How to get better data speeds on T-Mobile - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've done countless tests trying to tweak the AT&T Note to get better data speeds on T-Mobile, but it appears the best solution may be the simplest.
Tools required:
Propane torch
Hammer
9ft (3m) 18 gauge wire
Ok, forget the tools list, get some aluminum foil from your moms kitchen drawer and some sissors and start cutting some pieces like I show in the pics below. It's trial and error, but very easy and requires no special tools or mods. The foil size and placement is very subjective to how you hold your phone and the type of case you have. There may not be a one design for everyone, but I'm hoping with more folks testing we can get closer to optimal.
FYI, this works due to one of two priciples, detuning the stock antenna or by becoming a passive radiator. I dont have the tools or rf credentials to figure out which it is. Who really cares anyway?
I've attained dowload speeds of 9500kbps and upload speeds up to 2600kbps.
PS: Don't blame me if Mom yells at you for using all her foil!

i can't wait to try
this, i hope it works for me.

What's really funny is all the detailed effort I put into strategically placing strips right on the antenna foils underneath the screw cover to find the sweet spot, for it only to fail once the screw cover was re-installed. A real pain, considering how much better the external foil works. The key is to let the foil touch the metal shell under the back cover as you snap it back on.
I think this pretty much will prove that its not the radio, but in fact just the antenna design once and for all.

So how is this providing better download speeds? any improvement on aT&T side? or does it just improve signal?

u should show us the speeds before mod.

Omg.....sheer genius.....it really worked. I cant believe it. Im getting the same speeds as my T-Mobile T989 Galaxy S2 got again!
I normally struggled to hit 800kbps down and 30kbps up. Hitting over 2Mbps down and averaging 300-500kbps up now!!
It was such a simple solution!
Thank you!!!!!

and now i got 4-5mb down and 2mb up
im in ics 4.0.3 w/ gs ii leak radio

sounds exciting !!!
any others ???

will this work for at&T as well??

Ghetto but I think it actually works. On t-mobile btw.

hmm... another thing for my ToDo list when i get home (besides playing D3)
i'll post result after the "hardware mod"

The amazing thing is you dont even have to unscrew anything or glue anything.
Just lay the foil strips down and snap the back cover on
I did testing in several parts of my house. Even areas that previously didnt get almost any reception, were good.
Again. Amazing lol!

Definately not 4G

Windmobile can go up to as high as 8 Mbps down, and 300ish Kbps up on a SGS2 T989
but on my NOTE, the highest i ever got was 3 Mbps down, in the same spot were my T989 gets 8 Mbps down
so this thin foil trick will be very interesting if it works.
then i can finally dump my SGS2 and use my G.NOTE as a full time phone

IMPROVING RADIO SIGNAL 3g

MOD EDIT: This modification may very well harm your phone. Read this post for more details, read the entire thread, and most importantly, proceed with caution.
Okies guys heres the breakdown on reception, seems that Nexus S 4g's have antenna ports under battery cover, which seem to be ill placed. Your hand is over them all the time lol. One labeled G this is gps , w1 and w2 on volume side are for wifi and 4g, and r1 is 3g. Do these mods at your own risk, i take no responsibility for damages incurred. Take bread ties that is in your kitchen drawer strip back 1/8th to bare metal, ensure that it is straight before inserting it by the center of r1, use tape to hold in place. This gave me from a no bars 3g to solid 3bars. good luck, tell me if it works for you enjoy !!!

