[Q] Music Control on Lock Screen & Task Manager - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to bring to attention 2 Problems that I am facing with my new Galaxy S3:
1. Using the stock music player on the default lock screen (swipe), there is no music control feature to pause and skip tracks when I am listening to music. Now I know that there are 3rd party apps that can do that, but I am pretty sure that the stock music player must be able to do that too, since on my galaxy s it works. Has anyone the same problem and any ideas on how to solve it? I am thinking maybe it's a bug on my phone, and considering to 'manufacture reset' the phone to see if it changes.
2. I cannot find the stock task manager app anywhere. I know how to start the task manager ( hold home button), but the app is not there and neither any widgets. I wish there was a widget, so I can put it on the home screen to save time. Any solutions? ( again, not using 3rd party apps)
Thanks in advance
PS: I am also curious how to get rid of the branding logo (Optus Australia) that shows up on start-up, it really makes it look bad. Any suggestions?

I'm having exactly the same questions.
Has anyone a idea?

You can find the music controls by pulling down the notification bar on lockscreen. Let's hope they fix this in the next update.

Yeah, pulling down the notification bar works, but it's an extra step which is pretty much useless, because you might just as well swipe and unlock the phone. Really hope that Samsung/Google fixes this problem, it's so basic.
Also, the stock internet browser seems to be not perfec either: Flash-related problems can occur, especially when watching youtube using the browser, sometimes it just keeps loading and doesn't play. I got the adobe flash player installed, still no change. Anyone sharing same problems?

same question, is there any way to add a shortcut to task manager other than long press home key ?

If you want task manager you can go Samsung app store you can download it. While you are there download photo editor too.

You get music controls if you use a Pin lock instead of just swipe... Silly, I know, but at least you increase your phones protection too

lock screen media control????

Hi guys, I was wondering if there's any app or mod that will let me control my music from the lock screen so it'll be easier to control while driving? The music co tell on the htc inspire is the perfect thing im talking about.
Thanks
Pred.
not aware of anything like that, but i know for a fact there is an app out there for it. but you could always move your music streaming to your home tab of your device and keep the device from sleeping and be able to control it that way too.
use doubleTwist and you can have the lock screen controls.
PowerAMP allows for lockscreen controls as well. I also believe there's at least one lockscreen substitute that allows you to use any homescreen widget(s)?
Widgetlocker will let u use any widget on the lockscreen, and if u ask me is an absolute must to have as the default lockscreen is soo bleh!!

Solved - Best music player app - PowerAmp

I jsut sold my ipod touch and am going solely with my Vibrant for media. I have tried different music players, all of which are good but each has a small issue that bugs me. I am on MIUI and love the ROM.
MIUI player - plays great but shows id3 tags differently than what they really are at times
Winamp - plays awesome, all looks great although the MIUI lockscreen doesn't show album artwork. I can set the lockscreen in winamp but then i have 2 lockscreens to get to the phone - redundant.
Doubletwist - doesn't display some of the album artwork
I have tried others but these 3 seem to suite me most. Does anyone know of how to solve these isssues or have a better player app? Coming from the iPod I have high expectations because for music, it just "worked". Now i am having issues with album artwork and id3 tags not showing correctly. Any suggestions for a different player or how to solve this?
PowerAmp far and away is the best music player I have used. I like it better than PlayerPro and Winamp. It is customizable, you can edit the id3 tags, it will play all range of formats even flv. I have been using it for years. Plus there is a trial version to see if you like it and then after 5 days or something like that you have to pay for full flavor.
+1 for PowerAmp

