[Q] New to Android and bought an S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Sat here eagerly awaiting my new phone.
I have been googling around for things i may need, like setup google account etc. Does anyone know a descent little getting starting guide or video as there are loads and not sure which ones are even any good.
Also if any of you are setting up your Galaxy S3 and thought "be easier if i'd done that first", id love to know.
Otherwise just wish the parcel company would get a move on
Happy Dayz

me too waiting for my S3, jumping the bandwagon from iphone!

Not official video, but you can check this
It's actually very straight forward. Just follow prompts and select the appropriate options. I am assuming everyone has a gmail account.

This might be a helpfull article to choose which apps you need/want.

Will my contacts, calendar etc get pulled through from my live accounts. only setup the gmail account this morning.
Thanks for the comments
I had a Ipod touch, blackberry, Windows Phone before this. ICS made me think its time to try android and the desire to be able to do stuff like watch videos without conversion, have a HD screen etc.
still waiting ... come on delivery dude

I am not sure whether it will pull your contacts / calendar from your live account (I haven't tried that myself).
You may want to check this: http://blog.connectedhq.com/2011/05...book-with-windows-live-hotmail-one-time-sync/
This has some useful info on how to import-export from Live to Google and vice versa.

Since Android is a Google product it integrates quite beautifully with Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts, so I definitely recommend that you use those services now that you're going to be using Android.
So to be clear, what I recommend is exporting contacts, mail and calendar to Google's respective services.
I don't have any experience with trying to sync Outlook/Live/Exchange with Android, but a quick Google search leads me to believe that it might not be all that simple... Here are some interesting links I found:
http://syncdroid.net/gsyncit
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=outlook+sync&c=apps
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...indows-live-contacts-calendar.html#post834492
Like I said though, I don't have any experience with this, but if you do end up running into trouble when you get your phone and are setting it up, XDA is the best place to look for support and someone will most likely be able to help you...

Go to http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/ and check the bar on the right

Right contacts and calendar was simple, install the hotmail app, turn off the push notifications as you email already goes to mail, tick contacts and calendar and SYNC woo hoooo
Thanks all
off to read some more stuff

Hotmail, Live contacts on Android
The hotmail app pulls in details but doesnt let you edit them in contacts or calendar.
Talking to the local Apple fanboy gave me the clue for how to achieve this, and its simple. Press manual setup and use exchange active sync.
settings as follows:
Email: [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected]
Server Address: m.hotmail.com
SSL: Enabled
Username: [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected]
Password: password
Domain: <blank>

Auto setup uses pop which is why you dont get the contacts and calendar.

Using the Hero with a Google apps account??

Hi everyone,
New to the forum... My Hero's on it's way so I've been reading about rooting, etc, on this great forum I found . Never had an HTC before so not sure I really know what rooting is, but I'll soon give it a go and bust the phone or end up being able to do bluetooth file transfer!
Now to my question! I have my email all through my own domain, but run by/hosted by Google using google apps.
So I use a Googlemail webmail interface to collect my emails, but access it through mail.mydomain.com and get emails to [email protected] . My calendar works similarly.
Will this work with all the built in functionality of the Hero that ties in to Gmail accounts? Do I need to do a hack to do this, or will it work out of the box?
Thanks,
James
I use apps for domains too. Works perfectly except for buying software from the Market - had to open another account for that annoyingly.
Well, I've just recieved my Hero, and under my Google account, I entered my Google apps details, eg,
[email protected] and my relevant password. No luck It didn't recognise it. Off to do a bit of googling on the subject now, but any help on how to get it to sync with a Google Apps for Domains account greatly appreciated...
I can definitely guarantee you that it works. I use my domain with Google Apps for Domains, and the only thing that didn't work was paid apps on the market - even then, it knew that this was because I had an apps account and it asked me for a "normal" gmail account and would allow me to buy apps.
I suggest a full reset may be in order.
Regards,
Dave
Cheers
I just tried a hard reset and this time it worked when I entered the details as I booted up
Not sure if it's relevant but this is the "brown" HTV Hero from www.mobiles.co.uk
Loving the phone so far, really pleased it works with domains as that would have been a deal breaker!
Did I understand right, that the Hero asked for a normal gMail-Account in addition to the gApps-Account, if you want to buy software from the marketplace?
Or do I have to completely change to a normal gMail-Account if I want to buy something?
I'd like to keep my gApps-Account and have no problem to open an additinal gMail-Acc just for Marketplace.