This is just my opinion. Nobody has to believe me. I am not an electronic engineer, but I do hold a radio license that is recognized by the FCC. This mod may very well work, but I think it could do more harm than good. I don't know for sure but these ports could be test points for factory tuning and repair. Adding a random or guessed length of wire to it "could" help the radio. There is also a good chance that you could fry the RF output final transistors in the phone. If the radio was strictly receiving through that port then maybe it wouldn't hurt the phone. If the phone transmits at the same frequency, this random length wire could throw the output section of the phone out of tuning. This wouldn't change anything except the input impedance from the output finals and the internal antenna. This circuit was designed to work together with a specified impedance, that we don't know the value of, and putting a better antenna on it from just guessing how long it needs to be at the frequency the phone is TX/rx is a risky thing. We don't know what the impedance of the antenna is supposed to be nor do we have the proper tools to measure antenna impedance between the transmitter and antenna to get the lowest standing wave ratio for the desired frequency. Also, what I have learned in testing antennas in a much lower frequency range than this phone is that low swr doesn't mean that the antenna will perform well. As they say in a hobby I have participated in is that you can make a wet noodle resonate but that doesn't mean you're going to "get out" with it. I'm already explaining things in a way that would go over the heads of many a lay person if they weren't into and studied in the hobby of amateur radio.
I'm not saying I know better or am better than anyone here. To make a long story short, if you don't have the right equipment, knowledge, and skill to do stuff like the mod is about, then I would HIGHLY suggest you not trying it. There is a very good chance that you could burn up the RF output transistors in the phone and then essentially you would turn the phone into a receive only radio like your FM radio. Putting a random (guessed) length wire on a receiver isn't going to hurt the electronics inside it, it will just make it receive better or worse. With a transceiver (a radio that can transmit and receive), this experiment has the possibility of burning out components inside the phone on the transmit side. I've blabbed enough. This is only my opinion on this, that's all...
All I have are plastic thingies that keep my bread soft and fresh...

Bad bad bad idea, it messed up my 3G radio antenna,no data at all data goes in and out, it won't let me update profile, sprint can't fix the problem w a hard reset of data.. gotta go in and get a new phone... told em didn't want the nexus anymore and im getting the Evo 3D.
This phones radio just sucks period! From what a rep at sprint told me... its not sprints data its the radio antenna itself poorly made.

okies this is an update to whether phone has blown up or wot . lol no it hasnt not gone to waste and yes mr radio expert Ocsar is correct in knowing bout rf and antenna length this is a test port to plug in antenna or equipment at a shop and test for tuning its is a direct connect to the transmitter/reciever, if u open ur phone u will see that the port actually goes down under the main board to the build in wire that is on pcb.The wire was cut in progression to get best reception, data rate improved slightly will have s/s of data after more testing
soz bout ur phone lucky, sounds like u may have pushed it down and in to port hard and broke the flat copper piece away that lies right under the port. good luck with your evo tho they rock

Honestly I never really suggest hardware mods, they usually do more harm then good..

I just droped it!

Ok my atrix just slid off my leg and hit the concrete now the screen is busted its unlocked and rooted but I still have insurance on it
The screen is only cracked on the lower leftside along the home buttons and stops before the search button still works ok just
Wondering if its better for me to replace the screen myself or take my chances and send it in on insureance
Im running cm7 Gina reflash something close to stock so it looks stock EXept for the unlocked on the 1rst screen
Hey,
Is everything still working on it? Only thing is the cracked screen? Then follow this:
EZ FIX:
1. Use Fruit Cakes or Pudding to go back to stock build.
2. Find your nearest At&t Device Support Center. (Don't worry the Atrix is always in stock there, scroll to the bottom of the page where it says step 3, find your state, a pdf will open with a list of DSC's in that state...)
3. Take it there and get it replaced!
Yes I'm on AT&T AND every thing still works fine just that its cracked down by the 4 little squares over past the home button but they all still work just looks ugly now problem is its unlocked and rooted if I take it in I might get some greef about that stuff from at&t
But I gess that's what all the warnings were about

No just suggesting to proof read, instead of making yourself look like the idiot. Little tip for ya! And good luck with the phone. Next time get a Otterbox case. Have been using them for years and they have saved my phones plenty of times. Even dropped a iPhone from 15 feet onto concrete and it was perfectly fine.
soke it in water and claim you dropped it in a puddle on a rainy day or something to that effect, now screen is broke and it will not turn on......problem solved.

