Will you embrace the NFC abilities? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm planning on buying some pre formatted tags for around the house, car & at work.
Hell I might keep a tag in one of my light jackets.
I'll be using this a hell of a lot more than the 3D on my current EVO.
More on Android+NFC (how it works):

Where to get NFC Tags for your EVO LTE:

Looks fun. Probably useful for the car/nightstand/stroller. Will have to think about how to work it.

I'm waiting to see more of what people come up with.
This is my first android/smartphone so I'll have plenty to play with for a while.
Just looking at "Tasker" seems like I can do everything based on triggers and events. If those end up being cumbersome, NFC tags it is!

I will embrace! With open arms

I sure the F will!

I'm gonna make tags and put them everywhere for no reason. Its gonna be fun. Maybe someone can make a scavenger hunt type game out of them. Each tag you scan gives you GPS coordinates or gives you a link to a picture and you have to find out where it was taken....the possiblities are endless.

Ooo..wow, that is a great idea!
You could make a romantic scavenger hunt or even something like "The Amazing Race" !!! People could hit the "way points" with a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type prompt, etc.
Okay, you just sold me, I'm in
p.s. I could also back this up with QR codes for non NFC peeps.

Looks awesome... Will be using!!!

I wish I knew how to develope apps cause I would be all over that idea.

I got a nexus s 4g so I used it a bit. Google wallet at MacDonald's and the PayPal app supports it.

I've never tried this, does it work at most places? Does your debit card have to support it, so confused about this.. Like if I go through Mcdonalds drive thru do I have to hand the person my phone? lol

I think ill embrace my patented foot up Sprint's butt technology if I don't get a solid release date for Sprint in store pre-orders by the end of today.

Heck yes I will. Already ordered some of those tags.

I wouldn't fret, you (not the drive thru people, never give them the phone ) hold it over the reader (Most stores have them, al least in my exp (Phily/NYC) & the app will auto open for your prompts.
Mastercard, Visa & all of the others are supported.

I already have some tags in my hand right now (just got them in the mail). Once I get my LTE, I will program a few for uses. So far I have:
Car:
Turn WiFi on/off
Turn Bluetooth on/off
Open/close music app
Keychain that I should be getting:
Either personal info so I can just send it to another phone or open my fire dept app... Haven't decided yet.
Workout:
Turn media volume up/down
Open/close music app
Play a playlist (if I can)
Bike:
Turn alert volume down/up
Turn media volume up/down
Launch/kill Move
I have a few more ideas but I wont bore you with them.
Android Police has an article that shows you how to program a chip and some of the tasks you can do. I got my tags from TagsForDroid.com.

I'll be interested to see if the NFC radio uses any significant power,
and if it can be turned off.
If I'd have to turn it on every time I wanted to use it, that'd completely defeat the purpose.
Also, Google Wallet won't work on a rooted phone :-(
Right now the only card choices are *certain* Citi Mastercards, or a pre-loaded debit card. Google was doing a deal where for trying it out, they'd give you a $50 wallet credit - I'm not sure if they're still offering that, but if so it seems worth giving it a try.

Link to the EVO 3D manual (Now ZIP file in post #1)

Since the Sprint site is down at the moment, I've attached the manual to this post
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually, there was no need for the cloak and dagger, the whole support page is up:
http://support.sprint.com/support/device/HTC/HTC_EVOtrade_3D-dvc5460001prd
--------------------------------------------------------------------
And now it's live! Enjoy!
http://support.sprint.com/global/pdf/user_guides/htc/evo_3d/htc_evo_3d_ug.pdf
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I was trying to find a link to the EVO 3D manual (I figured it would be up by now), but I couldn't find one. Being bored on a Saturday night (wife and kids are visiting her folks out of country - sad bachelor month for me), I decided to see if I could track it down. I found the link for the EVO 4G manual, and started playing around with permutations of it. I got a bunch of page errors on everything I tried except this one:
http://support.sprint.com/global/pdf/user_guides/htc/evo_3d/htc_evo_3d_ug.pdf
It leads to a placeholder PDF for now, but I'm pretty sure this will be the link when it goes live (my guess is Monday night or Tuesday).
It's sad, but I still like to read the manuals

BTW, am I crazy or is there really no mention of the MHL/HDMI usage for this phone?
correct me if im wrong but the manual does include swype in this, this means its pre-installed?
I think I might have solved the mystery of the 2 GB micro SD card - sloppy copy editing. The information on the microSD card is in section 2.G. The section heading looks like this:
2G. microSD Card
I bet the technical writer was in a hurry and just saw a 2 GB microSD card?
It's a theory, anyway
Anyone notice the amount of memory it shows in the screenshot?
Page 29 screenshot on the right only shows 554MB of "Total Memory". Wonder when they took that one... being that my EVO shows 405MB in the same menu.

