That ruined my day

Anyone know if I would I be able to get the Bionic for free (w/2 year contract renewal) if I don't currently have an upgrade available? I got the X2 off my dad, they resigned my 2 year contract last year and locked me into the piece of crap till next year. Ugh.

That ruined my next two years.
Or however long before Big Red forces all of us into tiered plans.
For existing customers, Amazon has the Galaxy Nexus for $150. (50 bucks cheaper than Verizon)
For NEW customers, the Nexus goes for $50.

$150? That aint bad at all
EDIT: Maybe I'm missing something. I'm not seeing it for that price.
EDIT 2: Nevermind. I see it. Nice.

Well it looks like if I did that, I would need to make changes to my contract. Early termination fee, blah blah blah, etc. If I did it without contract changes it would be $649. So

I just read that since the Galaxy Nexus does not have removable storage the phone does not have USB mass storage. It instead uses MTP.
From what I've read, it seems like data transfer is slower with MTP and you cannot connect it to devices that read stored mp3's through things like Ford Sync (in cars). Also, the phone cannot just sync to photo software? I'm guessing to update and sort out which photos are new?
Does anyone have any information on the MTP vs. UMS?
As much as I detested everyone else leaving the X2 and leaving us behind, I really don't want to be stuck with this phone. Even though there are phone comparison topics found throughout various threads, maybe it would be best if there was one thread dedicated to users looking to share info on phones for comparison sake.
I will also say, $150 just looks so much better than $200 (especially since I have $50 gift card).

Are you selecting upgrade existin line? I didn't see anything about early termination fee. It even lists out the option to keep unlimited data.

Maybe I'm taking the early termination fee thing out of context. I think its just warning you about the fee if you cancel after 14 days. But I'm not eligible for an upgrade until April of next year. This would be a contract extension but would amazon or Verizon allow it?

no they wouldnt allow that. they want you to buy if for $650 or have to pay the early termination which is insane.

Eh dont panic about the Nexus not being there. It is reasonably priced at $200 w/2yr and that price can only go down. Granted, that decrease will take some time but the point is the phone is amazing and worth paying that extra money.
FWIW, Nitro and Ace just started developing for the Bionic, so if youre poor like me and your phone is physically dying, a *free* 4G device sounds pretty darn good

Well Im just doing research right now. My power button is starting to crap out so if it does, I need to get a new phone. Unless Verizon will just send me a replacement which I will try first. They better, otherwise what the hell am I paying for insurance on this thing? lol

Hopefully Assurion, Verizon's insurance company, has run out of stock for the X2s and you can get something better.

If you want to keep your unlimited data and extend it for two years, upgrade now.
If you use that upgrade after July 7, you'll lose your unlimited plan and be dropped down to a 2gb of data limit per month for the same price your paying now for unlimited.

Btw if your holding out for the incred 4g, the rezound is better

200 is an excellent deal if its in the condition they say it is and has the beats headphones. It's still a good deal without the headphones.
make sure you verify the esn before purchase.
Its easy to get early upgrades from Verizon if you call them. It has become pretty difficult in store as of late as they all seem to have the same script. Just tell them your current phone is driving you bat **** and you cant take it anymore. Also mention you've tried to wait it out. They will ask you what phone you want, and then they will send you the phone overnight for whatever 2yr price is currently listed on the VZ website. Your upgrade will vanish and your upgrade cycle will restart.
You could always buy the Rezound off contract now and get whatever phone is at the top of the pile in august.
I picked up a GNEX on CL for 275.00 even though I have an upgrade available. It replaced my sons DX2. I'm saving the upgrade for the next great VZ phone, which will save me from a 600-800 dollar off contract price on release day(impulse buyer).
I currently have 5 lines and I try to keep one upgrade available at all times just in case.