thanks for the welcome!
do you know if all the stuff for the EU Galaxy Note is compatible with our US version?
I'm wondering because I have a htc hd2 and we used to have two forums , one for the TMO US hd2 and one for the EU Leo/hd2 and they ended up getting merged when xda got redesigned last time since they were practically the same phone, and I think apart from the EU version having a 3 button layout in front where the home button is a hard button and two capacitive on the sides , both phones hardware are the same, so I assume all the stuff for the EU phone will be compatible with ours.....ohhh can't wait, my wife knows the att rep at the store I went to and he let me play with one that he had gotten for himself just today and I already love it!!!! Gonna be at the att store right when they open tomorrow.
I have been using ICS since last november and even though I'll be going back to gingerbread, it will be fun to work our way back into ICS.

On the outside it appears that most cases, chargers and docks are the same. Inside it's quite different. The processor appears to be the biggest and makes all of the ROM's incompatible. I think there are enough differences that they will never merge the forums. I'm sure we'll have an ICS ROM before long for our phone. And I agree Android FTW!

slip over to the "international" version of the Samsung GT-N7000 Note forum once in a while. Just be careful of the ROM section...NONE will work on the at&t version, but the other areas might have a few good tips/tricks.
I've had mine about 3 months, coming from a Dell Streak, so the size wasn't a big WOW for me, but, the clear BRIGHT screen and speed of the processor was.
I stopped into a corporate store today, asked the sales drone at the door if they had the note, (around 3pm) she said over 2 dozen had already asked for it, but they wouldn't display it til Sunday. Asked if they had the accessories yet, they did, so I bought a home dock & black speck case.
When I bought it, the drone cashier asked if I was getting a Note Sunday, told him nope, got mine 3 months ago from Amazon. I didn't tell him that I didn't want to give up my grandfathered unlimited, or that I've been off contract about 3 months and didn't want to sign up for another one.

This is true to a point, there is an app that comes up when you first turn the phone on called AT&T Ready2Go. It supposedly helps you setup the phone using the computer. I got mine on friday, so I have a bit of experience with this. I personally just backed out of the app and set the phone up just like you normally would, so its about as easy as possible.

An added benefit of the "international" version is the greater development of ROMs and usually an earlier release of ICS.
What sold me on the AT&T version was the LTE. Even in a 3G area any LTE phone will be faster than any non LTE phone. I have both the Skyrocket and the Samsung Galaxy SII. Side by side I receive completely different data speeds. The Skyrocket will get up 18mb down on HSPA+ while the Galaxy SII will top out at 7 or 8mb on HSPA+
Also LTE will be going up in my area in the near future and I take advantage of it when I travel to the bay area for business.

Yep, I just cancelled the program and set it up manually like always I've been playing with mine and love it! Stock speed is awesome, picked up a candyshell case by speck and a screen protector, not sure if I like the screen protector, is the anti finger print / glare but in my opinion it losses a slight amount of crispness on the screen colors, but I might get used to it, definitely a beast of a device.

Has anyone had luck with antenna boosters? (Like the ones you put inside the battery)

Just started a new job, and my service really sucks here. I have a microcell, but I'm not at the point of being able to hook it up at work without a legitimate business need.
I'm about another month on my Thunderbolt before I move on to something else, but honestly, I'm not sure I'll keep Verizon if my phone won't work at the office.
Any ideas?
Oh, and I'm running the HTC extended battery.. I haven't had issues with the case before, but I guess I don't have a comparison yet with the stock cover..

