Can't send MMS w/o enabling data - HTC Amaze 4G

Hey, all!
Ever since i've picked up the amaze I've been having a mms bug. Can't send any pics w/o enabling the data first. When i hit send, it does display the 4g icon (i'm on stock ics, but it happened on gb as well), but in a minute or two the error message comes in. Once i enable the data and hit retry, it goes out smooth.
I haven't updated to a new sim-card yet (wi-fi calling wouldn't work on gb with the old one, but ics doesn't seem to mind), not sure if that's something to look into.
Let me know if anyone has any ideas
Thank you!

Mms is a data-reliant service, you need data enabled to send or receive. Thus...I would not classify this as a bug...

i've never had a phone that did this. i think i know what the problem is: APN settings for mms.

Downloaded APN Manager and checked my settings with it. Some are not correct. However, this app doesn't work with ICS. Any suggestions on how to change the apn settings on a stock (s-on) ics?

was it hard to just say you can click on the "mobile network" icon to bring up the settings tab vs the switch, as i had no idea it worked like that now? thank you.
Update: still no dice with the correct settings. 4g icons shows up and then i get the delivery error message. once the data is forced enabled from the drop-down, it's golden. very strange.

Without data enabled, you will not receive nor be able to send out mms. No way around it.

i understand that, but when sending mms, there should be a trigger (which i can tell it tries to do when i see the 4g icon appear right after hitting "send", except for nothing happens) for the mms data to be enabled just for the time it takes to send a particular mms, otherwise, what's the point to always have data enabled? none of the smartphones i've had, had this happen (sensation included).

Go into your apn settings and delete it or simply reset to default, it should auto download the correct settings, no idea how to make mms work WITHOUT data being enabled, I find that odd to be honest, but if it worked on GB, then I think you guys should stick to GB, just to save yourself some dollars.

It has been a while russianbear.. Anywho, what previous people have said is true, if you actually have data DISABLED, it won't come on for anything(how would the phone decide you want it on for MMS, but not something else like browser?). I used to roll around with data disabled a bit when I had gingerbread, so I can confirm it was the exact same way - you had to enable data to send mms - if it was off, nothing data related would work.
If you aren't worried so much about how FAST is sends MMS, you could always set it to 2g only, then your phone simply couldn't send much data at all.. or an awesome feature built into ICS - go to system settings then click usage - turn on set data usage limit, and set it REALLY low - this will keep ANYTHING that uses background data from sending/receiving, but any app you use in the FOREGROUND will work like normal - open browser or youtube and they would work like normal..
I'm sure there's another trick that would work, but I need more coffee.. good to see you again russianbear.

hey, man good to see you as well.
i'm sure i'm not tripping when saying you don't actually need to physically enable the data connection for it to send mms (none of my prior devices needed to) i've downloaded go sms pro and it works like the stock app should - i don't need to enable anything to send mms now (all options in that app are stock also). not a deal-braker to me, but still strange.

LOL, that may be why I didn't have issues.. I hate the stock messaging app, so I always used gosms. I'm not sure why you would use that ugly HTC goodness anyways, lol. Good to have you back bro

After much time trying to have MMS working without the data connection being active, I found that putting only "mms" in the APN Type setting does the trick (don't forget to save the settings before exiting the APN settings screen). The problem is that the setting is not applied without RESTARTING the device! So, change the setting to "mms", save, and restart.
You need to have the "Data active" option ticked, but there will (should) be no data connection for internet.
PS: I did this in another device, not the HTC Amaze. But it probably also works for you guys.

i've tried mms only, but still nada. it's ok though, i like go sms app anyway

Actually I send MMS and the message leaves but the person who receives the MMS gets an empty MMS message.
After much playing around with the device, I discovered that inserting a picture using gallery or the explorer that comes with the Amaze are all fail.
The only way I'm able to successfully send messages is inserting the image using ROOT Explorer. When I send MMS the person no longer gets empty MMS messages.
Now I'm using the CapcomCE ROM and it happened on SpeedROM 7.5
I downloaded the Gallery ICS from market and its the same story.
So basically if I insert pictures to send through MMS I have to use the Root Explorer or else the MMS messages are sent empty.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