I've gotten upgrades 1 year + early. Just depends on who you talk to and what you say. Also factors such as tenure, payment history , ARPU (how much $$ you are worth to VZW) etc etc.
oh wow that could mean I could get the rez for 50 bucks now. I really don't see too may phones popping up other than the one v but even then we've hit a point in hardware where only battery tech may improve over the next year. 1.5ghz dual core and plenty of ram will run sense4.0 easy along with any 3.5 rom.
I've only been with vzw for a year and a half now with a family plan of 3 lines but my phone is my main line of work communication calls emails etc.

They're pushing out Quadcore SoC's already this year. It's nice but totally unecessary, at this point hardware is overpowered. At this point in game it's all about software optimizations. But manufacterer's need to make them cash dollars $$$. Just try calling Verizon when they open up tomorrow and see if you can get your upgrade pushed.

Droid DNA

Seeing stuff about the new Droid DNA that was announced today, just kinda curious of who all will be getting it? I won't be able to get it real soon after release unless money and/or the DNA falls out of the sky into my hands, but just curious of who all would jump on that? Well, that was a quick move to a new forum...Anyway I just want to say that I called that Verizon's app store is being replaced by Amazon's "services." The product page says you can use a single sign-on to all of the Amazon apps. I like most of them, but I'd rather be able to install/uninstall on my own.
This would be my next phone if it wasn't on Verizon.
I'm planning on buying it, I just have to figure out what I am going to have to do to keep my unlimited data. If you upgrade a limited data line now and use this phone on an unlimited data line they cut the unlimited data plan off. I am thinking of upgrading the limited data line and selling it on EBay then buying another DNA since they can only take it if the device has the same serial number. I haven't been able to find a friend to swap phones with to keep our data packs yet, they dont have upgrades >.<

No they wont.
In fact... verizon reps will tell you to do this method if you want to keep your unlimited data plan.
No chance. Fixed storage, questionable battery life.
Jumped ship from my Galaxy Note 2 pre-order to nab this one instead. Higher resolution, lots of equal or better specs, and $100 less? Yep. Battery might be an issue but not worried about it as I tend to keep my phone plugged in at my desk at work all day anyways. Bring it on!

Verizon didn't tell me to do that method. I called them asking about billing the phone to my account and they told me you can't bill preorders to your account. They also told me that any line that I switch this phone to since it carries a new two year contract is subject to be audited and if they find in their audit that it has the same IMEI number as the one I purchased on my limited data line, they will change my plan for the unlimited data phone to a limited data plan. Verizon is trying to destroy us unlimited data users any way they possibly can.

Solution = Upgrade your current phone unsubsidized at full retail, sell your old phone on ebay to offset some of the cost, and retain your unlimited data until it's new contract time down the road.

[Q] My phone upgrades are available, what are my options?

I'm on Verizon obviously and I was lucky enough (at the time) to have been grandfathered into that 1400 minute plan with unlimited data. We have two phones, HTC Rezound(mine) and a Motorola DX2(wife), both do for upgrades in August. I'm probably going to wait until some new phones come out, nothing I see entices me right now.
Down to the point, how can we upgrade without losing our unlimited data? What are our options, any way to get around this? My wife is dying for a new phone, here DX2 is 2 years old and falling apart plus I'd love to get away from HTC. I appreciate any help with this.
Really the only way is to buy a phone off-contract.
Yeah as far as buying new, either catch a sale right around launch and buy it retail or wait until the phones been out a few months or so until they're cheaper than the retail price at online auctions or classified listing.
Or you can add a new line and get a new phone. Then swap Sims and activate an old dumb phone on the new line which allows you to not have to pay the $30 smartphone package. Ends up costing about 12-15 after the 9.99 monthly charge with taxes and usage fees added on.

I guess you have to buy one off contract. Swappa is great for buying gently used phones. Or you could buy a Nexus 4 or Nexus 5 when it comes out.