Yes, this is correct. You still sign into the market using your gApps-Account, but you can't link a credit card to that account in the Market. In this case, all it does is asks you to authenticate yourself with a regular gMail account when checking out - all your apps are still linked in the Market to your regular gApps account.

Dave

Sync With Google

Google Sync is a free service that allows you to sync your contacts, email and calendar with your gmail account.
It is a two-way sync, meaning that if you add an appointment or contact to your phone, it will upload to Google's cloud and update your gmail information as well.
I use Google Sync to keep my contacts in the cloud, vs using myPhone since I have multiple phones but only one Windows Live account. If you have ever synced two phones to myPhone under one account, you'll see right away why this is a bad thing.
One of my favorite benefits from using Google Sync is the fact that it not only stores my phone contacts, it also stores their facebook links and contact pictures as well. This means that I can freely flash another ROM without worrying about backing up all of my contacts to SIM or myPhone and then manually updating all of the information for them.
The best part of Google Sync has to be the push email service. As emails arrive (assuming you have set the account up correctly), they will be pushed to your phone via ActiveSync. You don't have to be at your computer for this, it's done over the air.
The only think Google Sync can't do is sync Tasks. If you choose Tasks during the setup, you will receive a cryptic error.
Now that I've told you about the benefits of Google Sync, let's go over how to use it. This assumes you have an existing gmail account. I don't know how to sync with Google without a gmail account, sorry.
I always add my hotmail account first. For some strange reason you can never go back and edit the settings for the first mail account you setup on Windows Mobile, so I use my hotmail account for this.
Steps:
Select your Mail tab and hit the Menu button
Choose "Add Account"
Under "Choose a Mail Provider", select "Outlook" (Don't select Gmail!)
Put your entire gmail address ([email protected]) in the "Email address" box, followed by your password.
Select "Next"
Under "User name" put your email address ([email protected]) again.
The Password field should be filled in, if not just put it in again.
Scroll down.
Leave "Domain" blank.
Scroll down.
Leave "Save password" checked.
Under "Server address" put m.google.com
Leave "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection" checked.
Select "Next"
If all options are selected, deselect Tasks (Very Important!)
If not, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar
Hit Advanced Settings
Peak time and Non-peak time (I have "As items arrive" on both here) sets how often your emails are pushed to your phone.
I have nationwide coverage, so I also select "Sync data when roaming".
Hit "Done"
Hit "Done" again.
The phone will now connect to the Google Sync server and begin updating your contacts, calendar appointments and email. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of contacts and such. If you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, they should now appear on your phone in short order. You may choose "Send/Receive" from the mail Menu if you think it is taking too long.
You will now be able to receive your email sent to your gmail account as soon as it arrives. I have also forwarded my email from my other accounts to my gmail account, but this may be too much for you.
I would not recommend this to anyone who does not have the "Smart Phone" plan (so-called "Unlimited Data Plan"), as it will eat up your bandwith quickly. It may also have a detrimental effect on your battery, due to the fact that it requires a constant data and Active Sync connection to work properly.
If you are concerned about your battery, you can try changing the Peak and Non-peak options under "Advanced" to longer intervals. If it makes a big difference in the life of your battery, I would love to hear about it here!
You can view the original Google Sync video and tutorial links here:
http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/
Hopefully this will be of use to someone out there! Please let me know if you use Google Sync or if you have trouble following my directions.
---Issue With Labels/Folders---
If you have set gmail to tag messages with labels as they come in, you may not be able to read the messages on your phone. XDA-DEV user pantyshot has managed a workaround and posted it here. Be sure to thank pantyshot for the fix if you find it handy!
Also, newer versions of Outlook Mobile (any available as a cab install so that people don't have to use a custom rom?) support sorting messages by subject. Pretty darn close to the threaded messages in the orgasmic Android Gmail app.
I've been doing this since I got the phone, but it is nice to see someone write up the details.
Nice thx man. I didnt even know this was possible on WM coming from a Nexus. I synced my phonebook with MS outlook but nice to know this is possible.
This should be a sticky!!!
Thanks... nice sticky note.
On Friday, I bought an HD2 to replace my Nexus One (which I gave to my daughter). The N1 & Android are just fine but I wanted to play with the HD2 and WinMo. Not too worried about the lack of support for WinMo 7 as I am certain that we will find versions we can use thanks to XDA.
Ok, back on-topic... I was using Google Sync to get my messages from Gmail to my Nexus One. I now know how to do this with WinMo 6.5. I will address this when I get back home as I am on a business trip in Amman, Jordan and I don't want to rake-up astronomical data roaming charges while over here.
this is helpful for newbies/ beginners..
Anyway I had done set up the gmail as "PRIMARY" account only when i got HD2. why i need hotmail set up as primary account then add gmail? I just curious..
I've been using this method as well, but has anyone noticed that you cannot sync your labels from gmail? Is it just me or Outlook just syncs the inbox aside from contacts and calendar?
The only glitch I have seen with using google sync is that when you import your contacts from google, they get sorted as Last Name, First Name. (Doe, John.)I have always liked seeing my contact list as first name last name. (John Doe.) If you manually try to switch this in your contact list, it gets over written once google syncs again. Does anyone know how to possibly fix this?
This method is GREAT. Big thanks to OP