[Q] AT&T MMS issues

Hi all,
I want to preface this by saying I've searched the forums, and have not been able to find my specific circumstance addressed. I'm having a problem where I can receive MMS just fine, but I cannot send any MMS from my Galaxy S2 on KE7 with KE4 modem. I'm using AT&T in the USA, and came from an iPhone 3GS. I'm still on the iPhone unlimited data plan (haven't gotten around to switching to a 4G plan yet). MMS always worked just fine on my iPhone, both ways.
When I go to send an MMS, it just keeps trying to send the message forever. I initially see some data activity in the status bar, but it quits after about 5-6 seconds. The message just sits trying to send unless I delete it manually.
Anyone know why this would be occurring? Help is greatly appreciated!

I am having the exact same problem, but I can't even get receiving mms to work. The message comes through but fails to download. I have tried multiple apn settings but nothing works.
Just curious, but are you guys using wifi when trying to send or receive the mms? Data HAS to be on for mms to work, if I'm not mistaken..

I've tried using with WiFi and without...neither one works. Again, I can receive just fine, just not send.
Here I think is your answer.
If you say for example take a picture or video and then within the Camera app try and send either one as a Message, the MMS will fail IF you have the Camera app set to save to Memory Card.
If you change the Camera app to save to phone, then you can take a 8 MP picture and send it as a MMS from the camera app and it will resize and send.
I have mine set to save to memory card, so after you take a pic, you have to go into Gallery and find the picture, then send the exact same 8MP shot as a Message and this time the GS2 will correctly resize and send it.
I'd say its some bug having to do with saving pictures and video to the memory card, but the above way will get you a MMS to send.
Thanks for the info, but I'm pretty sure that's not my problem. I don't even have an external SD card on my phone, and when I go to the Camera options to change storage location, it's greyed out (can't change it), I assume because I have no other option since I don't have an external SD card installed.
Also, when I have tried sending pics via MMS, Handcent will resize the pic, but it still won't send it. BTW, I have tried sending MMS with the stock messaging app, and that doesn't work either...just in case anyone thought it might be Handcent with the problem.
Under Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Network Mode, do you have WCDMA Ony checked, or GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode) checked?
I found that if I had WCDMA Only checked, I couldn't get MMS messages to work consistently at all.
I have Auto Mode checked.
bump....need MMS to work. help?
check your MMS message center settings. You can access it within the MMS app>menu>settings.
I had this exact same problem when I updated my modem and found out the reason I couldn't send messages because the Message Center phone number was removed.
The correct one for AT&T is +1312349810. Make sure to put the + there.
Edit: NM sounds like your prob is mms only. I have had this problem with my old vibrant galaxy S1 too. The problem was because of the way phone numbers were formatted. For what it's worth I fixed that problem by editing the contact so that their phone numbers are exactly 10 consecutive digits (3 digit area code + the number) without any hyphens or marks ie: 2382819391. No leading 1's, etc. Not sure why it happens but seems to fix it for me.
I haven't had this issue with my SGS2 though.

[Q] Is anyone else unable to send pictures in their text messages?

Whenever I send a picture in a mms it spends a long time "queued for sending" then it fails. I've verified my APN settings. Are other people able to send pictures with no problem?
i havent had this issue, try resetting your APN.

Hi , I've had that problem for a few weeks now, despite that I have a separate APN set up solely for MMS (read somewhere sometime agao that its best to have 2 APNs, one with all of the necessary settings for intenet etc and then one optimised for MMS, keeping the the internet one tagged as your main live/enabled APN, the phone will still se the MMS apparently). I've checked my settings, and nothing has changed since when I was last able to send them, however I have to admit I don't use MMS very often and I can't really remember for sure exactly when I was last able to send an MMS successfully.

MMS Problems with Lollipop?

OK so just about every Lollipop ROM I run I find myself having a weird MMS problem where it takes a forever (1-3 min) to send just one message. And it's not even a picture, just plain old group message. All my APN's are set correct so it's not that.
Anyone else having the same problems?
Or does everyone have group messages sending instantly? I need to know so I can try to fix it.

