[Q] Can't figure out how to install APKs on my NT - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I used that SD card method to root (apparently) my 8GB NT.
I got android market/google play, etc. and changed my N button to show a different home page, so I guess it is rooted, right?
Anyway, I have a bunch of APKs I want to install, so I copied them over to my NT but when I go into the download folder and click on them it says that the Nook can't read that type of file or something...so I can't install the packages.
One way I read that it can be done is to email the APKs as attachments and then install them through gMail. That actually worked for the smaller APKs, but for larger ones that can't be attached to email, I'm stuck.
Is there another program I need to use to open the APKs to install them or something? I did get the box checked to allow installation of 3rd party apps, but I just don't know how to install them on this thing. On my other tablet (Viewsonic gTab) I just copied them over to the SD card and then used file manager and clicked on them...not so here.
Thanks,
P

File manager
You might try using a different file manager, because it sounds like whichever file manager you are using on the NT isn't starting the apk installer.
If you've got the Play store, downloading one should be easy. I know Astro is a fairly popular one.

I rooted my 8GB, and never got any APK's to side load. I took mine back, bought the 16Gb, and have been happy with it (CM7). Outside of root I don't think you can do much more with the 8GB version.

New File Manager Fixed Problem
I downloaded Astro, which looked nice but for some reason wouldn't work for me. It showed all of the APK files I put on my microSD, but when I clicked on them it did nothing...
So I downloaded another file manager...EX something I think? And it works perfectly. It shows the folders, I go in and tap on the APP or GAME icon for the APK, and it prompts me to install it, etc.
So, for anyone unsure, the 8GB NT is able to be side loaded with any APK that the 16GB is able to load...maybe it is a bit harder or more complicated, but it can still easily be done if you have the right programs on there.
I'll start a thread with exactly what I did and what I needed to load if it would be helpful.

[Q] SD card and GoLauncher question

I'm a new forum member and a relative noob when it comes to all things Android and Tablets and Nook Tablets. I have a an unrooted Nook Tablet and need help with a few things, please.
1: I use GoLauncher as my launcher and I have all my apps in folders on my homke screen, but the folder icons are small. Any way to make them larger?
2: How do you install an app to the sd card. When I download an app it loads into the Nook. Also, how do you install an app from the sd card?
3: When I access my sd card and I long press a folder the only option I get is to delete the file. The Nook manual says that a menu should pop up.
4: Also,I see no "app" folder on my sd card. Where is it?
Thanks for any help as my old brain does not work like it used to. Also, thanks for all the info contributed by everybody that I've already gleaned from this forum.
Jim
Since you are not rooted (and neither am I), I will assume you followed instructions to install basic apps like the launcher and a file manager by emailing them to yourself. I will also assume you have installed an sdcard. The file manager will allow you to explore the contents of the card. Find a folder called MyFiles or similar. This is where to pur downloaded apk files.
Use your desktop computer to find and download apk files. Now move the files from your desktop to the Nook. Some folks will plug the Nook into the computer, navigate, and drag and drop from there. Others, like myself, will do it wirelessly via Dropbox, FTP or a simple WiFi client. Search for "WiFi File Transfer apk" to do it this way.
Once the apk is in the Nook, use a file manager to navigate to it, tap on it and the package installer should pop up. Install. If the package manager offers to move the app to the sdcard, do it.
BTW, my "old brain" is 69. Find me on Facebook "Don Birdsall" and I'll help you more.

[Q] Sideloading Archiving and Unarchiving?

I've only started trying to sideload after only being rooted with the CWM Root.. I've watched the tutorials from Albert on Youtube and have read numerous posts on here on sideloading, If I'm only missing a program or something I'm gonna be a little embarrassed but right now I can't seem to get any APK to install on my NT..
So far I have downloaded the ES File Explorer, I've sent my APK files over to a file that I have created to store them and have tried to open them using the ES File Explorer, and I keep getting the same error ("Unable to Install" This application was not able to instal on your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again.) Then my APK file is no longer on my tablet.. I have to reload it from the PC and try again.. with the same results.
Also I have tried the download method for the APK files in which he showed with the same error and results..
If you have seen this and is easy I applogize for the incovenience, but I have been unable to find this on the forums..
Thank you Much..
You are opening it with the wrong package installer, B&N has their own package installer, and it's being opened with that instead of the Android one.
The bigger problem is once it's viewed as "incompatible" it's deleted by B&N's so it would need to be put back on the device.
Your default may be set incorrectly if you don't get a prompt to ask which package installer.

That would make sense that I'm opening it with the wrong installer. Where am I going to find the other package installers and set them as my default??
Also I've Downloaded APK installers from the Android Market and hae tried those as well but getting incompatible errors with those as well..

not installing .apk's

My Sprint Motorola Photon is not letting me install any .apk files. I have checked the boxes to allow installing from unverified sources and debugging mode, and even tried cycling the check box and retrying the install. I've tried installing the .apk from the phones memory and also tried installing the file from an sd card in the phone. I tried downloading astro file explorer, es file explorer, and some apk manager app off the app store all with no luck. It always does the same thing, will bring up the installation screen for the .apk, but will not respond to any touches on the 'install' button. Everything else works and lets me tap all over the screen, but the grey rectangle install button will not work, the 'cancel' button next to it always works though. This has become very frustrating for me. I just paid $15 to upgrade a trial app and now can't install it because it is a new .apk file for the new full app.
Not compatible. IMO

Also, forgot to mention that I've tried several app .apk's and all of them give the same fore mentioned results. So I don't believe it is the actual .apk file I'm using.

[Q] I try to install an APK but it tells me I don't have enough space

So i'm trying to install a 3MB APK (with 5.6 gigs of internal storage left) and I get a message that I can't install the APK due to lack of space. I download an APK of a later version and the same thing happens. To make sure my phone isn't messed up, I download another APK (of another program) and it installs fine. Is there a reason why this specific app (SUPERGNES) just isn't installing on my phone?

Do you have installed the app before? So the chances are that it is not uninstalled correctly.
So do this-:
If you have root explorer, go to /data folder and search with the app name that should not be supergnes, it should be like com.supergnes....(idk exactly). When the search finishes you should get some files, delete those files amd you will be ok to go
And to know the exact name do this- from the root explorer view the apps apk ans see the manifest file in that apk therw a name will be written- search for that name.
Press thanks if that helped

Check if this is the reason

Some apks require more space once they are installed. The package actually is a gzip package. Another thing may be is the phone requires some memory when expanding the package and that leaves no memory for the package. See if you can install the app once you have some where around 10 to 20 MB of free space on your device