Thanks guys, I just downloaded it and like it yet I have a question. In MIUI I changed the lockscreen controls for poweramp yet when i am on the lockscreen it's the default music player app controls. I know i can set the lockscreen in poweramp, like winamp but i don't want 2 lockscreens to get to my phone. Thoughts?
This is what you do...
1. Go into "Settings" -> "System" -> "Button" -> "Lockscreen Music Controls" -> "PowerAMP"
2. Go into the PowerAMP app
3. Hit the settings soft key
4. Click on "More"
5. Click on "Settings"
6. Scroll down, Click "Lock Screen"
7. Now change the first two Lock Screen settings to:
Enable Lock Screen... ON
Direct Unlock... ON
8. All the other settings are optional, to make the lock screen better suit your taste.
This should fix your issue.
Thank you, that is what I was looking for! It still "flashes" the default music app lockscreen for a second, but then straight to the poweramp one, is that normal? I really just want it to go straight to poweramp, mostly to display the album art and info.
I have actually uninstalled the stock music apk and that took care of it straight away. Suppose you could freeze it with TBpro. Wish they could bring back the 4x2 lock screen.
PowerAmp + Voodoo + Bose in-ear phones = Eargasm

I want to uninstall it then, how do I do that situation. Center its a system app? Anyone know if poweamp only displays certain size album art too? Seems like the really hi res stuff doesn't show up.
Just pull the music.apk from /system/app and put it on your sdcard so if you want to put back someday you'll have it.
You can adjust the album art size in the settings under album art I think. I have mine set at 85 so it shows the art but then also a glow behind it made from the colors of the album art.
+1000 for Power AMP
Well I moved the music apk and rebooted. I still get the flash of the stock music lock screen before it goes to the power amplifier one, is this normal and something I just have to deal with?
Sadly you will for the most part... This is a flaw of using a third party lock screen widget. It will show a glimpse of the stock lock screen then show the PowerAMP one.
Best workaround I've found is this:
1. Go into PowerAMP and play a song
2. Lock the phone
3. Turn it on
4. Lock the phone again
Now, whenever you turn on the phone it will instantly show the PowerAMP one. However if you unlock the phone you'll have to repeat the process... Still, if you have the phone in your pocket and only need to pull it out to change a song real quick this simple workaround works.
Power amp is the best.no doubt about it.Install PowerAmp without any hesitation.
Well I've been tinkering with PowerAmp and love it so I got the full version. The lockscreen issue was solved by uninstalling doubletwist, now the lockscreen goes straight to PowerAmp, even without the little trick above. I suggest uninstalling other players if you're having the same issue. Also, PowerAmp is awesome, so much to customize and displays tags and album art very well.
+1,000,000 PowerAmp! I don't know how I spent the last year on my vibrant without this MUST HAVE app!?! Excellent advice NOOB, this workaround is working great for my Galaxy Skyrocket as well. Shake Flashlight app also works from the PowerAmp lockscreen flawlessly, which is another must have for me at least!
Sokey... I've been tinkering with the lockscreen settings while listening to music and the only time i'm noticing the stock lockscreen flash beforehand is when my previous action before the screen locking is being on the homescreen... and it's more than just a flash... it's a 2-3 second lag! For instance... if my last action was the calculator...then let it auto lock or manually lock it...upon pressing the power button...straight to the poweramp lockscreen. I'll then unlock, close the calc app and i'm left at the homescreen, lock it up, press power, aand there goes the lag stock lock beforehand. Have you experienced that?

I did exactly as you said with the calculator and each time it went straight to the lockscreen - no lag at all! I suggest uninstalling other music players, when I got rid of the MIUI music player and doubletwist I noticed a huge difference. I can lock it anytime and it has no lag. Good luck.
Make sure in the PA lockscreen settings to have Enable Lock Screen and Direct Unlock both ticked and the Slide to Unlock unticked.
Side note on the more recent builds. PowerAmp 1.4 was the bomb as-is. But then they released 2.0 and it was good for the first build, then crappy for the next 2-3 and finally this current one (build 467 I think) has all the goodies. One caveat that I have found in this newer build is the ability to NOT autoscan when your SD card is remove/put back in. It is on Folders/Library Scanner and untick the Auto-Scan.
Also I highly suggest that if you have Titanium Backup Pro that you use it for two things. First, it is always better to "Freeze" your stock/MIUI music.apk as opposed to just uninstalling them. That way if you ever want to go back you can just "Defrost" it and you are good rather than having to search for the apk and re-push it to /system/app.
Second, as I said before PowerAmp has gone through some growing pains on this 2.0 version. While I do like it very much, I have been on the first build of it while they hammered out the problems on current release, which I am using. You can use TBPro to revert to previous builds as long as you have made backups.
Question
Can you completely remove miui lockscreen and make it always show poweramps lockscreen even if the music isn't playing ? I'm also using the latest poweramp 2.0.4.467
No, but you can use something like Widgetlocker to replace your lockscreen and put it on there.
The only thing i didnt like about poweramp is how it sounds different out-of-the-box than all other music apps ive tried.
what i mean is, whenever ive used playerpro or mixzing or stock, my music all sounds the same (unless i tweak the sound with an equalizer). ive gotten used to the way my music sounds with stock equalizer values because i do the tweaking with my car stereo, not through an app on my phone.
for some reason, poweramp defaults to its own equalizer values. i dont like that. it should use the phones stock equalizer unless otherwise specified imo
if anyone knows how to remedy this, please share.