Quoted right from the OP - "All my APN's are set correct so it's not that". Seems like it's not that. I am also having this problem, however I've only noticed it while my wifi is on (my data is constantly on, before anyone asks). If I turn off my wifi, and then reboot, things send instantly.
That's the main issue, the other is bluetooth reconnectivity, I couldn't use ASOP Android 5. Sometimes it would never send and yes, the APN was set correct.
"Stock" Lollipop has no such issue.
I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect (I haven't played around with it too much), but I know appear to send and receive MMS messages muuch faster after making the changes. There were a few differences between the recommended settings and what we're included with my ROM (all the port numbers).

MMS Issues - FIXED!!!

Edit: Found a fix for this.
I downloaded about 6 different texting apps and the only one that fixed my MMS issues was Textra, and I had to configure it in a very specific way.
Downloaded Textra
MMS
Use MMS for Group Chats = CHECKED
MMS Settings
Prefer WiFi = Unchecked
Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED
T-Mobile WiFi Calling Fix = Unchecked
APN Settings
Manually Configure APN = CHECKED
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: *leave blank*
MMS Proxy Port: 80
Save the settings and reboot your device and test it out.
I tried to do similar settings on other texting apps but none of them fixed my MMS issues. Now with Textra they send super smoothly. Some apps won't even let you configure the APN. I tried this in Handcent and GoSMS and it didn't work. I also can't change the default APN settings within the phone.
I believe the specific thing that got this to work was the Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED option in Textra.
Thanks to all in the thread that previously mentioned using Textra!
The Z3V is now a perfect phone LOL
Original Post was here:
Wondering if anyone else runs into MMS issues on their Z3V? Mine is incredibly slow at both sending/receiving MMS. I am using the Verizon Messages App, I have tried almost every other Messaging app out there (Handcent, Textra, GoSMS, etc...) and none of them solve the problem.
Verizon Messages had potential as the Tablet/PC versions are able to use MMS over a Data/Wifi connection (rather than the MMS-specific data). Unfortunately, on the phone versions of the app, it only seeks through data/wifi if a regular MMS-data connection is not available. I've contacted VZW about this issue before and they've tried escalating my case and I've spoken to developers and voiced my concerns. Still no fix unfortunately.
I thought the MMS issues were inherent to VZW's network, however, iPhone users have absolutely no problem receiving or sending MMS from/to Android users. (Obviously when they send to iPhone users it uses data through iMessage).
The poor MMS performance makes group-texting very frustrating with my friends. Yes, there are alternatives like whatsapp, hangouts, that use data, but that forces other users to download those apps. (And Hangouts is super broken as is).
Wondering if anyone has figured out a solution for getting lag-free group messaging/MMS on their Z3v? I've also tried messing with the APN settings but everything is grayed out.
On another note, I will randomly get messages "No APN present on device", anyone else get those?

I use textra and group text alot. When I'm in a place with good cell service group texts are great. However at my parents house where the service is not good as in barely can make phone calls, group texts come in bunches. Also get the apn error message and I tap the notification and all the texts come through.
I use regular text messaging app and I've never experienced problems. Maybe do a quick reboot to see if it helps?

No a reboot does not fix the issue. Maybe it's the area I'm in (Los Angeles County) that is dealing with a ton of bandwidth? But it still doesn't explain why iPhone users are able to use MMS just fine.
VZW has even gone as far as sending me a beta version of their newer app to try to run some testing, but that ended up getting replaced with a newer release of which nothing was fixed.
I have a Z3 from Tmobile and sometimes I can't download MMS...... or don't recieve them until much later. Sometimes I only recieve the replies from people, not the original sender.
I've never had a phone that didn't have a hickup or two or three with MMS from time to time. My opinion it has much less to do with the app or phone than it does with the current status of the network.

If that's the case, why do iPhone users have no problems with their MMS on verizon? And no I'm not referring to iMessage. I mean when they are sending/receiving group texts to Android users.
We can have our phones side by side, and the iPhone users will receive the group message a whole minute faster than us android users. And yes the original message was sent from an android device.

Ha, well if iPhone never has problems then you proved my generalized opinion on the matter wrong. My apologies. I've honestly never owned an iPhone and used it as my daily driver, much less time tested it against Androids. I have however been technical support for iPhones in my family and to say there are never issues is not exactly true either, it's just much less often when it comes to MMS.