I'm not sure why, but whenever you add a new email account to Windows Mobile and attempt to go back and edit it, the first account you added will always be grayed out. This means you can't modify, or even delete the first account.
Since you may decide you want to change how often you check your gmail, I thought you might want to add a hotmail account (Windows Live) first, since those settings are automatic and can't be changed anyway.
I've always had to do a hardreset in the past to get rid of bad gmail settings, so I learned to always put hotmail first.
Hope that helps

I know, this is annoying. I have added two new contacts and both of them were sorted like this.
You can try deleting the "Last Name" field in your phone contacts, then add the last name beside the first name, but I haven't actually tried that.
If it works, please get back to us

When I used the official Gmail App, it represented labels as folders. Because Google doesn't actually have different folders (just different flags for each message), I don't know of any way to split the messages by folder.
As a matter of fact, I don't think you can do this with regular folders via Outlook, due to the way the built-in email client works.
If anyone knows a fix to this please post; we would all like to separate our messages by folders if possible!

You can try this app I have called Contact Changer. Just install to phone, hit the change button and soft reset. After that they should display correctly, and it's actually WinMo that displays contacts like that b/c I have mine sync'd through Microsoft Myphone (b/c gmail messes up the contact pics) and they display the same way.
Now once you run the app, if you add a contact or delete a contact it will revert to last name first. Just run the Contact Changer and reboot again and you will be golden.

Funny you mention that.
I actually used the built-in option to link my favorite contacts to their respective facebook account in my friends list. This changed the contact picture from the camera image I had to their facebook avatar. When next I flashed my phone, Google loaded the contacts back with the facebook linke and facebook avatar, which was very surprising to me.
Does myPhone do the same thing if you use them to keep track of your contacts?

Not sure what you posted this link in reference to. Unless you are confusing Google Sync with ActiveSync...
ActiveSync is the method of connecting your phone directly to your PC, for file transfers, updating your ROM image and standard backups. It is also the name of the protocol that the Microsoft Exchange Servers use to sync data between the Server and ActiveSync-enabled devices.
Google Sync is a free Microsoft Exchange Server that allows "push" email via your phone's data connection. You don't have to be near a PC to sync your calendar, contacts or gmail.
I think the threaded e-mail conversations are only available in the WM 6.5.x versions of WinMo. I am also unable to sync my other folders (Sent, Saved) from Gmail. I have them checked off as well in the Manage Folders option, but nothing appears in these folders after syncing. I think the only possible folder to sync is Inbox.