Hey edyts I started looking at some NFC apps on the market and had a question for you.
How do you even set up an NFC tag?
Where would I get something like that to set up a tag for one of these apps to recognize?
Thanks.
Thats sorta what im trying to figure out, would like to have one, say in car on seatbelt so i could touch it and it would link my handsfree, or on bedside table to put it on vibrate ect. Apparantley these tags can be programmed to do such things but i cant find info on how thats done.
EDIT, from what ive gathered, the nfc tags are powered from your phone when its close, so id assume youd program them throught your phone and obviously and app.
another EDIT lol The nfc task launcher paid version, that mobilla mentioned, has the ability to program the tags, theres a catch howerever you need to buy preformatted tags and reprogram them, not sure where to get those. Thanks mobilla.
NFC Task launcher has the ability to write to NFC tags, there are also a couple other apps on the market that allow you to write to them (thought i haven't tried any of them).
There are links on the developer's webpage for purchasing NFC tags (the link is also in the menu in the app) jwksoftware.com/nfc-tags.
There are some (at least there WERE) threads regarding this (NFC tags) in the Nexus S themes and apps forum. As the NS was the first Android phone released with NFC capabilities. The only problem is compatibility between that/those app(s) and the Amaze....but this is XDA and maybe those threads can answer some questions.
Definitely NOT being sent from my HTC Amaze4G until Christmas Day.....
from what i understand about NFC (Near Field Communications) its a communication protocol between two devices near to each other for example Android Beam coming with ICS also it will be used with google wallet which will allow you to pay for things using your phone vs your debit/credit card. The tag system I would guess and this is just a guess would be to label those types of uses for example my mastercard or what not. I haven't read anything that explains how NFC technology would be used like a GPS locator.
not trying to use it as a locater. Just trying to use the tags in different locations to set my phone to different states, or settings if i may. So if im at work for example, i never hear or feel my phone when i get a notification, also there is WiFi and i have a Bluetooth speaker there. So id like to tap the tag, turn off vibrate, mute sound, turn on Bluetooth and hook to speaker, turn of cell radio and turn on WiFi and hook up to network. All done with NFC, that blackberry video i linked has a video of it doing some of those features, i want that for my amaze.
An NFC tag is a passive NFC device, powered by the NFC field of this Android device while it is in range. Tag's can come in many forms, such as stickers, cards, key fobs, or even embedded in a more sophisticated device.
Tags can have a wide range of capabilities. Simple tags just offer read/write semantics, and contain some one time programmable areas to make read-only. More complex tags offer math operations and per-sector access control and authentication. The most sophisticated tags contain operating environments allowing complex interactions with the code executing on the tag. Use TagTechnology classes to access a broad range of capabilities available in NFC tags. -android developers

I just received my NFC tags. Man, they are awesome! I programmed one that I'm going to put by the door that leads in to the garage. I have it set to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth. It works great!
I'm using NFC Task Launcher to program the tags. The app is very simple to use. I'm going to program more for the car, work and nightstand.
I also ordered custom stickers that I'm going to put on them. I ordered from StickerYou.com. The stickers will have the android on a skateboard. I'll post more pics when I get them.
I highly recommend NFC tags!