No need to apologize, you're correct, an iPhone isn't going to be perfect either. While they do run into their occasional hiccups with MMS, our Android hiccups seem to be constant. It's quite frustrating to be on a group text with 5+ friends and the Android users are getting incredibly delayed messages. By the time the messages come in, the topic of conversation has past.
It just makes me wonder, what about Android devices (on VZW at least) is causing the craptastic MMS issues that iPhones don't seem to have a problem with. Although these MMS issues are infuriating, it's not enough to make me switch to an iPhone. There are just too many features I love on the z3v (and Android in general).
I have to post here so I can say I have had an online conversation with ConanOBrien.
My wife has problems with her Z3v, but I don't, we can get the same MMS message and I will have no problems and hers will indicate it couldn't download the MMS . Same with sending hers has a problem mine doesn't, same room feet away from each other.
I blame an app, I have very few apps but she has a few games, I think maybe one may be accessing her MMS and causing a problem, only logical answer I can think of.
I avoid the Verizon default SMS. I switched the google messenger app for my default SMS. It works like a charms and real smooth
I typically install Textra right when I get a new phone but haven't felt the need yet except that I wish it had a dark mode which Textra has.
Another reason I have not installed 3rd party apps is that I wanted the phone to earn my trust on its own merit which it's done so far.

I updated the first post with the instructions on how I fixed it. I believe the combination of manually setting the APN as well as checking the box to "Activate Mobile Data" within Textra is what got it to work finally
I tried this, same everything. Does not work for me.
EDIT: Went back to using Hangouts. I disabled "Queue background data" in power management and I was able to download/receive my mms. Need to further test.
Had an opportunity with Wife's phone not receiving MMS, what I found was mine had "roaming MMS" checked hers did not, once I checked it hers worked.
Open messaging app, click the three dots in the upper right hand corner, settings, find "MMS roaming" and check it.
Thanks for this, I was having problems receiving mms. I tried your steps and my problems are gone. I was going to return the phone, so glad I don't have to now.

I am not sure if that will work. I couldn't get any other app to work with my MMS settings other than textra. Other apps like Handcent allowed me to manually configure my APN, but none of them had the "Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED" setting, which I believe was key to getting it to work.

MMS and APN Settings

Since receiving my Redmi Note 3, I've been very happy with the phone and software, however I have not been able to receive multimedia messages, is this due to alternate APN settings?, I'm on Australia Woolworths network 4G telstra.
However these settings are default normal telstra, would this be the reason or is it something else? Cheers
Today I was trying to download a MMS but wasn't able to. I modify APN but still nothing.
Then I had the brilliant idea to change the setting to "Prefer 3G" and it worked. Downloaded the MMS without a problem.

Maybe a bug. But you don't have to keep the 3G. You just have to change to 3G to download the MMS and change back to 4G after that.
I'm with Aldi Mobile, and I can't send MMS, despite configuring the settings they provide on their website. Are you guys able to send MMS at all? I've tried both 4G and 3G, but no luck. I'm running the latest stable global ROM.
Oh, and I'm afraid I don't know if I can receive MMS sorry....
Edit: OK, I can send and receive via the Xiaomi built-in Messaging app (with 4G). Google Messenger will not send MMS, but don't know about receiving.

Edit: OK, I can send and receive via the Xiaomi built-in Messaging app (with 4G). Google Messenger will not send MMS, but don't know about receiving.

Sorry peteski, I haven't had any luck with this. Even though I don't like it much, the built-in app does the job so that's what I've been using. If I ever get it working I'll make another post.

Cheers

Hi Megafluffles, I've got the same phone, same carrier, but even with the Mi Message option on I can't send MMS. Did you ever find out how to get the stock messaging app up and running?
Ta, Nic
Sorry for the necroposting, I hope this info helps someone. For some reason it's very hard to come by.
On my Redmi Pro it looks like this: Settings -> SIM and mobile networks, but not APN settings! Instead, somewhere at the very bottom there is an option to "Always receive MMS (even if mobile internet is turned off)". Switch it on, and voila! The MMS service is working. When you turn it off, even if the APN settings are correct and your 3G-4G network is working perfectly, your MMS "can't be sent at the moment". Good luck trying it out!
I'm using the latest stable MIUI global and the default messaging app, nothing fancy.
