...photon-4g-cricket-talk-text-internet-mms.html
WARNING: This is not the easy way, the first method is recommended. You can easily bork your phone messing around with the software at the above link.
Download KDDI

Nice find.
I am going to try this in Europe too.
But I must say to everyone, be very careful with flashing radios.

Just a minor correction but Non¢s found the radio and made the zip, I guess I'm the one who came up with using the Japanese radio and what update-script to use. Was too scared to try it myself though lol.

Edited... big thanks to everyone either way, I am glad to be using it and out of Sprint!

By the way I repacked the zip with the sprint leaked radio if anyone wants to test it. MD5 is 42ACB7CA9929782DAEB027B61D578C19
Someone should also test if the unlock works from bootstrap on phones stuck on 2.3.5

Anyone know if this will work on CM9?

Probably will, give it a try.

Fantastic!
1. Where can we contribute the money that we committed to donate for this to be unlocked?
2. What steps would need to be taken to make this work for the Electrify?

So far I have tried kitchen sink gsm gummy install and one of my nandroided aokpcb backups installed with kitchen sink, with and without the phone info app. I have not yet had it working on any of those.
I have not tried anything except kitchen sink and stock sprint. I am testing more and will post results along with anyone else please do the same. I will update the OP with verified working roms as everyone lets us know.

Again, you need to apply libmoto_ril.so from that Japanese rom.

Not sure exactly what is needed for the electrify. If you are unlocked you might be able to just flash it and have it work. Also might need to flash a rom that supports GSM like cm7 or something.

I know with Joker's CM9 you have to change ro.telephony.default_network=7 to 0 in the build.prop for overseas GSM. Not sure if its the same for domestic or not. But i will definitely give this a test run when my girlfriend gets off of work, she has AT&t.

Now I tried with Olegfusion and it's normal situation here, every libmoto_ril.so works with this radio, except the Photon 2.3.5 leak libmoto_ril.so.

Don't think photon supports tmobile 3g bands currently(tmobile will eventually role out compatible 3g). So get at&t if you want 3g right now.

Yes the 6600 chip supports up to 14.4mb on hspa+, only supports edge/2g on tmo...

So say I'm using gummy rom and I installed the cdma version.. should flash the GSM version and then Flash the radio or should I flash the radio over the cdma version and that's it? Will it even work on that rom?

[Q] Updating a Videotron Amaze 4G to ICS without S:Off

Hey, Seems like Videotron is lazy when it comes to updating their user to the latest OS.
My friend has this phone and since I know a lot when it comes to do simple things like flashing roms and kernel, he wanted me to help him to update his phone. Thing is, I can't get, for the love of Morgan Freeman (AKA god), to S-Off his Amaze 4G. So I'll try the alternative since he doesn't need anything fancy other than the regular stuff.
I know that I can flash manually the OTA for carriers that has it but I don't know if I should try a Telus, T-Mobile rom and so on.
So what can I do about that?
And something else too, the last time I updated from OTA, it was when I received my Nexus S so I don't know if it factory resets and I need to create some backup in case.
You will HAVE to s-off if you want to update via another carriers ICS rom file, it's not possible with s-on, check the pin hole on his amaze, you may have to take a sharp pin and dig inside of it a bit, there seems to be a plastic covering it at times. Try s-off again after that, use a a paper clip with some tape insulating it, it works really great compared to wires. S-offed an evo 3d on the very first try today using one.
Okay, cool. Thanks for tips I will try it out.

This part is still unanswered and as I am in the same situation I ask the same question
I don't think the phone carrier matters once s-off since we usually don't flash the radio but especially for OTA upgrades maybe you have to be superCID and/or use a carrier that uses the same frequencies, 1700/2100 in Videotron's case?
Are there any other crucial differences than the radio between one carrier and another? Do we absolutely need to go by the OTA of another carrier to get to ICS or is there a way to flash any ICS based ROM and fix it manually after? I searched that but I can't even find the question asked... If we can't, then why? What are the modified parts from stock GB to stock ICS on the same carrier?
Maybe should I start a new question thread... Does xda uses that one question per thread rule? Don't remember to have seen it in the rules.
Thanks in advance!

All amaze devices basically have the same band, all the carriers we have here use the same band, so the choice of software is upto you since they basically have the same options, the only exception being T-Mobile, they are the only carrier that add in their own apps and modify a few things about the firmware and thanks to the htc/apple issue they changed the app association as well, so if you want the pure software with everything stock HTC the way it would be on an international version, then the Telus option would be best for you.
Good for the carrier specific software. Or in this case the absence of specificity
One detail is that Videotron installs a single app it's called "Portail Videotron" for renting and stream movies over the 4G network, a good way to have users using an enormous amount of data. But as long as the radio that comes with the Telus ROM is the same this app wich I don't even use I really don't care.
Will start a new thread for the other questions. Or won't if you think it won't be useful.