I know exactly what you're talking about. I remember they used to actually work with those older flip phones, but not too sure about how it would work on a Thunderbolt.
If you're rooted, I would just recommend flashing a few radios to see if that improved your signal at all.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Yeah.. understood.. I'm running the only radios I can run on my ROM right now.. so.. just wondering if anyone had any other luck. I know the 4G antenna is specialized, so, improving that, probably not going to happen. But, I can maybe send one text with every 5 or 6 tries, so.. I might just have to bring my micro cell in and give it a try.
AFAIK, Antenna boosters do very little. Why not try some aluminum foil under the battery cover and see if that helps? You can copy one of those you see online.
NOTE: Glue or tape the foil to a bit of paper or plastic so it can't move around and short something out.

Verizon LG G3 Thread

I guess by default this is
Some key questions:
-Release date? Mid July is my guess.
-2/16 model or 3/32? Hoping the 3/32, or no buy.
-Wireless charging? Might be a separate purchase.
-Colors? I prefer black or gray.
-Will it be rootable? The Korean model roots easily, but VZW might have that "patched".
Then change the title and make it for us.
Hopefully they bring it real soon. Verizon is really slow in releasing new phones.
I personally can't wait I love the m8 I have now but it's such a waste of realistate

Yeah I might pick this up. My update is end of July. I want a rootable phone that isn't already dated. I love the S3. If either the S5 or G3 gets rooted and unlocked bootloader I will probably pick up that phone. I've never had an LG though

All carriers in the states which sells the G3 are not going to have wireless charging included, you have to buy another case for that.

All carriers in the states which sells the G3 are not going to have wireless charging included, you have to buy another case for that.
They said <50$, which sucks.

I was initially interested in wireless charging my G2 when I first got it. But then I found out how excellent the battery is on it and I have NO trouble plugging it in overnight - the only time I've ever had to worry about charging it, and even if I forgot, I still have had at least 30% of a battery to start the next day.
As always, YMMV.

Dang it. A wireless charging back plate? If it's like an extra 20 $30 purchase and it replaces the battery cover I'm fine with that. but, if I have to put a case on it to Wireless charge it, screw that. Wireless charging has become a massive factor in my phone purchases. I've built my own little ecosystem around that and I'm not giving it up lol

That and knock on/off are the two top ones for me. I can't see going backwards.

How have you implemented wireless charging? I'm curious to get a phone with it but I haven't thought of any very useful implementations of it.
I bought the HTC One Max a couple days ago and I'm not a fan. My Note 2 had a home button, along with back and menu keys. Now I have to wake my One with the power button and if I use a custom launcher like Apex, I have no access to "recent apps" unless I configure the home key to use that. The camera is feature rich, but only 4 mp, but battery life is excellent as is the sound from the front-facing speakers. I also miss my email widget (although a custom rom would fix some of these complaints).
The knock to wake and a full set of softkeys on the G3, along with the laser camera look like compelling features to me. Even tho I have a case and holster (Amazon), I think I'll probably return my One.

The car dock I have is wireless Charing. Mix that with bt audio and it's nice. Start the car and go. Phones Charing and radio is ready. I have a pad inbeded in my nightstand and coffie table. if you combine that with how good the g2 battery is. The phone never needs to be plugged in.

Ready to get mine. The S3 has been great, really nearly the perfect device. I might be shocked by the G3 size at first but I'll get use to it. Having to find a decent Verizon rep that will let me keep my unlimited will be a hassle again. I use 75-95 gbs a month so its needed.

Yea. You're the reason unlimited is gone. People abusing the network make it hard for everyone

One day in the future we will look back and say, "you remember when we used to have data caps?" Seriously, how long can they possibly keep this stupid limited data model in today's connected world. It's ridiculous.

What model/make is that? Does it work well or interfere with anything?

Agreed on the data cap comment. The same thing will happen that happened with text messaging.
The car dock is the LG puck car dock. The link below has some good pictures of what it is. mine is completely molded into the car though. I like to make things look a little custom lol

It's not abuse, he just happens to be a heavy user. The justification networks use for implementing data caps is completely fabricated. Many people with the technical knowledge have commented on this. Data caps are just another revenue source for network operators, same goes for ISPs as well.