Are you sure they are actually folders? I thought gmail only has labels that appear as folders in the native clients.
Also, this is the same as most Outlook syncs; it will only give you the unread messages. There may be a setting in gmail that will allow you to retrieve old messages, but I'm not sure why you would want to do that on a mobile phone.
If you want to just get your emails, you can use the "Gmail" option when setting up your new email account on the HD2. This won't "push" like the "Outlook" option will, but you can still set it to manually check as often as every 5 minutes if you can spare the battery life.
Of course, you would be much better off getting the official gmail client for that, since that will also support your lables-as-folders option.
Myself, I prefer to use Google Sync and let that push emails to my phone as well as syncing all of my gmail and phone contacts. I don't use labels any more and don't want all the "Sent" or "Archived" messages to clutter up my phone.
Yea, you're probably right about the labeling/folder issue. I just want to see a saved e-mail to look some thing up at times, but maybe I'll just log onto gmail.com for that on my phone. Is there any Gmail client available for WinMo phones? I haven't seen any. Also, does push kill battery life? (ex. sync every 5 minutes) Or is it a more sophisticated syncing method that will only connect to data when new messages arrive?

E-Mail

OK...
So I've got 2.1, got it rooted and until I have the time to get rid of that horrible blue I thought I'd give Timescape another go... First up, big fail on the call log, but maybe they'll sort that with the next update later this year...
Then I had a look at using the standard e-mail so I would have my mail in Timescape. I'd been using the gmail app and moxier (for my exchange account at work). After playing around I've got two questions:
1. I had read that the android e-mail app supports exchange in 2.1 but it won't accept the details from my work server. Has anyone got an exchange account to work with the standard mail app? Or has SE decided we don't need this because we've got Moxier?
2. This may be pretty simple, but I just want to move an e-mail from my inbox to a folder.... is this not possible, or am I an idiot? (these aren't necessarily mutually exclusive )
EDIT: I read up again on this today - the active sync support is in 2.1, but it is up to the manufacturer to implement it due to licensing costs (google doesn't want to be giving microsoft money now, does it ) Which means we're stuck with moxier. All I really wanted was one calendar with everything in it (exchange and google) but the only way I can see of doing that is with a desktop sync, and we don't have desktop access to our exchange server as it is hosted (terminal server or active sync only...)

Hi,
I'm also afraid of using Moxier for Exchange sync and it's normally a "no go" for me.
But I don't have the update in Germany right now so I'll wait....and sell it after updating
I don't know why they (have to) use Moxier, but the integration has not taken place.
No merge of Moxier and X10 calendar! No Moxier widget that can be used instead.
But I think that there are not much people out there who miss the "integrated" Excange sync.
I've played with two other devices and I intend to change.
You can try K9 or ShangMail. Pretty cool apps for push email.

[Q] Calender & Mail Help!!!