Ok so my questions are basically already in my first post. It is not that I don't understand the procedure to upgrade to ICS by dl the OTA, rename it to PH85IMG.zip and let hboot do the rest, it is just that I would like to be free to go back and forth between GB and ICS as I have always did with other phones. I can't see wich part of the system can be modified only by the OTA and not manually.
Edit: one may find it useless, it is just that I dislike much to be dependent on the OTA's

Due to signatures and encryption and in the cases of the things we just don't wanna touch like the radio, it's risky to mess with things like the radio and since we don't have a PH85IMG for every carrier like we do for tmobile we have to depend on the OTA files, in order for you to switch between GB and ICS as you wish you will have to s-off, that's the only way. Once you're s-off and super cid, you can upgrade, downgrade, swap hboots, swap roms, try out other carrier roms, all without restrictions.
Ok I tried to flash ICS EnergyRom with s-off, now that I am supercid I try once again.

Make sure you update your device to ICS first before you flash a custom rom, certain background files like radio, hboot etc have to be the ICS version for it to work.
That is what I don't like... But just to make it clear, with ICS version of hboot radio etc both GB and ICS are supported while with GB version ICS is not?
For now I feel a bit lazy so I will use the usual way and will look back at this at some moment.
Thanks

The Videotron RUU is supposed to work. You have to be in the bootloader wich you can access by removing your battery and then vol-down + power, relocked (not in recovery). I don't know if it has to be stock CID, don't think so.

That RUU is GB, not ICS since nobody every pulled the ICS OTA file, I don't have an amaze anymore to pull it so if any of you are on GB, kindly pull the file for other users.
Updating hboot only
How can I update only the hboot? And would an hboot from a different Canadian carrier still work? e.g. hboot from Telus and rom from Wind Mobile...

Rezound on International Use

I am going to go on a trip to the Cayman Islands in a little over a week and I was thinking about snagging an international VZW phone to use while I am there. Last time I went I carried a sim unlocked iPhone and it worked great by just picking up a prepaid card. I know the Rezound had the radios in the beginning but I am having a hard time figuring out how well it works and where it stands as of now thanks to updates and what not. My question is, how is the Rezound working on voice and data and if I should be looking at certain leaks for better performance? Any insight would be appreciated, and if you guys think there is a phone that will work better for me, feel free to make suggestions.

You're gonna get HSPA+ if your network provider uses the 2100mhz frequency band (almost every global provider does). Otherwise you'll have to stick to EDGE.
And yes, you do need recovery, though it's Armon Ra that is recommended not CWM. The later still got some bugs.

I flashed the ICS leak the 605.10 the one that's supposed to be the OTA one. I went to the Verizon store they said it should work but they don't know since its not technically official. It should work with the 4G SIM card. Is it unlocked for any sim or can I only use it with the Verizon SIM? I just didn't wanna post a thread about this.

Yes, the rezound is factory unlocked by default, you gotta enable gsm by either flashing a gsm rom (and be able to send texts on gsm for a change) or simply root and look for the stock gsm patch that works on that leak you're running.

1,000,000 Thanks to halfevildruid for his Photon Unlock GSM thread and Lokifish Marz for his All things MoPho! thread.
halfevildruid gave a 4 line "guide" to unlocking GSM on a photon.
1-SBF to stock base.
I dont want to get lost in his 50 pages and wanted to reach out to the Photon portion of this community for a slower...more detailed "How-To" for someone like me. LOL.
I can read. VERY well. And if there are guides to each step needed, I will read them and complete them.
So here is MY photon...
Basic, stock photon. Rooted. Bad ESN so I dont care to ever get back to sprint. I have a t-mobile but the phone is not as beautiful as my MoPho.
Can I PLEASE get a slower, slightly more detailed explanation of how to bring my MoPho back to life with my T-Mobile Sim?
Start at one.

so its easy once you do it once. 1st. unlock the boot loader (http://youtu.be/YCv4RzO2324). 2nd. root your device(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xAYkejI4CE&feature=share&list=PLDE378F92431C38DF). 2.2nd get rid of the sprint verification stuff. ( google it, you'll need root explorer to do so.) 3rd. install clockworkmod( the middle of the video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJJ0h4d-80&feature=share&list=PLDE378F92431C38DF]). 4th. find a rom that will work with this hack.( the link is on the instructions page.) and 5th. back up using clockworkmod. 6th. flash the gsm exploit first and then flash the new rom. this is how i did it and after trial and errrrrrrrrr i finally got it but i redid it and it took me about 2 hours on a single battery while taking care of my kids and cooking. hit me up if you got questions.

