DLNA on ICS vs GB - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So is it just me or with the new ICS (4.0.3 LP7) , a lot of formats (infact almost all) that could be played on GB have stopped working.
I keep getting "Unsupported File Format" for almost every video I could play on GB.
This is when using samsung allshare app which uses the default video player.
if I use skifta which lets me choose player, only rockplayer is able to play the videos, and that too not at all smoothly. All other players (mx, etc) just play a bucket load of distortion.
Weird thing is that on GB (2.3.6) , allshare itself played every god-damned format I threw at it.

Yep my observations also. I've updated ICS to XWLPF now so maybe theres been a fix, but I haven't tried as yet. However, I used Allshare on my brothers Samsung TV and it played native recorded videos just fine.
The device you're streaming to has to be able to display or support different formats also.
MX Player is awesome as always. No issues.

Yea which is why I'm wondering if ICS (or at least LP7) has this regression.
Fetching LPF now to see if it has fixed this

nope, factory reset and flashed LPF.
Videos via AllShare still throws "Unspoorted File Format" to all the videos I used to play via serviio before on GB

video player for rooted and romed tab

im having problems locating any video player that will play a movie i have on my tablet, its mp4, the thing is im running starburst uekmb rom and i know i was able to pkay this movie with the stock rom... I dont want to go back to stock just to play a simple video... But any and all video players in the market just refuse to play it just like the galery and built in video player, others are out of sync with the sound, and the ones that arent out of sync play te video in spurts, so the screen looks like its glitching out.
So is there a way to fix this, a video player that will work with my device or some sort of codec thing like in windows to make the built in player play almost anything?
Get diceplayer from the market.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using XDA Premium App
i prefer moboplayer, but it still can't play all the videos, i use a video tool introduced by Foxreal to deal with videos that can't be supported, the result is just what i expect

Fix for video on cm7

What player are you using? I used Rock Player to test some AVI videos yesterday and it seemed to work perfect.

How big were your files, and what format if you don't mind me asking? I tried playing a few mkv files, at first they didn't work, I then rebooted and one of them would play, albiet, choppily (MX Video Player). The files were 700MB-1.5GB.
I did download a 720p mp4 video of Lion King's "hakuna matata" from youtube, that played fine.
1080 videos of various sizes and i am just using the native player built in cyanogen
Try Mobo Player, if it doesnt work as it is, download its ARMv7 codecs from the market

[Q] Best way to play .avi / video files?

So, I'm trying out various Android market apps on my rooted NT, trying to find a way to play .avi files. These videos easily on my Android phone: drag, drop, and play. But since the NT doesn't naively support .avi (and other common video extension) files, what can I do? Do I have to install codecs or something? Thanks.
Download MX player is the best out there, in the nook tablet works perfectly you can install the codecs for Arm7 only if it tells you to. It support many video formats including AVI by default.

Yeah, I tried that app, along with some of its codecs. No luck. If I take the time to convert files in Handbrake to .mp4, it'll work, but my old laptop takes forever.
Whenever (an it's not often) i get a file that doesn't work in MX Player.. then Mobo player usually does the job... with no extra codecs to install

Yeah, I also tried Mobo, didn't work.
I wonder what's wrong? It can't be the video files, as they play just fine on my Samsung GSII.
Yeah i think you are defiantly doing something wrong..
In MX player and Mobo Player make sure you're using the SW decode for playing the movies..
Apart from that maybe you need to provide a little more info so we can help you troubleshoot. The NT definitely plays AVI and it does it quite well so maybe there's just something a little screwed up in your system..
thnaks
it worked for me

[Q] cannot play videos via allshare or Skifta (Unsupported file format)

Region: AUSTRALIA
Provider: OPTUS
AVer: 2.3.6
BVer: I9100XXK14
Issue: When using allshare or skifta the native player says it cannot play my mkv's avi's that ive tried to play, they use h264 or xvid codecs so i dont see why the stock player cannot play them as i read in other posts that videos of these form can be played on the stock player. I connect to these videos via PS3-Media-Server for windows and sometimes wonder why it can't just stream it to my mobile like how it does for the ps3.
Also with skifta is there a app player that can play mkv's with soft subs? Ive tried mvideo and rock but they either stutter have HUGE colour artefacts or wont load the subtitles.

Are you trying to stream to your phone using the ps3 media server remote device using Allshare? That doesn't work for me, but if you enable media sharing in windows media player and access your files through the windows remote device in allshare that should work fine, (Open media player, switch to library, and enable the options under 'stream').
Alternatively download and install UPnPlay and MX Video Player from the Play store. If all your devices are on the same home network (local) and you have enabled media sharing / shared folders you can simple browse for the file using UPnPlay and play using MX Video Player, which also plays subs! This combination will play most things you throw at it, make sure you render to your device when playing, if you try rendering to a dlna enabled tv or something else etc you may get a 'file format unsupported' error.
Hope this helps. If you need any more help just drop a comment
I tried skifta with mxplayer and after a veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy long wait it worked (had to enable subtitles myself but its no big deal). Is it normal to have that wait? is it different with unpnplay?
Thanks for recomendding MX player its sooo much better ill thank you once everything works out!

Give Unpplay a shot, it's free so you've got nothing to loose, and no it's not slow at all. I use Unpplay to access media from my NAS drive. I didn't find Unpplay terribly intuitive to begin with (probably just me) but stick with until you're successfully streaming

It works with both i tried =D!
But wezi i think i should recommend you skifta ! I think its much more to offer . But thanks for the MX recommendation i thank you very much.
Good to hear it worked, and i'll check Skifta out also

[Q] Fix stock video player???

Recently updated to ics rom, however, the stock video player no longer plays avi files as it did with gb rom. I have flashed several gb roms since (full wipe each time) and still won't play. I've tried several stock video apks from this forum too yet still no joy. I have read that Samsung have stopped supporting sum codecs on ics update (Galaxy nexus owners are having similar issues). I'm back on gb rom but avi is still not playing as I'm getting the 'unsupported file' message bearing in mind the same file played fine prior to ics update. How do I get back or reinstall the original codecs? Flashing gb roms doesn't fix it either!
Probably not the answer you want, but you could do worse than opening your wallet and buying MX Video Player or Dice Player.
I bought both, and have yet to find a file/codec that neither can play.
The stock player (I'm on GB too) borked too often for no reason on too many file types for me. Never tried it on ICS.
iv got mx player, it works when using sw decoder. use to work on hw encoder for both mx and stock player.
I have a couple of videos which play fine in MX with HW encoding, but with no audio. The same videos play fine with perfect audio in Dice with HW encoding.
Codecs are fussy buggers. I do all my own encoding with MeGUI/avisynth - no shortcuts - and still haven't found one profile for all, so I chop and change.
Only bought Dice a couple of weeks ago, but it's overtaken MX as my default player. There's a free version with intensely annoying nag banners if you want to try it.
Thanks for suggestion, but ultimately, I'd like the stock player to be working as it did with gb with hw decode. This ics update has been a disaster on sammys part, ruined the excellent vid player, ruined the phone apk wrt contact options been omitted. Maybe success is getting to them!
What version of ICS fw were you running or what ROM? I have had no problems whatsoever playing videos on ICS using stock. I use my phone a lot for watching videos and need it to function properly as I take the train to and from work a few hours a day. Were you running an AOKP or CM9 based rom?
If you still can't play when reverting back to GB, I'd suggest a full wipe, wpe cache/partition. Then flash a GB stock rom through ODIN. See if that works?
Tried that, still no joy. Was on gb kk5 rom. But now keep getting unsupported file!?