[Q] Disable lock screen when driving in Android

Is there any easy way to disable having to input my lock screen pattern for when I'm driving?
I use my phone for music but I never have it docked, so I don't want the screen permanently on. It's just dangerous to have to do my pattern unlock whilst I'm driving. I'm using InDrive app to control PowerAmp but I want to be able to go straight to that by just pressing the awake button on my S3.
So is there anything that will easily allow me to disable this but won't stop the screen going off? Ideally a widget I can place on my home screen.

Well.. I never came across a widget or app like that but there is an option in my rom to disable lock screen. I think there will be an option on your device as well. Just turn it on and off whenever you need.

Cheers. If I go through the menu settings then I can disable lockscreen. It's a bit of a pain to do this every time I get in and out of the car though.
I just assumed this would be a common problem for people using their phone to play music in the car. Seems like it might not be!

Well yeah.. But you got few ops. Disable and enable from settings (lockscreen settings on my phone), or you can make a playlist of your music which will save you from touching your device while driving. Or you can copy your music to a usb drive and plug it to your car's audio system.. Or the most complicated but the most useful thing you can do us try making an app or a script will do the job of enabling/disabling the lockscreen everytime you run it. Well.. Thats something for devs and can be really complicated.. But worth trying..
If you're rooted you can install the xposed framework and per app DPI module, then set specific apps to show over the lock screen such as poweramp so its fully use able while the phone is locked

Broken bluetooth controls

So my lockscreen widgets do this thing where if i have the phone's screen off for a bit the lockscreen widgets freak out. this isnt the problem for me, i dont use the widgets, the problem is when this happens sound controls from a remote source (i.e. car, bluetooth headphones etc.) stop responding and i cant play/pause or skip tracks until i unlock the phone open the app thats playing music and turn the screen back off. can anyone help me?
rooted "unlocked" MDK stock odex.
Anyone?

Why not take off the widgets if you don't use them?
If not possible, try this:
1) Download Greenify (free).
2) Add the apps (that go crazy) to Greenify.
3) Test.
Greenify puts apps into a "hibernate" mode that disallow it from running in the background. This is meant to help your phone by saving battery that those apps would use, but I could see it being helpful in your situation as well.

Second Screen Music Player

I noticed this morning that my music player (Google Play music) is not showing up on my second screen when music is playing. It shows up initially for a couple of seconds, but then dissappears... Same whether screen is on or off. I'm on LP, rooted with Xposed running.... Any ideas?
This might be the fact that you don't know how to initialize the player to show up. You have to swipe right on the 2nd screen to get the player to appear. Also, Google Play Music purposely disappears after you swipe to it to prevent draining the battery or for you to accidentally press on it.

Thanks for the reply... however, that is what I am doing (swiping thru the different second screens) and the music player is not there. I've been using it since I got the phone last year... also, before whenever music was playing, the music controls were always one of the second screen displays (screen on or off) I could swipe to... now it pops up for a couple of seconds and then disappears. I'm pretty sure this is not the intended behavior as it would be useless and also is not what it has been doing previously.

If there isn't a section, then you must have accidentally removed Google play music. That app and/or another app is essential to keeping that function working. If you can't find this app that you deleted I recommend running a factory flash wipe.

OK, back in business! Since I only use Google Play Music for playing music, I used Titanium BU to freeze three other Music apps... I unfroze them and poof! the settings menu selection is back!
Thanks!