I cannot unlock the bootloader. I tried but keep getting an error people say comes from already having 2.3 on the phone. Im about to smash this phone into pieces. Can't sell with a bad ESN and can't turn it into another network...
Also your unlock bootloader link is some weird "Business analytics" video LOL.

If you have android version 2.3.4 you can unlock
if you have android version 2.3.5 it is not currently possible to unlock.

So what CAN I turn this phone into? I live in OHIO.
Revol Wireless a $50 a month unlimited everything prepaid plan, has the Photon as "Under Development" for flashing to their service.
PagePlus, a prepaid wireless in this state would not take the Photon.

that will depend if you can unlock. All you have articulated so far is that you have 2.3 which could include 2.3.4, 2.3.5, or another earlier version.

Im sorry i missed that, i thought i put the 5. didn't notice. I have 2.3.5
With 2.3.5 you can't do anything at the moment. That version is not unlockable as of now.

either find someone who will accept it on a CDMA network or sell it to someone who can use it outside of the US (for which the GSM is unlocked).

Maybe OP can take a look at this thread. [How-To] Unlock ATT/T-Mobile on 2.3.5 OTA[/URL] Not sure, but it might solve the problem.

That's what I did and am now using my MoPho on Tmobile network with PTEL.
On a side note you don't have to flash peetr's ROM I am just using the USC one from the first SBF(step 1).
I could not get peetr's ROM to work.

I think this is a nandroid:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2276446
EDIT: Sorry, I see that you meant recovery, not the nandroid backup.
Yeah. I have been searching for the stock recovery for this device. Haven't been able to find it.

i dont know if we can just flash the dev edition??? and then flash the tmobile ratio??
I have a t-mobile variant that I changed to the developer edition thru s-off but for some reason, I feel like my data speeds are slower. We are talking about 2-7mbps from 10-20mbps.... So I don't know if I need to flash something else to it.. Like the t-mobile radio.. But how would I do that?

Unless you specifically did that via RUU, the radios did not change. The ROMs don't contain the radio.

Yes, I changed the RUU to the one provided on the htc website. I also changed my Cid from its stock to Cid 11111111 hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to go back to complete stock, is that possible? If not, what is my alternative to enjoying the developer edition

Ouch, that may have flashed the radio. There are a couple of threads about flashing the TMO radio (attempting to get AWS on international ROMS). You could flash the radio from those, but I don't have a high confidence that those radio files contain everything needed to get AWS back onto a TMO phone that has been RUU.
Here is one of them, take a look:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247171
EDIT: Eventually TMO will release an update for 4.2.2, that will definitely take you back to stock.
Oh ok thanks a lot. Dan I didn't know it would do that .. I hope I didn't screw my phone up... But hopefully the RUU that htc will release in the future will be beneficiary to me.. Because I still have 3g, hspa+ and in sure I will get low

Yeah, be sure and read the requirements for flashing when it comes out. I think you have to go back to stock recovery, for one thing. Good luck!

[Q] M7ATT Turned To A M7WLV

HELLO!
Alright, this might be a difficult question to get a simple answer but I'm willing to learn a few new things from this in return!
The other day I decided to try out a new custom rom on my HTC One M7ATT, and with great success I was able to flash the latest Insert Coin rom running Android 4.4.2 and Sense 6. My problem formed when I tried to flash another rom to see whats out there. I decided that latest AOKP would be a nice choice. Once I was back into my recovery and ready to flash, I found out that my phone changed over to a M7WLV, and from what I found online, my phone now thinks that it's a HTC One from Sprint. In result, I can't flash the AOKP zip through TWRP
My questions are...
#1. How do I revert my M7WLV back into a M7ATT so that I could flash my roms, without going through RUU.
#2. How come there isn't really any information out there for this magical M7WLV
I totally appreciate any and all responses, and I'll be as informative as possible at working with anyone! Thanks! : )
What exactly is saying that model number?

The problem you will run into it that the hardware radio on the ATT phone is not the same as the Verizon phone. That being said there are some Verizon AWS bands used for data that the ATT phone won't support and there is no magic bullet for this issue.

So what I'm picking up from this is that when I flashed the rom that I originally wanted to use, I ended up flashing it along with a kernel that changed my radio over to Verizon from ATT. From what my bootloader is telling me, my radio's image 4A.14.3250.13
Since I'm still getting service through my carrier (ATT) I imagine that the M7WLV was due to something else
Would you think that it would be safe to try to wipe my phone back into it's original unlocked state and start over?
Thanks for getting back to me on this man!!