Hey Guys
Just joined the android bunch when the wife got me a new Xperia X10 for my b'day/anniversary. Its awesome and i'am loving every bit of it especially the personalization part of it.
However coming from the iPhone I have a few queries and would be great if someone could help me with it. Have searched the forums and haven't really got any useful info of it (mind you i could have terrible searching skill, btw did anyone see my keys??)
I have two mail id's like most people. One is my personal gmail id and the other is my corporate mail id. I have configured them both onto my phone and I'am indeed recieving all mails without a glitch. Unfortunately I don't have an option of sorts to configure my office calendar to sync with the native app. The calendar option does not exist for the second mail option(The option to sync my personal gmail calendar exists and is working fine).
However while using the iphone3g previously I was able to simultaneously use both the calendars (gmail & corporate) and an update on either of the two calendars from my desktop would show on the calendar.
Question1
Is it possible to have a similar system on the android as well. The backend for my corporate mail is provided by gmail and so is the calendar and everything in it. Someone suggested elsewhere that i could share the calendar to my personal mail and i could use it that way. Unfortunately it not enabled for me and the only option for sharing lets my personal account to see if I'm free or engaged at any time. This would be of very limited use to me.
Question 2
Whenever i receive a mail with a calendar invite on the corporate id, the mail appears empty with a small attachment. Using the preview option on the mail app displays text based data that pretty much random stuff overlaid on the meeting name etc(i guess this is the program info or something). Is there anyway if and when i receive an invite i would be able to add them to my calendar or refuse it right-away etc..
These two queries are the biggest of my worries as of now on the otherwise enjoyable experience. I'm terrible sorry for the long post but thought I'd give as much info as possible.
Thanks for your time and help!!
Cheers!!
PS: Some background info, Phone: Xperia X10i, Firmware 2.1-Update1(India), unrooted, baseband 2.1.54. If there is any other app that would help me do the same(Paid or Free), it would be awesome.
Hi there,
I use my phone in a similar way, I have 4 accounts in my gmail app. 3 corporate and 1 personal. If I can remember back to 2.1 (eclair) you can only have 1 gmail account in that app. Then you have to use the mail app for up to 5 more (not sure about moxier mail, I never used it).
Basically what your best doing is rooting the phone to get it up to 2.2 (froyo) that way use have much more control over what sync's from each account. I would recommend tripnraver's froyo. He has a new 1.2.0 coming tonight. You do have to put up with some minor bugs, but the benefits far out weigh the negatives.
A lot also depends on what type of email accounts they are. Either way froyo is way better for your needs.
If you don't wish to dabble with your new present, wait a few months when sony bring out 2.3.4 gingerbread!
I have had a few close shaves, while flashing my phone but approx 10 roms later, I'm pretty sure it's hard to brick it. Worst case restore it back using the sony software.
Hope that helps.

Just about to pick up the S3, one question: can I import and sync hotmail contacts?

I'm coming from a Windows Phone, and the great thing about it was it synced all my contacts to my main hotmail. Phone numbers, everything. I'm not interested in moving to GMail, Hotmail has always done it for me and that's that.
So as I'm completely 100% new to Android. My question:
Can I sync my hotmail contacts to the S3? As in, will they show up with their numbers and all? And is there a way to keep it syncing? Will changes made to either the phone or Hotmail reflect?
Many thanks guys, and looking forward to getting this beast of a device!

Yeah when I add a Hotmail account using the built in email client it asks if I want to sync contacts, I usually don't since I use Gmail. I just tried it and it showed one person with a phone number which could be right, but honestly don't know if the number is from Hotmail or something else.
However, you'll have to have a Gmail account to use Play Store etc, and it works really well for new devices/resetting etc, just put in your Gmail and you can restore everything on first boot.
If I was you I'd strongly consider swapping to Gmail, just my thoughts.

Thanks for the help, man.
Well I've had the same Hotmail for like a decade, and just had to switch it actually to Microsoft's new dumbass "@outlook.com" thing. There are so many people who have it, and I like their SkyDrive. All personal taste and all that.
At any rate, I do have a gmail address, and will be using it for Play. But not as my email. Which I do understand is a pain, and a purposeful handicap on my part.
From what you described, it does seem like it imported a number into your phone's contacts. Seems hopeful.

Yeah I just opened the contact and removed the Google account part from it and it still showed a number and I checked my Hotmail on computer and it listed the number, so it seems like it should work, but I'm still not 100% sure. Hopefully someone here might use it like that and will have a better idea.

Yes you can, it was a pain to do at first as you have to configure your hotmail sing m.hotmail.com or something as far as I remember, you'll find on google what to do anyway... I, like you, came from windows phone and I do miss that amazing system but the s3 is sick
dont know if you also know that you can if you want also use activesync to connect hotmail to the built in email app, thats how i use it and it works a treat for me
for your users name its "\[email protected]" and for server use m.hotmail.com
It already has been mentioned that you have an Hotmail app and you can also configure an Exchange account. For what you want, you should go for Exchange account, because the app imports your contacts but it doesn't allow to edit them (I don't remember if you can add a new one, but I think you can't); with Exchange you can edit and add contacts, but you only get the first calendar (Hotmail app can sync all calendars). Since you haven't mentioned calendar I guess it's not important.