You shouldn't. You can save a piece of Maps, I'm not sure how, but it should be possible so you can stay offline while testing.
Imho you should. Google maps be damned, damn 3G hipster navigator.
Go oldschool with offline maps, safest way to go.
Why would you buy a tablet for gps navigation in your car? My phone has very good GPS and has never failed me. But if I would depend on it on a daily basis i would get a device that was made exactly for that.
The GPS in the Prime is nice to have and i'm sure it will work for most tasks like adding location to a foto and stuff like that. Or telling me we're I am while watching a map in a city.
But yeah maybe i'm strange^^ I really dont think this is a big issue and i'd like to add that my phone (DesireHD) had similar problems when i first bought it. Now there has been several radio updates and now i always get a lock in 15secs and it almost never drops unless there is a tunnel or something.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion but if you're not buying the prime because of this why did you even want it in the first place?
People always assume you have a phone with GPS in it.. call me old fashioned, but I dont.
I was looking forward to having something decent to navigate with, but Asus dropped the ball on their promises.
And I dont need it on a daily basis, that's exactly why I was looking forward to the GPS on this pad.
Its nice to have but I wouldn't buy an expensive device designed specifically for that task for it.
Basically when Asus told us GPS is useless for navigating,
it felt like they were telling me to buy a tank if I want to offroad because your new ATV cant.

You can save, at least on Nexus S. The option in settings is something like "Maps caching", enable it and then "drive" around the screen with your finger, after that those downloaded maps will be available offline
yeah use google maps to make sure it's charting your path correctly, and not thinking you're driving through trees and houses

The First Rule of Secure Box is You Do Not Talk About Secure Box

Good Day Everyone
First off let me start by saying im on a Evo 4G LTE running Fresh LTE 5.2.1 by Flipz.
(Love it...other than this problem I am having)
What is this "Move to Secure Box" option when you long press on a text message?
I have searched both google and xda-devs looking for answers and it seems like people are putting this in their roms but provide no information about it.
I received some very important text messages yesterday. And as of last night they were gone. So I find out my daughter was playing with my phone. Moving items to a "secure box"
Where is this secure box? These messages were a key piece of evidence in a lawsuit and now they are gone.
If I cant find them, i'm out 10 grand. Any assistance at this point would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

SteelH its not in form of money, It's my truck and some dumb broad who stole the title and now I can't get it registered.
So perhaps I should have said I lose my ride if I lose this case. But if you ever find yourself in PA let me know I'd gladly buy you ten beers for your help

It's all good, glad it helps. The make several locks under /settings/security/ that come in handy for little fingers. PIN works well

Suggestion: Don't get married if you want an affair already and you're not even married yet.

AT&T HTC One Unboxing video

Box is the same as the international version. Minus the AT&T logo. Plus comes with the unbranded beats/HTC headphones
http://youtu.be/NOb9PTgpMyk
I have the Dev version on order, but nice to see AT&T keep the same packaging and accessories. 2 thumbs up!
I wish the dev edition I just ordered came with the headset but HTC confirmed via email that they do not. Kinda sucks but I'm still stoked to be getting it.

You sure they wasn't talking about the beats that some UK users was getting ?
The Developer Edition doesn't come with any headset whatsoever. When I preordered I noticed that no headset was listed under what comes in the box. So I proceeded to contact HTC which responded that the phone does not come with any headset. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the listing is wrong as well as the HTC employee but I doubt it. Maybe if enough of us complain once we get the phone and find no headset, they'll send us a free pair :wishful thinking:

AT&T also left in all of the dev/international features even though they usually remove some, like FM radio, voice recorder and flashlight. If I can stick all of the AT&T shortcuts into a folder and then hide the folder somewhere I'll be happy.
Unfortunately HTC's easy setup utility won't work because ATT has their own. In spite of that, and the usual bloat, it seems ATT did right by this phone.
Does anybody know if HTC's offer of 25GB Dropbox space still applies with an ATT contract phone?

No, but I know for the AT&T S 3 they found a workaround. The same thing might happen here.

Hey guys.....Played with the phone today at work.( Which by the way is tough. If you think waiting for the phone is hard, try having it in the next room over and not being able to buy it.) All of AT&T's app shortcuts come packaged in a folder when you first turn off the phone. It also looks like they can be disabled fairly easily as well.
I'll try to check on the Dropbox offer tomorrow. I know you still got the 25 GB's with the HTC One X last year, so I'm hoping the same is true for this device as well. Most corporate stores should have some working HTC Ones out on the sales floor tomorrow as well with some advertising for pre orders, if anyone want's to get some hands on time.
Cool! thx for that.