If I remember that thread he got it by transferring the upgrade from one line to his or something. I think that's what happened.
Right now I'm on the old Nationwide Family Talk & Text plan. We have 2 phones; 1400 min, unlimited data and text. My girlfriend and I don't even come close to 1400. I took a screenshot of my data usage and my gf's from the vzw app. I believe it shows that I used over 5gb for this billing period so far? Am I able to see last months total data usage online? My 3yr old uses my phone a lot so I'm worried about tier data plans. Oh and we pay about $175 a month for this plan for two phones which is insane
I think these are all of my options? Which do you feel is the best for me in the long run?
A. Pay full retail for two new phones and use the monthly payment plan so I can keep my unlimited data?
B. Switch to a data tier plan and drop unlimited so I can get the 2yr phone discount prices?
C. Wait until Dec when my contract is done and then switch to another carrier?
D. Try and find a use phone on Craigslist?
Right now I have a Rezound (used from Asurion) and my GF has a cracked DX2. Where looking at maybe the S4 or a 5s when it comes out. We always wanted to try iPhones.

[Q] Can someone explain to me why in the world anyone would use VZW edge?

I just looked into it to upgrade my finace to a S4 and they said not only do you have to pay the full device price(spread out over 24 months) but then you have to trade in your "old" device and get nothing in return? WTF. If I'm going to give you a device you are going to give me some money for it. Not to mention, other carriers knock off money on your bill for paying for your own phone, but not VZW. Geez. This company makes me wonder more and more why I am with them.
Sorry to vent, I just can't believe what they charge for. And I have been a customer since 2005.

You are only forced to trade the old device in if you haven't paid the full price for it. With Edge, you're eligible for an upgrade every 6 months (providing that 50% of the device's retail price has been paid). If you keep the phone for 24 months (or pay it off early), you're able to keep the phone when you get a new device.
I think what they're looking at is more of a phone rental system. You pay monthly for the phone until it's half paid, and then trade it in for a new phone. It pretty much looks like a car lease.

Pretty much sums it up accurately. For the most part the consumers have been the ones driving this trend fighting tooth and nail over the early termination fees and 2 year contracts.

Well then the CS rep I talked to yesterday doesn't know crap. Not surprising, but still. The we have about 8 months left on her contract for her driod 4, and she said for me to take advantage of the "edge" program I would have to trade that device in and pay my monthly installments for the S4. I would consider upgrading her early but the battery has taken a crap and I don't trust vzws return warehouse to not screw up again. So I was just going to use edge for her. But I'm not giving them a free device that I agreed to a two year contract over. I would rather just pay cash for the device than do that. So I guess they don't train their people for crap anymore.

Huh? I'm fine with a contract. I'm also fine paying full price. But if I am going to pay full price for the device I should get an extra discount like what tmo gives. If that is where you are going with the comment. I'm not sure 100% what you're getting at.

Huh? I'm fine with a contract. I'm also fine paying full price. But if I am going to pay full price for the device I should get an extra discount like what tmo gives. If that is where you are going with the comment. I'm not sure 100% what you're getting at.

Sorry: To clarify, when you sign up for service you sign a two year contract, but at the end of those two years, unless you pay full price for a phone, you will be signing another two year agreement. At this point the carriers are acknowledging that users want phones more often than two years but two not want to pay full price. So in a sense you can know rent you phone and get a new one once you have paid ~50% of the full cost, however long that takes you (so long as it is more than 6 months).

Oh, I see more of what you are getting at now. Sorry, I'm sometimes a little slow.

A little caviar the rep might not have told you: you have to be OUT of contract to begin with to start edge

Unlimited Data Plans go up $20/month

As reported on CNET....Verizon will raise the cost of the Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan from $30 to $50 per month starting in mid-November.
However....Verizon also said they will no longer throttle users who retain their unlimited data plans....AND will no longer require payment in full when you get a new phone...you can now go on a monthly payment plan if you desire.
http://www.cnet.com/news/verizon-promises-an-open-road-for-unlimited-data-customers/?ref=yfp
I don't know about others...but I WILL keep my unlimited data, it's still cheaper than their 12GB tiered plan and I often go over that limit.

Yeah, not too happy about that. I knew the gravy train wouldn't last forever. I've had other 'grandfathered' VZW features suddenly go up in smoke.
If I had Sprint and/or Tmobile coverage where I live, i'd be bailing to Project FI
Just do the Best Buy trick and you can get a discounted phone under contract for another 2 years at the grandfathered $29.99. They don't raise your rate until you're out of contract.

Thanks for the heads up. I was recently told about it and that it works. Guess he's wrong.

Verizon no longer does contracts nor does it subsidize new phones. Both were part of the Best Buy trick.

Actually, I just did the best buy trick last week. It absolutely still works. Verizon no longer subsidizes phones for new customers, but if you are were an existing customer before they did away with subsidized phones, you can still get a subsidized phone.

Yea billku is right. If you go on Best Buy you can still buy subsidized phones with a contract with Verizon. So the tricks still works.
What is this trick?

Well people with unlimited like to buy subsidized phones from Best Buy because it allows them to pay the subsidized cost instead of full retail while still keeping their data. The only downside is that it puts you into a 2 year contract with Verizon. Recently, however, this downside has turned into a massive upside. Starting November 15th your unlimited bill increases $20 per month for off-contract customers. If you lock into a contract before November 15th, your bill won't increase $20/month for another 24 months. The trick is to buy the phone online from best buy, throw away the sim card they give you, insert your current sim card, and you still have unlimited with a 2 year contract. But if you use the best buy sim card you lose unlimited forever.

Nice summary. I'm still debating whether or not to do this. Is there any risk that you might lost unlimited data?
Is this increase confirmed though? They stated that current unlimited users will be notified after Oct 15th, and I have yet to be notified. I went into a Verizon corp store last week and even the employee did not hear about this. Not that you can believe what they say 99% of the time though, but regardless.

There is always a risk. I would say, if this increase is true, I will try the BB trick before all is said and done. If they increase me, I will leave Verizon and go back to ATT. Around here I have better service with indoors with ATT anyways. All in all, they have just made things way too expensive now a days with non-sub phones (which I agree with) but the costs of line connections and everything else is stupid.
So all one would need to do is Buy a phone on Bestbuy's website and throw away the sim and use the old one? and you keep your old data plan? (reason i'm asking is because right now the Galaxy s6 edge is only 50 on contract)
Pretty much. Search the slickdeals threads for other instructions. Thanks for the heads up. If the increase deems true I will pick up two of these at $50.
Could I then reactivate my Note 3 (if I buy the S6 edge) and then sell it? Or does it have to stay activated on the account for a time period?

I am no expert on the subject (yet), lol, but it looks like many activate the new phone then sell it. The acct is tied to the SIM, not the phone.

Bilku I just went to the Best Buy website and it says that you have to choose one of the tiered plans because unlimited is no longer available. What is the updated method for dealing with this or were you able to pick "existing" at the time?
edit: just got this answer in another forum is this what you did?:
"Actually they don't make you choose anything.. They just tell you you'll be shifted to the default 2gb for 30 bucks tiered plan. Just acknowledge it and do the sim switch"
I've had my same verizon plan for years. Hate that they can upcharge for udp. Does this still work? Other than the Note 3, which phone can I hotspot with a removable battery?

They can because they are Verizon. I bit the dust and went with a V10 upgrade last night. Gave the wife my Note 3, upgrading her from a Note 2. I like it, runs smooth, nice screen, everything works well, and with the promo of battery, 200gb card and charger, I couldn't pass it up. I don't like losing UDP, so went with the 18gb plan. With a 22% discount, same as 12 anyways.
I believe hotspot is "free", but haven't tried it yet.
Did anyone else try the BB method with success? jamor414? On a side note, I just got a replacement Note 3 (my old one stopped charging) and it actually had 4.4.2 on it! Pleasantly surprised...
